What 1TB drives to buy?

Hi Guys,
I am about to buy 2x1TB drives to go inside my Powermac G5. Could someone let me know if the two types of drives I have linked to below are suitable? If not could you suggest a suitable 1TB alternative.

  • What combo drive to buy

    Hi all
My daughter bought a 12" 600mhz ibook on ebay, and I would like to purchase and install for her a combo drive for Christmas. I feel I have missed a few good opportunities on ebay since I am not sure which brand to buy, nor do I know what the differences in description are, ie: some say" slot loading" some say "dual usb"...and so forth. Can anyone give me some direction here?
I know my Pismo G3 powerbook quite well inside and out, and have done most of the upgrades myself, but on this ibook I am clueless. Is this an easy install?
    Thanks for any help.
    Sarah

The Combo drive in my 800 MHz G3 iBook is a "Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2412," if that helps.
DT & T Computer Service sells compatible drives:
    http://www.dttservice.com/ibookg3.html#ibkoptical
If you're looking at used, PowerBook Tech parts out iBooks and sells the parts.
    It is not exactly easy:

MacService will do it for you for $185:

  • Advice on what hard drive to buy for Raid

I will buying 8 of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136544 these hard drives and i will be using a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816131004 raid controller to put them in RAID 3. Western Digital sais that these hard drives are not suitable for raid, the only hard drive i can find that is, is this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136797. I was wondering if there is an actaul difference between these two that makes a difference. Also I was wondering if any of you guys know of another hard drive that would be good for raid that is below 100$.

Your drive and controller choice look good to me.
I have used an Areca controller with WD Blacks for the past couple of years, and so long as you do have some form of backup other than RAID 5 redundancy on your PC you should be OK with "consumer" drives (aka WD Blacks, Hitachi Deskstar, etc.) as opposed to "enterprise" drives intended for RAID systems (AKA WE RE3, RE4, Hitachi Ultrastar, etc.).
    The enterprise drives have:
    - generally better parts - possibly some companies pick the best platters with the fewest defects for their more expensive drives
    - sometimes some features that help with vibrations caused by multiple drives in a PC all working in tandem
    - almost always a feature that will keep the enterprise drive from continuing to try and correct any error while reading or writing beyond a set number of seconds; WD calles this TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery);
I've seen individuals suggesting that the spin-up time setting be increased from the default of .7 seconds up to 1 second when using consumer drives to help prevent consumer drives from being flagged as bad. I have not done this and I've never had a drive drop out in two years.
I have about 50% enterprise drives (RE3 1TB WD's) and about 50% consumer drives (Black 1TB 32MB cache) which are very similar, except for firmware. In two years I've had one bad drive; no data was lost, just performance of the RAID and even that was pretty subtle. And by the way it was one of the RE3 drives that did go bad, not one of the consumer drives! When I started with the WD drives it was possible to download some software and set the TLER time on the consumer drives and gain much of the benefits of the enterprise models without paying for the much more expensive drives. Then, about a year ago WD changed their WD Black line to defeat this utility (it was a WD TLER utility!) from working with their consumer drives any more; yes, their have been some upset users over this one!

  • Advice on what SATA drives to buy

I want to install 2 sata drives as RAID0 on SATA 1,2.   It looks like i should stay away from the WD and Maxtor because of the BxP bridge chip issues, right? (Don't know what vendor has what vintage in stock, and I want to avoid the RMA loop).  So that leaves me with Seagate:
Which one?: (from their web site)
    Barracuda 7200.7 SATA
    Barracuda Serial ATA V
    Barracuda 7200.7 SATA plus
    Best Regards

I have had the Seagate drives in my sig connected to both the Intel and the Promise controllers in Raid0 with no compatibility issues. For some reason myself and others have noticed that the Intel Raid0 config is slower than the Promise for read speeds. Write speeds are the same.

  • I've got a late 2009 mac mini with a 320gb hard drive and I want to upgrade it to a 1tb drive or bigger. What HDDs are compatible with my mini?

I've got a late 2009 mac mini with a 320gb hard drive and I want to upgrade it to a 1tb drive or bigger. What HDDs are compatible with my mini?
Because of the price I'm not interested in solid state drives, unless of course you want to send me $1,000.
I've already got external drives but I take my mini back and forth to work and don't want to carry those drives with me.
I'm not interested in buying a laptop. My mini works great so why waste $1,000 or more when I can buy a 1 to 3 TB hdd for under $300 and have exactly what I want. My late 2009 Mac Mini with a large hdd.
I went to Crucial's website and they can't tell me what drives fit my Mac Mini. That's where I got my ram (8GB). I'm ONLY interested in name brand quality HDDs.

The limiting factor in your 2009 mini is the max 9.5mm drive thickness.
One of the largest capacity 2.5" drives that meets this criteria is the HGST (formerly Hitachi) at 1.5GB
Any reputable SATA HDD you can find that is not thicker then this 9.5mm will work.

  • Whats the real size of a 1TB drive?

    Hello,
Whats the real storage size of a 1TB drive? I just formatted a 1TB drive in Disk Utility using Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the disc is running about 931.5. Where does the rest of the storage go?
    thanks

-> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1867 (this article is for iPods but this info applies to all disk drives)
"Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."

  • What Backup drive should I buy

I am looking to purchase a backup drive. The size 2GB, I am considering the Apple wireless drive but should I look at any other manufacturer?
I am also going to use this drive initially to restore the erased data from my second internal drive. This also leads me to ask what recovery software should I consider.
    I would appreciate any feedback.
    mel

Many people on these forums use OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series. IMHO that is all that I will buy, high quality and reasonable price. You can find them by clicking
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
As for what software, you should buy 2 of these drives. The first drive should use Apple's Time Machine, it's already built into OS X. The reason for a second drive is when it comes to backing up redundancy is very smart because backups can fail too. For drive two use a cloning app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Don't know what kind of hard drive to buy

i'm looking to expand my computer. i'm way past the point of having no more space left and i've found some pretty good deals on 300+ GB hard drives, but i don't know which ones will work in my computer.
the hard drive currently in my computer is a 180GB ultra ATA/100 (7200 rpm)
the problem is that, aside from rpm (revolutions per minute), i have no idea what any of this means. does the drive i buy have to be ATA/100? or can i buy ann ATA/300? what is the difference? does the ultra ATA have anything to do with it? because some of them just say ATA, or serial ATA.
i really don't want to spend the money, have it shipped, and get it open only to find out that i bought one that won't work with my machine.
i'm sure the answer to this question is pretty obvious, but no one ever explained it to me, and i'm just becoming more confused trying to find the answer myself through google.
    thank you in advance!

is a bus a port for a hard drive? cause i have four of those. a guy at the mac genius bar explained that to me once when my tower was open. showed me where everything was and kind of explained what it did. i can put four hard drives in my computer. but does that mean that there is a certain one of the three remaining slots i have to put the new hard drive in? because i'm keeping the old one as well. no sense in wasting 180G of space.
and since you obviously have a pretty good handle on this whole thing, which of these drives looks better to you?
    http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=928341
    http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=803402
i know the bigger one is also slightly less expensive, but it has 8MB while the other one is ten dollars more and 20G less, but has 16MB
how important is that, really? and can my computer even make use of it since it's pretty old?
thank you so much for all the help you've given so far.

I recently purchased a Mac Book Air and wanted to know what would be the best external hard drive to buy as far as the brand and GB or TB are concerned? I will basically just be storing music, papers, and a lot of pictures. Also, how should I go about charging my computer? Should I wait until it is close to dying and then charge it?

I have had good success with HGST and Seagate HDDs.  I suggest a HDD that is powered by the MBA eliminating the need for an AC cord.  They now come up to 1.5 TB in capacity.  In my opinion, one cannot have too much storage.  If necessary, let your bank account be your guide.
    Ciao.

  • LaCie 1TB Drive on it's Death Bed?

    Hello all,
I've got a LaCie 1TB drive that I've had now for about 4 years… It's got a little space left on it ~36GB. I can copy files off of it fine but I can't copy files to it, nothing. Not even a single .jpg file without getting the following message
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data could not be read or written.
    (Error code -36)"
I've tried with countless files and copying to and from other drives and using other CPUs but this one drive won't allow files to be copied to it. I've used 3 different drive utilities and each one says that the drive is fine. But it's clearly not.
Here are a few things I think I might have to do but just can't…
1: Buy a new 1TB drive and transfer everything then erase and copy back. (Too expensive and unnecessary)
2: Back up 1TB to DVD-R erase then copy back. (Too expensive and unnecessary)
3: Erase the drive and try to recover the deleted data. (Too risky as the data is needed)
4: Erase the drive and start over. (Unbelievable but…)
5: The drive is 4 years old and should die this year, retire it. (???)
Any advice on this is greatly appreciated. Also what is the expected life of a RAID0 drive setup. I know if one of the drives fail all of the data is irrecoverable isn't it?

I don't know if there's any particular "life expectancy" difference for RAID 0, but I do know that for every drive you add, you're that much more likely to lose all your data.
I know if one of the drives fail all of the data is irrecoverable isn't it?
Right, because it puts little parts of the files on each drive. RAID 0 is all about speed (and living dangerously). When I was using a lot of RAID 0 drives, I only put stuff on them that I felt I could lose. And sometimes I did lose it.

because 4GB RAM don't go that far with your system and with photos.
Between the OS, other apps, your photo editing program, file sizes of photos, and the system needs free memory and cache.
SSD helps when you are low on memory and to load apps.
your photos should not be on the boot drive.

  • Types of external hard drives to buy.

    Hi,
can anyone provide me with some advice on purchasing external hard drives. What I'm looking for is a high capacity drive around 1-2 TB that will allow two users to access the same files at once. In other words mount on two seperate computers at once. I believe the answer is found in RAID drives but I'm not that clued up on RAID drives and need a bit of help. The external hard drives I've looked at so far are ones from Western Digital and G-Raid.
If its not possible to obtain a drive that will allow me to mount it onto to seperate computers at once and read the same files then I would settle for a solid external drive that can:
    - handle large HD files
    - store data reliably
    Thanks

USB 2.0 is the connection that is natively supported on the T400, no eSATA or Firewire port i think, you can get these ports by buying an expansion card for the card slot (i think it is the expresscard one) on the T400.
Regarding a 1TB drive, most of the large drive manufacturers have one out, but i suggest you unless you need the large capacity, i would stick with a smaller drives like 750 gig or 500 gig since the cost gigabyte is lower. Also i would stay away for storing all your important files solely in these drive, because if these things start to fail it would be on a moment's notice, you probably won't even have time to backup the files, before the harddrive gives up on you.

  • Warning on Gen2 1TB drive failing

I have seen a few posts and now within a couple of weeks have seen the 1TB drive A1302 fail.
The drive is a WD black caviar.. I am sure posting this warning will not help many people.. other than posthumously..
These drives seem to be failing in large numbers now.. they don't all seem to fail in the same way but it is the first time a drive in the TC has become generally faulty. So if the TC goes bad it is likely that both power supply and hard drive are shot.
Store any files you want to keep off the TC today.. now.. do not wait.
The cost of fixing both TC power supply and hard disk makes it uneconomic. Just buy a new one. IMHO!

The failures you are reporting refer to problems with data contained on the drive, where Disk Utility is unable to repair the associated files or directories so that they may be read correctlty. The drive hardware is probably still working fine & not permanently damaged by the corrupted data. In most cases, if you reformat the affected drive (after recovering what files you can) you will then be able to re-use the drive. If Disk Utility is able to reformat the affected drive, the your drive has not been "bricked."
Since you described multiple failures with various drives, it's important to rule out possible electrical problems which can result from damaged/defective USB cables, or under-powered drives. Any AirPort-attached hard drive should have its own power supply, and not depend on the AirPort or a USB hub to provide spin-up power. You should also be aware that Apple has received multiple reports of similar symptoms — corrupted data and directories on USB attached drives attached to AirPort Base Stations.
Since Apple is in the very early stages of recognizing an issue with the file handling firmware embedded in AirPort Exremes (and possibly Time Capsules) you can help the effort to identify & fix this problem by reporting your issue to Apple Wireless Technical Support.
Meanwhile, run Disk Utility frequently on any USB drives used with your AirPort — particularly if you're making frequent changes to the drives' contents. (FYI — DiskWarrior appears able to detect/correct minor disruptions to a drive's contents before Disk Utility is able to spot them.) For the time being, vigilance is probably your best defence …

  • Can I replace a 1TB drive with a 2TB

I own a first generation Time Capsule with a 1 TB drive (6,106.) The light just started flashing amber and the message with Airport Utility is "Internal Disk Needs Repair." Assuming the drive has gone south, can I replace this 1TB drive with a 2TB one, or is there a BIOS restriction.

It is just time.. the TC were designed to run too hot for the power supply to last.
The fan should be running all the time as indeed they do in the new versions. The supply will be on the edge and in fact what you are experiencing maybe power supply.. it depends.. if yours is Gen1 with 1TB hitachi drive I have yet to see a dead drive.. lots of dead supplies.
If you have Gen2 they changed to WD black.. and lots of the drives are dead.. the typical WD fail 3 spin ups and then nothing. Tell me if you have A1254 or A1302.. from the bottom rubber Mat top line.
New Green drives are lower power consumption but due to their design of spinning down whenever possible they have a bigger motor for start up.. it pulls 2A at 12V and the power supply in the early TC cannot sustain it.
So if you replace disk you really need to replace power supply.
I have a lot of suggestions.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
    And even repair kits.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
But the design is fully explained.. so if you want to DIY you can.
I have had several people come to me after upgrading the hard disk and finding it then didn't work.. due to power supply being on the edge and a replacement with external 12v supply fixes it.
But is it economic.. ?? That is the question.. If you have a Gen1 with an hitachi drive it could be worth it. As the drive could still be good.. pull it out and test it.
Otherwise buy a second hand Gen4 with 2TB drive already in it. They sell for around $180 here if you shop well. A Gen4 is cheaper than power supply plus hard disk repair for a Gen1 or Gen2 and you get 50% faster hard disk access with the same drive... (TC are processor bound and later ones have 50% faster processor) and better wireless. Or get a new TC.. which is a big jump in price but comes with full warranty.

  • Moving music to new 1TB drive

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I have a 500GB and a 250GB external. I'm wanting to move the music from my 250GB to a new 1TB. I want to use the 1TB and the 500GB daisy-chained together and then erase everything from my 250GB and just use that for home recording projects. I'm kind of afraid to attempt this as I don't want to lose the music from the 250. I hope I'm making sense. Thanks in advance.

So my "iTunes" folder is on my mac HD. I just want to move the music from one external to my new 1TB external. So I guess iTunes is pulling stuff from my mac hd, my 500GB and my 250GB drives.
OK, then if it's scattered among a number of folders, here's what you have to do:
iTunes: Moving Your iTunes Music Folder
Again, don't delete the tracks from their old locations until you've confirmed that everything is working correctly from the 1TB drive. And IMPORTANT: do not delete the iTunes folder or the preference files it contains from your boot hard drive; delete ONLY the tracks themselves (i.e. the contents of the old iTunes Music folders).
I'd also strongly advise that before you start moving things around, you make a backup of any content purchased from the iTunes Store or that would otherwise be difficult to replace, just in case something goes wrong.
    Regards.
