VPN on Snow Leopard (Desktop)

I am using iVPN to setup a VPN server on my desktop computer running OS X Snow Leopard. It's setup to use the L2TP, IP Address range 10.0.1.220 to 10.0.1.230 (my home network is 10.0.1.x. DNS is the standard open DNS servers which should be ok.
Everything seems to be setup correctly and I can start the server just fine.
Dialing in is also cool - I setup my mac VPN connection from work to dial in and "Send all traffic over VPN connection" and this seem to be causing issues. I am no longer able to use my client computer to surf the web.
Any suggestions?

I fixed it but no idea how!

  • Custom icon for Boot Camp partition on Snow Leopard desktop?

I have a Boot Camp partition (NTFS) with Windows XP. In Snow Leopard, the partition shows on the desktop with a generic hard drive icon. I'd like to change this to a custom icon, but when trying to paste over the generic icon in the Get Info window, Edit->Paste is grayed out.
In Leopard, it was possible to have a custom icon for a Boot Camp partition by formatting a thumb drive as FAT32, pasting the custom icon onto it in the Get Info window, booting into Windows XP, and copying two invisible icon files from the thumb drive to the NTFS drive. This would display the custom icon for the Boot Camp partition icon on the Leopard desktop. This doesn't work in Snow Leopard.
Is it possible to use a custom icon for a Boot Camp partition on the Snow Leopard desktop?

I don't see this option in Properties for the Boot Camp volume. In any case, I believe the custom icon is set correctly for the C: drive in Windows. I followed he procedure in the second paragraph of my initial post, which I learned from a post over a year ago. I copied the two hidden files .VolumeIcons.icns and ._ File _ to the C: drive. When I boot into Leopard, the correct custom icon for the Boot Camp partition appears on the Leopard desktop. But when I boot into Snow Leopard, only a generic hard drive icon appears on the desktop for that partition.

  • Best way to VPN in Snow Leopard?

I had a panic yesterday that I believe may have been caused by my Cisco VPN. I am using version 4.9.01 (0100). I realize version 180 is available, but I believe I found this versions worked better when Snow Leopard first came out. I believe I connect over UDP so that the Apple VPN does not work for me. I read some people's suggestions to try the Cisco AnyConnect beta but it does not seem to connect with my system either. Any thoughts? For now I will continue with the Cisco VPN and risk more panics, but there must be a better way. Cisco themselves say their VPN software is incompatible with 10.6.X.

  • Upgrade From Snow Leopard Desktop to Snow Leopard Server

I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro and it's running great! I upgraded it from 10.5 and it worked just fine for me. I was looking at the Snow Leopard Server and all the features it offers for the other Macs on my home network. My question is this: Can I install Snow Leopard Server on my Mac Pro without having to do a clean install? I have everything set up perfectly and I really don't want to have to reconfigure everything.
My other question is, besides the server software, is there any difference between the server and desktop versions? More specifically, am I still going to be able to use my audio creation/editing software and play the few games I have? Does the server strip out any functionality or is it exactly the same thing as the desktop version, but with added server tools?
Thanks in advance for your input!

    1. No, you cannot upgrade from Client to Server. You will need to erase and install.
    2. Generally, you can do the same things. It isn't exactly the same, even ignoring the server tools. Are there some things that won't work? Maybe. Namely because developers don't typically code with MOSXS in mind.
My question to you is this: What do you want from MOSXS that you cannot do with the Mac OS Client? And are you set on using it on your Mac Pro?
    I ask because:
    1. Client does most of the thing people want to do that are "server" like.
    2. It isn't a good idea to mix server and production environments. OS X Server is typically easy to setup for basic operation, however, there will be issues and you will have to dig a little to get things working. Which means you will stopping and starting services, issuing terminal commands, modifying plists and .confs and rebooting. Sometimes it goes so wrong that you have to reinstall.
This is why if you are serious about a server, you should really consider a separate machine. The Mac Mini is a great option for a light duty server.
Also, carefully consider your needs. Can the things you want to do be accomplished with OS X Client and maybe a few web services. Not trying to sway you either way, but it isn't always as simple as "Click the Start button and the service is working."

  • Snow Leopard Desktop Background Images

Ok I don't know how but I deleted the Macintosh HD/Library/Desktop images folder and now am missing the Apple images therein. How can I reinstall those images/backgrounds without doing a total reinstall of OS X?

The Music was still in the folder but the Icon under PLACES in Finder was deleted. I went into the Library folder and copied the Music folder icon and pasted back under PLACES. It changed to the original "music note" icon and everything is fine.
I have been backing up my Mac HD but even under Time Machine previous backup screens no longer showed the "music note" icon. Very odd.
I did download Pacifist but I would have to know exactly where the "music note" setup package was located in order to open it. It does look like a good utility to have. Thanks for the recommendation.

How can I restore the Search Preferences on my iMac OSX 10.6.8?  It has disappeared.

Click on the magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of the display, in the menu bar, and an entry field should appear.  Type in "System Preferences' and a list should be generated with the System Preferences folder among them.  Click on it and it should appear.  If not, then the reinstall will be required.

  • Snow Leopard Cisco VPN timeout

I am using the built-in Cisco IPSec VPN in Snow Leopard to connect to my company's server. My VPN connection times out after 1 hour regardless whether I am actively using (sending/retrieving information through the VPN).
Any help as to where I can change a setting to keep the connection alive longer or until I disconnect?

I don't think it is a timeout. The console shows the following sequence when a disconnection occurs.
IKE Packet: transmit success. (Information message).

  • Lion Server not handing out DHCP addresses to Snow Leopard client

I have been pulling my hair out over this.
    Here is the layout
Lion Server running on the newest Mac Mini and doing mail, DNS, DHCP, Software update and has a valid, not self assigned, certificate
3 clients running Lion Desktop (2 iMACs and a MBP pro (all no more that a year old and all woth the current updates)
1 client running Snow Leopard Desktop (last years 13 inch MBA)
The 3 Lion clients can get dhcp fro mthe Lion server without any issue
The SL client cannot get a DHCP address from the Lion server
A tcpdump shows the DHCP request coming from the MAC address of the SL client but no response from the Lion Server and nothing showing a deny in the logs for the DHCP server or any other system/kernel logs. The Lion clients all show the request and reply for them. All 4 clients currently have a static assignment in DHCP but even if I remove them all and do auto-assign for everything or even each one individually, the SL client will not get an address both on the Wifi and Ethernet (I have the USB ethernet adapter).
I also have an Aiport Extreme and if I use that for the DHCP server then all clients get the addresses. I know the DHCP server in the extreme cannot be shut down but if you give the extreme a static address then assign dhcp on the extreme to only give out one address and that is the same one that is statically assigned then it "thinks" it is out of addresses and no longer tries to assign addresses
At first I thought there was a conflict between the extreme and the Lion server but as I mentioned above, tcpdump clearly shows the requests going right to the Lion server
I'm usually pretty good at this kind of thing but this one has me stumped. I'm thinking bug, anyone else run into this yet?

  • Snow Leopard Finder's Get Info fails to show Owner and Group for some files or folders which reside on a Shared Volume, hosted by G5 Server w/ OS 10.4 - why?

Frustrations with file permissions abound, as certain co workers are unable to manually determine their level of permission or who to ask to make changes to files and folders belonging to others. Users of Snow Leopard desktop OS get unhelpful feedback via Finder's Get Info, seeing only the permissions listed for "Everyone" and a statement that "You have custom access".  The custom message exists, presumably, because ACL's are employed on the shared volume in an attempt to give managerial control over these volumes to specific users, even if all users can create files and folders on those volumes.
Shared volumes are partitions of an external RAID which are set up as sharepoints on a G5 tower running Server 10.4.  Other persons in the office, using machines that are running desktop OS 10.5, can correctly see the assigned Owner and Group permissions (although the "custom access" still shows).  This at least lets the 10.5 user know who created a given file or folder, so that they can resolve permissions-restricted issues if they come up (i.e. User A wants to delete file X, but as it was created by User B, A must contact B and have them delete it.  In 10.6 it appears that A cannot determine who B is).
I know that ACL's are functioning (enabled on the drive) since we have been making use of ACL-granted write privileges for quite a while (and the custom access seems to be evidence too).
An error I encountered, pertaining to this, is that I used a 10.6 machine to create a working folder, then generated and saved several files in this location.  Expected permissions thus would be Owner = me (i.e. the user I was logged in as), R/W, Group = staff, R only, Everyone = R only.  However, immediately the permissions shown in Finder / Get Info consisted only of Everyone = R only, with no entry for Owner or Group.  Moreover, clicking + to add either an Owner or a Group resulted in error message that I had entered an invalid user or group, even though I typed in correct info (such as trying to add "staff" as a group).

  • Cannot boot Snow Leopard from external FireWire drive

I use a Western Digital My Passport Studio 500 GB external drive to back up my MacBook Pro with Time Machine. I had created a 30 GB Leopard boot partition with various utilities and tools; since the small drive goes wherever the laptop goes, I figured it might come in handy to be able to boot the computer in the event something went wrong with its internal 250 GB drive.
Over the weekend, I upgraded the external drive to Snow Leopard, and now it can no longer be used to boot the laptop. The symptoms are truly weird. Holding down the Option key while rebooting does not show the external drive unless I disconnect and reconnect the FireWire cable. The drive then shows up. I select it, and it appears to begin to boot, then it just sits on the gray screen with the little round thingie turning for a long time (five to ten minutes). Eventually, the system boots from its internal drive. This happens regardless of whether I'm connected by means of FireWire 400 or 800.
After spending a lot of time looking at the usual suspects (cables, permissions, PRAM, etc.) I reinstalled Sand Leopard (OK, 10.5) and lo and behold, the drive boots again (though for some reason I still have to go through the disconnect/reconnect routine). Clearly, something in the OS has changed with respect to the way booting from external drives is handled.
On the positive side, I have none of the symptoms described in other threads: Time Machine works flawlessly, and both the boot partition and the Time Machine partition appear on the Snow Leopard desktop every time I connect the drive.
Does anyone have the same issues? Does anyone know of a workaround?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

    Hi,
Working from a MacBook Pro 2.4 (Santa Rosa) with 4gb ram, running OS 10.5.7-
(All external HDs are 7200 rpm)
Shortly after our fresh install of Snow Leopard onto a new but already tested External 1.5 Seagate Barracuda (with the most current firmware), in an OWC Mercury Elite enclosure-
We installed Snow Leopard smoothly to that external HD without any issues, and it booted up from that 1.5T external HD, and worked fine.
Then, still working from the MacBook Pro, I turned on and booted another external HD (a Newertech Guardian Maximus RAID running 10.4.11 via FW800, daisy chained to the 1.5T External with Snow Leopard newly installed.
Again that's MacBook Pro <FW800> Snowy external HD <FW800> 10.4.11 RAID (booted & working from the RAID).
But when I tried to bootup up Snow Leopard, after doing the work on the 10.4.11 RAID-
    It would not boot up.
Though Snowy would appear as an available Start Up disk, each time it was selected as the Boot drive,
the Internal HD OS 10.5.7 booted instead.
I changed around the cables and tried repeatedly.
    Same result, no Snowy boot.
Even after the OS 10.4.11 external RAID was power down, and disconnected.
After some looking around, I found this forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136208&tstart=0
    Got me thinking.
I tried the USB, and it booted !
I tried the FW400, and it booted !
And mysteriously, at this point- I tried the FW800, and it booted !
And then, the MBP boots seemed to reliably boot from that external, via FW800.
    Bizarre.
Snow Cat needs to be taught originally how to find FW800 from the bottom up ?
Turns out, Snow Leopard doesn't like booting,
if the preceding boot was on the 10.4.11 RAID, and work was done with programs there.
So, once again, I repeated this process:
After working with programs on the 10.4.11 external HD,
the MBP would not boot the Snow Leopard external HD,
it defaulted to booting from the MBP internal HD OS 10.5 via FW800.
even though Snowy was selected for Start Up.
    This was the case repeatedly.
(It would also boot from the 10.4.11 external RAID, if it were selected for Start Up.)
(In each of these tests below, I only rebooted the computer at each test. I did no work with programs on the various HDs.)
SO, once again, at this point of the process:
I plugged in that Snowy external HD via FW400,
and it booted up fine !
Then I booted up from the Internal 10.5, and tried to boot Snowy via FW800 again.
    It worked !
Then I turned on the 10.4.11 RAID external HD, and tried to reboot from the Snowy external HD.
    It worked too !
Then I booted from the 10.4.11 RAID, it came up fine.
Then booted from the Snowy, it came up fine.
Then booted from the Internal HD 10.5, it came up fine.
Then booted from Snowy again, it came up fine.
Then I turned off the 10.4.11 HD, booted from Snowy, it came up fine.
Then booted from the Internal, it came up fine.
Then tried Snowy one last time, it came up fine.
    Anyway, the issue is:
    It works fine-
Except when I do work within the programs on the 10.4.11 external RAID.
Then I have to use FW400 or USB to get it to boot once again . . .
Regardless of whether the other external HD is removed from the system.
It's some sort of flaw, and totally repeatable in testing.
Hopefully, it will be fixed soon.
    Howard

  • Setup new iMac w/Snow Leopard & Migrate from PPC w/Leopard

I have been following two similar threads "Questions about a fresh install" and "Migrating Data from old iMac G5 (PPC) to new iMac QC i7" but I do not see exactly what I need to know.
My first attempt to migrate my stuff resulted in several apps that would not work (no surprise because of the change in the machine). I reinstalled Snow Leopard and all the bundled apps and tried "Migrate" again. Now I have two "users" one that is the fresh desktop but with none of the old apps or files the other looks like my old desktop but now missing some apps both old and new. Also I find my files buried in something called "deleted users". I am aware that some apps need to be reinstalled and I have the necessary "keys" for the ones that matter. The old machine is still running, thank goodness, and I also have a SuperDuper bootable backup of that drive but when I attach the external HD to the new iMac it doesn't appear anywhere.
What I would like to have is the new Snow Leopard desktop, a single "user" and all of my files available. This includes about 10,000 pictures dating back to my PC days. I believe I can get the main apps installed and running again but in the meantime I have to go back to the old G5 to pay bills and do banking. I'd like to be able to clean it up and sell it.
    Darrell McDonald
PS - I also have a retail copy of Leopard. Would it make any sense to install that on the new machine, then migrate Leopard-to-Leopard and subsequently re-install Snow Leopard?

    Darrell Mcdonald wrote:
You are correct, apps are there for all users. In the task bar, however, there are question marks for Address Book, Time Machine and another app called KopyMac that I had used before. These question marks are not active aliases they seem to be only place holders or reminders of what I had there. Of the three I can find only Time Machine in the apps file but without the external HD that is no use.
I assume by "task bar" you mean the Dock. If so, the icons in it are not exactly aliases but similar to them. When they turn into question marks, it means the link to the original is broken. To fix that, you drag them off the Dock & drop them on the desktop, where they disappear in a puff of "smoke." Then you replace them by dragging them into the Dock from their actual locations, usually but not always in the root level applications folder. The Address Book & Time Machine apps are installed in that folder during the Snow Leopard installation process. If Address Book is now missing, something has deleted it. KopyMac is not from Apple, so I can't say where it should be or why you can't find it.
The rest of what you have reported is also puzzling, either because your terminology is unclear or possibly because you have omitted mention of some things you have done. For instance, there should be no 'deleted users' folder unless you indeed did delete a user from System Preferences > Accounts. You say your external HD isn't recognized by the new Mac but not how it is connected to it.
This makes it hard to say if you have one problem or several, or what the cause(s) might be. If possible, try to provide more comprehensive information & be careful to use the clearest terminology you can. For example, include the exact name of folders & their path (location in the file system) where applicable.

  • Unable to access gateway and DNS via VPN (L2TP) with Snow Leopard Server

    Summary:
After rebooting my VPN server, i am able to establish a VPN (L2TP) connection from outside my private network. I am able to connect (ping, SSH, …) the gateway only until the first client disconnects. Then i can perfectly access all the other computers of the private network, but i cannot access the private IP address of the gateway.
Additionally, during my first VPN connection, my DNS server, which is on the same server, is not working properly with VPN. I can access it with the public IP address of my gateway. I can access it from inside my private network. A port scan indicates me that the port 53 is open, but a dig returns me a timeout.
    Configuration:
    Cluster of 19 Xserve3.1 - Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2
Private network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -> domain name: cluster
-> 1 controller, which act as a gateway for the cluster private network, with the following services activated:
DHCP, DNS, firewall (allowing all incoming traffic for each groups for test purposes), NAT, VPN, OpenDirectory, web, software update, AFP, NFS and Xgrid controller.
    en0: fixed public IP address -> controller.example.com
    en1: 192.168.1.254 -> controller.cluster
-> 18 agents with AFP and Xgrid agent activated:
    en1: 192.168.1.x -> nodex.cluster with x between 1 and 18
VPN (L2TP) server distributes IP addresses between 192.168.1.201 and 192.168.1.210 (-> vpn1.cluster to vpn10.cluster). Client informations contain the private network DNS server informations (192.168.1.254, search domain: cluster).
    _*Detailed problem description:*_
After rebooting the Xserve, my VPN server works fine except for the DNS. My client receives the correct informations:
    Configure IPv4: Using PPP
    IPv4 address: 192.168.1.201
    Subnet Mask:
    Router: 192.168.1.254
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
    Search domain: cluster
From my VPN client, i can ping all the Xserve of my cluster (192.168.1.1 to 18 and 192.168.1.254). If i have a look in Server Admin > Settings > Network, i have three interfaces listed: en0, en1 and ppp0 of family IPv4 with address 192.168.1.254 and DNS name controller.cluster.
The DNS server returns me timeouts when i try to do a dig from my VPN client even if i am able to access it directly from a computer inside or outside my private network.
After i disconnect, i can see in Server Admin that the IP address of my ppp0 interface has switch to my public IP address.
Then i can always establish a VPN (L2TP) connection, but the client receives the following informations:
    Configure IPv4: Using PPP
    IPv4 address: 192.168.1.202
    Subnet Mask:
Router: (Public IP address of my VPN server)
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
    Search domain: cluster
From my VPN client, i can access all the other computers of my network (192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.18) but when i ping my gateway (192.168.1.254), it returns me timeouts.
I have two "lazy" solutions to this problem: 1) Configure VPN and DNS servers on two differents Xserve, 2) Put the public IP address of my gateway as DNS server address, but none of these solutions are acceptable for me…
    Any help is welcome!!!

I would suggest taking a look at:
    server admin:vpn:settings:client information:network route definitions.
as I understand your setup it should be something like
    192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 private.
at least as a start. I just got done troubleshooting a similar issue but via two subnets:
