Voice clients per AP

Hi Experts,
I would like to know how many voice clients can be supported in a Cisco 3700 AP?  I have seen a document (Document ID:8103);
Q. How many wireless IP telephony handsets are recommended per AP?
A. IP telephony network sizing is essential to ensure that adequate bandwidth and resources are available to carry mission-critical voice traffic. In addition to the usual IP telephony design guidelines for sizing components, such as PSTN gateway ports, transcoders, WAN bandwidth, and so forth, also consider these 802.11b issues when sizing your wireless IP telephony network:
Number of 802.11b devices per AP: Cisco recommends that you have no more than 15 to 25
The number of 802.11b phones you can deploy per Layer-2 subnet or VLAN depends on these factors:
Use no more than seven G.711 or eight G.729 active calls per AP.
On 7925G IP phones, I have read in an article not to use WPA2/PSK encryption.  Is this still true?

No, it is not true.
I think this is the document you referring where Cisco recoomends WPA2/802.1X over PSK, but still you can use WPA2/PSK with 7925G

    I was able to find the following transition guide for Xserve that provides some workload guidance to determine performance when planning a server deployment.

    On page 9, Performance there is a chart that provides maximum numbers of connected users for various activities such as file sharing, mail, web, calendar, directory services and Time Machine and the CPU used as a server (Xserve, Mac Pro, Mac Mini). This information is a bit dated as the referenced software is Snow Leopard Server (OS X 10.6), and the hardware is older also, but it should give you a general idea of what you might need to look for.

    I'm have WCS, 2 - WLC4404, 1 - WLC4402 and 1 WISM (6509). All running 7.X OS.
    Here is my problem I have 4 3502 AP,s in the hall, but the laptops all connect to one AP. 2 Clients on A and 26 Clients on G.
    How do I control this?

    If you want to limit the number of clients PER AP then this is a feature that has been identified and will be available in the next few version.
    You can, however, limit the number of clients and default is set to 12.

  • Cisco 1230 max clients per AP & solutions?

    Hi all
    We have approx 15 APs located around site. We have introduced 40+ notebooks recently and noticed slow access with our wireless network.
    I understand the recommend amount is roughly 10-20 clients per access point. The less clients connected the better performance per user.
    My question is can I change the max associations for each AP to 10 or 20, introduce a few more new AP's and would this mean the client notebook would keep trying until it reaches an AP that will accept associations ? Is this the recommended solution ?

    what type ur application ur using in you clients(Laptops).my experiance i am using 25 Laptops per AP .ITS working fine for internet browing.but it doesn'tsupport for Applications like Browser based.i suggest you to put a WLAN Controller and automatic load balancing .it wil solve your problem

  • WAP321 active clients per cluster

    Dear Support,
    Please give me deatiled information about the "active clients per cluster" parameter of a WAP321 AP.
    Datasheet says  active clients per cluster = 80, but i find a presentation where this number is 160 (attached). ???
    Another question is, What if i have only 5 WAP321 (not the maximum 8pcs) in my cluster?
    How much clients can connect to the cluster at the same time? (20 pcs/AP and 50/cluster or 20 pcs/AP and 80/cluster?)
    Other qestion: The information exchange between APs  on the same cluster happens wired or wirelessly?
    (for examlpe automatic channel selection, or when i config a parameter one of the AP, then this is updated on all the other APs)

    Hello Sir, Thank you for commenting back. If you would look at the Datasheet again it does confirm what I mentioned here. There are two section: performance mainly deals with the Access Point by itself, Up to 32 connective and 20 recommended. The 80 that you refer to is from the Multi-Access point section from when you have this access point set in a cluster.

  • CCKM vs Mobility Groups - Roaming for Voice Clients

    Hi there,
    I am looking at deploying wireless at our site for voice, I have a couple of questions regarding Roaming between APs and best way to acheive fast roaming for latency senstive voice and other applications.
    According to Cisco SRND for Voice over Wireless (
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Mobility/vowlan/41dg/vowlan_ch5.html), it is recommended:
    "Fast roaming algorithms include Cisco Centralized Key Management (CCKM)  and Proactive Key Caching (PKC). CCKM and PKC allow a WLAN client to  roam to a new AP and re-establish a new session key—known as the  Pairwise Transient Key (PTK)—between the client and AP without requiring  a full IEEE 802.1X/EAP reauthentication to a AAA/RADIUS server."
    But let's say I used WPA/PSK for my WLAN and just rely on mobility information in the controller to perform the handover, would this still be best practice.
    I have actually tested both and they work quite well, neither drops a call or experiences any degragation in voice quality. I suppose I am asking for a real world perspective and if I should adhere to the SRND on this one?

    Great question BTW.
    CCKM/OKC/PKC only comes into play when EAP is used. During the EAP process the PMK is seeded from the MSK. From the PMK, it is seeding the PTK. With no advance romaing in use as a client roams from AP to AP you would have to redo that process all over.
    When you use PSK.. Your MSK is your PMK and there is no need to go back to the radius server for a new PMK. So your client and ap exchange this info.. no need for a radius server ..
    Does this make sense?

  • APs reboot due to high number of clients per radio

    Has anyone problems with accesspoints reboots at high client count (50+ associations per radio)
    We have a 5508 WLC with 7.3 Code and 3600 AP´s.
    Our problem is that sometimes accesspoints reboots. And this only if a lot of clients are connected.

    I don´t know the reason why the ap reboot. This is the problem. We monitor the Ap with nagios and we see that the ap is offine for a few minutes. So I believe the ap reboot.
    We found no logs on the wlc for the reason.
    The problem area is a congress center a so sometimes we have really a lot of users. (like a Cisco Networkers)
    We have all the typical problems at high density WLAN. (a lot of Rouge Ap´s, high channel  utilization, interference …)
    But could that the reason why a accesspoint reboot?

  • Getting started, clients per AP & scaling questions

    This is my first time into the wireless side. I need to scale a solution for a large campus. I have an idea of the number of APs required to cover the area, but I don't know how many end users can connect to a given AP, and presume there is some limit? I'm particularly interested in how to do this in auditoriums where it is a large open space, but with many delegates. So is there a general rule of thumb on "not more than x users per AP"? The plan is to have all APs linked together using a WLAN controller.
    Other question: is there any functional difference between having dedicated 4402 / 4404 WLAN controllers and using a WISM service module in a Catalyst 6500 series switch?

    The number of APs is/was an (un)educated guess. Having looked at the architectural drawings, I have an idea, but as I'm still in the process of discussing this with the customer, I have put a disclaimer in the number quoted, stating that the number may change and will be confirmed following a wireless site survey. But this is new territory for me, and I'm not too sure how best to do a site survey. Would this be something that I could do, with the correct equipment? Or is it best left contracted to some specialised wireless expert?

    Thanks. Scaling and solution architecting is part of my job description and I thought there must be a limit. But appreciate that there's also a limit to the number of APs you can have in the same vicinity as they can interfere with each other.
    Regarding your comment on WLC and WCS, am I right in believing there IS a licensing cost for WCS? Also, am I right in believing that you don't need WCS to set up a WLC, but it makes it a bit easier (like a nice web GUI instead of command lines on the WLC units)?
    Also, if I were to have two WISM modules, one per Catalyst 6500 switch (in non VSS mode), I suppose they work as a main / backup ? In which case, how can they be synchronised? Is this a particular case where WCS helps as it oversees both units simultaneously?

  • Maximum number of clients per Extreme?

    Forgetting about bandwidth usage, what is the maximum number of clients (Macbook, iPad/iPhone,) that connect to an AirPort Extreme at the same time?

    I think you may be asking about WDS, which would kill the performance of the network.
    If you need to connect 120 wireless devices (you don't tell us if computers will connect using wireless or ethernet), the only practical setup would be to connect each of the 3 AirPort Extremes together using ethernet cabling.
    I would urge you to work with an IT professional to make sure that the system will do what you want. The AirPort Extreme is designed for home use. It can work in a situation such as yours, but your IT pro will have other suggestions. You would do well to listen to him.

  • Netbooting - how many clients per server?

    Hello,
    I am looking in to having mac mini server (current version/dec 2012) to host about 60 clients, majority as netbooters, also maybe with a couple of extra remote VPN clients.
    However besides gigabit ethernet connection defined here as the requirement, there is no note of how many servers would I need for netbooting the clients?
    Does anyone have experience with this kind of setup? (similar to a kiosk environment)

    I would be concerned if more than 20 clients were trying to netboot at the same time.  Theoretically, you'd be okay with perhaps 200 clients as long as you could be sure that wasn't going to happen.
    Under normal conditions, ignoring maintenance and other unusual occasions ... are these clients booting
    once a day every morning, roughly at the same time as each other
    twice a day, but a random unsynchronised times, no more than 5 at a time
    only when power has been disconnected (rare)
    I gave three examples, but if you want to describe your situation more closely that may prompt someone familiar with that kind of setup.

  • Mail client per Computer

    Got an unusual one that I hope people can help me with.
    I manage the IT at a small school with 10 computers in an ICT classroom.
    All PCs run 7 pro 64bit logging into a domain controlled by Server Standard FE running Exchange 2007.
    There are 6 yeargroups that use the computers and they log in per year, i.e: year1, year2 etc.
    There are also 10 user mailboxes on the server called student1, student2, etc.
    What I would like to do is tie each one of the mailboxes to a separate PC, irrespective of what year has logged in to the PC.
    So, PC1 runs mailbox Student1, no matter who logs in to it.
    PC2 runs mailbox Student2 etc...
    Is this possible?

    According to your description, my understanding as below:
    PC1 - User1 - Mailbox1
    PC2 - User2 - Mailbox2
    PC3 - User3 - Mailbox3
    User2 or User3 or others can logon PC1 with their own account, however they can only access Mailbox1. 
    If it the case, based on my knowledge, it seems impossible.
    We can grant delegation permission to others to access our mailbox, some like:
    User1 grant User2 full access permission, then User2 can access User1's mailbox.
    However I don't know how to tie mailbox to a specific PC.

  • Airport Utility Timed Access Control does not allow/restrict access to wireless clients per the time set.

    I have been trying to setup Timed Access Control in Airport Utility and it does not seem to be working correctly. 
    In Airport Utility from Edit Timed Access Control I Enter a name for my device (iPad/iPhone any device), enter my mac address, set time for Everyday and use default Between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, save and then update. When I go to my device iPad iPhone etc. I still have access even when it is after the time set, 5:00PM.  If I set no access it will restrict access also I set a time between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM and access was restricted.  It doesnt seem to matter what the device is.  I know that the MAC Adress is set correctly.  It seems like an issue with the Utility, possibly time miss match or something.  Not sure if I am missing something or if this Utility just has flaws. Please Help.

    I changed the default to (no access) and set an entry for my test device (an iPad) to "Everyday Between 9am to 5pm.  The iPad was still able to gain access to the network. 
    Something else to note, if I try to edit the time of an entry it gives me an error on my MBP "Invalid value", "The value for “Timed Access Control” is invalid."  This happens even if I delete a digit (number or letter in the time field) and replace with the exact same. Not sure if the two are related. I have tried to edit access from my iPad.  I don't get any errors but I still don't get the expected results.  I called Apple to try and get Tech support but they were not much help. Thanks again.

    The general rule of thumb is 7-8 voice client per AP and 15 to 25 data clients.
    Has anyone seen any documentation that explains this more fully
    I have seen figures higher than this for pure 802.11g environments but cant recall where and does this still hold true for 802.11n.

    Well, as you said, this is just a 'rule of thumb'. There are no hard-and-fast answers concerning client density on AP's.
    The truth is, an AP is much like a hub. It's a shared space.
    The CSMA/CA algorithm used for collision avoidance limits effective throughput quite a bit when several clients are associated to a single AP. That, coupled with the fact that voice traffic is sensitive to changes in speed over time (jitter) as well as low bandwidth, limits the number of voice clients that can be associated to a given AP.
    The rule of 7-8 voice clients is probably a good starting point. That should be appropriate for planning and budgeting purposes. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure whether it will give you the quality and connectivity you require is by having a site survey done, including tests specifically for VoIP over WiFi.

  • Setting the Client Count per WLAN and per AP radio

    We use WLC 5508 with 7.4. We tried to set max allowed clients per AP radio to 30 through GUI. We have APs with 80 clients associeted though.
    Has anyone else tried this feature?
    When entering config wlan max-associated-clients max-clients wlan-id we got 
    "WLAN/Guest-Lan/remote-lan is enabled.Please disable to configure max associated clients."
    GUI doesn't show that message, should it?  In GUI, Is it necesary to disable WLAN before too?

    No, the GUI does some stuff automatically, like disablen/enabling the WLAN when you make the change.
    From teh CLI *you* have to do them.

  • No of client supported per radio on Cisco Access Points?

    Hi Experts, 
    Is their any documentation that lists out the number of clients that can be handled efficiently per radio against a particular model of access points?
    The question might appear quite ambiguos considering the fact that the wireless communication works on the principal of air time and shared medium. However still curious to know if latest model of access points make the enhancement any better.
    Learnt quite some time back that 1262 WAP supports 15 clients per radio while 3700 would easily do with over 128 client per radio. Not sure on what basis we distinguish this?
    Appreciate if someone could share their knowledge on same. Would be grateful if we a pointer to any doc is shown as well giving the comparision.

    Does this rule of thumb(of 25 APs per radio) applies to all the access points models?
    Little confused from document( http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/wireless/buyers-guide.html#~indoor ) which lists different client count values against different models. Suppose we are having 600 series of WAP, the doc says it has client count value of 15. So I made my own conclusion that only 15 clients active association is possible at any given instant in time and if the 16th client tries association, it will fail and would be able to succeed only when the already associated client count goes a little under 15. 
    Can you please throw some light on the document claims?
