want to buy airport extreme, am using mountain lion.  Will this work ?  also,  my house is 5,500 square feet all on one floor.  Do I need an extender and which one?

...  If I purchase an express to extend is it hard to configure as an extender?
No, AirPort Utility prompts you with step-by-step questions and makes configuration simple.
The Express and Extreme have the same transmitter power specifications, so I suggest the $99 Express as an extender, should you need one. Beware that you cannot add a second Express to wirelessly extend the network any further - as the following excerpt from Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations explains:
Extended network range considerations
In the above example the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ is out of wireless range of the extended Wi-Fi base station ➋, therefore the extended Wi-Fi base station cannot join or extend the wireless network. The extended Wi-Fi base station must be moved to a location that is within Wi-Fi range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
Important Note
If another extended Wi-Fi base station ➋ is placed between the primary Wi-Fi base station ➊ and the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌, the extended Wi-Fi base station ➌ will not allow clients to join it. All extended Wi-Fi base stations must be in direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
A "roaming network" that Bob described, in which all base stations are connected with an Ethernet cable, is by far the best alternative.

  • HT4260 I am working with a later version of Airport Extreme's using Mountain Lion. Are these instructions suitable?

I am trying to setup an extended wireless network using 2 Airport Extremes (4th and 5th generation). I have ethernet around the house. I have my wireless network setup but cannot add the second AE. My broadbanc connection is via cable modem.
Any help would really be appreciated!
    Thanks
    Barbara

    Hello Barbara,
Things are very different now with the new version of AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion. Apple says that no instructions are really needed, since the setup is now much simpler than in the past.
Still, most users need a few hints to get going, and it's always good to check your connections first, to verify that the Ethernet "backbone" is working correctly before trying to add a second AirPort.
I understand that you already have one AirPort Exteme set up and working, which we will call AE 1.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on AE1 to your Ethernet connection for the house....probably a wall jack.
Temporarily, move your MacBook Pro to the location where you want to install AE2. Turn off the wireless on the MacBook Pro  (by clicking the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen). Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet wall port to the MacBook Pro, and check to see if you can get a good Internet connection with the MacBook Pro connected this way as a test.
If you can, then you know that the Ethernet wiring is functioning correctly. You can disconnect the Ethernet cable from the MacBook Pro now, and turn the wireless back on.
If you cannot get an Internet connection with the "test", then you'll need to do some additional troubleshooting before you can connect AE 2.
Post back on your results, and we will continue with the setup of AE 2.
I assume that AE 2 is new, and that you have not made any changes to this device, or tried to configure it yet.

  • "Semi-clean" install of Mountain Lion - will this work?

The stability of my mac was fantastic, until about 3 weeks ago, when I started to increasingly encounter spinning beach balls, the need to do force quits and the machine refusing to shut down.  The problem's only got worse over the intervening period.  My Time Machine was corrupted, so yesterday had to do a fresh backup.  That means that going back and doing a restore of my system before the problems began isn't an option.
Given all this, I think I need to do a clean install.  I've got my OS on an SSD and my data on an HDD (where the optical drive used to be).
The one thing I'm really not looking forward to is reinstalling and re-registering all the non-App Store apps, reseting all the prefs and settings and getting all the non-standard fonts back in order. So here's what I'm planning...
I've put aside a folder on the HDD, which has within it
copies of the various font folders, along with details of their paths, so after the clean install I can just swap them in.
a copy of my apps folder, so that similarly, I'd be able to simply swap it with the folder installed after the clean install.
Is there any reason that the fonts and apps wouldn't work, using this approach?  Apologies if there's a very basic reason that I've missed.
While I know that ideally I'd go and manually reinstall all the software, I'm time poor and I'm pretty sure the root cause of the problem has to do with corruption of the OS, so this would hopefully work, and remove the problems I'm currently having.
    I'm grateful for any advice!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Unable to connect to Airport Extreme since installing Mountain Lion

Unable to connect to Airport Extreme since installing Mountain Lion. If I go to Finder > Shared I can see it listed but then when I go to connect to it won't. I can see it in Airport Utility and connect to the internet but when I try and connect to the base station to use my hard drive / printer it won't connect?
Tech Support tried saying it could be the devices attached don't have an update for them yet but doesn't explain why I can't connect to the base station. In their defence I can see it in airport utility so the base station does work with the OS X
However I've just tried connecting by an ethernet cable and connects fine?

    Ok .
Power down the base station (Mine is connected to a 4 way so i down powered base station, printer and hard drive) powered back up and now when I go to finder then look at the shared section I can view my files on the base station.
    Hope this helps

  • Will 16Gb RAM on a Early 2011 2.7 Ghz i7 Macbook 13" cause any problem? Also i plan to upgrade to Mountain Lion, will it work?

I want to upgrade my machine with 16 GB RAM, it already has a G.Skill single RAM chip of 8gb. need help with the following. Will upgrading to 16Gb RAM on a Early 2011 2.7 Ghz i7 Macbook 13" cause any problem? Also i plan to upgrade to Mountain Lion, will it work?

It won't cause you any issues or problems....
it is however, suggested you install the same brand RAM that are of the same specs....
    1333MHz........
Installing different brands with different CL speed might cause issues....
so if you already have a G.Skill RAM installed, then install the same brand.

  • My Mac Book Pro using Mountain Lion will show a usb headset with a mic to select in the settings window. But the Rosetta Stone software I am using will not find the mic for me to select and use. What should I do?

Mac Book Pro with OS X Mountain Lion will not recognize headset mic via Rosetta Stone software. What should I do?

    Hi Illaass,
I am using version 3. I have used the apple/settings on my mac. The headset is appearing there and it is selected there. In the Rosetta Stone select/find window nothing shows up. It is blank. But the volume bars react when I speak and sliding the fader has the expected effect of raising and lowering the input. There is just no device showing up as the selected input device in the Rosetta Stone software.
I have done everything my Mac instructions say to uninstall and reinstall the Rosetta Stone software properly.
I'm guessing the problem may be in the licensing. I installed it first on the old hard drive that crashed. Maybe that used the terms of the license and now installing it in the new hard drive violates the license somehow. So that's why it will not work properly. It allows me to open the lessons and asks me if I want to continue from where I left off. I click continue. Then it asks me if I want to register the software. I click the tab for already registered software and click continue. Then nothing happens. So again I click on the button that indicates I want to continue lessons from where I left off. The same process happens with it asking me if I want to register the software. And it will not proceed through a lesson.

  • TS3988 I am using mountain lion.  iCloud works fine with my iMac iPads and iPhone with one annoying exception.  I cannot use the systems preferences on my iMac because I cannot log in.  When entering my apple id and password I get a window saying "You can

I cannot log into systems preferences for icloud on my imac.  icloud works on all devices including the imac, but I get the window "You can't sign in at this time" when using system preferences on the imac.  I am using mountain lion, but it didn't work on lion either.  Help

You may wish to try the following:
    1. Sign out of your account
(If you are unable to do this because System Preferences has frozen, Force Quit System Preferences and try again)
    2. When prompted, opt to delete, contacts, calendars etc from your Mac.
(You are only deleting this data from your Mac, not from iCloud, the data will be reinstated when you log back in. If you need to check that the data is in iCloud before deleting it go to iCloud.com and check each section for data)
    3. Having logged out, check that the iCloud accounts along with their data have disappeared from the Mail, Address Book and iCal Applications.
(If necessary, delete the iCloud accounts from each of these application separately from each Applications Preferences)
    4. At this point it may be worth trying to log into iCloud from the System Preferences iCloud settings again, if this works, all well and good, if it doesn't continue to step 5.
    5. Open your User Library folder in the Finder. (When in the Finder, go to the Go menu, hold down the option key (alt) and choose Library when it appears in the Go menu)
    6. Navigate to Library > Application Support > iCloud and drag the iCloud folder to your desktop. (This action only copies the folder and will provide you with a back up)
    7. Select the iCloud folder again in Library > Application Support and drag it to the trash, enter your administrators password when prompted.
    8. Restart your computer.
    9. You should now be able to enter your ID and Password in system Preferences > iCloud and log into your account. Check the services you wish to use and once you are satisfied it's working as it should, trashh the iCloud folder you copied to your desktop earlier.

  • Is it true that Mountain Lion will only work on the latest (within the last 3 years) Macs?

I have read somewhere that the developers version of Mountain Lion would only work on the latest Macs and I was wondering whether the soon to be released version will be the same.

They have published this list of compatible machines.

  • Can I use my Airport Extreme router with Mountain Lion?

I purchase my Airport Extreme about 2-3 years ago. My Internet service- Verizon, provides the modem. When I inserted the installation disc that came with the router I got an error message on my laptop saying that the systems were incompatible with one another.
I looked ror an airport update to resolve this but found nothing.
    Can anyone offer some advice?
Not being much of a Techie, I'm a bit afraid of just charging in and taking my chances.
    Thanks for the help.

Mountain Lion has already installed the latest version of AirPort Utility for you.
Look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility.
You can trash the old installation CD as it no longer useable.

  • Portforwaring on airport extreme v6 with mountain lion

can somone tell me how to port forward on the airport extreme?
    airport utility:6
    osx mountain lion

Are we talking about the private IP of the server you created or your public IP?  Private IP can be found by going to System Preferences, click on Network, and then clicking on WiFi or Ethernet (whichever you are using for your internet connection).  You will see under the status to the left your private IP (for example the private IP of my MacBook Pro is 10.0.1.20).
For public IP, the IP address all of your devices and computers share in your house this can easily be found by going to www.whatismyip.com.
If you are looking for the IP address for port forwarding, the private IP address of the server you are using to run Minecraft is what you need.  If you are needing to tell your friends the IP address of your server to connect to then the public IP address is what you need to give them.

  • How do you update the firmware on 1st Gen Airport Extreme in OSX Mountain Lion?

A friend gave me a old but never used 1st Gen Airport Extreme 802.11n WiFi Wireless Base Station.  I have a couple WiFi dead zones in my house and was told that I could daisy chain the Apple Airport Extreme off of my Verizon FIOS router/modem (802.11G) to fill in the dead spots.  During set up the Airport Utility told me that "This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later.  Go to AirPort Service and Support (link) for more information.
I updated the Airport Utility to the latest version (6.2) and I am still getting the same error message and no other option to update it's firmware.  Anyone know of a work around or am I fighting to losing battle here.  I tried to contact Apple support, but when I entered the serial number for the Base Station it said the product was over 5 years old and didn't qualify for support service program.

was told that I could daisy chain the Apple Airport Extreme off of my Verizon FIOS router/modem (802.11G) to fill in the dead spots
Not sure what you mean by "daisy chain".  The AirPort Extreme cannot "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal from the FIOS router if you are planning to do this using wireless only.
You always need at least 2 Apple routers to be able to "extend a wireless network" using wireless only. The Apple routers would not be compatible with FIOS routers for this type of purpose.
If you can connect the AirPort Extreme to the FIOS router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then the AirPOrt could be configured to provide more wireless signal coverage that way. If you cannot run the cable, it might be possible to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send a signal over the existing AC power lines in your home.
When you open AirPort Utility 6.x and a firmware update is available, there is usually a red number next to the AirPort Exreme icon. Click on the red number......or if it does not appear, click on the  AirPort Extreme icon and then hold down the option key on a Mac as you click on the Version number that is is displayed to see more "options".

  • HT5286 I want to buy a new os x mountain lion for my mac

Im running of os x lion and no beed to reinstslling maverics which is cant boot and cant install to my mac even im using internet recovery.

    Mountrain Lion: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
Mavericks is better and it is free, IMHO.
The tech requirements for Mountain Lion and Mavericks are the same. If you don't meet them for Mavericks, you don't meet them for Mountain Lion too.

  • Airport, Airport Express, iPhone & PS3 wireless network will this work?

Hi I need help with the above,
I've got an iMac 15" G4 800Mhz, it is fitted with a standard airport card, the G4 is connected to the internet via ethernet to a Zyxel P-600 Series ADSL modem. I have also been streaming itunes (using airtunes) to a seperate hi-fi amp in another room using an Airport Express Base Station, THIS ALL WORKS.
I have since bought an iPhone and a Playstaion3 (PS3) and want this all to work together but does not. It would seem that the Airport Express Base Station is the dominant part of this network and I want to change this priority. No matter how far I delve I cannot find the answer. Basically I want the following setup:
iMac G4 (with Airport Card) that is connected to the internet via ethernet to be the 'main Base Station' (not the Airport Express as is currently), I then want to continue streaming Airtunes to the Airport Express and also use this device as a booster for the wireless network. The reason for the new wireless setup is to enable the iPhone to connect to the Internet (the iphone currently sees the network but cannot connect to the internet because the Airport Express is NOT connected to the ADSL Modem), I also want the PS3 to connect to this network.
Am I asking too much of the Airport Card (The one in the G4)? or should I simply buy the new Airport Extreme Base Station and start again?
Any help would really be appreciated, Paul

sorry if i sound stupid but does that mean that if i'm using the AX to stream music (using Airtunes) I cannot simultaneously use it as a wi-fi extender?
    That situation is possible.
If so can I set up the AX to just stream music and then use an Airport Extreme Base Station hard wired to the ADSL Modem and the iMAc and connect the iPhone and PS3 to the internet via the AEBS wi-fi network. Essentially creating one wi-fi network for iPhone/ PS3 wireless connection and a seperate Airtunes network for wireless music streaming, or am I just dreaming, cheers for your help.
Sure you can do that. But then you will have to decide if you want to stream music OR you want to be on the internet. Your computers can't connect to both at the same time.
You probably want to do the above, but configure your AX to join the wireless network provided by the AEBS. Then you will only have a single wireless network and you can stream music, print, and surf the internet all at the same time.

  • AirPort Express/Time Capsule WDS Network - will this work?

Have recently bought a Time Capsule but realised that it won't do what I want with my Linksys ADSL wireless router. I think I understand how to make it work with an AirPort Express, but would appreciate it if someone could confirm my ideas before I buy even more hardware!
My situation is that my ADSL line comes in to the house on the ground floor. There's no extension phone sockets and I don't want or need them. My home office is on the first floor.
What I want is to have my ADSL modem and a wireless device on the ground floor, the Time Capsule in the home office with mac and XBOX making wired connections to it, and a USB printer also connected.
If I get a DSL modem and then connect an AirPort Express to that, can I then set up WDS so that the Time Capsule becomes an extension of the WLAN and I can connect the devices to the Time Capsule via wires? Or do I need an AirPort Extreme to do this instead of Express? Or is it just plain not going to work?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

I am using a Time Capsule with an 802.11g Airport Express with a WDS network. In my case the Time Capsule is the main device and the Airport Express is the remote device, but I'd think it would work the other way. Just make sure you're using "Airport Utility", not "Airport Admin Utility" to configure it.
One other thing: I found it easiest to reset both devices to factory default settings and use the Airport Utility wizard to set up the WDS network on both devices. Good luck!
    My network:
DSL ]--[ Time Capsule )))((( Airport Express
