What is involved in making a iphone app

Just curious, im trying to find out how much it would cost if i wanted to make a iphone app im concidering the following things.
A apple computer
B The knowledge
C The developement software
So can someone give me a example of how much it would cost to make a iphone app?\

I've been using Touch.OSC, from Hexler. It is not created by Apple but works like a charm on Logic. I've been using the app for over a year both on my iPad and my iPhone. Yeah, it would be cool if Apple included its own iPad/iPhone app to control LogicPro on a future update... but for the stick price of the apps I've mentioned you might have a good 'bang for the buck".

What is Apple doing to fix iPhone app failure

This problem looks like a bad MS conflict error... One of the biggest reasons I got away from PC.
I have a new (now 4 days old as of this posting) 3G iPhone with all updates. It has been registered with Apple and synced with my iTunes. I have loaded free apps on my iPhone with the reasoning being that if the free apps don't work, I surly will not buy an app from the designer of a non working free app.
I have done the reset and reboot, which "some" of the apps did work fine. But all, non standard iPhone apps, crash on startup following a sync section with iTunes.
Without claiming to be a programer or even a technician, it appears that the cause of the down loaded app failure stems from the sync with iTunes and maybe poor app design. Anyone from the PC world will recognize this as a "conflict error".
At the iPhone introduction Keynote address, I feel Steve Jobs lead me to believe that is would not happen with the 3rd party development of apps. It's just not the "Apple" way. I maybe wrong in that it is not an actual "conflict error" but something else, still, it is not what I have come to expect from Apple and hope that this problem is not a sign of the future with Apple. It also appears that better "quality assurance" is needed with app development and iPhone syncing.
My question is:
What, if anything, is Apple doing to solve this massive problem with downloaded apps and the iPhone and syncing with iTunes?
If someone could show me a link with an Apple reply to solving this problem besides reset/reboot/reload I would be a little more confident in knowing that I didn't waste good money and "TIME" in getting the iPhone.
This boot-reboot, reset, wipe it clean approach is not good, to much like living in the MS world, not Apple.

Going to the local Apple store this morning...
My problem is not uncommon as the board is showing signs of this happening to many others as well. That is where I found the restore and reboot information to try to solve the issue of crashing apps.
I understand that Apple will not "give away the cow", but letting iPhone users know that the problems they are having are being addressed by Apple is a little more comforting than nothing at all. Other wise, all the apps in world are useless and even more importantly worthless, if a person has to reset/reboot/reload just to get them to work.
IF Apple can not address the basic problems with todays iPhone apps, why should one believe that the iPhone 3.0 OS is any better? Using a PC comparison, which is better, XP or Vista. If the current iPhone OS of 2.2. what ever is not working that well (as related to down loaded apps and iTunes), will OS 3.0 be any better?
The waste of time I refer to is in going to the apps store and downloading the apps... Again why by apps if the free version does not work?

What is ranking criteria for top iPhone apps?

What is the ranking criteria used by iTunes for top iPhone apps -- premium and free? Is it just most downloaded? Also rankings are updated how frequently? Thank you!

"Top" apps are defined by number of downloads. Seems to be updated "live" (it changes more than once a day sometimes, and since it is based on number of downloads, it's probably an automated process).

1. Do I have to have a Mac and an apple OS to run the iphone SDK?
2. Do i have to know how to code or is the interface user friendly enough to let me make a very simple app e.g. a slideshow.
3. Do I have to pay the $99 to get me into the developers standard program to have any ope of my app appearing in the app store?
4.How do I open the iphne SDK-(It's a .DMG file)

Yes, you have to pay the fee in order to become an official developer.

DVD to iPhone App Encoding: what is the best workflow?

I am making an iPhone App. I take the video from a DVD.
Naturally I would like to obtain the best image quality for the smallest file size.
I know that the Compressor pre set for iPhone makes:
H.264, 640 x 360, Millions, AAC, Stéréo (G D), 44,100 Khz
So my guess is that I need to convert my MPEG-2 movie to a m4v, H.264, 640 x 360
This is the info of the DVD MPEG-2:
224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 7.50 Mbps, lower field
On one Mac (PowerPC), I have FCP 6.0, Compressor 3.0, MpegStreamClip 1.9.2, QT 7.2
On my other Mac (intel), I have QT 10
I can either use Compressor 3 or buy Compressor 4... I wonder if a QT MPEG-4 Export could do the job?
Of course the movie needs to be compatible (format and video data) to all iPhone iPod Touch and iPad models...

MpegStreamClip > ProRes 422 > Compressor > iPod Touch and iPad preset
The MPEG-2 is letterboxed 720 × 480. When cropping the letterboxed area via the geometry pane, I get a 640 X 380 (ideal for me)
Can I use this 640 X 380 size with the iPod Touch and iPad preset ? Will it show up fine on the iPhone 4 and other devices? Should I crop in a different size?

Iphone app development... GPS, UIWebView, and Cookies???

Hi guys!
I'm a total Newbie to macs, iphones and anything apple. I just got my iphone yesterday
Anyway, I really want to create an iphone app that views a website through the "UIWebView". (I'm sure you can do this)
Then, i want to somehow read the gps location of the device (GPS satellites only - if not avilable, a message will be shown) (I'm not sure if you can do this, i've seen gps info apps in the app store, so im guess its possible)
Then the bit im im not sure about... Would it then be possible to take the data from the gps, and save it with NSHTTPCookieStorage "setCookie", which im hoping would be accessible from the UIWebView with a javascript read cookie function (document.cookie)
Does any of this seem possible? Really hoping the last bit to pass the gps via a cookie to the javascript in the UIWebView. Or maybe if cookies cannot work, is it possible to post the gps from the app to a server side mysql database, and then read it via ajax in the UIWebView.
If this looks possible im going to buy a mac mini and really have a go at making a iphone app

IPhone apps folders

Does anybody know what is needed to see the iPhone apps folders, just like in the pic below?

Ubuntu natively does that, but I don't know what package I need to be installed in Arch to allow that. As you can see on the left side of the image, there are two mountpoints, one for the iPhone root folder and the other containing some of the iPhone installed apps.

I just had this happen this evening - I spent hours categorizing everything, had it down to a lean 4 or 5 screens, and had sync'd a few times. After the last sync, however, they were all reset to alphabetical, unfoldered order.
One odd thing I remember prior to the sync wiping the app layout is that I had one app that appeared to be installed twice - it was visible both in a folder and on the main screen in iTunes (I don't know if it actually appeared twice on the phone itself). I think it was AAA Triptik (couldn't tell you for sure, since everything after page 11 is missing, and that only goes up to 'R'). I clicked on the cross to delete one instance of it (from the main screen, not the folder) - this prompted me to uninstall the app. I was fine with that since I don't have any saved data - I sync'd and it uninstalled the app. Don't know if that's what also clobbered the layout. I then re-checked the app in iTunes and sync'd again so it'd get reinstalled.
Not looking forward to doing this again... :-/

Stopping user from making in app purchases on a live iPhone app

I am trying to stop user from making in app purchases on a live iPhone app. What i have done is i made Cleared for Sale: No in itunesconnect product id and Status is changed to Status: Developer Removed from Sale. But still i am able to do in app purchase in the app. Any idea why is it? anything i should do? Last Thureday night i have done this changes in itunes connect. i don't want to delete the product id from the itunesconnect.

I found an answer to this on another page (I was having the same problem) This worked for me:
Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.

I was looking at the "Find my iPhone" app and I have a doubt regarding how it works for the macbook. In order to detect the location, the macbook should remain signed into iCloud. What if the thief logs out of iCloud. Would we able to locate the macbook?

It should work fine for iPhone/iPad because we can enable "Restrictions" to prevent the user from signing out of iCloud. Do we have simialr settings for the macbook?

If it's not on the device list, it indicates that someone has gone to Find My iPhone on icloud.com and manually deleted it from the device list (as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmfc0eeddd), and it has not gone back online since (which would cause it to reappear on the device list; Find My iPhone has been turned of in settings on the device; the iClolud account has been deleted from the device; or the entire devices has been erased and restored.
Unfortunately, there's no other way to track the phone other than through Find My iPhone. You could call your carrier and see if they would blackliste it so at least the theif couldn't use it.

What to do if iPhone apps don't work after syncing with iTunes

Just wanting to share this with anyone who may have the same problem.
This is what I did: All I did was authorised my computer to transfer apps into my iTunes.

on the iPhone, go Settings-->General-->Restricitons and either turn all Restrictions off OR if they are on make sure 'Installing Apps' is ON.
