WebServer Hangs?  Or can't find on browser ...  PowerBook (PowerPC) Tiger

I have a PowerBook (PowerPC) and Tiger OS X. Recently developed tons of HTML but I can't seem to view in on a WebServer because it will not turn on. If I go to Systems -> Sharing, and try to turn on Web Services, that check box goes gray and it just says "starting." That's it. I tried re-installing Apache. I tried reading all the conf files but I can't figure it out.
I tried updating the Apache version, tried installing a newer package with the PHP, mySQL though it already comes with the older version but I think I made a mess of it. Really could need some assistance, please!!!

Just to add on to what Camelot said, usually Apache isn't really hanging when you start it with System Preferences. The System Preferences pane is waiting for Apache to signal that it's finished starting up, but what's really happened is that the Apache binary has crashed or exited with a configuration error, and the System Pref pane never gets the message. That's why it appears to hang, but if you close and open Sys Prefs, you'll see that it's no longer waiting to start.
Apache logs its errors in /var/log/httpd/error_log, and it's usually very helpful about telling you what happened. There are also helpful command line programs to get you information on why Apache won't start up. You can check your configuration like so:
<pre class="command">/usr/sbin/apachectl configtest</pre>
You can start the server like so:
<pre class="command">sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl start</pre>
Substitute stop for start to stop sharing, and use graceful instead of stop if all you want to do is to restart the server to make some configuration changes. graceful won't make your server unavailable like stopping and starting will.
These hints, though, all apply to the Apache 1.3 that's shipped with 10.4, and may not apply if you've replaced the stock Apache and PHP and other stuff...

    Can't find media browser
Click the button towards the bottom right corner with the icon of a musical note, a bit a film, and I guess a photo.
How do import songs from iTunes?
You can drag a song from the iTunes window into the GB timeline, or drag the file from Finder into the GB timeline, however:

This happened to me also (I'm using Windows XP though). It's because Forte doesn't know how to communicate with Explorer through DDE (at least on some peoples' systems). You can tell Forte to launch the browser through the command line, and that should work. To do this, go to Tools, Options, IDE Configuration, System, System Settings and choose External Browser (Command Line) from the dropdown. Then go to IDE Configuration, Server and External Tools, Web Browsers, External Browser (Command Line) and under Browser Executable write C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe URL (of course, use the appropriate path to iexplore.exe if it's not the one above). Or, you could just select Forte's internal Swing-based browser under System Settings, but it doesn't have as many features as Internet Explorer.

I have just successfully installed Lion and when setting the toolbar in Mail I noticed that there isn't an icon for 'photo browser or attachments? Has the big cat eaten them or is there a more cunning method to attach photos to emails?

    drag. drop. :-)
you can customize the toolbar with many more options, just right click the toolbar and select "Customize toolbar"

  • Cannot find destination drive - Powerbook G4, Tiger

Hello... oddball problem here I think.
My powerbook is about 4 years old now. Was running fine on Sunday, Monday when I tried to start it up I got the "broken folder" icon. i.e. Kernel Panic as far as I can tell.
    I've:
    -Reset PRAM
-did extended hardware test (no issues)
-repaired and verified the disk (via TDM)
-did a 7pass '0 out' erase of OS partiton (via TDM)
-did a quick erase and rename of OS partition (via TDM)
-repaired and verified the disk (again) (via TDM)
I can access the HD via firewire in TDM, can transfer data off it no problem. When trying to use Disk Utility from the OS startup disk, it freezes up. When trying to reinstall the OS it cannot find a destination disk..
so.. Is the HD dead? or am I missing something?

Well, maybe you did have a KP which may be hardware related. I take it the gray disc is the one that came with the computer originally? I am not that familiar with your model computer but the disc probably had a hardware test utility on it that can be accessed by holding down the D key while booting. Check the hardware.
There's a list of other things that can be tried such as resetting PRAM (can't see how that would necessarily help here, but it can't hurt) and PMU.
In one sentence you said it freezes on booting, but then you also said it froze while using disk utility which suggests it did indeed boot to the disc, so I'm a bit unclear as to the exact status.

  • Can't find printer in print browser

Somehow my printer disappeared from the print browser. I have a ibook G4 laptop running OSX 4.11, that is connected to my desktop via a router. Last night I could not print from it (the desktop printing is working just fine). I tried the printer setup utility and no printers are listed nor are any printers found. I downloaded a print driver but can't find it when I do a search using the print browser and am not sure where to look to find it .
I also tried to add the IP manually (am sure this wasn't the original setup) and using localhost:631 (on the desktop) > manage printers, but the device URI shows up as file://dev/null.
My desktop is a powermac G4 running 10.5.7, the printer is an HP deskjet 5650. All worked great until last night.
I've tried everything I can think of and would appreciate any guidance.
    Thanks,

Hmmm, something is wrong I suspect.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

I have an Apple Airport Extreme and it has been working well for a long time. My husband and I both run our internet connections from it wirelessly. Recently, when we go to connect to the internet, the browser says 'Can't find Server' but the Airport status bar says we are fully connected to the internet with a strong signal. I have no idea what happened or what is going on. The only thing that we have done differently is update the firmware on both our computers, and it seems as if this problem has started around that time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    April

It might be a good time to perform a complete power recycle of your network components to make sure they are "talking" to each other properly and see if this resolves the problem.
    Please try the following:
o Power-down the modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), and computer(s); wait at least 15 minutes. Order is not critical.
o Power-on the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Plug-in the AEBS; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s).
Can they access the Internet now?

  • Since updating to 3.6.1 I don't get an empty browser window in my tool bar whe. it opens --- just a list of search engines. I can't find anything in "Help" or the FAQ's that seem to address this. My only choice seems to go back to Safari.

I am not sure what your problem is, can you give more details.
One possibility is you may be in full screen mode, for details on fixing that see the [[menu bar is missing]] article.
If you are missing various toolbar items, see the [[back and forward or other toolbar items are missing]] article.
If your problem is something else please give more details.

  • Apple loop index is empty folder!!! Can not find loop in logic browser because they just no longer exist on my hard drive, what would be the new appropriate step to take?

Apple loop index folder is empty from the hard drive, which may explain why i can not find loop in my logic pro browser, just sort of grey in disaabled format. what would be the next appropriate steps to take??? I do have an external back up disk.

The IDE interface that the iBook and your desktop use are the same, just a different plug size. So with the rite adapter you could put the iBooks drive in your desktop, you could even boot off it too.
If you want to install the laptops HD in your desktop this will do it for you. Or you can use the iBooks HD as an external hard drive with this

  • I want to change the file location for the automatic backup file bookmarks.file, but I can't find browser.bookmarks.file in the list on the about:config page.

I asked about automatic backup of bookmarks and received the following answer:You can make Firefox 3 create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when you exit Firefox if you set the pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML] to true on the about:config page. That backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html, but you can set the file name and path via the pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.bookmarks.file browser.bookmarks.file] on the about:config page. I went to about:config page and toggled browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to “Yes” and it’s working. However, I want to change the file location, but I can’t find browser.bookmarks.file in the list.

The browser.bookmarks.file preference does not exist by default. Right-click in about:config and select "New > String" to create it.

You can delete cookies in Safari preferences, and it helps for sure. They say, the problem comes back later, and you have to do it again... I guess until they come up with a patch for Safari.
