Volume bit trouble, no startup

My 1 year old 15" PowerBook with Tiger will sit at the gray Apple screen and load for a long period of time, with no progress. It has recently had problems such as slowing down, locking me out of my account, etc. I tried rebooting using my install CD and running Disk Utility. It mentions that my volume bit count does not match the specified number, and informs me that it cannot fix the problem.
I tried reinstalling Tiger, but it mentions a bad disk and cancels the install. At first, I thought it was the CD, but I'm starting to think the hard drive failed. Can this be possible?

I'd suggest running Apple Harware Test. Boot your machine with your software disc in the machine and hold down the option button immediately after hearing the startup chime.
The machine will select all the available bootable volumes it can find. This will take a couple minutes of more. You should see the Apple Hardware Test come up as an option. Select that. Then I'd recommend running the extended test for thorough results. See what it says about your hard drive.
If it doesn't find anything wrong, you may want to pick up a copy of a third-party utility like Diskwarrior. That's what I use and have found it able to fix things that Disc Utility cannot. A lot of people also like Tech Tool Pro.

  • How can I reformat my hard drive if erase and partition don't work in disk utility and I get an error when I try to erase and install from the Leopard install disk?  I have had several kernel panics, but the volume shows up in startup disk.

I have had several kernel panics on my iBook G4; the panic message shows up just after the desktop appears. Although the startup volume shows up in Startup Disk, the installation disk reports an error when I attempt an erase and install. Disk utility is unable either to erase or partition the hard drive. The hard drive shows up in disk utility, but the startup volume doesn’t  HELP!!!

Do you have the original system discs that came with the iBook when it was new?
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
Erasing the disc and installing Mac OS X 10.5 will result in loss of the other applications (such as the iLife applications) which came pre-installed on the iBook.

  • Possible to keep a volume from mounting at startup?

I am fixing my Aunt's MacMini with 10.4. I have another volume on the disk where I have a second installation of 10.4 with utilities. I'd like to keep this volume unmounted if possible.

  • External hard drive volumes not recognized as startup disks

Using "option" at startup only yields Mac HD not external drive volumes.

By your description, it doesn't look like the OS's installed on the partitions are capable of booting your machine. If they don't qualify for your machine, they will not show up in a list you can choose from.
Your machine has a minimum OS that it will support, as of the day it was made. I assume that since you are posting in a Snow Leopard forum that your machine has an intel processor. The iBook G4 does not, and the Mac mini OS may be too old of a version of OS X to run on your machine.

  • Imac having trouble with startup

My iMac is currently having issues starting up.  When I press the power button it will boot up and take me to a gray screen. Once it's at the gray screen a loading bar appears. At that time, the computer shuts back down.  I've been able to startup and go to disk utility but that has been no help.  When verifying the disk, the messages "invalid key length" and "the volume macintosh HD could not be verified completely" appear.  Any ideas?

    Hi nickrsnider,
I understand that you may be seeing a gray screen while attempting to boot OS X. Take a look at this link, which describes your issue and may be able to help you troubleshoot this issue further:

  • Volumes/ folder trouble in iTunes

I'm in the process of setting up my new Mac and having trouble with iTunes.  I keep my music on my external hard drive, which I've named KLB_Ext.  After selecting the right iTunes library, I found that I can't actually play any of the songs, because each one requires locating.  Even though I've gone in through Preferences/Advanced and pointed to the proper folder on my external hard drive, "Volumes/" keeps ending up in front of the path to the songs.
I don't know if I'm explaining this properly or not.  Basically, instead of just "KLB_Ext/Music/..." I've got  "Volumes/KLB_Ext/Music/...."
    How to I fix this?

I would delete the titles/files you have on iTunes (disconnect your external to be on the safe side).  Once you do that, connect your external and set your music folder via preferences.  Drag and drop your mp3's to your iTunes.  You should be good to go.
    Good luck!

  • Volume, bit depth, and quality - for the boffins

    hi y'all
my understanding is that with digital sound that if levesl are too low you lose quality as the signal is not carried using all of the bits.
THis is explained clearly in the book 'mxing with your mind' by michael paul stavrou using a 'photo of a skyscraper' analogy to represent audio clarity (focus) changing with volume (height of skyscraper)
With digital the highest part of the skyscraper is most in focus , whereas in analogue the middle part of the skyscraper is most in focus
    3 questions:
    1) Is this understanding correct?
    2) If you have recorded levels that are low does adding gain or normalizing the files make any difference to the sound quality? - surely detail can't be added
    3) When you add gain to a quiet mix is there a difference in the quality of the outcome between the following approaches.
    1) normalizing the audio files for each track
    2) adding gain to each track in the mixer either by adjusting faders or adding a insert that increases gain
    3) adding gain at the mix output bus or master output fader?
Would value anyone's views on this.

my understanding is that with digital sound that if levesl are too low you lose quality as the signal is not carried using all of the bits.
    Not really.
THis is explained clearly in the book 'mxing with your mind' by michael paul stavrou using a 'photo of a skyscraper' analogy to represent audio clarity (focus) changing with volume (height of skyscraper)\
Unfortunately, this kind of analogy has misrepresented digital audio for a long time, and has caused all kinds of myths, like "digital audio is steppy or discontinuous" and "a higher sample rate gives you more resolution because the steps are smaller" etc etc.
If you have recorded levels that are low does adding gain or normalizing the files make any difference to the sound quality?
Yes, it makes it very very slightly worse.
    3) When you add gain to a quiet mix is there a difference in the quality of the outcome
    between the following approaches.
    1) normalizing the audio files for each track
    2) adding gain to each track in the mixer either by adjusting faders or adding a
    insert that increases gain
    3) adding gain at the mix output bus or master output fader?
Normalising should really never be used. If all these processes are implemented correctly, there should be no practical difference between adding gain to all individual tracks, versus adding gain at the master fader.
This wasn't the case some years ago with poorly implemented digital mixers, but in this day and age, pretty much everyone does it right.
Bottom line, if you really want to understand this stuff it can be useful, but really, improving your song writing will have a much better positive effect on your music than worrying about which dither curve works the best and whether adding +1dB of gain is going to destroy your audio.

  • Same volume name twice in Startup Manager

I have several (bootable) volumes on my LaCie External Firewire drive. One volume (my primary startup volume) is OS 10.3.9. Another volume is an older installation of OS 10.2.8 that I just can't seem to part with. When I use the Startup Manager (pressing Option as the machine starts), I get two volumes labeled "LaCie 10.3" (my primary startup volume name). If I click the LaCie 10.2 volume to start with, I get the gray screen with the Apple logo, and the nothing...no spinning sprocket, no progress, no crash. TechTool Pro tells me that the "StartupFile" on that volume is "Not Present".
How can I permanently rename the OS 10.2 volume so that it shows up in the Startup Manager as LaCie 10.2 (or anything else, for that matter? Or should I just let go of the past and delete the System folder on that volume, sinc I never use OS 10.2 anymore?

  • HT1198 How can I get a volume to mount on startup?

mcp 10.8.2 (june 2012), latest iPhoto
I followed article, created volume, will not automount, must go to disk utility to 'attach', then open iPhoto
For other users it does not even show up on disk utility....library will not open

Are you trying to import an iPhoto library in the disk image into another library?  That's what the screenshot seems to imply.  You're in an import window.
Or do you want to have the other account open the library that's in the disk image?
Can the other accounts open the disk image directly by going to the Shared folder and double clicking on it?  If so the image will appear on the desktop:
Then launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and you should see it in the window:
Or you can choose the Other Library button and go to the disk image in the Open window:
But the key is to open the disk image in the other account.  This is what it looks llke from Disk Utility:
    Hope this helps.

  • B&W G3 having trouble finding startup disk

Hi. Ever since the DVD drive of my B&W G3 died, it's taken an extra minute to find the startup disk. I get the blinking Mac folder plus the question mark that we all know and, well, don't love.
I've replaced the DVD drive, and currently there is no operating system on the computer. However, I had this problem even with OS 9 installed. I also get the blinking icon when starting up from a CD.
Does anybody know how I can remedy this problem, so the computer can find the operating system right away? I have two IDE (or ATA, whatever) internal drives. I think the master/slave configuration is correct.
    Any ideas?

If the system eventually finds the startup disk and boots from it, the problem can be solved by setting a Startup disk.
If not, the parameters (which hold some essential values that make starting up your Mac simple and painless) have been corrupted. This can be caused by "just because", but it is more often caused by interruption of the main power when the backup battery is in a very weak state.
The first level of fix on a Blue & White G3 is to open the side door and press and hold the CUDA Reset button (nearest the 1/2 AA-size battery) for a quarter minute. Avoid momentary presses which can be damaging to battery health.
The second level of fix is to replace the battery and repeat the reset procedure.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit troubles

So ive been having troubles lately with my HPE-180a graphics card (nvidia gt230) and decided to replace it with a nvidia gt630. I uninstalled the previous drivers for the card, shut down the computer, then replaced with the new card. Everything went smoothly
and windows 7 booted in low resolution with a little driver update notification in the bottom corner. Once all the drivers were installed for the new card window's said it needed to reboot so I did. After rebooting Windows took 20 minutes to load up and the
    following things were displayed:
'Failed to connect to a windows service' notification
Unable to use keyboard and mouse. Both connected by usb and can be detected in the BIOS settings. Mouse has power as the red light is on underneath.
    No internet connection (ethernet).
At this point I decided to restore default setting in the BIOS. Still no difference.
So I boot up the computer again in safe mode, the mouse and keyboard still don't work.
I boot up again, press F8 and selected repair your computer. After selecting it I get the boot manager screen with error code 0xc00000f. I don't have the installation discs as I had a partition on my hard disk for windows recovery. (Ive used it once before)
I have linuxmint 15 installed aswell on the computer on the same hard disk and it works perfectly.
What can I do to fix this problem?

    Hi,
Since this issue happens after you changed the graphic card but issue persists even you plugged in your old graphic card, so please make sure that all hardware components\ wires are fixed solid.
You can also try last known good configuration and see if it can helps

  • Mac Pro (Early 2008) freezes, reboots to recovery system, trouble locating startup disk

I have two issues which may or may not be related with my Mac Pro.  First, off and on for several months is has been frozen when waking from sleep.  I can hit a key and see my desktop with the windows I left open, but I get the spinning beach ball and the time is typically several hours behind.  The only way I can get it to start is to restart from the power button.  This typically happens overnight when my computer has been asleep for a long time.  Sometimes I hear the fan run while the computer is asleep and I don't know if that is related. I've tried switching from Firefox to Chrome to see if that was the problem since I typically have a few tabs open on Firefox when it freezes, but that does not solve the problem.  The next step I plan to try is to get a can of compressed air and clean the fan and check if the video card air intake might be clogged, based on information I have read in various forums.  Does anyone have other suggestions for things to try to eliminate the freezing?  Another suggestion I read was to get a new logic board battery installed but I hate to lug this thing into an Apple store unless I really have to.  Most of the time I'm comfortable fixing things on my own.
The second issue is that when I reboot after shutting down the computer with the power button, it does not always load the startup disk.  Sometimes I get the recovery system instead, and if I try disk repair, restore from backup, or the startup disk option from the apple menu, it cannot locate the startup disk.  Usually after a few tries, I can restart it and get my desktop, but I'm not sure how long that will work.  I hoped that resetting the NVRAM would take care of this but it has not fixed the issue.  When I do disk repair, it says the drive is fine.  I've also used idefrag to clean up the drive.  I'm thinking my hard drive might be about to die and I should just get a new one, but I don't want to spend the money if that is not the issue.  I have 83 GB free on the drive so space should not be an issue.
Any suggestions on fixing either or both of these issue would be very much welcome!  I need to make this computer last at least a couple more years.

    Mac Pro early 2008

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • CS4 32-bit fails to startup (64-bit fine)

Using Vista 64-bit, installed PS CS4 the other day. I have been using the 64 bit version fine with no problems. However, I downloaded a plugin that only works in the 32-bit version, so I tried to launch the 32-bit version from the start menu, and the splash screen comes up for a few seconds, then an error message saying "Adobe Photoshop CS4 has stopped working". The splash screen is stuck on "Building TWAIN menu items..." This also happens when I try to start the program from the photoshop.exe in Program Files (x86) folder. Any ideas? Thanks!

Any TWAIN hardware on your system? Scanners? Special camera drivers? Memory card slots or PictBridge via a printer? Sounds like a specific component is only rooted with 64bit drivers and thus the 32bit version cannot handle it...
