WARNING: Actions on button and MovieClip

I have the following code that I am trying to get to work
with ActionScript 3.0:
on (rollOver) {
gotoAndPlay("s1");
on (releaseOutside, rollOut) {
this.gotoAndPlay("s2");
on (release) {
this.gotoAndPlay("s2");
The problem is that ActionScript 3.0 will not allow the
script on a MovieClip instance. I am at a loss with what to do, I
work well with examples, so I have posted 2 source FLA that are
identical, the only difference is that one targets ActionScript 2.0
(and works), the other targets ActionScript 3.0 (and does not
work).
Please
take
a look

There is no need to grasp the changes that fast. You can
still publish files for AS2.
Personally though I am always amazed that folks are still
using the on(clipEvent) style of coding. Generally that style of
coding should have gone away with the introduction of the
MovieClip.onClipEvent syntax with Flash 6 – introduced in
Spring of 2002. If you have been programming AS since 2002 and are
still relying solely on on(clipEvent) then you have bigger issues
than AS3. If you have come to AS more recently I just wonder why
this style was the one you adopted. (By "you" I don't mean you
– tmcquage – specifically. I mean you in the general
sense, and I include all of the Flash community in why did we allow
this to happen.)
You could probably answer that question yourself quick than
posting here! But I just tested it and the stop(); works fine.
I would recommend sticking with AS2 for the time being. Learn
how to use all the movieclip methods from the main timeline, not
from on an instance. Then the change over to AS3 won't be such a
shock. Even if you never go to AS3, you will be so happy you
stopped using instance code. Really.

  • WARNING: Actions on button

    Hi
    I do not understand why I am getting this warning below
    WARNING: Actions on button or MovieClip instances are not supported in ActionScript 3.0.
    All scripts on object instances will be ignored.
    Can someone help?
    mimi

    You can still use pretty much any objects that you have ever used before, though that's not saying they haven't changed in some way. In AS3 to manage things like buttons and other interactions the primary code approach involves creating event listeners and event handler functions.  Here is a description of how you would approach coding a button, though the same could apply to a movieclip....
    Let's say you create a button symbol.  Since it is a button, it is already a self animating object that will react to mouse interactions, but only visually at this stage.  The first thing you need to do to make it useful code-wise is to assign it a unique instance name.  So you drag a copy of it out to the stage from the library, and while it's still selected, you enter that unique instance name for it in the Properties panel... let's say you name it "btn1"
    In AS3, to make a button work with code, you need to add an event listener and event handler function for it.  You might need to add a few (for different events, like rollover, rollout, clicking it, but for now we'll just say you want to be able to click it to get a web page to open.  In the timeline that holds that button, in a separate actions layer that you create, in a frame numbered the same as where that button exists, you would add the event listener:
    btn1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, btn1Click);
    The name of the unique function for processing the clicking of that button is specified at the end of the event listener assignment, so now you just have to write that function out:
    function btn1Click(evt:MouseEvent):void {
       gotoAndPlay("site_section");
    Here's some of what's involved there:
    evt:MouseEvent - the event listeners throws an argument automatically which the function must be set up to receive.  In this case I have given that argument a variable name of evt, though I could have chosen anything.
    :void - this defines the class of the value that the function will return.  In this case, the function does not return anything, so "void" is used.  If it did return a value, you would see a line containing "return xyz"; in the function (where xyz is not literal, it simply represents the variable or value being returned) and the :void would be rplaced with some other class such as :String, :int, Date, etc....
    In AS3, in strict mode, it is necessary to identify the types/classes of the variables being created, which is why you see :String, :MouseEvent, etc... showing up everywhere.
    Now, to create another button with a unique function for it, you could just drag another copy of it from the library, give it a unique name, say btn2, copy/paste the code from btn1 and replace "btn1" with "btn2" in that copied code.

  • Actions on button or MovieClip instances are not supported in ActionScript 3.0?

    I have recently updated my Flash and I seriously regret it as everything seems to of changed. For instance I want to publish a movie i created in Action Script 3.0. In this movie i have buttons which have actions applied to them and everytime i go to publish the site, it brings up the error
    'WARNING: Actions on button or MovieClip instances are not supported in ActionScript 3.0. All scripts on object instances will be ignored.'
    How do I go about keeping my 3.0 elements but having buttons with actions applied to them. I am a complete beginner with Flash by the way so the answer would need to be completely straight forward.
    Thanks!

    okay, just to simplify this even further and to break it into steps..
    1: I Create a new button.
    2: I give it an instance name of say 'button'
    3: I place the following code in the timeline
    button.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,callFunction);
    function callFunction(e:Event):void{
    gotoAndPlay();
    Now here is where I am stuck. What do you need to add to this to navigate to another scene?
    Thanks again!!

  • Dynamic actions on button and dynamic column name

    Hi!ynam
    I want to create a dynamic action on button click in my tabular form.
    I have a select list with values of my column names (P7_X_COLUMN) and a text field where users input values for update (P7_X_UVALUE).
    My idea is that when they click the button, they update selected column to desired value in all rows.
    However, I get the following error:
    ORA-06550: line 5, column 5: PL/SQL: ORA-01747: invalid user.table.column, table.column, or column specification ORA-06550: line 4, column 1: PL/SQL: SQL Statement ignored (Go to error)
    It seems to me that I have not referenced the column name correctly, I thought it was the same as referencing values. How do I do that?
    This is my code:
    begin
    update "#OWNER#"."IZV_SLOG_DET"
    set :P7_X_COLUMN=:P7_X_UVALUE;
    end;
    Regards,
    Ivan

    I got it to work, but the query is too big. Can anyone help me with how to get it to work?
    I tried breaking it into more varchar2 strings, but i always get the same error:

  • How to add Javascript action to buttons and text (hyperlink style)

    Hello.
    Please need help urgently!
    I need to link let's say to a text in Muse that reads "ADD TO CART" following javascript:
    <a href="javascript:;" onclick="wazala_widget.addtocart('177217');"
    If i do it like:
    <a href="javascript:;" onclick="wazala_widget.addtocart('177217');">ADD TO CART</a>
    then text styling is different from the Muse Hyperlink settings  that chose for other hyperlinks on my site which is obviously an undesirable effect.
    If i try to style this specific ADD TO CART text within the html widget widnow:
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    body {text-align:center;}
    body {vertical-align:middle;}
    A:link { COLOR: white; TEXT-DECORATION: none; font-weight: normal; font-family: palatino; font-size: 12px }
    A:visited { COLOR: white; TEXT-DECORATION: none; font-weight: normal; font-family: palatino; font-size: 12px }
    A:active { COLOR: white; TEXT-DECORATION: none; font-weight: normal; font-family: palatino; font-size: 12px }
    A:hover { COLOR: white; TEXT-DECORATION: none; font-weight: normal; font-family: palatino; font-size: 12px }
    -->
    </style>
      <a href="javascript:;" onclick="wazala_widget.addtocart('177217');">ADD TO CART</a>
    Then it overrides Muse hyperlink settings for all hyperlinks located below this button on the page.
    Any help would be highly appreciated as this is the only thing that stops me from going live with my shop.

    Dis you ever get an answer to this?

    I have tried with a wired USB keyboard and mouse using a single screen. Powered up with option pressed. No change.

    Run the Apple hardware test to see what it tells you. Run the extended test when prompted, which can take awhile.

  • Complete action using popup and call button in text message

    I hate to have my first post a rant, but after my phone updated to jellybean (in which it didn't even ask if I wanted to update, which I find rude) there's two major annoyances I have.  One, the "complete action using" popup takes an extra click to get thru, there's no more check box, just two buttons asking for "all the time" or "just once".  Two, while writing a text message in landscape, there's now a "call" button right next to my back button.  It used to be some kind of info button, and if I missed click (which happens often) it would just bring up additional info.  Now, while I'm trying to go back to my list of text messages, I keep calling people.
    Is there any way to revert these back through some kind of settings?  Thanks for any info.
    P.S. The notifications bar is ugly now too, it's too drab in color, can I change that?

    No, you can't reverse the OS system update. Most of users with your phone model have been very impatient to get this update.

    With this dialog, you select the preferred option and then touch "all the time" to have that action always complete in that manner. You won't see the pop-up again for that particular action unless you clear the defaults.

  • Action Script 3 and button instances

    Surprise suprise, got the new CS3 Flash, but still has both
    earlier ***, nevertheless, I did something, don't know what, didn't
    mean to switch to AS3 (maybe), and somehow the stop actions don't
    work anymore. I still published in AS2 for Flash 8 as before, but
    it is still screwed up and I don't know how to fix this mess.
    I read about it, did my research, but because I am not a
    programmer, just a designer, I don't understand what you mean by
    events won't work on button instances anymore and to put action on
    a keyframe??
    I have several buttons in my movie, so how do I put them on a
    keyframe and where???? And how is this keyframe going to know which
    button it belongs to??
    Am I missing something?

    If your in a bind at the moment, I would suggest not
    attempting to learn AS3. The system is very different, good, but
    different, the syntax structure is much more strict and most things
    have been revised to use a listener/broadcaster (or event
    dispatcher) model, as well as most coding being class oriented,
    additionally the graphic display structure is quite different.
    Now did you change your publish settings back to AS2? If so,
    you should still be able to apply the above code to a button
    instance. However, as Dave stated, even in AS2 the code is best
    used from the timeline, to do so with the code above (which the on
    handler above is meant for Object attachment) you need to write it
    like this:
    my_btn.onPress = function() {
    _root.loadMovie("graphic_arts/graphic_arts.swf");
    I would also consider using a MovieClipLoader and the
    loadClip method forloading swf files, as it gives you more control
    over the load targeting, progress reporting, and event
    notifications.
    All this said, to use a button and load a file in AS3, you
    need to add an event listener to the button instance and construct
    a responding function to the event, in this case the loading of a
    swf file. Additionally, in AS3 the MovieClipLoader class, as well
    as the loadMovie methods have been replaced by the Loader classes
    and must be used to load swf files. So construct a button in AS3
    you must write something like the following:

    Hi guys,
    I've got an issue - When one of my buttons is rolled over, I want text and a movieclip to appear. When the button is no longer rolled over, I want the text and movieclip to disappear.
    The way that I was going to do this was to have anchor_mc as an anchor, and upon rollover have the movieclip play from inside the anchor (as its at the exact X & Y that its needed at) and dynamic text appear.
    Questions:
    1) How do I attach mc_textbox to mc_anchor --- OR, how do I set coordinate for just where mc_textbox should show?
    2) How do I then make the movieclip disappear if the button is no longer rolled over?
    3) Is it not possible for me to merge all of the dynamic text functions into one function, using IF statements? I tried this, but couldn't work it out.
    AS3 code is attached below.
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    stop();
    line1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in1, false, 0, true);
    line1.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in2, false, 0, true);
    line2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in3, false, 0, true);
    line3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line4.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in4, false, 0, true);
    line4.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line5.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in5, false, 0, true);
    line5.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line6.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in6, false, 0, true);
    line6.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line7.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in7, false, 0, true);
    line7.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line8.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in8, false, 0, true);
    line8.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    line9.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in9, false, 0, true);
    line9.addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    function line_in1(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "This is a test made by the MonkeyTest that has previously messed up\n        And testing a new line";
    function line_in2(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "up messed previously has that MonkeyTest the by made test a is This";
    function line_in3(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "This is a test made by the MonkeyTest that has previously messed up\n        And testing a new line";
    function line_in4(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "up messed previously has that MonkeyTest the by made test a is This";
    function line_in5(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "This is a test made by the MonkeyTest that has previously messed up\n        And testing a new line";
    function line_in6(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "up messed previously has that MonkeyTest the by made test a is This";
    function line_in7(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "This is a test made by the MonkeyTest that has previously messed up\n        And testing a new line";
    function line_in8(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "up messed previously has that MonkeyTest the by made test a is This";
    function line_in9(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "up messed previously has that MonkeyTest the by made test a is This";
    function line_out(e:MouseEvent):void
            line_output.text = "";
            var mc= new mc_empty(); addChild(mc);

    It isn't relly clear to me what you have versus what you want, so these answers may be equally unclear to you.
    1. One way to join them together is to maually place one inside the other while authoring the file.  Another way is to use addChild to add the text mc to the anchor...  mc_anchor.addChild(mc_textbox);  To control where the text mc appears you can set its x and y properties.using actionscript... mc_textbox.x = 0;
    2. To make the movieclip disappear you can set its visible property to false... mc_anchor.visible = false;
    3. You can probably reduce that code substantially, though it partly depends on what variations there are really going to be in the text that displays for each rollover.  For now, I'll assume the text will be entirely different for each...
    for(var i:uint=1; i<10; i++){
         this["line"+String(i)].addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OVER, line_in, false, 0, true);
         this["line"+String(i)].addEventListener(MouseEvent.ROLL_OUT, line_out, false, 0, true);
    function line_in(e:MouseEvent):void {
         var lineTarget:MovieClip = MovieClip(e:currentTarget);
          // could use a switch instead of the if's in series if you know what a switch is
         if(lineTarget == line1){
              // do things for line1
         } else if(lineTarget == line2){
              // do things for line2
         ) else if.... etc

  • Buttons and Action script 3

    I have purchased Flash CS3 and have created a small
    animation. I would like the user to press the button in order for
    the animation to play. With the previouse version of flash I would
    drag the button onto the stage open the action script window and
    start entering the script e.g. on(release){gotoandPlay(5);}
    However with the new version I cannot write scripts for the
    buttons.... I am confused or am I missing something? Please help me
    out.

    you're missing actionscript3. and if you don't care to learn
    and use it, just use the actionscript2 publish settings and use
    actionscript2 coding in your projects.

  • Using the same action sequence with multiple buttons and exclusive conditional interactions

    Hi all,
    first of all, pardon me for my english and if I post questions already answered, but I can't find anything about that.
    I'm new to flash and I decided to use Flash Catalyst to speed up the building process of a multimedia presentation for university.
    I have a menu with 10 buttons that change a text box on rollover (I converted it to a button label) and I need to reset the name of the current page on RollOut. Since the action sequence for it is the same of every button on one page, is there a faster way to apply the sequence than repeating it for every button? (I had to do it 10x10=100 times... and what if I made some mistake? )
    Another question is I want to disable the interaction of the menu button of the current page, but conditional interaction let me choose only an "if in state" condition an not a "if not in state". How can I do this? should I simply disable the button on that page?
    Thanks a lot for the help!
    Cheers from Italy

    I answered to myself by grouping buttons and disabling the button in his state.
    Thanks anyway!

  • Merging of actions for Submit and action button

    Hello,
    How to merge actions for submit and Commit operations, in a single button?.
    For clarity, I have made a form with ADF table, where user can edit table fields. containing Submit and Commit buttons. Once editing is completed, if submit is pressed, changes will be posted and commit button becomes enabled.
    Now i want to be both actions should happen in one button. How to do this?.
    Thanks in advance
    seshu

    You can drag an operation onto an existing button (bind to existing button).
    The commit operation will automatically submit the form as well.
    To make the commit button enabled clear the "disabled" property of the button.
