Web page full of symbols when trying to play .mov files

If I try to stram .mov files I get just a new web page with symbols all over it.
Works fine though in firefox.
Any ideas on what may be wrong would be very helpful
Thx

Well it used to work fine so I think so. When I try and run the installer you linked to I get a message saying that a later version is already installed- isn't it built into the latest QT releases? One thing I thought of- the original files I think were made on a mac so there were some resource fork files of 4K size. I deleted these as I kept trying to open them by mistake, but then after this trouble I dragged them back out the trash to the original location but it didn't fix the problem- could that have caused some sort of association problem?

  • Quicktime error -2048 when trying to play.mov files.

I have been frustrated this weekend trying to find a solution to a problem that has only recently occurred accessing some digitised VCR tapes that had been archived on an external HDD. These are files that played back fine on my Quicksilver after I had recorded them, but now give a "Movie Not Available" message in Quicktime. However when opened in VLC I get a debug message box with the following information posted below. Any clues as to what might be the problem?
I recorded the files from my VCR using an ADVC-100 DA converter over firewire into BTV Pro which created .mov files (DV-PAL). When I try to open the files in BTV Pro, I get a message box "There was an error opening the movie. No Movie found. Error code 20,-2048" Did a search for this error and -2048 appears to be a Quicktime error, so am wondering if there is a problem with my installation of Quicktime. I have got all the usual suspects in stalled, Flip4Mac, Perian, VLC. Mpeg Streamclip but can't get the file to open. The external HDD is Mac formatted but I found some info about problems with missing resource forks in older .mov files causing problems if copied to NTFS HDD's.
Any ideas as to where to look next will be appreciated.

  • Quicktime crashes vista when trying to play .mov

    Hi all,
When trying to play .mov files with quicktime it instantly runs very slowly and then I get the blue screen of death and the system crashes. I can play the same .mov files in window media player, no problems. I was just wondering if anyone had found this and if there were any fixes. I have re installed quicktime which is the latest version. The Laptop has 3gb RAM a 2.4ghz Celeron and runs very fast with everything apart from quicktime. Its only a week old and has done this with quicktime from the start.
    Thanks

    Okay, let's go digging.
    1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
    2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
    3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
    The path will be:
    SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
    5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
*If you get a dialog at this point saying you don't have permission to open the file, try this:* OK out of the permission warning dialog. Right-click on the minidump file (In the "Open Crash Dump" screen), and select "Properties". Click the "Security" tab. Click the "Advanced" button. Click "Continue". Check the "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" checkbox, and click OK. Click Yes when the Windows security box comes up. Close the "properties" screens at this point, and go back to "Open Crash Dump", and try doubleclicking on the minidump again.
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash.
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your nine crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?

  • Broken Quicktime symbol when trying to play trailers and previews

Whenever I tried to play movie previews and trailers, a broken quicktime symbol would show up where the video would play and then nothing would happen. I uninstalled, and then reinstalled Quicktime and the same thing happens.
Does anyone have any ideas as to fix this problem?
Has this happened to anyone else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The windows firewall in windows XP SP2 could possibly cause this. Open the Windows Firewall control panel and click on the Exceptions button to see if QT is being blocked.
Also it could be permissions related. I recall with QT6.5 if the permissions were set to deny for QuickTime qtr and maybe the Temp folder in C:\Documents and Settings you would not be able to view a trailer at the Apple site.
I'm not sure what permission files in QT7 would affect the trailer site I haven't got into the nuts and bolts of QT7 yet.

it's not just videos from the "outside" - i'm having this issue with brand new material downloaded from itunes.  specifically, doctor who season 6 part 2 and futurama season 8.

I've gotten the error when trying to save a QT movie as source or as movie. To get the movie to be saved on disk, I reduce the number of characters in the filename (as if we're stuck using the old MS-DOS with "extended" filenames), and then try again. Shortening the filename usually works.
And if you look at the folder you tried to save the earlier files to, you'll see the filename you originally chose, with a file size of zero KB. Just delete those empty files. (I also superstitiously remove all spaces and punctuation marks in the filename, à la DOS, but have no idea if doing so makes any difference at all.)
The latest version of QuickTime Pro (7.1.5) still generates this error message when I try to save in QT (e.g., the teasers for "This American Life" on Showtime). My guess is that shortening the filename (one letter at a time, if you're scientifically bent) will get you to a filename that QT will be able to handle.

If I use the task master to close Firefox and then try to reopen it, I get a message saying that it is already open. Only restarting the computer will allow me to start it again.

do some working around, remove the old version, download the latest version from mozilla official, and do the new install, and install the addons. update problems are more than you can think over, so just do a new complete for sure. update sometimes is really time wasting......

  • White Screen When Trying to Play Movies / TV Shows Downloaded via AppleTV

Very frustrating, consistent issue with downloading movies or TV shows via AppleTV. Almost always results in a blank white screen with no sound and no video playing. No matter how many times I stop the video from playing, exit back out to the main menu, and restart the show, the white screen persists. The only thing that seems to fix it is to manually unplug the AppleTV, wait for 10+ sec, and then replug it in. Once AppleTV restarts, then I am able to watch the specific show I had been trying to watch. HOWEVER, the problem resurfaces as soon as I move onto the next movie or TV show.
Any suggestions on how to end this uber-annoying cycle?? I have all of the latest software downloaded. I have disconnected my iTunes library from AppleTV and then re-paired / re-synced the two (iTunes and AppleTV), and I have even tried resetting my AppleTV to factory settings (although given the volume of content I like to keep on my AppleTV, this leads to incredibly long timeframes to re-sync my AppleTV with my iTunes library). Any thoughts / suggestions / miracles would be hugely appreciated. THANKS!!!

    Hi
Can't help you I am afraid, but I can tell you that you are not alone. Keep having exactly the same problem. Rented a Movie this evening and had to pull the plug half way through the download to be able to start and watch it.
I do have the Apple TV connected through a HDMI switch and wondered if it may be copy protection HDCP or something so was going to try it on component when I find my set of cables.
Will let you know the outcome

  • ITunes 9 freezes when trying to play movie

    G'Day Experts !
Was wondering if anyone can tell me why iTunes 9.03.15 (the latest software) freezes up on WinXP SP3
Have looked through the knowledge base, have done the reinstalls, created a new Apple account, disabled antivirus... nada.
This is on a new hard disc and a new system that has not run iTunes before. Have never seen this problem.
    Thanks!
    Rob

    Itunes 9.03.15
itunes freezes when I play a movie/tvshow. I have to "end task" then re-start Itunes. The movie doesn't play at all. This happened after I downloaded two movies for rental and tried to move them to an older model Ipod video 30GB. The move didn't work so I tried to synch the ipod with no success. Gave up trying to move the movie and tried to watch it on my computer screen and it does not play. This is irrating because now my movie is going to expire in a few hours and I haven't been able to watch it.

  • Rhythmbox - error when trying to play a file

    Hi,
I installed rhythmbox lately, when i try to play a mp3 i get the following error:

I have installed alsa with wiki (works perfectly), including these lines in /etc/devfsd.conf:

Yes, i did a search in the forum......
Saw that it is probably a gstreamer problem. Ran gstreamer-properties.
    It says: defaultsink:
    output: ESD Enlightenment Sound Daemon
    pipeline: osssink
When i click on test it says:
Failed to construct test pipeline for 'ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture'
I do not have the complete gnome installed, i use XFCE
    Anyone got any suggestions?
    gr

DIdn't work for me, though.. :-(
I have the same problems. Playing through totem (through xine) works fine.
I use alsasink in gstreamer-properties and have snd-pcm-oss build into the kernel (no module).
I've followed the directions from the wiki but I use udev. But I've set permissions accordingly. Since xine can play audio, I guess for this part everything is okay.
I don't get it - this is not my first alsa installation. :-)
Just tried pacman -S gstreamer but no change..

This is a user to user forum. If you know it is a Quicktime bug, you should report this using the Feedback link (which will get seen by Apple personnel).
I said I knew for certain that it's NOT corrupted files (because they work fine everywhere else, other programs, my synth, etc.), and I'm only assuming it's a QT bug, because that's what I'm assuming plays them, and the error window shows the QT logo, and says it's a "movie that can't be opened"!
And I just now sent feedback to Apple, thanks for the link...
I already said I don't use midi files: so what application should open them? Or do you think it is just QT getting the file type wrong?
What has happened between them opening OK and the problem? What else has been installed?
Yes QT is getting the file type wrong, and QT is what I have set to play them, and it does, 70% of the time, no idea why some just won't play...
The only new thing are the newest updates, as they come down the pike, I don't remember exactly when this began, but it was fairly recently. It could be tied to the QT update...
