What do those pre-boot kernel messages mean?

Hi,
directly after grub there are some lines printed on the screen (by the ramdisk or kernel?) and I don't know for sure what they mean. Especially the marked ones:
:Loading Initramfs
963: No such process
IP-Config: no device to configure
Waiting 0s before mounting root device...
Kinit: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly...
Init: version 2.86 booting
So the first one (second line in quote) is really curious. I mean what's he trying to do? He doesn't tell anything but "No such process".   But what process is he looking for and why? The digit 963 is changing. Sometimes it's 963 or 978 or ...
And the third line in the code tells it (the ramdisk?) is trying to configure a networkinterface? I don't want this at all because sometimes I use ethernet and other times (most of the time) wlan with a selfcompiled module... So I manage my network-connection by hand.
Can someone explain me the two lines and how to make them stop? Or point me to a rescource where I can find out about them?
For info: this happens on a vanilla 2.6.27.7.

I have also been bothered by this "###: No such process" thing for quite some time. Here is what I've found out.
As byte pointed out it has something to do with the kill line in the init script. That was the first clue where to look. What I've done is to repeat "$(/bin/minips -C udevd -o pid=)" a couple of times before and after the if statement. The result is that the minips reports not only udevd pid but also its own pid. After the udevd is killed minips continues to report its own pid. That is why the number changes all the time. I've tried to repeat the minips behavior outside the init script both in early user space (by passing "break=y" as boot argument) and when system has booted. Unfortunately I wasn't successful.
To get rid of the annoying, irrelevant "###: No such process" messages, until the bug in the minips is fixed upstream, we can patch our /lib/initcpio/init script with the following patch:
132c132
<     /bin/kill -9 ${udevpid}
>     /bin/kill -9 ${udevpid} 2>/dev/null
Weird. The -C flag shouldn't do this, as it's supposed to look at the command name only, not the arguments. Take a look at /proc/$SOME_PROC/stat which is the file it parses. The first two entries are: pid (cmdname).
I can't seem to reproduce this on a real system (running /usr/lib/klibc/bin/minips)

  • What does "File not readable" error message mean?

    I am trying to copy/paste art from a supposed "corrupt" file into a brand new document.  When I paste, I get this particular error message: File not readable.  What, exactly, does this mean?

    Amanda,
    It is nice to know that it works now. Thank you for letting us know.
    Actually, the solution was identical to this part of the list in post #3:
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup;
    I ruled that out because in post #2 you wrote
    I have tried EVERYTHING ... Dumped the preferences....
    Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift is the standard way of deleting = resetting = dumping the basic preferences so I was convinced you had done that already (hence my suggestion to start with 4 and skip 1) - 3)).
    Actually, when you
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed;
    as suggested in post # 3, you move all the preferences to another place so that they are reset to the defaults when you open Illy next time; this procedure is more thorough (and therefore capable of solving more issues) and reversible so you can get the preferences back if it does not help.
    I presume you did not try 4).

  • What does AXN on a received message mean?

    I sent an email from my gmail account to a friend's blackberry (don't know the model but think it an 8800 or something even newer). The message was all text, with no icons or attachments (that I was aware of), with the exception of a web address which appeared on gmail as an active URL hyper-link as you would expect. My friend then replies to my gmail via her blackberry in the form of a text message to my verizon cell phone. I see the letters "AXN" in her message to me and ask her what the acronym means. She says that AXN was already in the message she received from me (via gmail) though there is no such string of letters in the gmail message as viewed from my 'sent mail' folder.
    My friend is very concerned about her personal electronic security and is nervous about unexplained codes showing up in her incoming messages. I have promised her an explanation of just why AXN appeared on her blackberry. However, I cannot find an explanation of what the AXN code might mean in this context and would be very grateful if someone could provide me with one.

    To check which applications are installed on your palm, you can click on the home button on your palm and make sure it says "all" on the top right of your screen. This will show you all the apps installed on your palm. Look through all the applications listed there and see if there is anything extra. You can list them here and I will tell you if there is anything that didnt come with your device when you purchased it.
    You will not need the palm cd to reinstall everything again after you do a hard reset because all the info will be backed up on your computer from your sync. You stated that all the information is on your computer after you sync'd so you dont have to worry about losing it. Once you sync again after performing the hard reset, you will be able to get all the info back again on your palm.

    That's a problem writing to the Time Machine drive.
    As BDAqua says, verify your internal HD and repair the external, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    If that doesn't help, try the things in the green box of #D2 there.

  • What does this error message mean: "Filename: Mips32.ari TFTP Error: 'File not found' in AP-105"?

    Question: What does this error message mean: "Filename: Mips32.ari TFTP Error: ‘File not found’ in AP-105"?
    Product and Software: This article applies to AP-105.
    The root cause of this error is that the AP cannot perform a code upgrade.
    Scenario 1
    Check the ArubaOS code.
    The minimum requirement to bring up an AP-105 is ArubaOS 3.3.3+ or ArubaOS 3.4.1+.
    If the controller is running pre 3.3.3 code, upgrade the code to fix the issue.
    Scenario 2
    If the AP is not connected to the controller directly, bring up the AP in the controller and then connect it to the desired location. This process loads mips32.ari to the AP so that the AP can upgrade the code.
    Scenario 3
    The AP has no power adapter and you want to use the PoE feature. A few controller series like the 200 and 3000 Series do not support PoE. In this case, the AP cannot be terminated physically in the controller. Instead, connect the AP to the PoE switch, which is connected to the controller. Then assign a static IP configuration for the AP using the following commands:
    apboot> setenv ipaddr <ip address>
    apboot> setenv netmask <netmask>
    apboot> setenv gatewayip <ip address of the gateway>
    apboot> setenv master <ip address of the master>
    apboot> setenv serverip <ip address of the TFTP server>
    apboot> setenv bootcmd tftp
    apboot> save
    apboot> boot
    Locally configure the TFTP server for the AP and load the mips32.ari file from the controller with the help of the TFTP application.

    I want to download this file Mips32.ari for AP-105 device. Please give me this file download link. APBoot 1.2.4.4 (build 26618)

  • What does this message mean? : "The file name "DSC_0088.jpg" is offline or missing." ?

    What does this message mean? : "The file name "DSC_0088.jpg" is offline or missing."   I am in the process of importing photos from iPhoto (don't really know what I'm doing....) and when I look at one of the imported photos that message pops up.  I know what "DSC_0088.jpg" is.  I don't know what it means that the file is "missing".

    CASpyr,
    Thank you so much for your reply.  I have a couple of bigger issues that I am dealing with: too many photos on my laptop: 40,000! (Of course I have to throw away many of them, but that is time consuming). I have a MacBook Pro and have primarily used IPhoto. I have recently purchased 2 external drives and have transferred my photos to those, but I need a basic education about how photos are stored, copied, etc.  I have recently been told that iPhoto only shows and deals with jpegs, not RAW.  About 1/3 of my photos are RAW, so I purchased Lightroom, so I could do more with those RAW photos.  I have been told by my local Mac store that I need to delete most of my photos from iPhoto, because it's causing problems.  I am reluctant to do so until I am sure that all of the keywords, descriptions and editing I have done to these photos is not lost when deleted from iPhoto. I just watched a tutorial about importing to Lightroom and got out of it that I needed to copy photos from iPhoto to a file on my desktop and then copy to Lightroom.  I did that, it seemed to work.  Then (because of my storage/memory issues) I deleted the photos (just a few as an experiment) from that desktop file.  I'm guessing that is why Lightroom doesn't recognize the the photos.  It seems that (learned from another tutorial) that one uses "Add" , Lightroom is only connecting to the source of the photo, not  actually copying it to the program.  Sounds like I need to use the "Move" feature instead.  My ultimate goal is to store the photos on the 2 external drives and eliminate most of them from my lapop.  So my basic questions have to do with what data (metadata??) is copied from iPhoto to an external drive (RAW???) and what isn't copied. Basic understanding issues,obviously….  I hope this isn't too much to ask.  If you can recommend a book or resource that can explain those basic issues to me I'd appreciate it.  I just got back from a trip and I can't download my new photos until I manage the rest!
    Thanks,
    Nancy

  • What does this message mean: "power pc applications are no longer supported"?

    What does this message mean: you can not start because power pc applications are no longer supported?

    Here is a post that I assembled for another who needed to continue to run his PowerPC applications in Lion/Mt. Lion:
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions, or find alternative software that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
                                  [click on image to enlarge]
    Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
    NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
    NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.
