What Hard drives can unplug into my Airport Extreme?

Can I plug a normal flash stick into the AirPort Extreme or do only powered external hard drives work with it.

Make sure that USB flash drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT 32 before you plug it into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.

You can install any 3'5" SATA hard drive on a Late 2009 iMac. Have a look at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/hard_drives_and_SSD
Note that Late 2009 and later iMacs have got the temperature sensor inside the hard drive. If you install a hard drive without a sensor, fans won't work correctly. Read > http://blog.macsales.com/2751-proprietary-cable-can-put-the-brakes-on-upgrading- late-09-imacs

You can use the 2 TB Time Capsule as a network drive. That means that it must connect to one of the Ethernet LAN <--> ports on the new AirPort Extreme, or connect to the network using wireless.

Will Time Machine work with an external hard drive connected (via usb) to Airport Extreme?

Sorry, but this article is about 4 years old, and was printed based on preliminary information at the time.
The bottom line here is that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
If it works for you, great.
You might want to review the Apple Support documents below, which are far more recent than the article you reference:

    It is supported.....
This is NOT correct. Please do not post false information on the forums.

Is this drive a network drive (use the ethernet port) or a local drive (use the usb port)

  • What hard drives can be installed into a MBP?

I'm looking at options for upgrading the internal hard drive on my MBP, and have noticed that there are 250GB 2.5" drives available (e.g. http://www.skycomp.com.au/productinfo.php?productsid=67390). Can you install any old 2.5" drive into a MBP? If so, how hard is it to do? Are there any common gotchas with trying to image the old drive to the new one, esp. when using BootCamp?
Any help much appreciated. Apologies if this is a noob question.

*"Can you install any old 2.5" drive into a MBP?"*
Yes, as long as it's a SATA and not an IDE/ATA drive.
*"If so, how hard is it to do?"*
Instructions can be found at http://www.ifixit.com
Keep in mind though, that if you do decided to install it yourself you run the risk of voiding the computer's warranty.

  • What Hard Drive Can I use?

Ok stupid question time. I want to get a firewire enclosure and put 3.5 hard drive in it for my mac mini. Can I buy any old hard drive and jam it into the box or do I have to buya hard drive that is specific for the Mac? I mean are hard drives mac or pc specific or are the just hard drives and formatted to the pc or mac when you buy them? I am sorry for the dumb question but I have been a PC user for years and am pretty new to the Mac world (only 1 year so far). Thanks for the reponse.

Just curious what should I be looking for with
regards to the enclosure? I mean is the Vantec
Nextstar 355 the only one I can use? I was hoping to
find one a little cheaper than $69.
I'm new to Mac as well. I've only had mine about 2 months. As far as HDD Exclosures, you should be able to find an enclosure for less than $69. A couple things to look out for when buying an enclosure is to look at the drive size capability. I've seen enclosures that at in the $30 price, but some stop at the 200Gb size range, where the ones in the $70 range, will support the larger drives like 500Gb. Now, this isn't always the case, as I have seen some expencive enclosures that don't support beyond 200Gb drives.
Now, if you decide to buy the enclosure, and drive as seperate pieces, you're drive will most likely not be partitioned, or formatted, as this is normally the case with boxed Western Digital, Maxtor, etc... So you'd need to take care of that with the Drive Utility that's part of your Mac after it's in the enclosure and connected to the Mac.
As a side note, I was down at my local CompUSA and they had a 160 Gb External LaCie Firewire drive at $139.00. This was a better buy for me, as I didn't need to buy the components, didn't need to put them together, and was less money than buying a 160Gb drive and enclosure. The LaCie drive was formatted FAT32, which I quicly changed to the Mac Journaled File System.

  • What hard drive can I put in a touchsmart iq800? This is the 3rd time it's crashed.

I have a touchsmart iq800 with windows 7, 64 bit. This is the 3rd time I've had a hard drive failure in 2 1/2 years.  I am not too familiar with computer lingo and need to know what type of hard drive to get. I called hp and they wouldn't tell me anything because I'm out of warranty. I know I have a seagate. At this point, I want something entirely different. If someone could just tell me what name, #, etc of a hard drive, I can order one. I've installed 2 already and am getting good at it. Not sure if that's good or not! thanks in advance.

The iq800 appears to be a series number and not a model or product number. Please provide the full HP model name and/or product number of the computer in question for accurate assistance.

  • How can I change the name of a shared folder/hard drive hooked up to my airport extreme?

    Hello,
I was curious if anybody here may know the answer to the problem I'm facing. It seems like such an easy task, but I just can't figure it out.
I have an airport extreme a1143 hooked up to my network directly to my router via Ethernet. I have a USB Ext. HD connected to AEBS. When I click on the Airport Extreme in "Shared" under Finder on my Mac, it pulls up a little folder with people on it (meaning it's shared). It is my Ext. HD, but it's called "NO NAME".
As silly as it sounds, like it to be called something other than, "NO NAME". Does anyone know how I can change this?
    Thank you,
    Mike

Eject the drive, if is mounted on your desktop
Temporarily,  connect the drive directly to your Mac, and wait for it to mount on the desktop
Click slowly on the name of the drive, and you will be able to edit the name of the drive
Eject the drive and connect it back to the AirPort Extreme

  • Satellite M100-164 - what hard drive can I install?

    Hi,
I have a Satellite M100-164 ... its a middle-east version of the M100, pretty much identical to the European version as far as I can tell.
    (short model no psma0e)
I want to install a new hard drive. The spec says it uses a 5400rpm, Serial-ATA hard drive.
Can I just use any hard drive of that type, or are there other things to watch out for (e.g. drive depth, pin configuration?)
e.g. could I use this drive:
    "Toshiba MK2555GSX 250GB 2.5-Inch Internal SATA HDD"
... or should I play it safe and use one that explicity says its for the M100, e.g. this one on Ebay:
    "250Gb Hard Drive Toshiba Satellite L35 L45 M100 M105"
    [http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/250Gb-Hard-Drive-Toshiba-Satellite-L35-L45-M100-M105_W0QQitemZ190276248831QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Co mputing_HardDrives_RL]
    thanks

    Hi!
On SATA HDDs there are no capacity limits and you have on every HDD the same pin assignment. That means you can use every SATA HDD that you want and also SATA2 HDDs because they are downgrade compaitible so SATA1 standard.
However, you can buy the cheaper version from Amazon. This HDD should also work well in the notebook.
I hope I could help you a little bit.
    Bye

  • Which drives can power off on Airport Extreme?

Is there a list of external drives that are verified to be able to power down when used with airport extreme.

Is there a list of external drives that are verified
to be able to power down when used with airport
    extreme.
What do you mean? The AEBSn will NOT power down ANY USB disk connected to it. That is the expected behavior.
If a disk goes to sleep by itself, it will not be recognized again by the AEBSn until the station is power cycled or rebooted.

  • Do i need a powered usb hub to connect my external hard drive and printer to my airport extreeme

I tried a usb hub from Belkin that is not powered. Is this why I cannot get my hard drive to work on my Airport Extreme?

I am assuming that you are using the newer "square" version of the AirPort Extreme, not the older "round" version.
The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered. I have had to use a powered USB hub with any type of hard drive that I've ever used on the Extreme, even if the drive had its own power supply.
You might want to also check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or MS-DOS FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work at the AirPort Extreme.
