Wget error
Hi:
I am getting following error:
[root~]# wget http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo
--2013-06-03 08:49:44-- http://public-yum.oracle.com/public-yum-ol6.repo
Resolving public-yum.oracle.com... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution.
wget: unable to resolve host address “public-yum.oracle.com”
[root~]#
I tried all that is posted on internet but in vain.
While installing Oracle Linux 6, I skipped the network configuration step. Not sure if this is the error.
Internet is not working on this OEL 6 on vmware on windows7. However, Internet is working fine using the same wireless connection on Windows 7.
Please help me fix this ASAP.
Regards n thanks!

Hi Dude:
Thanks for the initial insight into the problem but it is still there. I followed your guidelines and then ran wget still the same error:
[root@ yum.repos.d]# ifconfig eth0 up
[root@ yum.repos.d]# service network restart

[root@ yum.repos.d]#
From the ifconfig output above its clear that eth0 is not detected. Well, I am on a wireless network and it set to be detected automatically. Its quite strange that I was able to access the yum repository in RHEL6.4 but in OEL6 its not working. I had not done anything specific for RHEL64.
This is my /etc/resolv.conf entry
# Generated by NetworkManager
search com
# No nameservers found; try putting DNS servers into your
# ifcfg files in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts like so:
# DNS1=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
# DNS2=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
# DOMAIN=lab.foo.com bar.foo.com
If I have to specify a DNS which IP should I use? the one from LAN Adapter Wireless Network IP (output of ipconfig in MSDOS on Windows 7 on which VMware in which OEL6 is installed) or VMNet1/VMNet8 IP?
Please advise.
Thanks n regards,
Samiullah

Your profile is low, but with 3 -5 days uninterrupted connection that should rise to 1000kbps (1meg). First of all we need to solve your dropping connection, your output power also looks worryingly low.
Can I ask what type of master socket do you have?

Therefore how can the connection times be different if all equipment has not been touched or unplugged, why is the recent event log not showing all events since Feb 2 2010 and should I be worried as to where my hub is trying to contact (BLACKHOLE)??
(pbthdm.bt.motive.com) was discussed on another thread.

Sporadic random disconnects this week, very bad to...
I've never had any problems with BT Home 2.0 until this week, I have moved nothing about in my room nor adjusted any settings on the hub and my PC. I have changed the filter and still the same problems occur. I've noticed a lot CRC /HEC errors on the up stream... I live in Bristol if that might help to solve the problem. Maybe something next door could be affecting the line or a BT engineer has messed around with something on the exchange? (I am using a wired connection BTW). Any help and suggestions appreciated, thanks, Rob.

Trace complete.Sorry I can't offer any magic suggestions. I had been getting regular disconnects for some months and even though I was keeping the router continuoulsy powered to avoid loss of line synchronisation it still was occurring. See my comments in the thread "Re: Disconnects on Accessing HH and Random Disconnects at Night" for 10 Feb.
The Forum Moderators were very helpful and responded to my queries and arranged four visits from OpenReach to try and sort out the problem. Eventually they decided that there was a fault in the exchange boards and made some change. Subsequently I kept the router powered up until the 13 May to make sure there was no synchronisation interrupts. The line eventually stabilised at 14,336 kbps. It has remained at that even with my logical disconnects at night from the HH Home Page.
I found from a search back in Jan as reported in the thread "Re: HH Type B Energy Consumption & Switching Off the Router" , that the Type A software version was 8.1.H.J. I don't know if it has been upgraded since. I have found for my Type B that when received it back in Oct 2010 the ver was 4.7.5.1.83.3.5. and it is now ....83.3.18. - when it was changed/upgraded I don't know.
As I say, although I still get random disconnects, it doesn't seem to affect my line rate. Not sure if it is noise on the line (i have made a quiet line check and that is OK) as the Noise Margin is ca 7.6-9.1dB. I get disconnects sometimes when I try to look at the ADSL Settings, etc., having typed in the password for access. I have just looked at my Events Log and there have been a number of disconnects today since the router was logically connected at 14:04 this afternoon; 5 in total I think! And the rate is still shown as 14,336 kbps.

Having said that your rate is quite reasonable and unless you are playing games or watching videos perhaps the interrupts will not be serious. We only use it for email, family history, ebay and browsing so it is not really noticeable.

Hi
My internet is really slow and lagging, i cant see any problems in my area (northamptonshire) so thought doing a test on my line to check speed might help, only it wont work!

Please I need help - 6mths of talking to BT and no...
I have been having problems with my broadband since September 2010. The ironic things is, that when it works it is fantastic 19meg downloads. We just keep losing wirless and random points of the day and night. The wired connections also slow down. The wirless devices can see the router and are connected, but not get beyond. They don't all disconnect at the same time either.
I have lost counts of how many times I have rung the call centre. I have changed, filters, cables on numerous occassions.
After one engineer came he called India as he suspected they had been tampering, after this call everyting started working fantastically, alas this was only for 48 hours. Then all the original problems reurned.
We have now has 4 engineers out (apparently they are all different engineers....). Still have the same problems. There are pages and pages or error logs on the router (no-one at BT understands these apparently!). eg

Best way to clone a installation
Hi
I installed and configured arch on an older machine and now would like to clone the installation (mostly because all the mail settings, etc) to a different machine... my plan was to install the basic installtion from a live cd and then copy all files from the old / .
I know there are certain files than are machine specifiic eg. /etc/fstab, the extlinux loader file etc...
so I tried to copy everything but these machine specific files, but that ruined the installation so I guess I am doing something wrong. Is there an easier way to clone the setup or did I just miss a specific file?
Does anyone have experience in this issue?
regards,
keen
Last edited by keen90 (2011-09-03 23:38:26)The user issue is fine now.
I used an external hard drive to copy my old installations data and did not use
cp -ar
so the permissions were missing. I fixed that.
I'll post my /var/log messages in a couple of minutes.
One more thing. I am a bit worried about the system I tried a pacman update und had these messages:

I'm new to arch and just tried to install it on a G3 iBook. I tried the quickinstall way, but there was this wget error so it didn't work. Then I tried setup which, which was fine. For kernel installing I chrooted to the new install and used pacman. While I was at it I checked config files and so far I think they're ok. Exit the chroot, install yaboot, that was basically it. But the new install's /dev is completely empty (makedevs is not available after chrooting) except for console, null and zero. So I used pacman to install MAKEDEV and created nodes for hda. But even with this it still doesn't boot. I noticed that /dev/hda3 is being generated at boot, still I get this:
kinit: Cannot open root device hda3(3,3)
kinit: init not found!
So I guess everything is fine until the boot process comes to the point of accessing /, where it borks. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?Changed everything to persistent block device naming like mentioned here, with little effect. By now I don't think that the error is connected to error in my configs, I think it connected to this:
:: Running Hook [udev]
:: Loading udev.../etc/start_udev: 110: /sbin/udevtrigger: not found
/etc/start_udev: 110: /sbin/udevsettle: not found
If I understand this correctly then udev just isn't starting up correctly, right? Both mentioned symlinks are present in /sbin, so what might be the problem here?
Update: Like mentioned here I reinstalled the packages (look in post #13) and rebuild the image, but still no love. I desperately need help because I'm out of ideas.. the kernel boots, but when it comes to accessing the harddrive, everything goes down the drain.
Edit: For additional infos, I also posted my problem in this thread. Should I really just kill everything and try to install via quickinst, replacing wget with snarf in the process? How should I even do this?

So I'm trying to skype my girlfriend but I always get disconnected and my internet gets destroyed by it for about 10 minutes. It eventually comes back though. This is unbearable.
Here's my log if it helps:

Broadband speed has dropped quite considerably
Hi,
I usually have a 12-16mb speed with total broadband option 3 package in my area, but it has dropped to below 3mb. I've done a BT speedtest without result as it leaves a message it cannot complete the test.
I have recently updated my cables after a previous issue, and my cable plugs directly into the test socket. I am not using an extension

Solved!
Go to Solution.Have you been having problems with router dropping connection or manual resets or a combination of both?
I think you are in a banded profile because of the drop/resets but if you maintain a stable connection 24/7 for 3/5 days the banding should release automatically with noise margin falling and speed increasing. If you get to 3+days connection time and still 3072 then repost your stats and mods will help you get out banding

Funny how when i threaten to ask for my MAC code and leave BT my net speed shoots back to where it should be - almost instantly!.
ANyway now all sudden my hub is constantly rebooting - actualy - it just goes to rboot and does **bleep** all . i have to reset it to reconect. TWICE in 5 minutes!!!

One disconnect a day should not be causing major problems, if this isn't impacting your SNR figure or killing your download speed it should be ok.
Can you post up hub stats and a www.speedtester.bt.com for us to have a look please?

Low Noise Margin, Regular Drop Outs of Broadband?
I have noticed recently that my HH2 type B router is showing at various times a disconnect yellow LED. This was not causing a major problem, but on reflection I think it has been happening since before Christmas. I decided to check on the HH2 ADSL Connections and Event Log pages and keep copies of the text from 24 Feb. Although I usually switch the HH off with the computer, I have refrained from doing so for the last week or two in case that was a possible cause. The Event Log shows short connection times.
I appear to have a small noise margin varying between 2.5 and 3.4 dB with the download speed of ca 18.0+ Mbps. I have carried out a Quiet Line test on our corded phone and the line is perfectly quiet to the ear. There have been no house wiring changes.
Looking now at the Event Log it appears that the broadband disconnects in most cases are very regular every 30 mins - most odd? Even between 01:00 and 06:00 hrs in the morning on 25 Feb my log shows 30 min drop out interval!
Have BT made some kind of alteration to the Crowthorne exchange to cause the NM to sit below the normal level and for regular resets - seems unlikely?
Back in Dec. 2012 in my thread "Re: Failure to Reset the Line to Original Rate following Cable Replacement" I was getting 15,876 kbps with a Noise margin of 6.0dB. I still have the ferrite ring on the HH PSU cable. It seems my line is being "squeezed" and giving me 18+ Mbps with drop outs.
Should I request a Mod to reset my NM perhaps to a more reasonable value?

Solved!
Go to Solution.Thank you both for the replies. I had wondered 'imjolly' if there could be a reason which you appear to confirm. I have looked at the notes in the link 'John46'. I have not noticed any problems with the HH2 or its PSU plug; the wireless link works well and my wife can now print to the HP Deskjet from her laptop. Three of the Ethernet LAN sockets are now in use on the HH2 for a network. One has the print server for the DeskJet and the main and standby Win 7 and Win XP machines occupy the other two.
Perhaps this home network might have some impact on the HH performance, but this should not really be so when the disconnects have also occurred in the early morning with everything switched-off, bar the router.
I shall continue to watch the behaviour and if it becomes too annoying perhaps a higher NM would be requested. Games, videos and TV are not watched when such such interrupts could be unacceptable.

Hi, recently my HomeHub has been disconnecting randomly and frequently. I checked the event logs and there appears to be a socket error of some sort.
Does anyone know whats happening with this from the error log below?
Thanks in advance.

errorQuick search revelaed that the following use port 2869:
Microsoft Internet Connection Firewall (ICF), Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), SSDP Discover Service, Microsoft Universal Plug n Play (UPnP), Microsoft Event Notification.
Not sure why they would cause the hub problems, I would of thought it would of just limited your PC access.
Hmm one for the tech heads me thinks..
