What data does SNMP return and what is the best way to explore it?

Hi All
I have some queries about using SNMP on Cisco devices.
1. What is the best way to get an idea of what data MIBs can return?
I have entered the commmand "show snmp mib". However, the number of MIBs generated is huge!
2. Can you enter a command on the Cisco device itself that returns snmp data?
e.g. if I want to see what data a MIB entry returns, can I interrogate it on the Cisco device itself rather than having to rely on network management software?
The reason I ask is that we are currently looking for Network Management Software. However, I have no idea what data SNMP can return, therefore don't know if what the Management Software offers is comprehensive or not.
Any suggestions on how best to get an idea the data SNMP can generate plus any other suggestions are very welcome!
Thanks
John

Generally speaking, snmp can query about any parameter of the system. An enterprise class device has almost all conceivable parameters instrumented thus. A device's inventory (chassis, cards, ports, power supplies, software image, etc.) and the state of its interfaces and traffic they are carrying are among the primary ones.
You can query a device's snmp variables remotely "by hand" using an open source distribution of a tool like snmpwalk. You need to know what you're looking for - i.e., the exact oid (object ID) string or else you get a long reply like you alluded to. It also helps to have the actual MIB you are querying against locally so that the output you get will be human-readable. Otherwise you'll get long numeric strings (the snmp oid) followed by alphanumeric values which may or may not make sense at first glance depending on the oid being queried. A MIB's purpose is to add that abstraction layer / interpretation to make the output more useful to the operator.
The purpose of an NMS (very generally speaking) is to give an even higher layer of abstraction to organize the querying and reporting of all these various data into a useful system with dashboards, graphs, reports etc.

I'm possibly wrong here but I suspect opening a brand new MBP to add parts yourself will void the warranty.  It is probably in the small print.  I certainly would not risk it for an expensive Apple product.
Some (Windows) laptops have easy access to memory and disk slots that do not necessitate taking the complete back cover off.  However, Apple does not make life easy for you.
However, if you are going for a 'used' machine it is probably worth a try.
Not possibly, definitely wrong, Ram and Hard Drive are considered user replaceable and will not void the warranty if changed.

No: draining to near 0% is not advisable. It's best to charge recharging at 20%:

  • What is the best way to explore a hierarchical folder structure?

    Hallo,
I need to access and navigate a hierarchical folder structure hosted in a MS SQL Server database. In particular there is a root folder containing several folders. Each child-folder contains further nested folders or documents.
For each item I need to retrieve the folder's (name, path, etc) and the documents (title, author, etc.) details that are retrievable from the DB fields. Afterwards I will use these data to create a semantic web ontology using Jena API.
My question was about which is the best way to proceed.
A collegue of mine suggested to use the "WITH" command of SQL Server to create and use a link list to navigate easily the structure, executing just one query rather than several (one for each level of the nested loops). However in this way the solution will work only with the SMQ Server database, while my goal is to achieve a more general solution.
    May someone help me?
    Thank you in advance,
    Francesco

My goal is to create a documents library ontology achieving, from each element of the hierarchy (folder or document), some data (title, parent, etc.) and use them to "label" the ontology resources.
I will use a little of both approches in the following way:
    1) I make just ONE query on folder table to get, from each folder, its path (eg. root/fold1/fold2/doc1.pdf), its ID and ParentID and ONE on the Documents table to get the containerID, title, etc.
    2) I create as many Folder objects as the retrieved records and an HashTable, where the KEY = Folder.ParentID value and the VALUE = Vector<Folder>. I add then each object to the Vector relative to the same ParentID. In this way I have an Vector containing all the folders child of the same parent folder and I do the same for an HashTable keeping the documents contained in a specific folder.
3)I extract from the HashTable the root folder (whose ParentID is always "0" and whose ID is "1") than it is invoked the method appendChild() (see code)
public static void appendChild(int ID, Resource RES)
              Vector<Folder> currFold = table.get(ID);
              for(int i=0; i<currFold.size(); i++)
//Extract the child and crate the relative resource
                   if(table.containsKey(currFold.getID()))
                        appendChild(currFold[i].getID(), Resource newRES);
In this way I go in depth in the hirarchical structure using a "left most" procedure. I made a test and the output is correct. However, such an approch must be done for about 4 level depth folders (around 30 in total) containing also documents and creating the documents library of a Project. Then I must process around 20 project to achieve for all of them such a documents library representation.
By the way, I do not have to mantein the HashTable content after I created the docs library ontology. Hence I use just one hashTable for ALL the projects and I flush it after I finish to do the loop for one project in order to save resources.
My question is: is right my approach or might I improve it in some way?
    Thank you for every suggesion/comment.

  • Startup Disk Full. What exactly does this mean and what can I do about it?

I was downloading some TV shows from the itunes store when my computer informed me that my startup disk was almost full and iTunes informed me that there was an error with the downloading because my disk was full. I assume this means that the hard drive memory is full, but I don't know if there is anything more specific I should know. We've had this computer for several years and recently updated to Snow Leopard and iLife 09. I have a lot of music and pictures, and I would rather not have to delete a lot of them to free up more memory space. Are there other things I can do to clear memory space or add more?

    Hi
+"Are there other things I can do to clear memory space or add more?"+
Yes. Either replace the internal drive with a much larger one or purchase an externally attached drive (USB or Firewire or both) and transfer all your pictures and movies onto that instead. Either way will involve an outlay of some sort? Another way would be to start backing up less important photos, music and movies onto CD or better still DVD. You do have a built-in DVD Burner of some description. You could use it as that is primarily one of the reasons it's there for. Once you've backed up desired data start deleting it from the internal drive.
It's important to leave some free space on the drive that contains the Operating System. Not doing so will invariably cause potentially major problems in terms of performance and the proper running of your computer. Think of it this way. If you were to constantly stuff yourself full of food would you be able to function properly or as well as you normally do? Not a great analogy but should give you enough of an idea?

It really won't matter which device you use to purchase and download the rental, though if your computer has a wired connection to the Internet, it may be a bit less susceptible to problems than the iPad's Wifi connection. For instructions either way, see:

  • What is the best way to mimic the data from production to other server?

    Hi,
here we user streams and advanced replication to send the data for 90% of tables from production to another production database server. if one goes down can use another one. is there any other best option rather using the streams and replication? we are having lot of problems with streams these days they keep break and get calls.
I heard about data guard but dont know what is use of it? please advice the best way to replicate the data.
    Thanks a lot.....

RAC, Data Guard. The first one is active-active, that is, you have two or more nodes accessing the same database on shared storage and you get both HA and load balancing. The second is active-passive (unless you're on 11.2 with Active Standby or Snapshot Standby), that is one database is primary and the other is standby, which you normally cannot query or modify, but to which you can quickly switch in case primary fails. There's also Logical Standby - it's based on Streams and generally looks like what you seem to be using now (sort of.) But it definitely has issues. You can also take a look at GoldenGate or SharePlex.

  • What's the best way to set up my TC?

Hey guys... I'm pretty new to Mac/Bootcamp/TimeCapsule and all these great stuffs... I've bought a macbook pro, a 3TB time capsule, apple tv and a WD 3TB Storage External Hard Drive.
I also bought Parallels... Now let me explain you what I'm looking for and what I've done until now (sorry about my English):
I installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp... It's working great... Now I'm studying all the ways I can set up my timecapsule, I first need to think about it for doing things on the right way and don't need to go back and set up everything again. That's why I need some help from experts.
I NEED to run windows on my mac because I'm architect and I use all Autodesk programs, specially Revit Architecture, and it works only on Windows.
All my stuff is on my 3TB WD External Hard Drive (including personal photos, videos, music and work files).
I partitioned my HD (my macbook has 1 TB) this way: 600 GB for Macintosh and about 300 GB for Windows. I intended to do this: All my files related to my work (architectural work, Autodesk files, libraries etc), I would copy to my Windows partition, and I would install all Autodesk programs, including other programs like CorelDraw and Photoshop, there...
All my other files (personal videos, music, photos) I would copy to Macintosh HD Partition... That would be a good way to work.
BUT I know is possible to set up TimeCapsule as a file server.... So, it would be a good idea to save my "autodesk"/work files in TimeCapsule and working directly from there? Or it would slow down my workflow? It would depend of my Internet connection or it would read my files using an internal connecting? (without affecting speed when reading files).
It would be nice to storage my work files in TimeCapsule because I would not fill space from my Macbook HD... But it would be a problem when I eventually need to make a trip or visit a client and take my macbook to access files from there, right? It would not be easy simply "copy one or two files" to my macbook because there's libraries, file links, references from libraries storaged on "windows program files" etc...
As you can see I'm very worried and lost about the best way to proceed.... I also wrote a lot, sorry. Let me simplify things again:
    1) I have my files from work in Windows Partition, and my personal files in Macintosh partition
    2) I need to access my work files (Windows) eventually when I take my macbook in a trip, but I can't copy those files to it, they need to stay in a static path (they depend of other files, references, settings, external libraries etc)
    3) I want to setup my TimeCapsule to do automatic backups of all my files (both stored on Windows and Mac partitions. Is it possible in windows? Or TC just do that in files in iOS X?)
    4) I also have the option to install Parallels, but I don't know if it would be a nice choice (I'm worried to lose speed when I work in large projects on 3D programs).
Please, can someone help me out?

BUT I know is possible to set up TimeCapsule as a file server...
What is possible is not necessarily easy or best.
In fact the TC is not a file server.. and was never designed for that. It is primarily a backup for Time Machine.
So, it would be a good idea to save my "autodesk"/work files in TimeCapsule and working directly from there?
No, that would be a very poor way to work. Keeping and using live files on the TC.. especially if you use wireless to access them would be very bad. Less bad but still slow over ethernet.
You can backup completed projects to the TC but certainly don't use it for live work files.. they should always be on the local hard disk.
It would be nice to storage my work files in TimeCapsule because I would not fill space from my Macbook HD... But it would be a problem when I eventually need to make a trip or visit a client and take my macbook to access files from there, right?
You might be better to redo the setup of the computer..
Partition the space with much more available for windows.. put more of your personal files, onto a USB drive you plug into the computer.
All my other files (personal videos, music, photos) I would copy to Macintosh HD Partition... That would be a good way to work.
You seem to have a conflict between using it for work purposes and personal use.. In fact almost I would say you need two laptops.. but perhaps that is not acceptable.
You cannot build a computer to be everything to everyone. If you have competition for use.. IMHO the part that makes you money is more important than the personal interest. And info like videos and music can live happily on a 2.5" 1TB USB3 drive you use for that.
The TC cannot backup windows.. The Mac OS cannot really backup windows.. in fact you should exclude windows file from the backup for a number of reasons.. mostly it is too big and is pretty much useless when you rebuild a machine. You need to backup windows from within windows.. use a suitable Windows backup software.. Genie TIme Line pro is popular here because it is vaguely like Time Machine.
Time Machine of course backs up your Mac partition and you can include the external USB drive in the backup as long as it is correctly formatted HFS+.
You have lots to learn.. feel free to ask questions.. but take it a bit at a time. Hard to read slabs of text.

  • What is causing this problem and what are you doing to fix it? Should I just go back to Internet Explorer?

Every single day, Firefox crashes and sometimes in the most inopertune time. This is very frustrating as some of the times I can not go back in and correct what I was not able to do due to your site crashing. What is causing this problem and what are you doing to fix it? Should I just go back to Internet Explorer?

First, you must use a specific [[Managing profiles|profile]] for Firefox 4.0 Beta and keep your current one for Firefox 3.6 to prevent interferences between the two versions.
    For your problem:
    # [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] could be a cause.
    # If not 1. and if it does not happen in [[Safe Mode]], you must disable HW acceleration in Options > Advanced > General. If it solves your issue, your graphic driver is out-of-date and must be updated. Go to your computer manufacturer support site.

Yes, you can move your user directories to the HD and keep your OSX and Applications on the SSD drive.
Whether you partition your HD or not depends on how much data you have and how you propose to use your HD.
Are you planning to use your iMac as a Time Machine backup volume? If so, partition it off.
Do you have huge data files, eg video, music, photos?
How much of your 2tb drive will be "free" once it is loaded with all your data?
A little more information is required before the optimal configuration can be recommended for your use.
