Want to enhance wifi strength - router in one room, wifi capable computer in another

I need to enhance the wifi signal in my home in order to utilize a wifi ready computer on another floor. The wifi indicates 2 out of 5 bars on the wifi indicator, but frequently loses the signal completely. I have several coaxial ports around the house and have heard that there is an old school Motorola device out there that I can use to boost the wifi signal.
I am using the router in the room where the fios wire enters the residence and want to leave it there....any suggestions?

The "old school Motorola" device is MoCA bridge.  It will provide an Ethernet port active on your LAN anywhere you have coax.  You'd then need to plug a WiFi access point or router into the Ethernet port.
Or, you could pickup an old Actiontec WiFi router online and use it as a single bridge and access point.
There are lots of discussions of how to do this in these forums.  Spend some time searching and looking around and you'll find them.

No one here can answer the question (if or when that might happen). We are users here and do not speak for Apple. In fact, it violates the TOU to speculate about future Apple plans.

  • I want to setup the time capsule on one network but use it on another

I want to back up all my music onto a time capsule, but take the time capsule to different location so that I may have my music there as well.
    Can I do this?

You will almost certainly have to re-configure the Time Capsule to work on the "other" network, but the data on the hard drive will not be affected when you do this.

  • How do I play music bought on one computer on another authorized PC

I am unable to figure out how to play some songs i bought on iTunes with my wife's computer on another computer that i have authorized.

Have you transferred the music to the other computer? If that sounds like a stupid question, apologies. However, it is a not uncommon misconception that the act of authorizing the computer makes music downloaded on a different computer instantly accessible. iTunes only allows you to download the content once. You have to move it to your other authorized computer yourself. Burn it to a disk, transfer it over a network, etc.

Normally the phone will choose the strongest signal.

  • Sudden weak wifi in one room

Within the past month or so my wife and I have both noticed that in our bedroom all of our apple products (iPad, mini, and phones) have become very unreliable for things like YouTube or Netflix loading/buffering, and often standard websites don't work at all. We've both tried resetting everything and also reset the router. All other devices in the house, including a blu ray player in the same room, have no issues. The products also show a full strength wifi connection but don't work, though as soon as we leave the bedroom everything does. Any ideas what might have caused this and what the solution might be?

Check your router for these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4199
That may help, but in the end, the strength that the Apple products are receiving are just not very strong for some reason in your one room only.  DIfferent product use different band like a,b,g,n so one type of device can have a stong signal while another has a weak one if one band is having an issue in the router or otherwise having an issue penetrating walls.
You can also try resetting the router to factory settings and updating the firmware.  I used to have this same issue with a Linksys router, but then I finally replaced with with an Airport Extreme and the beamforming technology eliminated all issues.  I now have 100% strength in 95% of my home and outside to.

  • Installation tomorrow -- want to use my own router with ONT-611

Tomorrow I am having Verizon FIOS installed (internet only, no TV or phone services).  I've been reading this morning about using my own router, which I would prefer.  Previous owners of the house had FIOS so there is already an ONT-611 hanging off the side of the house, and there is the battery backup box hanging inside the garage.  Also, there is an ethernet cable already ran through the cinderblock wall which hangs inside my garage.
    Now, here's what I've read:
    1. This ONT-611 does not support MoCA
    2. The ethernet port on the ONT-611 only runs at 100mbps
I have 16 runs of CAT6 in my house which terminates to a rack in my garage which houses a 24-port gigabit switch.  I would like to swing one of those runs over to the existing ethernet cable so I can connect it to my router (a small linux computer which two NICs running shorewall).  I'll have to figure out how to connect those cables (both are male RJ45)... otherwise, will this configuration be supported?
As I said, I will not have TV services and do not plan to subscribe in the future.  Is there any reason why I would want to go with another configuration (aka use coax and the supplied actiontec?).
    Thank you!

The link smith6612 provided has good info, but these are some things I can think of, and items I have done.
I would let Verizon do their supported install with the Actiontec router set up with Ethernet WAN. That is a supported install. This way you have their router should you have issues at a later date, you can put it back to the default configuration. After Verizon leaves, you can configure it as you wish. See if they will extend the cable from the ONT over to your rack. They probably will run a new cable for you. Put the Actiontec at your rack and connect one of its LAN ports to your switch until after the install. Then if you have your Linux PC in close proximity to two of your 16 outlets you could loop two of those those back to your rack. One to the router and one to your switch. Actually you could just use the router as a second switch if you turn off DHCP and connect one LAN port to the ONT and another LAN port to the cable going to your Shorwall's WAN. Many many ways. Shorewall WAN side would need to be configured properly for your ONT and FiOS set up. That is why I say let them do their thing first. Some of the older installs are still using PPPoE and some newer are DHCP. that would make a difference on how you configure your Linux box's WAN if it is directly connected to the ONT VIA the cable or a switch, which could just be the Actiontec without the WAN ports used. If you use the Actiontec as a switch directly off of the ONT, be sure to turn off DHCP and the WiFi first, and only use two lan ports. DON'T pull more than one public IP from the ONT.
I have had various configurations, and always Ethernet from the ONT. The original ONT 610 did not support MOCA and it had to be bridged from the Actiontec or a NIM-100. I have connected my Linux IP Cop with Dan's Guardian Proxy Filter directly to the ONT and used the Actiontec as a MOCA bridge for my TV services. Right now I have the Actiontec connected directly to the ONT first via Ethernet WAN, and have 2 DVRs, and 2 STBs for the TV. The Actiontec and TVs are considered The DMZ, with my Linux box called the moat. All my workstations and server sit behind the Linux proxy filter firewall. I set fixed IPs on my private network via MAC and DHCP, and the proxy is transparent. With exceptions on the filter for certain computers.
With my configuration, I can call with any issues and it is supported. Short of my Linux box and PCs. Which I don't want anyone into anyway. I have been thinking of putting the Linux box back in front, so I am not running dual NAT, but I need to have a supported platform for testing and using FiOS features. Thus I put the Actiontec back in front, and my stuff is safer behind the second NAT.

  • 2 WRT54G's - which one to be main router, which one to be repeater?

I currently use a WRT54G v.3 router with one computer connected via wire and other devices accessing wifi.  Wifi signal is weak in various parts of the house and doesn't extend to the backyard.  I have another WRT54G router (ver 6) that I want to use as a repeater.
Based on research I've done, it sounds like the v.3 router is better suited to accommodate DD-WRT firmware, whereas if I try to do this with the ver 6 router, it is more sensitive and likely to be bricked.
    Should I do the following:
    - replace the v.3 main router with the ver 6 router as the one connected to the DSL and to the wired computer
    - change the firmware on the v.3 router to DD-WRT and utilize this one as the bridge?
Is this the proper approach?  I strongly prefer not to purchase a dedicated repeater if I can use the 2nd router to do the job.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can try that if you don't wish to purchase an additional equipment like a Range Expander or an Access Point...

Note : also when i hold it up and move in the same room ... the speed changes and somewhere speed up ... and in another location speed down ..
    thanks for you all ...

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

  • RA VPN into ASA5505 behind C871 Router with one public IP address

    Hello,
I have a network like below for testing remote access VPN to ASA5505 behind C871 router with one public IP address.
    PC1 (with VPN client)----Internet-----Modem----C871------ASA5505------PC2
The  public IP address is assigned to the outside interface of the C871. The  C871 forwards incoming traffic UDP 500, 4500, and esp to the outside  interface of the ASA that has a private IP address. The PC1 can  establish a secure tunnel to the ASA. However, it is not able to ping or  access PC2. PC2 is also not able to ping PC1. The PC1 encrypts packets  to PC2 but the ASA does not to PC1. Maybe a NAT problem? I understand  removing C871 and just use ASA makes VPN much simpler and easier, but I  like to understand why it is not working with the current setup and  learn how to troubleshoot and fix it. Here's the running config for the C871 and ASA. Thanks in advance for your help!C871:

That is the least useful model.. it has one ethernet port.. so there is no way of using it with ethernet in the garage and the wireless is weak single band.
Here is what I would buy.

Even the next one.. if it is not too expensive is a fair bit better.

  • Wifi home network no longer showing on ipad in one room of house

All of a sudden, ipad first gen won't recognize wifi home network or any network in one room of house while other devices work fine in same room.  I've tried to update firmware for router, reset the ipad to factory defaults and "forget network" but none have solved problem. How can I fix this? Thanks!

Do a Google search using apple airport extreme setup and you'll get links to a User Guide and setup instructions.
     Cheers, Tom

  • IPhone 5 wifi works in one room but not the other.

I have an iPhone 5 and the wifi is unreliable. It works in the room with the router but when I walk down the hall it doesn't work. I'm talking 20 feet away. So frustrating because the phone is almost worthless. Why would it connect but only in such close range? No other devices have this problem. Yes, I've turned the wifi on and off. Yes, I've restarted the router. Yes, I've checked the WEP. It just makes no sense that it would work in one room but not the next room. Help!

    Hello Gnpco,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:

Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • WiFi on my MacBook Pro works in one room but not in others

If I bring my MacBook Pro next to an iMac in one room it will connect (albeit slowly) to the internet. When I walk 2 metres into my own bedroom it simply disconnects and stops working, while my phone stays connected and at a similar speed.
The MacBook will recognise my WiFi, and will ask me for the password, even though it's been entered dozens of times. When  I enter this password it says it's incorrect. If I then walk back into the other room WiFi rrconnects.
    What's wrong here?
My MacBook Pro is a late 2011 13" model.

Wireless interference, probably, but Apple's Wireless Diagnostics may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:
The network analysis and diagnostic tests will take several minutes to complete:
When it completes, if your wireless network is functioning properly the following will result:
If something is amiss, supposedly the results will be different and you will be presented with helpful information.
Assuming your connection is "working as expected" select Continue to summary and click Continue:
Ignore the pre-populated text field, which is provided as a place for you to type in additional information should Apple ask for it in the course of obtaining technical assistance from them. Apple has no way of knowing where your router is located in your home, and certainly doesn't know if you even have an upstairs bedroom closet.
    Click Continue.
The next step will also take a few minutes:
When it finishes, you will be presented with a summary that may or may not be useful to you:
The above result is uninteresting, but if there are additional actions for you to consider they would be included in the screenshot above.
The WirelessDiagnostics-xxx.tar.gz file deposited on your Desktop can be dragged to the Trash, or you may wish to expand it and examine its contents. It's up to you.

  • I'm in the process of creating a WiFi network from my IMac to my LG HDTV.  I am incorporating a LG WiFi capable Blu-ray player and will purchase an Apple Express or Apple Extreme router. I need some advise on using this aquipment.

I need help in determining the best way to create a WiFi network from my IMAC to a WiFi capable LG Blu-Ray player that will connect to my LG HDTV.  Since I will only need one network I need to know which is the best Apple Airport router to use (Express or Extreme).  What is the correct way to connect these units?  It seem self explanitory, but I'm checking my thinking.  My HDTV is about 20' from where the airport router will be installed with a wall between them.  Has anyone created this network?  Is this the best way to create a WiFi network?
