Warning! Documents, Desktop, Downloads and Trash spontaneously wiped!

Hi everyone.
The worst nightmare scenario just happened to me. My main folders (listed above) spontaneously deleted themselves! :-o
Fortunately I have a time machine backup which allowed me to recover everything but my Virtual Machines, but it is very disturbing that such a thing can happen.
I cannot identify what did the wiping, but here is the sequence of events:
Installed Microsoft Intellitype drivers 7.0
To complete installation, rebooted machine
When login screen appeared after reboot, accidentally hit Guest login. The computer then froze - presumably logging into Guest disrupted the installation process.
I then rebooted the machine, logged into my main user and discovered that Trash, Desktop, Documents and Downloads had all been deleted. :-o
Any ideas as to what could have caused this? I am running a Sophos scan to check for Trojans as I write this.

I did I thorough check on my disk - no problems are reported. It is striking that only these three folders seems to have been deleted, indicating that this was a software issue.
I ran a full Sophos malware scan and no malware was found.
I seem to be the only one with this issue, so I can put it down to one of those things - but it is a big concern though!
Let it be a reminder to all to backup files regularly!

  • History, Downloads and previous tabs wiped out upon re-boot

I have looked at all of the posts on this but none of the solutions proposed works. As long as I do not reboot my computer, the history and tabs are retained. As soon as I reboot, everything (downloads, tabs, history) gets wiped out. This just started a few days ago so the question is, what has changed? How do I figure out what has triggered this problem?

To my knowledge, Firefox doesn't do any different kind of clean-up when you restart your computer compared with when you close and restart Firefox in between Windows boots.
If the problem is limited to Windows restarts, I suspect that some external software might be involved. For example, software that cleans up personal data or software used to "sandbox" your browser so that it can't store settings directly on the hard drive. Do either of those sound like potential factors on your system?
Do you know what the IOBit Apps Toolbar extension is for? One description I saw in a search was some kind of adware. If that just showed up recently, it could be that some "free" software you installed includes unexpected or unwanted components and may be affecting Firefox. At a minimum I suggest disabling that extension here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
You might consider making additional backups of your settings folder. This would capture the last state of your history/bookmarks file (places.sqlite) and open tabs (sessionstore.js) so that if necessary you could restore them. Depending on what is clearing these files, you might need to store them externally (e.g., on a USB flash drive or in cloud storage). These might help:
    * [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/febe/ (for latest version, see the versions page: [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/febe/versions/]) (I haven't tried this add-on myself)

Even from Apple?  >  Java for OS X Lion Update 1
Restart your Mac before trying to download the file.
Do you have anti virus software installed or a program like LIttle Snitch?
If you are using Safari to download files, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that doesn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
If you still can't download the Java file, go to ~ / Library / Caches / com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash and restart your Mac. Try downloading that file again.
If it still won't download without that dialog, go to ~/Library/Safari. Move the Downloads.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
    Try again.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.
    <!-- VERY important to include-->
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>

  • Restore Download and Document Icons

I somehow deleted the Download and document icon from the dock and can't seem to restore it back. I have tried everything but, I have not figured it out. I know its probably simple. Please help!
    Steve

Drag the downlads folder from your home directory into the dock, between the trash icon and the separator bar. Hold it there for a few seconds and the dock will expand and make room for you to drop the folder there. You may have to move it around slightly to get it right between the trash and the separator icon. If it's over anything else on the dock besides being right between them then it wont recognize your effort to put something there and wont make room for you to drop the folder where you want it.

  • "Downloads" and "Documents" Stacks in the Dock  10.6 Snow Leopard

Is there a way to get the little blue folder icons that say "Downloads" and "Documents" to appear on the stacks in the dock instead of a thumbnail type icon of the first document or download in the stack? 10.6 Snow Leopard.  The Apple Web page describing "Stacks" as a new part of Snow Leopard shows them.

Yes, right click (control click) on the icon and select Display as Folder.

  • Arching of files is gone from the downloads and documents folder

The arching list of files is gone when rolling over the downloads and documents folder. I removed the downloads folder by accident yesterday from the dock. Once I found it, I replaced it back on the dock and now the arching of files is gone on both folders. I have them as lists by date. I have restarted my MacBook Pro several times, clicked on the dock and properties and nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how to get it back? Are there any settings that I am missing?. Thanks!

Right click on the folder in the Dock (or hold down the Control key and click on it if you have a one-button mouse), and choose "Stack" under the "Display as" section, and "Fan" under the "View content as" section in the resultant contextual menu. You can also choose how they are sorted from this menu as well.

  • A "genius" at an Apple store told me to delete the photos from my documents folder and trash them and I would still be able to keep them in iPhoto.  Now I cannot use the photos other than in the iPhoto file. Can this be undone?

How can I retreive deleted iPhotos which were deleted from the documents and trash files?  I stupidly did this because a "genius" from Apple Store assured me that I would still have access to the photos.

    Check iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to see if it's set to a referenced or managed library;
If it's set to a referenced library you photos are gone.
If that's the case they might be able to be recovered with a file recovery app like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage.  It will run in demo mode so you can see if it can recover your photos before having to purchase it. Use the iMac as little as possible till them so as not to overwrite them.
If it's set to a managed library launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and rebuild the library's databse file.
What verson of iPhoto and system are you running?

As for the version, when I open pages from my apps and click 'about' it says version 5.1? And when I open the document it just goes grey and kind of blinks and doesnt open? No error message or any indication of why it will not open now when I for sure have opened it in the past! Andddd for the OS X I think it is 10.9.1 ??

I have downloaded and installed the latest version of numbers on my mac. Everytime I save and then try to reopen that document, I receive a message telling me that I need a new version of numbers. Also, when I try to sort the date column, it sorts out of order. The last version sorted fine.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you install the new iWork version, the old iWork version is kept, so it looks like you are opening your old version.
To fix this, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and drag the new Numbers version to the Dock, so you can access to it quickly. Open all documents from this version. I don't recommend you to delete the old Numbers version in case you need it.
Respecting to the second question, you will get better answers in the Numbers for OS X forum

  • After upgrading to 3.6.8 our desktop will no longer connect to our DSL system. It downloaded and installed the upgrade then refused to connect. Help!

Background: our desktop computer started shutting off sporadically. I researched the problem, reset the memory chip, checked battery voltage on the motherboard (it was okay), resinserted the battery and tried to boot. It started up successfully and connected to the internet via our DSL line. FF had trouble opening pages due to security certificates so I checked to see if upgrades were available (3.6.8 was) and I downloaded and installed it. After that it refused to work. Apparently a setting somewhere got changed but I don't know what it might be. The DSL connection works with other computers which are wireless (the desktop has a hard connection.) Operating system is Windows XP. Other browsers do not work.

Turn off your firewall and antivirus software.
