What is better to buy: MBP w 256GB SSD or MBP w Retina display 256 Flash D

I'm in the process of buying an new MBP (13 inch) and can't decide between the MBPro with 256 GB SSD or the Retina display with 256 flash memory.  Both come very close in price, but I'm confused about which is better.  I use my computer for internet surfing, word processing for work, and watching movies, in addition I have large music and picture libraries.  I'm also confused by the option of buying the MB Pro with the standard ATA drive which would give me 750 GB.  Isn't there more storage in this last mentioned version?  Too many choices!!

Given your use indications, I would opt for the non-retina macbook Pro with the 256gig SSD
The standard SATA conventional HD of course is larger, but external storage is VERY cheap. A 1TB external USB toshiba is only $65 retail.
The SSD is nice, I have both conventional and SSD.  SSD is very fast, boots extremely fast and is lovely on read/write speeds.
If youre not doing video or high end photo editing in mass, the Retina screen is nice. Ive owned a retina for several months. I still have a non-retina Pro.
750gig is MORE yes, but storage is CHEAP.    The SSD has a price premium. Basically its non-volatile memory (the SSD), meaning extremely fast and fast read/write.
yes, the SSD is much smaller, but youre getting the premium ultrafast boot times
Go for the SSD and spend $65 on a 1TB external USB.
You MUST (the general rule is) have a backup for your data regardless anyway.
Most importantly regardless of what you get, always always always backup your data (time machine backup) AND archive your valuable data (yet another external HD).
Mass internal HD storage has almost become an irrelevancy (as it should!).   Any laptop should never (and never should have in the past) be considered a data storage center,....rather a working platform. Keep all huge files not often used OFF the computer on external storage.

  • 256GB SSD Write Speed - Pro Retina 13" Only

    Hello,
For folks who have 256GB SSD on the MacBook Pro Retina 13", what is your Write Speed in terms of MB/s?  Please note that this is for 13", not 15".
Several reviews claim that 256GB should get around 700MB/s for Write, as well as for Read.
I just got my MBPr 13 yesterday and only installed iWorks, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, Flash.  All these only take about 5GB.  I then tested the SSD Write/Read speed using BlackMagicDesign Disk Test and this what I got:
    Write: 550 MB/s
    Read: 700 MB/s
So I am off by 150 MB/s and I am wondering if the slow down is caused by the 5GB software (iWorks, iPhoto, etc) that I installed after unboxing.  I can understand the slow down as SSD is filled up with more stuff but the amount of speed reduction only from 5GB of new software surprised me.
Or did I simply have a defective SSD and should return this to Apple for a refund or exchange?
    Appreciate your feedback!

The larger the SSD drive the faster they are. But you are confusing the reading speed with the writing speed. The SSD write/read speed for a 128GB MBA (2013) should be around 420/720 Mb/s.The larger 256 GB does provide the 700/700 Mb/s write/read speeds.

  • What is the normal shut down time for the mac book pro retina display (late 2013). Mine takes around 20 secs.Is this normal or should i be worried ?

Hi I got a new mac book pro retina display of 8G ram and 256GB ssd (late 2013 model). I was trying to shut down.It was taking around 20-30 secs.Is this normal? When i say shutdown i mean , i just login and shutdown.Do nothing else. I repeated the same process for 4 or 5 times. The numbers are the same.
The boot up takes around 15 secs. Are the numbers crazy or normal.
    Any reply would be helpful.Thanks.

  • Whats is better to buy today? Cinema display 30" or the new cinema LED 27"?

Hy friends, I'm new in the apple world. I bought macbook air 13", 2.13Ghz, 4GB, 256 SSD. i'd like to buy a big screen to use with it. I don't know if is better buy the new one 27" or one used 30" from my friend. What you think about it? I will use for use trade programs. You know if i can run at max resolution with macbook air? Thanks for all
    Mac

I agree with Rodrigo, I too was torn between the 27" and the 30". What really swayed me was going to the Apple store where they had both monitors side by side. I stood there for a while playing with both loading similar applications and evaluating which was easier on my eyes, etc. Even though the color on the 27" may not be as accurate (mostly a concern for photography professionals), it does make photos look rich and amazing. If you are going to watch movies on the display I'd say the 27" is definitely your best bet.
There are some discussions about the glare of the 27". They are right, the glossy screen does reflect quite a bit if you have a light source (like your window) behind you. I say pull the drapes if it's really a big issue and enjoy the benefits of a richer, crisper picture as well as all the other features (built in iSight, speakers, etc.) the 27" has to offer. It's no different than the screen on your laptop and you manage to live with that just fine.
For my Graphic Design work at the office I do still run two 23" Cinemas with matte screens as color accuracy is important. Having over-saturated blacks and richer colors can be an issue. For home use I'd much rather the 27" LED.
If you do go with the 27" LED there is one issue that seems to affect quite a few people (including myself). There is a problem with the sound going out requiring that you unplug the monitor and plug it back in to get the sound back. Apple has recently released a firmware update for the monitor which from my experience has solved the issue. So if you have sound issues just run Software Update and get the new firmware update for the monitor.
Lastly, I don't think I'd want to buy a used display. From my experience the cinema displays do degrade over time. The two I have side by side at work don't even match. One has a bit of a yellow cast and images seem to burn in quicker (not permanently, but it's irritating). They were bought at the same time but one was used more than the other. I tried calibrating both monitors but there's no way to make them match. One more reason to avoid a used monitor. If you really have to have the extra 3" I'd suggest saving up and trying to buy one of the last few "new" 30" Displays out there with a warranty.
Hope that all helps. Good luck in your decision, let us know what you decided on!

  • What is better to buy a ipad 2nd gen or laptop

what do you think is better an ipad or laptop?
what are the differences between them?
    Andjonny

What I use it for really doesn't matter, since how I use my iPad and laptop is probably not how you would use yours.
Since you just want generic advice, I'd suggest you do a web search for "ipad versus laptop". You'll find a number of sites that discuss the tradeoffs and avantages for either option.

  • What graphics card to buy for my PC so I can use target display on iMac?

    Hey,
Currently I have a ATI Radeon 5850 in my PC which I use to play BC2. I have my iMac which I use primarily, and a second screen next to it when I want to play BC2. I wish to get rid of the smaller screen and just use the iMac screen.
I understand that I can not use the 5850 with the iMac in target display mode.
What graphics card choices do I have so I can use it with the iMac in target display mode?
Is it just graphics cards that have Mini Display ports as standard? I know the 5870 Eyefinity edition works with target display mode, but this is outside of the price range Im looking for. Is there a solution for around £250 as I can always sell the 5850. I dont mind going Nvidia, Does anybody know if the GeForce 460/470 works with the iMac?
    Thanks, Simon.

Ive just saw that the new HD 6870 has mini display ports, and is in the perfect price range for me. Can anybody confirm that this card would work with target display mode?
    Thanks.

  • Is there a better version of photoshop that is not blurred in mac retina display???

    hi,
i own a macbook pro retina display and i use photoshop frequently.unfortunately photoshop cs 6 is blurred on my mac...initially i thot it was an installation error but the controls and the workspace on cs6 is blurred...
is there any other mac compatible (wrt. display) version of cs6??

Not yet... in August Adobe announced that a few of the apps in the CS6 would be upgraded to Retina-ready: Photoshop was amongst that group. I do know that it's still being worked on, but have heard nothing official from Adobe lately on when a Retina-compatible version would be released.
Hang in there... it's coming: probably 1st quarter 2013.

  • Which Macbook Pro should I buy: Refurbished Oct 2012 13.3" model with Retina display or the 2013 version?

I am a average user, watch a lot of movies, play music, word processing, lots of internet browsing etc.
I am currently considering the following:
Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.6GHz Dual-core Intel i5 with Retina Display
    Originally released October 2013
13.3-inch (diagonal) Retina display; 2560-by-1600 resolution at 227 pixels per inch
    8GB of 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    512GB Flash Storage1
    720p FaceTime HD camera
    Intel Iris Graphics
    OR
Refurbished 13.3-inch MacBook Pro 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 with Retina Display
    Originally released October 2012

    512GB Flash Storage
    720p FaceTime HD Camera
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
They are both roughly the same price.

I would tend to opt for the newer one.  Even though the CPU specs suggest that the 2012 is faster, from a practical perspective you will be hard pressed to notice the difference in 'real' world conditions.
    Ciao.

  • I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro for uni and I was wondering what the best type would be to get? One with retina display etc

I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro for uni next year and I'm not sure what type to get. I've heard different things about the retina display and that people only get it to edit photos etc but then people have said that it is quicker and makes the laptop lighter. I'm also unsure of how much storage I will need. If anyone can help that would be great!!

There are two screen displays available - Retina and non-Retina - and there's a world of difference between them. The Retina has non-user replaceable RAM and flash storage (well, the latter without voiding your warranty) and the non-Retina has user replaceable RAM and HD/SSD. And then, of course, there's the difference in the resolution of the screen itself... and a difference between the 13" and 15" screens (available in both 'flavors').
How much storage you need will depend on your needs.
I don't recommend the Retina models at this time - too many issues with tinting (on Samsung displays) and image retention (on LG displays).
So take a look at what the non-Retina machines have to offer - you can customize to your heart's content but remember that you can always upgrade the RAM and the hard drive in the non-Retina machines yourself.
    My 2¢...

  • 140TB of backup on a 256GB SSD ?

    Hello,
I have a 2015 13" retina MBP with 256GB ssd drive that has 140TB backed up on my drive?   I noticed it when I opened my "get info" for that drive, how is that possible? Is this a Yosimite thing?
I have removed all of  my trash, did a safe boot, removed all of my duplicate photos, removed my iPhoto trash.

My suggestion:  Clear the whole thing and just install Windows 7 on it.
If you feel you really might want to get back to 8.1, do a System Image backup to an external USB drive that you can potentially restore at a later time.
Trying to dual boot two different versions of Windows is fraught with peril.  It can be managed but you really need to know what you're doing.  It's better to choose one operating system and just optimize it to do all you need to do.

  • HELP! My MacBook Air sucked dry 142.5GB out of 256GB SSD space!!!

I use DaisyDisk and found out that I've lost 142.5GB out of 256GB SSD space being hidden as displayed in the attach captured image.
Can someone tell me how you resolve this issue and retrieve back the hidden disc space? Why are they hidden and used up so much of space? I do Time Machine backup every night I get back home. It never happen to my MacBook Pro... Pls help!...

Well, I went into the Disk Utility and veryfy the drive and the error messages appeared as per the attach captured image below:
I then restart the computer and hold down "Command+R" till the "Apple Logo" appears and releases the keys.
I selected the bottom most option (Disk Repair) and selected the volume and clicked "Repair Disk". Within 5 mins, the (green color) message reads "Your disk repaired successfully" and I gain back all my lost/hidden spaces to what I should be getting...
Kappy, thanks for your prompt reply. Really appreciated it. Cheers!

  • What is better: 256GB SSD or 500GB HDD 7200rpm?

I'm in the process of buying a new MBP and I have a dilemma concerning hard disk. I have had a 128GB SSD drive in my Macbook Air and I was very satisfied with it, but now with the MBP 256GB seem really a bit short for all my applications (Final Cut Studio etc.).
I was wondering if anyone had already gone through this decision process: is the 256GB SSD so different and better than a 7200rpm 500 GB, the latter certainly being more suitable to my need for space?
    Thank you for your help!

Be careful which 3rd party drive you buy.
