Hi folks,
is it possible to install vmware ESX Server (not OSX+Fusion) directly on my Mac Pro? I would like to have a very good hardware-based machine for the datacenter, and virtualize all guests using ESX.
Any advice will be appreciated

Contact VM Fusion for this matter. If there's a compatible server edition (and I think there is) you will not find it here but at their website. For support join their forums (free) and go to the appropriate support forum.

I have been running an old server that was installed as a test system on a DELL workstation - Optiplex GX620 (32 bit).
During the installation I had to confirgure the file: /usr/lib/vmware/installer/Core/TargetFilter.py to change the following line:
"return interface.GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_IDE" to read:
"return interface.GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_ISCSI" this made it worked and I have been using it for 3 years now. However, at this time I was hoping to update it with the latest patches and updates and I cannot figure out if I have ESXi or just ESX, nor what was my last update and what is required next.
I have used this command to get the following output:
# vmware -v
VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 build-207095
... I believe the 3i indicates that I have an ESXi 3.5.0 but is build-207095 the same buid as ESXi 3.5.0 Update 5?
If not, how do I go about updating it? What is the KB # I should download?
I can manage it using vSphere Client 5.5 and I can SSH into it using Putty.
Note: When I run... "# esxupdate --bundle=ESXe350-201302401-I-SG.zip update" from within the folder where its at in the datastore, nothing happens... just a new line is scrolled.

I wanted to tell you that I appreciate the help so far.
Also wanted to point out to you, that the KB indicated above is older than Update 5, which from your instructions is what I have installed. That KB is for U2.
Now, the document definitely has step by step instructions on installing, querying etc. But my problem is ... NOT ALL COMMANDS WORK FOR ME!
This is why I am here because all the instructions I have been reading does not work with my flavor of ESX 3.5.0, 207095... WHY? It has me stumped.
For example, here are some commands the doc asked me to do and they failed: (Note that I had to unzip the folder on my windows box and upload it to /tmp using vSphere Client)

NOTE: All these commands were run sequentially and I just copied and paste it from my SSH Client (PuTTy.exe)

System monitoring plugin for Vmware ESX server..

i have a OEM grid control 10.2.0.5 with management plugin for Vmware ESX server (Management Plug-in: vmware_esx_server, Version 1.1.3.1.0) added.
I later added another server agent for management/monitoring of VMware ESX server.
the agent state is UP and under Monitored targets for the agent I am now trying to add the VMware ESX server
Once on the page, here I enter the details <Hostname / Usrname:Pwd / Protocol:HTTPS / Keystore> and click on Test Connection and recieve a Warning :
Failed to contact the target to be added. Following errors were received while testing the connection to the target. Update the properties accordingly, try Test Connection for testing the properties before saving.

If I go ahead and click OK it adds the Target(Vmware esx server) to the agent and displays message :

THE problem starts here.. the metrics collection doesnt happen for the target and I get Metric collection errors.
I have tried checking in diff versions of management plugins as well as tried adding the target to the Grid control's agent//
Pls help..

Is the location that you specified for the keystore file somewhere that the agent can read from (either a drive local to where the agent is installed or a network drive that the agent has access to)? Is the keystore file one that was generated for that specific ESX Server from its rui.crt file? Each ESX Server has a different rui.crt file that you use to create the keystore file.
You won't be able to collect metrics if the SSL connectivity isn't set up correctly.

SAP ECC6.0 IDES Installation on VMware ESX

SAP Experts...
I am having problem installing SAP ECC6.0 IDES (with oracle) to VMware ESX server due to limitation of vmware create space up to 250GB max. SAP required at least 288GB for database space.
what I want to do is install IDES as local machine with ABAP + Java.
Does anyone have experience with install IDES as local machine on VMware? any clue, solution or sapnote is greatly appreciated.

VMWare ESX can use LUNs up to 2 TB. You could also create two disks and configure a RAID-5 on Windows.
Oracle is not supported under VMWare.

No LMS 4.1 is not supported on ESXi 5.0. LMS 4.1 supports the following Virtualization Systems:

•VMWare ESX Server 4.0.x
•VMWare ESX Server 4.1
•VMWare ESXi Server 4.0
•VMware ESXi Server 4.1
•Hyper V Virtualization (As an installable in Windows 2008)

On a side note, though a OVF/OVA file may be an issue, but you can try to install LMS 4.1 on a virtualized Win/Sol guest OS host, where it should work mostly. But for any issues further, Cisco or TAC may refer to this as an unsupported installation, for any t/s or support.
Else, you may upgrade to LMS 4.2 which is supported on ESXi 5.0.

We are implementing the ACS on a central site (our NOC), so each field engineer will be AAA from diferent sites, same ip networks and diferent places....

Just a quick question - have you looked at superwaba
and wabajump? Superwaba is basically Java for pocket
pc and palm, but wabajump allows you to compile to
palm (not pocket pc). You can also use Eclipse for
development in an applet - much quicker than deploying
to device/virtual device. Small memory footprint as
well.

How to UPDATE ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0, build 207095 using SSH or VSphere CLI remotely!

Over the past few hours I have been posting related questions and I have gotten a little closer to updating my server/host.
I have gone to the ESX Server 3i updates (Embedded and Installer) and I have noticed that the first build for ESX 3i is 207095. Which means that I have not done any updates since the installation. CORRECT!
Now... I have been using "ESX Server 3 Patch Management guide, which instructs us to use esxupdate, but it appears that some of the command in that document is not supported on my host.
This post: vihostupdate35 | VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs ..... Tells me that I will have to use "vihostupdate35" from a remote CLI which I installed but cannot see how to connect to the server as I cannot find any document that shows the syntax etc.
At this point I am confused and frustrated and just need a little more guidance from someone who could point me to a document or copy and past the procedures I need to use to get this update done.
I have downloaded this file to do the UPDATE: "ESXe350-201302401-O-SG.zip" and I have extracted it on the host on a Datastore and copied it to my "/Tmp/ESXi350" folder.
I have also extracted it there as well just in case I need to browse to the extracted folder, and run any command.
Can anyone out there help me with the correct SYNTAX and METHOD to get this update installed?
I can connect with SSH from a windows machine using puTTy.exe as well as I have VSphere CLI installed on another Windows PC and can browse to the "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin" folder to run "vihostupdate35.pl" I can see it in the folder with a "dir" command:

I missed an update and for that reason I have to do a clean install as stated at the link above.
My version cannot do any upgrade or update anymore!

Will Crystal Reports XI run on VMware ESX 3.5 in a virtual machine

I am running VMware ESX 3.5 Update 2 Host with a Windows 2003 R2 Standard on a Virtual Machine. I initially P to V the original server that was running Crystal Reports XI to ESX but it then would not open Crystal Reports, you would click on the excutable and nothing would happen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and nothing changes. I then deployed a new VM from Template and reloaded Crystal Reports and the same thing happens! Does anyone have any ideas?

VMWARE ESX 3.5 and Netware 6.5

I want to Install a Netware 6.5 server in VMWARE ESX 3.5 in a
IBM x3650 with 2 CPU quad core.
But the guest SO wizard don't allow me to install more than
1 CPU.
Why is that?

Generally, Netware doesn't benefit from a second CPU. Of course
there are occasions where adding another CPU improves performance,
but Netware is IO bound, not CPU bound.
Under VMware, Netware will definitely perform better with a single CPU.
Netware does not idle the CPU, so when running under VMware, the
VMware tools idle the first CPU. If there are 2 CPUs, the second CPU
will always run at 100 percent utilization.

VMware ESX Cluster Port Groups not Replicated as Network Sites in SCVMM 2012 Logical Switch

To whom it may concern,
We have added our ESX 4.1 Update 2 Cluster that's being managed by VMware vCenter to SCVMM 2012 because we want to create a private cloud and use the resources of the ESX cluster. SCVMM is replicating all the vSwitch from the ESX cluster as a logical network
but it's not replicating the port groups on the vSwitch as Network Sites associated to the Logical Network.
May you please advise or confirm that this is the normal behaviour of SCVMM? Or is there any way that SCVMM would be able to recognize the port groups associated to the ESX vSwitch and replicate it a a Networks Sites associated to Logical Switches?

I understand that we need to configure the port groups in the vCenter server but SCVMM is only replicating the vSwitch as a Logical Network but not the port groups. It should also replicate the port group as a network site associated to the logical network.
On our VMware environment, we have port groups on different VLANs and being mapped to one physical NIC. When creating a VMware VM in a private cloud with a self-service user role we can't select the option to connect the port group that we've created from
the vCenter server. The only option it gives is the logical network (vSwitch) not the port groups within that logical network (vSwitch). Even if we create network site within the logical network (with assigned VLAN) in SCVMM, it randomly selects the port group
within the VMware vSwitch when we create a VM. We need the users with a self-service role to be able to select the port group from our vSwitch to assign the virtual NIC of the VM to a specific port group. In this way, they don't have to call or email us to
assign the VM to a port group.
I still don't understand why SCVMM does not map the port groups we've created from VMware vCenter server with user that has a self-service role. Is there any other way so that we can map the port group automatically to SCVMM?

How to install prime NCS 1.1 for Vmware ESXİ Hypervisor 5.0

Im trying to install prime NCS 1.1 for Vmware ESXİ Hypervisor 5.0 (that is free copy)
I deployed correctly OVA image which i downloaded cisco.com however power on server and then screen is black and work nothing.
and open console wasnt working.
Physical server installed ESXi is HP Blade server.
I enabled processor virtualization Blade server's BIOS.
NCS 1.1 OVA image is Linux based so i cant install Vmware Tools.during the console wasnt working how i install Vmware Tools and run the server and also NCS 1.1 ??

Once installed and started successfully (e.g. admin has issued "ncs start" from the console and all services are running, can be verified by issuning "ncs status" also from console command line), the NCS server should be listening on port 443 and thus requires you to access it via https.

Has anyone managed to get VMWare ESX SNMP traps recorded into Zen for
Servers 6.5?
I have complied all the MIBs supplied from the ESX Server install
successfully and the alarms now appear in the Alarm Disposition, but I am
still receiving unknown alarms from the ESX server. The OID
is .1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.50.0.201.
According to what the VMWare site says, this refers to a state change to
one of the VM instances on the ESX Server. E.g. A VM instance and changed
from SUSPENDED to ON.
I did manage to download an updated VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB MIB that included
the 201 trap and the associated OBJECT TYPES, but so far it has not
appeared as an alarm in the Alarm disposition.
Is anybody using ZfS to monitor ESX, if so how?
I can email/post the updated VMWARE-TRAPS-MIB if that would be any help.

After further investigation, it seems that this is not ESX alerts, it is
rfom Virtual Centre. I have copied the MIB from the VC box and have
compiled them - initial analysis looks good!

BPC 5.1 on VMware ESX 3.5

I would like to know if the VMware ESX 3.5 version is officially supported to run a BPC 5.1 server (for development/test environment).
I read SAP note 1098847 about virtualization support, but I did not find any specific documentation about this topic.

Hi Dario,
I have successfully installed BPC in a VMware ESXi environment. We actually run BPC on a few VMs without problems. I have written a How-To guide that is on SDN, about some guideline for running BPC under VMware ESX. Most of the information is general ESX stuff, but with the needs of BPC in mind.
One item that you need to pay attention to is the compilation warning. There's sometimes a problem with something in VMware that does not get along with XML 6. I included a link to the Microsoft KB article that fixes it. The symptom, beside the few messages in the event log, was that SQL in general was excruciatingly slow.(to a point where I could not even configure Reporting Services). After implementing the fix, all was well and was actually very fast. So while this is not related to BPC at all (it happenned before i installed BPC), it is something to keep in mind. I believe this happens only on some new installations. In other words, if it does not happen right after installing SQL, then I don't think it will happen later.

Do you know if Sun Cluster installed on top of VMware ESX can be supported by Sun/Oracle?
Do you know what requirements newly installed cluster has to meet in order to satisfy Sun's support contract?

The binaries (executables) in an Oracle home are "linked" (link edited?) to the OS libraries on each server where the software is installed.
Unless the OS is IDENTICAL on each of the IDENTICAL(HW) servers -- that would share the Oracle home--, you could be in trouble.
The only supported configuration (I know of) where the Oracle binaries are shared between servers is 9i RAC. On 10g RAC the binaries are installed on each server.
Other wise I'd say it's NOT recommended, besides you don't save anything (execpt a cooupl of Gigs disk space).

Hello, I read an articule of VMWare that said that VMWare ESX support SAP. But in the other hand I had read some posts that said that it is not recommended to use VMWare with SAP because they(SAP)won't give us support.
Here, we want to use VMWare ESX with SAP Portal Server and SAP MM. But only for Test and Development.
For Producction they'll have their own server.
Does anyone knows if I could implement this.
and If Any of you implement a similar solution?

Normally every customer has acces to it with their S number. If you don't have an S number, this the procedure taken from the help on service.sap.com.
The following data is needed to request a new user ID.

Enter the URL link from the e-mail in your browser's address field and press Return.
The Here is your user ID and password screen appears.
Enter the following data, and make sure that it agrees with the data you entered in Step 1 - Registering with the SAP Service Marketplace:
Customer/partner number or installation number
First name and last name
E-mail address
Enter the required registration password.
When you entries are complete, click Send.
The User data registration was successful screen appears:
You receive your user ID and password.

Step 3 - Log On to the SAP Service Marketplace
Write down your user ID and password.
Hint:
You can change the password in MyProfile as soon as you log on to the SAP Service Marketplace.
To reach the home page of the SAP Service Marketplace, enter the following URL in your browser: http://service.sap.com.
Click Logon to SAP Service Marketplace and enter your user ID and your password.
Click OK.
You are now logged on to the SAP Service Marketplace.
