Web application in Java

Hello all,
I need to develop a web application in java that will take MS excel files as input and generate output in excel format as well. Since I am not very experienced in java I am not sure what framework should I be using. Can I develop the user interface using JSwing and use servlets to make it available on web? Will appreciate any help.
Thanks.

You wouldn't need to use Swing. You could create your own Swing front-end (and access the web tier as a web service rather than a web app) but it wouldn't be necessary, and it would probably be too much work.
How is this even a web application? If you're going in with a desktop app file and coming out with a desktop app file -- why and how do you feel that the web even needs to get involved?

  • How to make web applications in JAVA

    Hi!
    Iam an experienced Web Programmer in languages like PHP,CGI,ASP but i haven't drunk my first cup of JAVA yet. My idea is to start making web applications in JAVA as soon as possible. But the first challenge i am facing is of choosing from things like J2SE,J2EE,J2ME. I just bought a book 'JAVA : The complete reference(J2SE 5.0)' by Herbert Schildt. It has a only a small percentage of text that looks like 'Web Programming' in the chapter 'java Servlets'. So now I think its J2EE that has all the web programming stuff. So basically iam confused and can't figure out what to read! So can anybody please tell me that what learning curve do i have to take to start java web programming? Remember, i hardly have any Java specific knowledge. But iam adept at OOPS programming(thanks to PHP).Do i have to learn that whole J2SE book if j2EE is what i need?And i don't really bother about syntax of JAVA language coz i have worked on C as well. Infact, PHP is much like C as well.
    Thanks for any Help

    I will once again clarify what i am sayin to avoid any confusion...
    PHP is an object oriented server side scripting language.
    PHP has its own semantics and OOPS defination. unlike ASP it is not dependent on other languages to execute the logic of script.
    PHP has it's own PARSER. The function list of PHP is also impressive. The OOPS are pretty strong, some things are missing like Function overloading etc.
    But PHP 5 has them too. (I use PHP 4.3.8). PHP runs on APACHE server or IIS with APACHE 2.0 PATCH. OOPS of PHP is very similar to JAVA(PHP also has $this-> operator). The main diffrence between PHP and JAVA or C/C++ is that variables are defined with $ sign.Actually they are never defined , they are created on fly. Array traverse functions of PHP make functions of other languages look primitive.
    You can go to http://php.net and make a search on available functions and features of PHP in the online manual.
    thanx.

    Did you deploy and target the jersey libraries to your server (these can (usually) be found in the ${WL_HOME}/common/deployable-libraries). Deploy these as shared libraries and then reference it by using the following in the weblogic.xml file:
    <library-ref>
        <library-name>jersey-bundle</library-name>
        <specification-version>1.1.1</specification-version>
        <implementation-version>1.1.5.1</implementation-version>
      </library-ref>
      <library-ref>
        <library-name>jsr311-api</library-name>
        <specification-version>1.1.1</specification-version>
        <implementation-version>1.1.1</implementation-version>
      </library-ref>
    Version can differ in your case (you have to check this when the libraries are deployed).

  • Web Application and Java Application

    Hello,
    I have a standalone Java application and a web application (JSP/Servlets) that I would like integrate. The standalone app. should send some information to my web app (which is not a problem), but then the user can be at this web app. for a while and then once he sees something he likes here, he can select it which should take him BACK to the standalone application. My question is whether something like this is possible?
    If so, then how do i do it.
    Also the web app and the standalone app run to 2 separate machines and 2 different JVM's.
    Any kind of help will be great.
    Thanks

    Well let me describe the scenario in detail
    We have a standalone java application that is good to search for data across an enterprise database. We also have another application which is web based and uses jsp's and servlets and is good for displaying data in different ways, let's say different kind of graps. Now the user will typically search for something using the standalone application and once he finds what he is looking for, then he might say that he wants to graph the selected data using this web application. Now this part is not too difficult as the standalone app can simply POST the selected information to the web app and the web app can then plot the graph. However, the tricky part is that this web application has the capability to allow the user to select let's say a bar and then get additional info. on that bar. Now to get this additional info. the web app. must contact the standalone app and tell it what bar was selected to get the additional info.
    so my concern is how does the web app contact the standalone app. or even KNOW about this web app. Also, RMI is pretty flaky and i would much rather use web services to accomplish it. If that is the only way to go that is.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to create reports from my existing web application on Java/J2EE with Oracle Client 10g as the backend?? Help sought for

    Our company has developed an  Web Application and we are also looking out for the development of reports using Business Objects Exterprise XI Release 2 and for this purporse I do require some help from the forum who can literally show me how to get on and working on creating the reports.

    Thats why I thought I should make the following chain in the keystore, possibly in this order.
    1. My private key (simply generated in the server)
    2. Import Root certificates from NS
    3. Import Trusted certificate issued by NS
    Then when I sign with my private key surely an association will be formed to the trusted authority certificate. The problem I'm having is when I first made my private key I used openSSL as it was only intended for HTTPS. Now I need to create a keystore so I can use jarsigner to sign the jar file, and I can't see how to create a keystore using my existing private key. Surely if I created a new key and self sign, then import the trusted certificate the association will fail, as the private key will not be the same 1 that I used to make the CSR when applying for the trusted certificate.

  • Handling multiple events in web application

    We are converting a window application to a web application. We are facing an issue while implementing the web application with Java on front end and Oracle DB in back end. Consider a field with a car registration number which needs to be verified if it exists in the DB and fetch the remaining values related to the car and display it. At the same time we also need to save the car registration number in the form (displayed in the browser) so that other operations (such as invoicing) can happen on the car. We have a constraint that we cannot touch any of the server procedures in the DB (which handles all DB calls) but could only play with the functions in the UI.
    Now the verification of the reg. no. happens whenever we go 'out of focus' from the text box where the reg.no. is written. However, if the user presses 'save' button to save the reg.no., verification should also occur and data should be saved. Now the problem we are facing is that on pressing the save button, two events are occurring simultaneously - 1. textbox with reg.no. is getting 'out of focus' and 2. save button is getting pressed resulting in verifying the reg.no. again. Due to this two events happening simultaneously, one or other method is failing leading to the car reg.no. not getting verified and saved as it should be.
    Could anyone think of any solution to overcome the issue?
    /Mayank

    Hi,
    Your assumptions are all correct. Indeed there is Javascript code executing on focus change and AJAX is doing the validations by inturn calling an oracle procedure through some Java rountine. The two requests are overlapping and hence blocking the complete execution of either, leading to the validation not taking place at all.
    The webpage gets refreshed everytime an event occurs and thus the next event can take place only after the page has refreshed once (after completing all the validations linked to that event). The problem is occuring since the page is not getting time to refresh. With simultaneous execution of 2 events, the validations related to 'Out of focus' remains incomplete before the 'save function' starts. I am constrained not to put the validation related to 'Out of Focus' in the beginning of 'save' event since that would alter functionality of the 'save' event. Again, I am not allowed to change any of the server procedures on the DB side and have to pass exactly the same i/o parameters for it to function properly.
    What I am trying to find is: Whether it is possible to find out (using some global variables) that when the 2 events are happening simultaneously, their functionalities could be combined and serialized in just one refresh of the webpage. and how?
    I am trying to get this project done by Java resources and am myself not very technical with Java. If a solution exists and I get to know it exists, I can guide the programmers to try out the approach that come up.
    Thanks so much :)

    hi
    This could be confusing without a more specific reference. Looks like it is about this:
    "Oracle XDK specified in weblogic-application.xml will cause JAX-WS to fail to deploy (7424247, 7436727)"
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/11/knownissues.html#wsd11
    "+If you create any ADF components ... any code deployed in that application will use the oracle xml parser rather than the default weblogic one ...+"

    This is an error that can be cause fore many reasons. There is a knowledgebase article about it. [ID 1332267.1] Most of the time it's because the jdbc connection in weblogic don't match exactly the db connections in the exp admin.cmd .
