Wedding client proofing

Hi all,
I wanted to get an idea what is a generally accepted way of creating jpg images for clients.  Particularly the average wedding clients who I give a CD and they will view it on their monitor.
After I finish editing in lightroom I do the final export of my DNG images to jpg and then I do one last look at the final images. JPG, 90%, 10MP, and sRGB, sharpen monitor standard.
When I look at the images I was using the default Windows Photo Viewer because I figure that's what the average person would use to view the images.  Windows Photo Viewer renders images awfully!!  You can tell it is very compressed because my images look grainer than they did in lightroom.
So I tried switching to Microsoft Office Photo viewer and I realized that they were rendering it in a different color profile (it looks more red and saturated).
I finally switched to Irfran Viewer becuase you can choose the color profile you view the images.  By choosing AdobeRGB (which is close to my monitor profile), I was able to view the images almost identically to what lightroom had before export.
This is very frustrating.  I experimented with Lightrooms Soft Proof but that didn't really seem to provide insight.
So my final question is, how to people typically export pictures and proof for normal clients?   Is the way I am doing it OK?
I understand the client will most likely not have their monitor calibrated and the correct profile in place, but years down the road when calibration because more standardized, I still want my pictures to look they way I had intended them!

I suppose that was what I was asking.  So just because I export it as sRGB doesn't mean the client will view the jpg file and translate it as sRGB or the same color profile that I want them to view it.
I guess I was thinking that the sRGB carried with the file and told whatever program that was opening it whatever color space it was.
Thanks.
To gain more control over how your clients view the images why not use LR's slideshow module and export to PDF. If they don't have Adobe Reader it's simple enough to download and install it. Reader is color managed so the only variable is the customer's display adjustments.
I also agree with Geoff concerning use of 10Mp images for client review. I'd use PDF export to no larger than 1600 x 1200, which is ~2Mp.

  • Online Galleries with Client Proofing

Currently when I post photographs from a client shoot to Zenfolio or Smugmug, my clients say things like "I like 22, 34, 25, 26, and 27" or "I like the third one down and fourth one to the left on the third page" and while it's helpful to be integrated with these sites, it's not exactly elegant.
On the surface, what I would like to see is a way to upload a shoot from Lightroom to a location where my clients can make their picks, and those pics are either "flagged", "tagged" or put into a collection in Lightroom, enabling a seamless roundtrip from proofing to production.
This would entail advanced integration with sites like Zenfolio or Smugmug, or the production of a new photo sharing/proofing site developed by Adobe and integrated into Lightroom workflow.
I know, I don't ask for much, right?
Thanks for an amazing product, Adobe Lightroom team!

  • Using PDFs for client proofs

As a graphic artist, I need to send proofs to my clients.
I start with Illustrator files (which also use some Photoshop bitmaps) and send PDF proofs to clients. However, when I send these proofs, I see now that the client can still pull out my vector art if he opens them in Illustrator.
I tried turning off the check box that reads, "Create PDF Compatible File" when I first save the file. I also make sure I save my PDFs as "Smallest" File Size," and make sure the "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" box is unchecked. But when I open the PDF proof in Illustrator, the file has one layer but many, many selectable vectors.
Is there a way to protect my art from theft and at the same time let the client review a PDF proof?

    Thanks Aandi and graffiti,
Yes, contractually is ideal and I am covered on that account. But once a client is tempted to grab those graphics and reuse them without sending me new business it is unpleasant to enforce without making them a little grumpy. I guess either way I will loose business. Its kind of like locks on doors, they only keep honest people honest.
Exporting to bitmap was the way I was going to go but the PDF preview is nicer to inspect the fine print when zooming in if it remains mostly vector.
Oh well, its a rough world out there. I just wanted to check and see if there was a better solution to this dilemma.
    Thanks.

  • Wedding Photography Proofing Gallery

I have roughly 1,000 images from a wedding. DVD studio pro has a menu that is perfect for showing 6 images at a time. When you click on 1 image it opens and displays a larger version of the image with the file number attached. This would be great for proofing weddings, however I want to find a way to automate the task. Currently I would have to drag and drop one image at a time on to the node in the menu.
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this?
    Thanks
    Eric

Your best bet is using Photoshop or iPhoto to make proofing PDFs or webpages to post or someone can view on the computer
When you click on 1 image it opens and displays a larger version of the image with the file number attached
How are you are getting what you are seeing with the larger image and name showing up when you click on a button? Or are you asking if it can be done?
It could be done via programming by writing out file descriptions for the menus and tracks, or other things in the project (if you export an item description from DVD SP you can see some of the XML structures the write a program, Apple Script etc by running through the files in the directory with the images), but I would tend to use the other things I mentioned for proofers.

  • How to give raw footage shot in AVCHD to wedding clients?

I’ve been living in AVCHD **** for the past couple weeks.  I just recently upgraded my old Sony PD-170s to new Panasonic AG-AC90s which record in AVCHD.  I mostly shoot weddings and deliver the raw footage directly to my clients.  When I was shooting DV, I just gave them the tapes and was done.  Now, I’m completely stressed out because I’ve been trying to figure out how to give my clients their footage without worrying if they’ll be able to play it back on their computer without any problems.  I’m particularly worried since I’m on a late 2008 Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8GB of RAM and the files won’t play back smoothly for me.  I need to be able to deliver the footage so that it will play back smoothly on both Mac and PC, even if they’re not as powerful as my own computer.
I went to the Apple Store and they recommended I get a new SSD and a new battery for my laptop.  I’m waiting on both and we’ll see if they make any difference.  They told me I could use Compressor to convert the files to a more compatible format, but I tried that and it took nearly half an hour to convert a one-minute clip to 720p.
I’ve thought about just burning all their footage to blue-ray so they can watch it on their HDTV, but that would mean buying a blue-ray burner and having no idea how long that whole process would take on my outdated MBP.  If I had any luck going that route, maybe I could just give them the AVCHD files on an external hard drive and disclose to them that their computer may not be able to handle playback.  At least they could give the drive to a professional editor who would know what to do with it.
I feel like I’m in way over my head.  I don’t have the money to buy a new computer right now, but if I have to take out a loan so as to not wind up with unhappy clients, I will.  I just have no idea how much of an investment I would need to make to be able to do the transcoding in a reasonable amount of time.  The “genius” at the Apple Store didn’t have any great advice other than to tell me to use Compressor.  I really need to figure out how to do this in the most efficient and economical way possible.  I’m broke, I’ve been living with my parents and I’m just trying to get back on my feet after the worst year of my life in 2013.
I’ve spent many hours over the past two weeks researching these issues, reading articles, posting on various message boards and still not feeling like I’m close to any real solution.  Any help would be a tremendous blessing.

If you are giving the clients the raw footage it's best I think to give them the entire media structure from the camera card. Just make a separate folder for each card, call them Joe&Joan1, 2, 3, etc. Drag the complete contents of each card into it's separate folder. Put the folders on an ExFAT formatted jump drive.
That's the down and dirty method, but it depends what the client wants to do with the video, just watch it on the TV or maybe do something with it themselves. If the latter, then the way I described above is probably the safest for giving them the most options on how to deal with it. If they just want to view, most recent systems can play back raw .mts files in H.264, but the client will have to dig it out of the folder structure to find it.

  • Interactive Wedding Albums

I would like to clarify if it is OK to create an iBook photo/video album for potential wedding clients? I would give them the ibooks file ( via dvd or dropbox ) as a complimentary gift but I would also include my design rate for the time it took to create the iBook. Is this permitted?
And, if so could I promote this service as a "iBook weddings album" on my website without going through iBookstore? Or, does anyone have a workflow that honors Apples product and service without posting a clients personal business to the world via iBookstore?
    Thanks for any insight!

From the iBooks Author: Publishing and distribution FAQ:
If a fee is charged for the work and it is in the .ibooks format, the work may only be sold through the iBookstore. If the work is in a different format, such as PDF or ePub, this restriction does not apply.
You cannot charge a fee for the book if you distribute it outside the iBookstore without being in violation of the IBA license.
The question is whether giving the iBooks file away as a "complimentary gift" while charging at your "design rate for the time it took to create the iBook" would be considered as having sold a book that you are not distributing through the iBookstore.
Using common sense, I doubt that Apple would object to this, seeing that a wedding book is of interest to only a very limited audience. Unfortuntely, common sense doesn't apply. What applies instead are the the license terms.
I would take the IBA EULA to a lawyer and get an opinion, if you want to be on the safe side. Pragmatically, the cost of prosecuting you for a license violation will cost Apple far more than all the revenue you will ever make from wedding albums. But that hasn't stopped some organizations, such as RIAA, from prosecuting similar breaches. If you happen to be the unfortunate one Apple decide to make an example of, you might regret it…
    Michi.

  • Book Choices

As Aperture is supposed to be pro quality I wonder why there is only two book sizes? And more over American book sizes, curiously not everyone in the world is from America.
I work at a school and one of the parents was promoting his photography business and the standard of the books he was displaying were breath taking. From small A5 books right up to practically A3 size, in wonderful thick various textured papers, in gloss and matt and also metal bound books etc. They make the apple ones look like pants.
Will apple be providing a lot more choice in books in the future, after all Aperture is supposed to be seeing us from start to finish. I don't mind paying more if the choice is there.
I would go elsewhere to get my exported book printed, but no one in the UK wants to deal with American book sizes....

    I agree with you.
Size of book is important as is quality.
I received my first book from the Apple service two days ago. I was considering using the service for my weddings this year. I opened the box and was greeted by a poor quality product:
-The front image is stuck on at an angle and was already peeling off!
    -the book is poorly bound
    -the paper is too thin
    -the print has banding(!)
-the cover material ***** (gets dirty from touching it and cannot be wiped clean)
-the size is too small (minor gripe since I new this when ordering).
So all in all there is no way on earth that I would sell this product to anyone. I want my products to represent me - and this would make me look cheap, tacky and badly put together. The product could last a few (yes a few = 3!) years if handled carefully. Wedding clients and any client for that matter want a product to last a lifetime.
Come on Apple, you're making a 'professional product' here. That means that you need to give us users a choice. We need to be able to change size and select paper type. Moreover, the functionality is much needed to be able to design books in Aperture with pages of any size (with bleeds) and export as PSD, JPEG or TIFF (with colour profile). PDF is in my opinion useless for this purpose. By the way please sort this out too - can you allow a PDF proof to be printed in the order of a few MB's, rather than TENS of MB's? This would be useful to send the proof to the customer.
A £30 book really doesn't cut it. We need the ability to select our own supplier and export the layout to send to them.
Gary, I would suggest that you try sim2000imaging.com. They offer vastly superior quality books and can design it for you. They do cost more, but there is an array of sizes and materials with THICK paper and properly put together.
Apple books are fit for purpose, but that purpose is NOT for the professional to sell to a customer. For personal use they are fine and for the money they ok.
I NEED a product (Aperture) to allow me to design products (books) to be able to sell to customers. PLEASE, PLEASE Apple, can you redesign the book layout utility to allow us all to do the above?

  • LRCC Face recognition - best practices?

Ok so we are all new to the wonderful world of face recognition in LR.  I'm trying to work out what would be the best practices for using this.
A little bit of background - I have a catalog of over 200,000 images.  In addition to portrait and wedding clients, a significant part of my work is with models and another significant part of my work is theatre photography.  I have be wanting some sort of face recognition to help with both for some time.
What are your namining conventions for people? - here's mine:
Ideally I would label people as "surname, firstname" so that I can keep members of a family together in "named people" display, but commas are not allowed in names.  Also the professional name of many models doesn't fit that pattern eg "Strawberry Venom" or "Cute as Sin" are to models I have worked with.
I am trying to come up with a sensible naming convention at the moment it is "Surname/ Firstname" for clients, theatre folk and friends/family.  Models are still a problem, at present I am thinking of "Surname/ Firstname (model name(s))"  While I may not be able to remember the real names of models, I do usually know the names from model releases.  This naming will still permit me to filter/find them in the keyword List panel by just entering the model name.
On final addition I am making to this this naming convention is the use of a hashtag suffix to the name:  #F for friends and family, #C for clients, #T for theatre/actors and #M for models.  This enables me to filter on just models, or just actors, or just friends and familiy.  Where people fall into multiple categories I add multiple hashtags.  So photos of me would be keyworded with "Butterfield/ Ian #F #T"
    Unknown / unidentified people.
What I am not yet certain about is how to handle unknown / unidentified people.  Unidentified people fall into a number of different categories.
People I don't know and I am never likely to know (Eg random strangers on the street, local tour guides on holiday, random people in the background etc)
This group is relatively easy to deal with - that is to simply delete the face recognition, End of story.
People I don't know the names of yet but I am likely to find out (Eg actors in a production for which I don't have a programme)
For these people I am making up a unique name using the format "date/ Context-Gendernn" Eg an unknown male actor at Stockport Garrick Theatre would be named as "20150313/ SGT-M01"  Although this may appear a complex solution it has a number of advantages.  If/when I do learn the name of the individual (Eg I photograph them in a different production) it is simply a case of renaming the people keyword.  Creating a unique name and not simple assigning all unknowns to a bucket name will help the face recognition algorithms find this person without it being confused by have different faces assigned to the same name. I am also using the hashtage #U to make it easier to filter the unknown faces when I need to.
People I don't know the names of and there is only a slim possibility of meeting/photographing again (Eg guests as a client weeding)
It feels as though I out to just delete the face recognition and have done with it, and this is what I would do except for thing. Other than manually drawing face regions I have not yet found a way to get lightroom to rescan a folder for faces if you have previously deleted the face recognition.  This means that deleting face regions from a large number of people is something that cannot be easily reversed.  I might just leave these people in the "Unnamed People" category... at lease until such time as there is a way to rescan a folder or colectoin.
    Summary
My practices are still evolving. But I hope these thoughts and idea will help others think through the issues and come up with solutions that work for their situation.  I am interested in hearing how other people are using the face recognition system.  Especially if anyone is aware of any 'best practices' that Adobe or anyone else has recommended.

    Glad it helped.
Yes and no.  You can still put the people keywords into hierarchies within the keyword list - you can arrange them just like any other keywords.so you just create a "smith family" keyword and store "john smith" under it.  What you can't do is apply BOTH smith family and john smith the the same face.
My use of the hash tags came about because I initially had a top level keyword for models, one for clients, one for theatre peple and one for family and firends.  Then discovered that some of the theatre folk were also clients (headshots) and what to do when a friend is also a client.  So the hash tag system means a person can be both a friend, a model, an actor as well as being a client!  (#T #C #M #F).

  • Many Sporadic Preview Related Issues

Not sure if this is where to post/report Lightroom 5 issues or not, but here are preview-related issues I am experiencing...
    Preview panel "preview" freezes indefinitely.
App very slow to load while creating new previews. (previews take forever to create and update)
Wrong previews showing for wrong images when swapping between folders, etc. (ie: all photos, last import, custom collections)
This one is a little different...
Ratings lost when switching between folders, etc. (ie: all photos, last import, custom collections)
This was a clean install that ran beautifully at first. Started noticing this more and more after using the spot tool. (my last step in processing a job)
I use separate catalogs per job. Some as small as a few dozen images. (family stuff) Others, as large as 500-600. (engagement and wedding clients)
Hope you are working on this. It's making work a struggle. I'm not just a "consumer". ;-)

  • Can the find feature in Aperture do this?

I have a list of 200 image numbers (same as Version Name)from a wedding client.
This list is a Word doc.
I will be using these choices to design a book.
Can I copy and paste this Word doc. list into Aperture so it can gather those specific photos. I have been trying to do this with no luck.

  • How can I get Adobe Media Gallery for Bridge CS3

I want to create an online photo gallery for 3rd party client proofing. I am using a reference book byScott Kelby (the editor of 'Photshop User' magazine) and he refers to Adobe Media Gallery: ( Bridge CS3 / Windows / Workspace / Adobe Media Gallery).
He states that although AMG wasn't initially shipped with CS3, Adobe released a free update for bridge and once installed it is possible to download AMG from labs.adobe.com.
I am unable to find any reference to AMG or any download/upgrades
    (Windows XP/ Bridge 2.1.1.9/ Ps CS3 Extended 10.0.1)

    Good day Geoff,
You can download the Adobe Reader 10.0.0 installer .EXE file from here:
    ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.0.0/en_US/AdbeRdr1000_en_US.exe
Once you've downloaded it, you can burn it to a disc or copy it to a thumbdrive to bring to the PC that's offline.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
    Kind regards,

  • Color Display for PDF Files Creative Cloud in Browser View

I have noticed that there is a great difference in color display between a PDF and .ai/eps files. When viewed in the browser there seems to be no ICC taking affect for PDF files even though options to include the profiles, etc in output were selected. This makes it hard to use as a tool when showing clients proofs via the browser as they will never see proper color. I know color will vary between monitors but the difference is huge for some colors. Like a dark almost Navy Blue appearing like a vibrant pen ink blue. On a Mac when you use the quick spacebar preview the correct color shows for all versions of file type but in the browsers it shows the color incorrectly. Have tried this so far on the Mac in in Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Even Google Drive can display all the file types correctly with correct color although the way it shows eps files is a bit off. That I don't mind as I rarely save eps files anymore.
Is there something I am missing or is this a defect in the browser display?
The other possible option would be to flip my thinking and save everything as .ai files with PDF compatibility turned on and then have to tell clients that they should be able to open that ai file in Acrobat. At the moment I save everything as PDF files with Illustrator compatibility turned on.

Can anyone throw light on this. I'm facing same problem.

  • Crappy Banding in images still evident in ilife 11...

I thought Apple this time round would solve the issue of banding and poor image quality in some areas of images imported into imovie for photo slideshow movies. Well that hasn't happened and frankly it *****. Why pay the money to upgrade when I get these crappy looking images in my slideshows from a perfectly normal original JPEG file. This happened in imovie 09, yet imovie HD (06) is bang on perfect. I don't get it. It can't be that hard to fix. For my presentations to my wedding clients I cannot show them a slideshow that displays images with severe banding and degradation in areas of some images.
Does anybody know a workaround? I've tried a iphoto slideshow exported and that is not much better. This ***!

in this demo, I made a year ago, banding comes simply by to high compressed JPEGs!
I made a few tests... a jpg, which looks marvelous on computer, makes the video-enoder stumble = banding.
plus (although I do avoid to participate in 'quality' discussions): you havent' told us the whole workflow... 'wrong' export settings amplify such compressions-losses ... wrong 'settings' on playback too .. (simple example: do your monitor settings match the mov-resolution? or do you scale on playback?) ...

  • Need help placing image behind design

I am currently designing a DVD case for a wedding client. I have everything on it completed, except that I cannot send the picture behind the design, so that it is only visible through the circular opening.
I've tried rearranging layers, changing visibility, everything.
This unfortunately won't let me attach a screen grab of the photoshop window, hopefully my description is clear. Thanks so much in advance!

    Hi Amunzphotography,
Unfortunately I am not sure what is the problem here. If you are rearranging the layers that should do the trick.
Could you take a look at this document, it explains how to share screenshots on the forums.

  • Merge data creating duplicate listings

I have a csv database with about 580 records. I've created a template with the correct fields in inDesign, loaded the csv file using merge data, then created the merged document. I get 580 listings of one item like the image below. If there is an errant symbol in the csv database causing this, it doesn't reflect in an error in a preview. In fact, all 580 records can be previewed, copied and pasted into another document and displayed error-free. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Depends on the document. ISSUU - 2015 Kayak Gear Guide by Wild Coast Publishing. This went live unpublished for client proofing requiring two separate sessions, so three reflows of the database. If it worked properly, the clients submit the revised spreadsheets that are dropped into a database. The revised database is then loaded into inDesign. If the update worked as it should, it wouldn't require a single extra piece of work in the inDesign document. It would be: import client spreadsheet into the database, export the database into csv file, update csv into inDesign and update the fields. Five minutes. Now look at that document and you have 60 of 604 records to change and it can't be automated. You're telling me it's no deal reflow that document and build it from scratch again? I don't think so. The problem is this would be SO easy to work properly. Some initial finessing of the headings and bam, done for the year. We could take client updates and reflow it live online in minutes of effort. It should work properly. I paid Adobe to have it work properly. It doesn't work properly. I lost days of productivity trying to overcome the shortfalls and apparently I'm hearing I can't resolve the issue without an expenditure of hundreds potentially thousands of dollars for another system. If that was the case I wouldn't have upgraded to CC. CS4 worked fine and it was paid for. (As an aside, there was an additional error that the links didn't work as they pointed to the spreadsheet rather than the URL. Plus the issuu.com publisher turned all links live, including the database links that pointed to the database, so there were suddenly 10 links or so per record, none of which worked. This version of the document was saved as a PDF without hyperlinks as we decided that no links temporarily was better than 10 that didn't work. So that part remains to be done, another problem to overcome, as the autodetect hyperlinks seems to have a flaw as well when dealing with merged data).
