What is BOM(Bill Of Material) In Material Management(MM)

Hi,
i am part of Data Migration Project involving SAP And Peoplesoft Systems. We are doing Data Mapping Activity SAP as Target System And PeopleSoft as source system Now we are continuing with BOM (Bill Of Material) in MM Module. I have few doubts regarding Functionality of BOM Any one please Explain me what is Bill Of Material And What kind of Things it Deals WIth. Who Bills for the Material. Explain me some basic Things Abt BOM as i am a Technical Consultant i am totally Unaware of the Functionality Thanks in Advance.
Thanks

Hi ,
      Bill of material (BOM)
A list of all of the items that make up a product or assembly. The list has a formal structure and states the name, quantity, and unit of measure for each component. A comprehensive product life-cycle management solution should offer support for the following categories of BOM: feature and requirements structures, material BOM, document structures, equipment BOM, functional location BOM, sales order BOM, and work breakdown structure BOM.
Defining Bill of Materials
Use
Use the procedure to add and view Bill of Materials.
Procedure
       1.      Choose Production ® Bill of Materials.
       2.      On the Product No. field, press TAB to choose the item, which you want to define as a parent item, from the list of the Item Master records. You can also choose New on Choose from List to create a new master record.
If the parent item already has a Bill of Materials, the components are displayed. However, you can still create a new Bill of Materials for that parent item.
       3.      Select the relevant BOM type from the list as described in Bill of Materials Types.
Choose the Production type to be able to include the product in the MRP run and to process standard production orders.
       4.      Enter data for the finished product and the components. For details, see Bill of Materials Window.
If the BOM contains more than one component with the same serial or batch items; combine the items in a single component with the appropriate increased quantity. This will prevent possible errors in the batch or serial quantities.
       5.      Choose Add to save the Bill of Materials.
       6.      Choose OK.
Sometimes production gives rise to waste. If, for example, you manufacture the table, this process gives rise to sawdust.
You add sawdust as an additional component (by product). Enter a negative value in the Quantity field of the sawdust component.
When you complete and confirm the production of the desk, this component is put into stock. On the contrary, the rest of the components are removed from stock when you complete and confirm production.
Please reward if useful.

  • How to create BOM(Bill Of Material) item data from flat file?

I have two flat files one is BOM(Bill Of Material) header data and BOM item data. BOM header is already created, now I want to create BOM item data with reference to the header data. Is there any standard direct batch input method in LSMW or Is there any standard BAPI or Is there any standard BDC report program to do the task? CS01 is the TCode to create BOM.

    Hi,
The DI program works for create step CS01 and not for CS02.
Perhaps this ( adding items in header by Tx: CS02 ) could be achieved by a Recording step in LSMW.

  • Copy BOM Component Characteristic value in material PR created by MRP Run

    Dear Gurus,
My requirement is I have materials like thread to maintain color characteristic i have create class - color- class type is 023 , now i want user should able to maintain characteristic value in BOM component (thread) of semifinish material.  FG , SFG  are not having any characteristic.
Now in PR and PO we can maintain characteristic value in Material Data --->Configuration tab , Configuration tab will come only when there is tick in material is configurable at material basic data 2 view of thread and in CU41 I have to maintain material for class type 300 - Variant , then in class assignment i have select class type 300 and 023 both and maintain class , both are having same characteristic please make me correct if i am doing wrong process, if i am not maintaining class assignment 300 in CU41, in manual PO system not allowing to enter characteristic value in configuration tab . so i maintain both class assignment 300 and 023.
Now for manual PR and PO system showing configuration tab and from PO configuration tab characteristic value is coming in MIGO automatically but when i am running MRP for finish material the auto PR generated by system for material thread is not showing configuration tab in Material Data of PR. I have maintain characteristic value in BOM --->Extra--->Batch Classification. Please guide me how to archive this.
    Thanks & Regards
    Akshay.

    Akshay kukde,
Still i am unable to understand the reason for maintaining a characterstic value for a batch through BOM, I hope you are not changing BOM for every purchase order ?
can you explain what you expect by maintaing this one value for batch characterstic?
you can have many other simple option like
    1) Create a material with colour included in it ex, Thread_red, Thread _green etc and use them in BOM
    2) Use text in BOM to hold this discription for colour
    3) Use batch management, class 023 in material master classification , defalut value for colour, purchase order will be created and while doing GR you can change in colur if its different then default you set earlier.
    Akshay kukde wrote:
if i am creating PR Manually -ME51N , system showing configuration tab , where i can maintain characteristic value , which then reflecting in PO and from PO to MIGO
The above scenario I have tried by maintaining class type 023 and same characteristic in material Master. but result is same for auto generate PR by MRP- configuration tab is missing.
My requirement in this case is characteristic value should flow from BOM to PR generated by MRP.
when you manualy create PR you Thread material is consider to be a configurable material and thats why you are able to input configuration value, otherwise as soon as you put this configurable material inside a BOM of normal materila it loost its configuration feature, if you want you can create your parent material also as configurable material, assign same class to it and create configuration profile and take MRP run this time you will get PR with configuration tab as your thread get configuration derived from parent.
Hope above details may help you.
Check and reply, also mark replies helpful if it helps you.

  • What will happen if don't set follow-up material in material mas view MRP4

Client get the information that some materials will not manifacture until one date. After this date, client want this material can't create BOM or PO anymore.
I gave solution for set delete flag for this material so that when create BOM or PO error happens.
But client want to use discontinue material in material master view MRP4, so that he can enter the last date when this material is out of use.
Will discontinue material in material master view MRP4 can meet this requirement? enter discontinuation indicator and date then after this date will not create BOM or PO.

As per my understanding discontinuation is related only to MRP (how system handles requirements).
    http://help.sap.com/erp2005_ehp_04/helpdata/EN/b1/c044d1439a11d189410000e829fbbd/frameset.htm
If you want to disallow the creation of BOM / PrdOrd / etc, you have to apply to the suggested material status control or to your own solution (marking the material for deletion), etc.
n my opinion discontinuation makes sense if the real situation is also discontinuation (you have a real follow-up material). In this case you can use it to manage the requirements properly.

  • For STO with billing how to take material in plant stock without cancelling excise duty

    Hi,
Please suggest for STO with billing how to take material back in plant stock without cancelling excise duty.
    Scenario is
Material transffered from manufacturing plant to depot, material is in transit now, but due to some reason material calls back to manufacturing plant.
Since the excise invoice is raised and material move out of factory client can not cancel excise invoice from legal point of view & client has to pay excise duty for the material movement.
Please suggest how to take back goods to manufacturing plant without cancelling excise invoice.
We have suggested client as there is no provision to take back goods to manufacturing plant without cancelling excise invoice
and to take back material to manufacturing plant stock they have to cancel excise invoice and other related documents.
But client is asking for another options. So requesting you to please suggest any alternative ways for same.
    Thanks,
    Amit

client can not cancel excise invoice from legal point of view & client has to pay excise duty for the material movement
I don't think, there is a statutory rule which says, manufacturer should not cancel the excise invoice generated on their Depot plant.  Justification can very well be given to Excise authorities and hence, ask your client to follow the normal process by treating this as Depot returns.

  • What is the concept of  view in material master?

    Hello sap gurus
    Some quetions regarding Material Master
what is  the concept of views in material master ?
what is determined by specifying industry sector in material master ?
To sell material which views are material are maintened in Material master?
    Regards
    Amit

    Hi,
<b>Material master  for finished ggods is related with SD, MM & PP departments</b>. If you carefully go through the various screens in MM record you will realize the importance of the respective fields and the department to which they belong.
<b>1.Suppose Base unit of measure</b> in Basic data 1 screen. The production people will keep the stock of the item using this UOM.
<b>2. In Sales:Sales Org.1</b> screen we have sales unit in which we will sell the material.
<b>3. Then we have the plant</b> data in which we enter the delivering plant. Also the taxes are determined from the plant so we have the settings for taxes also - whether this material is fully taxable/50% tax/Tax exempted.
<b>4. Then we have purchasing</b> screen in which the data like the purchasing group, variable units, etc are entered. This will effect the purchasing cycle when we are procuring a material from outside. This is related to MM.
<b>5. The we have MRP</b>, this is related to PP as to how to manufacture the product, the MRP type, the strategy group - whether it is MTO/MTS like that.
<b>5. Sales:Sales Org.2 screen</b> - Here we mainatin the account assignment group which is very important as far as the generation of the accounting document is concerned. This triggers the system where to post the value in which G/L account. Accounting document is generated when we create the invoice in VF01 & save it.
<b>6. Work scheduling</b> - Related with the sceduling of the production as to whether underdelivery or overdelivery is allowed, the storage location
<b>7. Quality</b> - Here you can select for a particular finished item where where it has to be checked for quality during its journey from the raw material stage to the finished goods store as a finished item.
<b>8. Accounting</b> - Related to accounting, product costing, total value of the stock in hand, etc. Also related with FI & PP
So all the screens have data which effects one or more modules for the proper functioning of the system to give the optimum results.
    <b>Industry Sector:</b>
Key that specifies the branch of industry to which the material is assigned.
    <b>Use</b>
When you create a material master record, the industry sector you specify determines
    1. which screens appear and in what order
    2. which industry-specific fields appear on the individual screens
    <b>Screens for Sales:</b>
Sales:Sales Org.1, Sales:Sales Org.2. But other screens also have data which is related to sales. You cannot just maintain the sales views and save the master. It has to be properly linked with the other modules also for the proper functioning of the system. That is why the system is called as "Enterprise Resource Planning" You have to paln the resources of your company and these resources are related with all the modules.
    Reward points if solution helps.

  • What Changes should i do for taking material number in MM01.

    Hi ,
I am recording Material Master 'MM01'. In that Material Number is not taking numeric values. Automatically its generating one number for one record. But I want to give my own number to that material. what changes I need to do. I want to use that recording in BDC program.
    Plz..give me the solution.

That is due to functional settings. Here the internal and external no ranges are defined on the basis of material types.
Just go through spro tcode logistics general->material master->material types---> define number ranges for each material type. Here you can see a table control just check whether any material type is there with external check box as checked. Now at the time of recording just enter that material types which allows you to give a external material no( inside the defined range). Or just ask your functional.

  • 4.what accounts are generated for Non-Valuated material & for Consignment m

4.what accounts are generated for Non-Valuated material & for Consignment material?
    please explain me.

    Dear Srinivas,
Please find below the explanation about both materials in a simple manner.
      "Non valuated material".(UNBW):
For this material type in the basic settings only Qty. update is active & no value update.
No accounting data is maintained in Material master hence stock values are not updated. This material is procured only with account assignment.
Consumption statistic is updated only after Goods Issue.Whenever material will come its value will be always go to consumption account.
    Consignment Material :
In this case material is still owned by vendor & only kept in your premises. Liability only starts when you withdraw material from consignment stock or post it to your own valuated stock.Liabilities are generally settled monthly.
At GR wrt PO material is directly put to consignment stock of vendor. It is possible to post another GR into consignment stock. No valuation takes place during GR.
Once the material is withdrawn from consignment stock( For prod) it is valuated with the price of vendor in as per INFO record.

  • What is the difference between view and materialized views

    Hi
What is the difference between view and materialized view ? can we update the base table using views

can we update the base table using viewsYes:
    VIEWS
    1. an updatable view is one that lets you perform DML on the underlying table
(see Oracle Database Concepts 10g - 5 Schema Objects)
    2. non-updatable view requires INSTEAD OF Triggers
(see Oracle Database Concepts 10g - 22 Triggers)
    SNAPSHOTS
You can have updateable (and writeable) snapshots - in updateable (writeable) MV replication.
Oracle uses snapshots (Materialized Views - MV) for two different purposes:
    1. replication
    2. automated Query Rewrite facility (first introduced in Oracle Discoverer, later included in Oracle database 8i).
    Replication types in Oracle are:
    a) Basic replication (MV replication)
    - transaction based
    - row-level
    - asynchronous from master table to MV (Materialized View)
    - DML replication only
    - database 7 / 8.0 / 8i / 9i / 10g
    - Standard and Enterprise Edition
    1. Read-only MV replication
    2. Updateable MV replication:
2.1 asynchronous from MV to master
2.2 synchronous from MV to master
    3. Writeable MV replication
    b) Multimaster replication
    - transaction based
    - row-level or procedural
    - asynchronous or synchronous
    - DML and DDL replication
    - database 7 / 8.0 / 8i / 9i / 10g
    - Enterprise Edition only
    1. row-level asynchronous replication
    2. row-level synchronous replication
    3. procedural asynchronous replication
    4. procedural synchronous replication
    c) Streams replication
    - (redo) log based
    - row-level
    - asynchronous
    - DML and DDL replication
    - database 9i / 10g (10g has Down Streams Capture)
    - Enterprise Edition only (Standard Edition 10g can execute Apply process)

  • What is BOM? Steps Needed. How is it Related to Product Costing

    Gurus,
    What is BOM?
How is it related to Product Costing and Profitability Analysis and CO?
Technical help and steps would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Points available.

    Hi,
BOM (Bill of Material) is a structured list of components (with the object number, quantity and unit of measure) that go into making of a product or an assembly.
Bill of Material can be simple or complex depending upon the structure of the product. And, a collection of BOMs that lets you describe a product or a number of similar products is known as BOM Group.
    T code is CK51.
In product costing BOM is used to estimate the cost incurred for the creation of a finished product.
Technically, when u do a product cost run for particular material and if you don't have BOM for the material, the system will give an error.
    If useful, assign points.

  • Common BOM/Bill to Copy BOM/Bill

Is there any process to Copy a BOM/Bill to same local-Org if its already enabled as Common BOM/Bill.
    Here is the detailed steps:
    1) BOM/Bill# 800-123 exists Global-Organization.
    2) Go to Bills Of Material --> Bills select Org = Global-Org and query 800-123.
    3) From Tools --> Create Common Bill --> select local-Og = LO1
    4) Switch/Change Org to local-Org=LO1 and you can see BOM/Bill#800-123 as Common BOM here( cant edit but can see/read-only the bill, Header present in local and referring the structure from Global-Org, Bill-sequence-id from Global-org)
    5) At this point I want to change copy the BOM/bill to same local-Org = LO1.
    6) Go to Bills screen and give this BOM/Bills and click on Tools --> Copy Bill From. It showing error Bill Already exists.
    Business reason/Requirement:
During engineering/proto-type they want keep the BOM in Global-org and refer it in local orgs as common BOM. And Once its released for manufacturing, it should be a copy-BOM (complete BOM structure should be available in Local)
    Alternate Solution:
    1) Delete that Common-BOM/Bill and copy the fresh BOM/Bill from GLO.
    2) Custom code to change the bill-sequence-id and copy complete structure to local-Org.
    My Question:
Apart from this deleting option or custom-code option, do we have any out of the box solution to convert that common-BOM to actual Copy-BOM ???
    Thanks in advance / Praneeth
