WD SmartWare 1TB drive software won't launch

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not. I just purchased a WD My Book Essential 1TB external USB 2.0 drive to back up photos, music, etc. When I turn it on the drive mounts on my desktop (iMac G5 OS10.4.11 PPC) and the installation CD mounts. Everytime I click on the WD SmartWare icon to launch the installed I get "application WD SmartWare quit unexpectedly" The "DriveUnlock" does the same thing. I can transfer files to the hard drive and they all seem to be OK, but I don't want to take a chance and have them disappear at some point. I cannot eject the WD SmartWare install CD icon either. The drive icon will eject, but not the CD install icon. I had hoped to use the visual backup feature included with the drive, but can't seem to get anything off the CD!! Any suggestions? I would like to share this drive with my HP PC running Windows 7.

Telephone tech support at OWC, macsales.com, can help if you want to follow Kappy's great suggestion. Or, if you want to get one pretty much ready to go, and reasonably priced, have a look at these at OWC--and, unlike WD external drives, you should be able to clone and boot from any of them. OWC tech should also be able to help you set up separate partitions to use for the Mac and the PC. You want a 3.5" SATA drive.

    Windows 10 9926 (Upgrade from previous public beta, not fresh install)
    The soundcard software refuses to detect a valid Auzentech soundcard installed in my machine and thus refuses to operate/open. The drivers are installed without issue and work fine. I have tried the following to resolve the issue:
    1) Repair the software/driver installation. This process involves running the programs installer and choosing the "repair" option. This process involves a reboot after the repair is complete.
    2) Uninstall the drivers & software and reinstall it. This process involves a reboot after uninstalling but before re-installing.
    3) Uninstall the drivers & software via Device Manager, reboot the PC and then install the drivers.
    The driver software (Console Launcher) continues to refuse to operate because it can't detect a valid Auzentech soundcard even though the drivers install without issue. It was working fine before the upgrade to the January build of Windows 10.

    Figured it out, neither the official drivers nor the drivers provided by Youpax will properly work. You need to use the drivers provided by Daniel_k instead.

    Just got a new laptop with Windows 8.1 64-bit.  Trying to install my H470 mobile printer on this new pc and was able to download the HP Officejet full feature software and driver, but when I try to install the software, it won't get past step 1 of 8.

    I understand that you're not able to install your HP Officejet H470 Mobile Printer on your Windows 8.1 computer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. Now you mention that you're not able to get past step 1 of 8. This would appear to be a driver conflict. There may be a conflict occuring between a program on your Windows 8.1 computer and the print driver. Please follow the steps below to resolve this issue.
    Step 1: Uninstall Drivers:
    Even though the installation is failing, there is a chance that some software made its way onto your computer. To ensure that we have a nice clean slate to work with, please follow the steps below.
    Please disconnect your USB Cable.
    Open your Start screen, by clicking on the Windows button on the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen or by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left of your keyboard to the right of the Ctrl button
    Once the Start screen opens, type Programs and Features
    Click Programs and Features to launch it
    Once Programs and Features opens a list of programs installed on your computer will populate
    Scroll down the list of programs and look for your HP Officejet. Should you see your HP Officejet, select it and allow it to Uninstall.
    Follow any onscreen instructions to complete the uninstall process.
    Step 2: Clear the Temp Files:
    Open your Start screen again
    Type Run and click on Run to launch it
    In the Run box type %temp% and click OK
    When the Temp folder opens, select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard. Everything in this folder will now highlight.
    Select the 'delete' button on your keyboard. The Temp folder contains temporary internet files. No actual files or folders on your computer will be affected by deleting the temp files. Should a file in the Temp folder still be used, you will automatically get a pop up to 'skip' the item.
    Once the Temp files are deleted, please close the folder
    Right click the Recycling Bin on your desktop and select Empty Recycling Bin
    Step 3: MSCONFIG:
    There is a good chance that a program running in the background on your computer is causing the installation conflict. To resolve this conflict I am going to have you temporarily disable the background programs on your computer.
    A background programming running on your computer may be causing interference when trying to reinstall your wireless printer. To ensure that no programs are going to cause issues, I'm going to have you temporarily disable the background programs on your computer.
    Open your Start screen again by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left of your computer screen or by selecting the Windows button on the bottom left of your keyboard to the right of the Ctrl button.
    Once the Start screen opens type Run. Click Run to open it.
    In the Run box type msconfig and click on OK
    When the System Configuration Window opens select 'Selective Startup' and uncheck Load Startup Items
    Click the Services tab. Check the box at the bottom for Hide All Microsoft Services
    Select Disable All
    Select Apply and OK
    Restart your computer when prompted
    Step 4: Reinstall Drivers:
    When your computer comes back on, please click here to download the appropriate drivers for your printer
    Select the Download button on the top left
    When prompted, allow the download to Run
    Follow any onscreen prompts to reinstall your printer
    If using a USB Cable, do  not plug in the USB Cable until the installer prompts you to
    Once the installation is complete, please test printing.
    Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Should you encounter any further issues, please let me know exactly what step fails and what it is doing (installing driver, loading software, configuring product, etc). I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Installed WD My Book 1TB drive software, it killed my internet access

    MacBook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz with Leopard 10.5.1.
    I installed the "My Book RAID Manager" software included with the WD My Book Premium Edition II 1 TB dual drive system.
    Upon reboot, I can connect to my wireless router, but I can access no internet sites. This worked fine before.
    I can connect via afp:// to another computer on my network, though.
    when i opened terminal, i was getting the message that the following file was corrupt:
    /var/db/dyld/dyldshared_cacheppc
    i did some research and was able to to fix that with the command updatedyld_sharedcache -force, but my internet is not working.
    any ideas how to fix this?

  • Driver software won't start

    New Hp laptop w/Win8.1-64 bit software. Tried  download drivers (full) for Photosmart C4385 printer but, when click on software file,,it extracts and after a few mins, get a Runtime error message  the Setup.exe file, stating that "runtime is asking program to terminate inn unusual way."
    I have re-installed the old software for Win7-32bit many many times because it seemed to just disappear.  I cannot even get the software to start now.  I have tried many techniques, troubleshootig tips, wizards, etc without luck. So, any suggestions to get me past this roadblock?  Thanks  Robert

    What version of Mac OS are you using?
    Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
    Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

  • System Preferences & Software Update won't launch from Apple Menu

    I could really use some help with this, I've tried google searches etc and nothing has worked out.
    I recently upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 and then changed back to 10.4.11
    When it was installed (from a Universal retail not the DVD that came with the mac) I copied all the folders from "Previous System" and replaced the newly made ones.
    At some point I was using System Preferences when it vanished with the usual message "Closed unexpectedly, reopen, close etc". Since then neither System Preferences nor Software Update will launch from the apple menu. System Preferences will, however, open from the dock.
    When they are clicked on the hard drive makes some noise and then stops and nothing appears.
    Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    If so, let's try installing a QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard using a .dmg installer downloaded from the Apple website:

    I have Pages installed on my internal MBP drive, but I'm booted on an external drive running 10.8.2.     You should not be having this problem. I have a pre App Store version of iWork '09 and it is installed on my internal Snow Leopard system and on my external Mountain Lion system.
    I have never had a problem running it anywhere, but obviously if it is only installed on the non-boot-up drive you are going to have problems because it relies on files installed in the current System folder. It also sounds like you may have dragged it over and it has reverted to a demo version because you never registered it for the working system.

    Well without no information to work with, try reinstall.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
    2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
    A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
    If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
    If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
    If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

    I have tried reinstalling
    I have tried using the trick of deactivating another program, then resigning in.
    I even have tired the adobe cleaner tool.nks
    Any thoughts?

    The problems are caused by third party input managers/enhancers that have not yet been updated by their developers to comply with the standards used by Safari 3.2.1. and/or Safari 4.

    You fill find them in one or either of these folders:
    Home/Library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/library/Input Managers
    Hard Disk/Library/Application Support
    although the exact location is indicated in your crash report as quoted above - look under 'Binary Images'.
    Close Safari and delete them, then restart Safari and it should be working normally.
    Check with the developers of the plug-ins in question for updates that are Safari 4 compliant.
