Wanted: Open file dialog without preview

Hello all,
I am struggling with the available Folder and File methods in ExtendScript.
What I need to do is have the user select a file, but I do not want to show a preview of the contents of that file, which will not be opened at all, just moved to another location. The preview may look pretty scary, so I want to remove that from the dialog. With the File.openDialog method, there is no apparent method to make it go away. I am guessing this is a standard Windows dialog that is called from ExtendScript.
So I thought of a selectDialog method instead. According to the JavaScript Tools Guide, the selectDialog method can return either a Folder or a File object, depending on what the user has selected. But in the dialog I can only select folders. I tried the selectDialog method on a File, but that does not seem to work at all, as the method is only defined for a Folder.
So I am stuck with the openDialog and I don't like the sight of the nasty preview when selecting some binary file. Any ideas ?
Ciao

  • How to disable Open File dialog in Preview

After I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite, Preview app started popping up the Open File dialog box every time I launch it.  It used to just launch and do nothing.
Is there a way to prevent Preview in Yosemite to present the Open File dialog box to the user?  I vaguely recall a "defaults write" kind of command that would disable this feature.
The use case this behavior is breaking is as follows:
    1. Want to take a screenshot and save it to a file.
    2. Press Cmd-Ctrl-Shift-4 to snap a screenshot and save it on the clipboard.
    3. Cmd-Space to bring up Spotlight, type Preview and launch Preview
    4. Cmd-N to instruct Preview to paste the contents of the clipboard to a new file.
With Yosemite, step-4 above breaks, since I have to hit Esc first to clear the dialog box.

Try this it will give the full directory structure.

  • Why can't I preview indd files within InDesign's open file dialog box?

    Hello all,
It is bad enough that Adobe doesn't add a plugin to preview any Adobe source file within Windows Explorer (well, except for PDF but I think Microsoft did that).
But I find it ridiculous that I cannot preview .indd source files inside InDesign's Open File dialog box. It just states, "No preview available". I am sure this failure is tied into what Windows can preview... still, not a good excuse!
This is also the same problem in both Illustrator and Photoshop.... neither Adobe program can preview their own file format!
WHY?  OR How can I correct this?
[UPDATE: SageThumbs | SourceForge.net seems to partially work on many Photoshop files (works reasonably well as long as I limit the file size to 70mb), it doesn't seem to work on Illustrator files (despite the claim), and it doesn't work on InDesign.]
Still, the question remains, why isn't Adobe taking responsibility for this?

    I think you all misunderstood.
I am referring to opening files *within* the Adobe software. Example: Inside InDesign, I click File > Open... I see a list of my .indd files and to the right is a window with the words, "Select a file to preview."  If I select an .indd file, I think it is reasonable to assume that I will see a preview of the .indd file... but NO, I just see the message, "No preview available."
In my opinion, this is a failing of Adobe!
    > Use bridge
Why would I want to open a separate program just to see thumbnails? Sure Bridge has its uses when I want to look at a lot of different images but I am only talking about quickly seeing a thumbnail before I open a single file within either InDesign, Photoshop, or Illustrator.
    Q. If Bridge can render thumbnails, why on Earth would Adobe not place the preview code into the open file dialog of each program?

  • "Preview this File" Does Nothing + Blinding GTK+ open file dialogs...

...I have two problems in KDEMod4...did anyone have these problems and how do you fix them?
Right clicking a file and clicking "Preview this File" does nothing...including folder views, Konqueror, and Dolphin.
GTK+ open file dialogs alternate between the normal background for my text box and blindingly white background.

    Hi,
I also have the same problem, but with my JNI and C++ expertise, I was able to isolate the problem.
    My platform:
    - Microsoft Windows XP, Family Edition (French), Version 2002, Service Pack 3
    - JRE 1.6.0_21
In the source of the JDK6 (Src/windows/classes/sun/awt/windows/WDesktopPeer.java), the Desktop.open(file) calls the native method
    ShellExecute(*uri.toString()*, "open")
For example, if you try to open "c:\helloworld.pdf",
    uri.toString() = "*file:/c:/helloworld.pdf*"if I call ShellExecute("C:\\helloworld.pdf", "open"), it works
but if I call ShellExecute(" file:/c:/helloworld.pdf", "open"), it doesn't work on my platform.
In both case, the ShellExecuteW or ShellExecuteA function of the Windows API return the integer 42 (> 32), saying that the functions succeeded. If the file object is not correct, the function should return a value <= 32.
=> The bug is not due to Java implementation, but to a bug in the Windows API.
    Other remark:
I also tried the "ShellExec_RunDLL" entry point of the Shell32.dll library using RunDll32 utility. Both commands below are running correctly:
    rundll32 SHELL32.DLL,ShellExec_RunDLL "C:\hello.pdf"
    rundll32 SHELL32.DLL,ShellExec_RunDLL "file:/C:/hello.pdf"My conclusion:
    1) A workaround could be implemented in the JRE: use the file path without the "file:/" protocol prefix.
    2) This bug seems to be present only one some version of Windows XP (to confirm).

  • RW2 preview in finder and "Open file" dialog

    Hello,
I run into a curiosity with RW2 file format (from LX3 and FZ38). In Finder, RW2 preview is not displayed and only default icon (black icon with text exec in corner). The same RW2 files does have correct preview, when I browse them in "Open file" dialog window (for example Safari > File > Open File...).
How it is possible the Finder and Open dialog do have different settings? Is it possible to copy these settings?

  • I want to change the default file type in the Open File dialog - e.g. from Word to All Files

I want to change the default file type in the Open File dialog - most recently specifically in Adobe Acrobat, from Adobe Files to All Files, so I don't have to do it again and again manually.  Is this possible?  Is it an OS setting or an app-specific setting?

The Apps set the default to the file type it can open, sort of. However, there normally isn't a type specified. All document types that the app can handle will be offered.
Adobe, and Microsoft, tend to roll their own dialogs, so they may not be standard. I don't have Acrobat, so I can't verify that. If Adobe is puting a file type selector in their open file dialogs, it would be up to them to store the preferences.
EDIT: I checked Reader, and i see what you mean. Not terribly useful.

  • What does the open file dialog do 'under the hood' and is there a way to simulate it

What does the open file dialog do 'under the hood' and is there a way to simulate it?
I have a bug in my code (that I've posted about before, here) which I can't fix at the moment, but I do have a workaround.
    Briefly, the bug:
I call a dll from a function node, to initialise and run a spectrometer. If I start up the PC, LabVIEW and run my vi the code runs without complaint, the first call to the dll to initialise the spectrometer doesn;t return an error but the spectrometer is not detected either.
I've tried various solutions, see the link above, and none work
    The workaround:
If, at any time before running the code containing the function node I open an 'open file' dialog window, select the dll and click ok/hit enter then everything is fine. When I run the main code the spectrometer is detected.
I use an express vi to open the file dialog, I specify the start path and file name as constant inputs and just click ok/hit return when the dialog pops up. I don't do anything with the dialog outputs. In fact the vi that contains the open file dialog can be run before the project containing the bug is even open.
I have to do this everytime I turn the PC on.
    So, either
    1) Can somewone suggest a fix for the original bug?
    2) What is the easiest way to simulate the enter keypress when the open file dialog pops up
    or
    3) Can someone tell me what the open file dialog does under the hood that somehow causes the dll to work and can it be simulated in straight LabVIEW
I suspect that the dll itself is dodgy ( I have in the past talked to the supplier but not got very far, and I will try again but I would like a quick, temporary solution too). I'm guessing that the file dialog is making some kind of check on the file, and possibly registering its presence with the OS (winXP). I tried using the file/folder exists vi to see if checking the file like that worked but no luck.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Dave

    Hi David
I am very conscious about thread hijacking but this sounded like my issue so I hope you dont mind me asking about your issue. I am hoping that you have a spectrometer from the same vendor as me and its not just me seeing an Error 1097 issue. My spectrometer is from a company called Stellarnet.
So far I have unable to get it to work with other VIs. There is one condition where I can get it to work but its no good for me.
    Case 1
I open the VI in a fresh labview environment with no other VIs in memory. The code runs with no issue.
    Case 2
Labview is not opened. I double click the spectrometer VI in windows explorer.  The VI opens but it fails to run resulting in Error 1097. Personally, I dont see the difference between this and Case 1 above and yet it fails.
    Case 3
If I already have other VI's in memory and try to load the spectrometer VI and run it fails with Error 1097. This case is the one that most important to me. I have a test executive that will load test VIs dynamically and I can't get this to work. Same problem Error 1097.
I wanted to share what I have seen with you and to let you know that maybe somebody else has the same issue. I am convinced its the DLL but the vendor dis-agreed saying it was LabVIEW. I couldn't convince him otherwise.
    Thanks in advance

  • Open File dialog window when setting the value of a path type input argument in a VI call

    Hi,
I am new to TestStand (running 4.0) and I want to create a sequence of VIs to turn on, setup and measure a device. One of my VIs sends a configuration file to my device. An input argument to this VI is the path of the config file. I would like to make it simple to modify this path when setting up the sequence by popping up the File Open dialog window and choose my file. Is this possible? I do not want to manually change the file during execution, just to have multiple calls of one VI, each call opening a different file according to the path given to it during the setup.
So far I have only succeeded in manually entering the absolute path each time I add this step. What makes it even more annoying is the fact that LabVIEW interprets the path with the escape codes, rendering the path unusable. Manually adding a 2nd backslash at each '\' occurence adds another step to the process. I tried both String and Path type of inputs, and the SearchandReplace() or ToUpper() (trying to bypass the escape codes) functions in TestStand don't seem to help m.
Your help is very much appreciated,
    Fred

    Eudaemonic,
If you want to create a series of easy to configure step types so others can develop sequence files easily, you could use custom step types. When you create a custom step type you implement your own configuration dialog. Since you have control over what controls you expose in your configuration dialog, you can design it so the desired path is selected using a open file dialog. Refer to chapter 13 of the TestStand reference manual for more information about custom step types.
If you do not want to create a custom step type but you still want to give access to your sequence developers to pre-configured steps, you can use templates. A step template is a snapshot of a step that you can reuse later. Let's assume that instead of asking your users to edit the step to enter the desired path, you create several step templates with different pre-configured paths and based on their applications requirements they could use the appropriate template. Refer to the NI TestStand Help for more information about the Templates list on the Insertion Palette.
    Hope it helps.

  • Open File Dialog - JSP pages

If I create a jsp page with an open file dialog will it work no matter what OS people are running? What I want to do is attach a file. It would be preferrable if I could set a "working" directory and when I open up the dialog it starts in that directory. It has to work with Windows, Macs, and Linux . If there is no way to set the "working" directory, can a cookie be created that remembers the last directory accessed from the page so that when they open up the dialog it opens up under the last directory accessed?

there is a html input type that sparks up the OS native filechooser. Thus, it should be platform independent. You should look into Apache Commons FileUpload, as it makes the process of uploading/sending files ridiculously easy.

  • Some qt only programs are crashing opening the "Open File" dialog

    Hello Archers,
I'm having some trouble to find out what's crausing the crashes, so i can properly fill a bug report upstream.
    Here is the issue:
    * After an upgrade from glibc 2.13-5 to glibc 2.14-4, some qt-only apps are crashing when i open the "Open File" dialog. This only happens when using specific KDE 4.6.4 or KDE 4.6.5 styles, like Oxygen and QtCurve.
    * Before i upgrade KDE from 4.6.4 to 4.6.5, i downgraded glibc and its dependencies to glibc 2.13-5 and the bug was gone. After upgrading KDE to 4.6.5, i didn't try the downgrade again because KDE 4.6.5 requires glibc 2.14 and the process of downgrading become unsustainable.
    * I tried removing the crashing apps data from my home directory and the crash still exists. I also tried to create a new user and start the apps from that new environment and the apps crashes, so the bug is not user-specific.
    * I tried replacing the binary nvidia driver with xf86-video-nouveau but the issue persists.
    * The apps crashing (and not applying the kde theme) are the following:
    => opera 11.50
When opening the "Open File" dialog, it crashes with the following message:
    ------------- begin ---------------------------------
    $ opera --sync

    (operapluginwrapper:2349): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x740001c unexpectedly destroyed
The program 'operapluginwrapper' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
      (Details: serial 547 error_code 3 request_code 18 minor_code 0)
      (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    ------------- end ---------------------------------
    => vlc 1.1.10
When opening the "Open Directory" dialog, it crashes with the following message:

    ------------- end ---------------------------------
    * Using other qt-only apps, like qmmp or UMPlayer the bug doesn't occur.
So, what do you thing of this? Am i the only one with this issue? I already reported the bug report on https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/24991 and https://bugs.opera.com/wizard/, but since i latter found out that this is not opera specific, i don't know where to fill the report.
    Thanks in advance.

i had to install vlc and opera to test - but i'm afraid i don't get the errors you are seeing.
so far, qt designer is the only application i've found that crashes when opening file dialogs.

  • How to get an open file dialog in Forms 9i?

Although in online help I can find the get_file_name function just like it was in Forms 6.0, at runtime this wonderful function doesn't seem to do anything.
Furthermore, there is no more d2kwutil.pll, nor d2kwutil.dll.
How could I get an open file dialog?

    Hi,
actually this functionality does not work. The reason for this is that Forms9i is Web only and there is no functionality downloaded with the generic Java Applet. For the moment I filed an enhancement request to have this on our radar. Meanwhile, if you need thi sfunctionality you can help yourself by writing a PJC that opens a dialog and performs the action that you want to.

  • Open file dialog box - Excel 2011

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask a question about running Office 2011 under Mavericks.
Since upgrading to OSX 10.9, something very odd seems to have happend to the open file dialog box in Excel. The list of the files in the current folder is displayed, but the filename column is really narrow showing just 7 characters of each name. In contrast the date modified column is incredibly wide. I can manually adjust the filename column to make it wider so I can read the filenames, but each time I reopen Excel it has defaulted back to being very narrow.
Does anyone know if there a preference setting somewhere that I can change in order to make the width default to something more readable so I don't have to manually change it every time I want to open a file. The Word and Powerpoint open dialog boxes appear normal, so the problem seems to be confined to Excel.
I had been running the same version of Office 2011 under Snow Leopard and the change to Excel only appeared after upgrading the OSX 10.9.

  • Illustrator CS3 crashes in "Open file" dialog when making a copy of a file

    Hi!
I have a user, who has quite a weird problem. We use the Design Standard CS3 package, since we can't afford to upgrade all 20 users to CS5 right now.
The problem occurs in Illustrator, when she goes to the "Open File" dialog. She often makes copies of files in there (ctrl+c, ctrl+v), so she has a backup of the file she's currently working on. Why she won't use Explorer to do that, I can't say.. she said something about it being easier this way.
The problem is, that often when she presses ctrl+v Illustrator crashes without warning. Usually when Illustrator crashes there's a warning about not enough memory, an error report or stuff like that, but none of that happens. It's fully patched (13.0.2), and there's no problem with the Print Spooler or the default printer.
I'm unable to replicate it on my computer, unfortunately, so I'm turning to you. Have any of you ever heard about this, seen it somewhere - and do you know what causes it?
    Best regards,
