What is the easiest way to tell if your time capsule has backed up your hard drive, as my mac has been recalled for a replacement hard drive

Your views would be appreciatted, my imac has recently been recalled for a replacement hard drive, would it be easier just to purchase a external hard drive to be on the safe side for backing up my photos etc?
I have a 1GB time capsule but to be honest not sure how it operates it states it oldest back up is the 11th October
201GB of 998 available or would it best to buy a external hard drive and back up using this.
thanks
Benjoe08

You are very wise.. !!
It can be awfully hard restoring the Mac from TM.. as many posters here have discovered.
IMHO.. for certainty.. get an external drive.. they are not expensive.. do a full backup to it.
I would even download superduper and make a clone of the existing drive and boot from it.. this means when the Mac is returned if all else fails.. you can use the external clone as a boot and have exact OS as you have right now.

  • What is the easiest way to transfer iPhoto to Time capsule?

I currently have my iPhoto content stored locally on my MacBook and I would like to transfer everything to my Time Capsule.
Since there are over 30G of photos, every time I attempt to start the transfer, the time to complete is well over 1 day.  Any time the screen saver kicks in, the transfer stops.
Is there an easier way to do this?

If you decide to do this after reading below and double checking in the iPhoto support area.....
Turn off the screen saver on your Mac for the transfer.
30 GB should copy over in approximately an hour and a half if you are using a wired Ethernet connection.
But....before you do this....I suggest that you check with the experts in the iPhoto  support area for reasons on why you would NOT want to do this
    The primary reasons are:
    1) If you move the iPhoto library to the Time Capsule, it will be on a network drive, and you are probably using wireless. Any interruption during the time that iPhoto is reading or writing to the libary can corrupt the entire library and render it unusable. If you decide to do this anyway, the Mac should be connected by Ethernet to the Time Capsule whenever you will be using iPhoto to minimize the chances of a writing error.
    2) You have your "original" library on the Mac now, and likely your backup of the library on the Time Capsule.  If you are using Time Machine now for backups, and you move the "original" library to the Time Capsule drive......you have no backup for the iPhoto library when....not if....the Time Capsule has a problem.
The solution is to add a USB or FireWire drive to your Mac and move the iPhoto library to that drive. This is a "safe" way to use iPhoto, which you can verify by checking with the iPhoto experts.
Time Machine will now backup both your Mac and the hard drive. So....you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another separate drive.  When one drive fails, you at least have a backup copy on the other drive.

  • What is the proper way to extend 2nd generation time capsule network to 2nd generation Airport Express?

I have a Simultaneous Dual Band Time Capsule. Up until now, I have been extending the network with the Airport Express (2nd Gen, the 802.11n model). Since it was not simultaneous dual band, it was extending over the 2.4 GHz band so as it could extend b, g, and n and support my iPhone at 2.4 n as well as my iPad and MacBook Pro at 5 GHz.
I just bought the new simultaneous dual band unit, which theoreticalkly should be able to extend both bands.
Now, it is not that simple. I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on. I also still have the old Express which I have relegated to another part of the house.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule. Which one do I join? How do I know that both are extended? When I connect to the <SSID 5GHz> now my iPhone can see that one and connect to it, so I am assuming it is NOT going at 5 GHz.
And I have no idea at all what the guest network is doing....
Does anyone have any insight into tthe proper way to configure all the units, and what I can expect? My network is as follows:
                                                                                             Airport Express (Simultaneous Dual Band)
Cable Modem > Time Capsule (Simultaneous Dual Band) >
                                                                                             Airport Express (802.11n, last gen)
I want to run guest network (hopefully simultaneous dual band) and personal network. I want the new express to run both bands just like the Time Capsule, and for the old express I want to know which of the two bands I am extending.
    Thank You!

I also run a guest network, which I assume also gets extended when WDS is on
Unfortunately, the Guest Network cannot be extended.
When I set up the new Express, it asked me which one of the networks I want to join, either <SSID> or <SSID 5GHz>, the automatically generated name for the the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
This likely indicates that the Time Capsule has been setup to use separate names for the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, instead of the default, which uses the same wireless network name for both bands.
In order for the AirPort Express to be able to extend both bands, the Time Capsule will need to be configured so that both bands use the same wireless network name.
Then, configure the AirPort Express to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule, and it will extend both bands.  At least, that is the way an AirPort Extreme works, and I assume that the Express is the same. I don't have an Express here to test, but will in another day or two.
The location of the Express is important, since the 5 GHz signals are not as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. You may need to experiment by placing the Express closer to the Time Capsule than normal.  With an AirPort Extreme, I find that the Extreme must be located no more than about half the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you continue to use the previous model Express to extend as well, it too must be configured to extend the wireless network name of the Time Capsule. Configured this way, the Express will extend the stronger of the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz signals, so it will likely extend the 2.4 GHz band unless it is located close to the Time Capsule.
To find out which band the previous model Express is extending, locate a Mac laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. The info displayed will indicate whether you (and the Express) are connecting using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

  • What is the easiest way to burn data from a ext HD to an ext DVD drive?

I have a Maxtor Touch III with 2 partitions on it. I want to wipe the 2nd partition clean but it has data on it. I just bought a Plextor External DVD-DL drive. So what would be the easiest way to burn the discs? There is about 40Gb worth of data to burn and I have all kinds of backup utilities, (Retrospect Express, Intego's backup, etc....I will admit I am not well versed at using Retrospect, in fact the only way I know how to backup is by doing a Duplicate Backup. So what do you think?

I personally use Roxio's Toast 7 for all my burning needs, and it's the finest so far (also used DiscBlaze in the past). Click the "DATA" tab, and add whatever files you want to burn, that's it.
You mentioned you just bought a Plextor external DVD drive, is it the Plextor 716UF (USB/Firewire)? That's the same one i have and it's fantastic.

  • What's the easiest way to transfer all my pictures and music from my old PC to my new Mac?

I just recently got a Mac and wanted to know the easiest way to transfer my pictures and music from my PC to my Mac.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
The best and easiest way is by using Windows Migration Assistant. Apart from that, this app allows you to transfer other things, that you can check in this page > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4796 You have also the steps to transfer your data to your Mac in that page.
If you don't want to use it, just copy your music and pictures to an external drive and transfer them to the Mac

  • What is the best way to set up my time capsule with Existing Uverse

    Hello,
I have read through some of the threads regarding the co-existence of Uverse and a time capsule. But it all seems very advanced to me. Here is what I'm wanting to do.
I currently have Uverse. I have the box in my living room attached to a wall outlet, via Ethernet. I have 3 TVs, all with Uverse boxes. Wirelessly, I have several devices connected to the Wifi at any given time. An iMac, 2 iPads, a MacBook Air, 3 iPhones, Apple TV, an XBox and 2 smart TVs.
So my Uverse Wifi pretty much stinks. It's not bad right in the livingroom where the box is, but in my bedroom and office it's pretty poor. When I try to watch Apple TV in the bedroom I end up watching a lot of spinning as it waits to connect:(
I was told at the Apple Store that a time capsule could help with that in addition to creating a back up of my computers. Excellent! So I purchased it. But here is my issue. My main iMac, the newest computer with the most up to date software, is in my office. But my Uverse equipment is in the living room with the TV. So do I have to hook up an Ethernet cable to both the Uverse AND my computer from the Time Capsule? Because they are rooms away from each other:( Is ther any way someone can take me through this step by step like setup for dummies?:) I would be so grateful!
    Thanks!!

So do I have to hook up an Ethernet cable to both the Uverse AND my computer from the Time Capsule?
I'm not sure that I understand everything that you want to do and where devices will be located.
The Time Capsule must connect to the "main" Uverse router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. An Ethernet cable can be run up to 300+ feet with virtually no loss, so you should be able to locate the Time Capsule wherever you want.....unless you have a very large estate.
If you want the Time Capsule to strengthen the wireless signal provided by the Uverse router, then the Time Capsule must be located in the area where you need that additional signal strength.
If I understand your post correctly, you plan to install the Time Capsule in the office? When you do this, you can configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless signal that uses the exact same wireless network name and password as the Uverse wireless network.
That will provide a much stronger signal for your Uverse wireless network in the office area. Hopefully, the bedroom that you mention is close to the office, so it will pick up the stronger wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
The iMac in the office can connect to the Time Capsule using another short Ethernet cable connection, or the iMac can connect using wireless.  A wired connection is always preferred, if possible.
At this point, I guess the first question would be.......
Do you have a location for the Time Capsule that will be close to the office....and...the bedroom where you want a stronger wireless signal?

  • What's the easiest way to make a password system? 10 Duke Points!

    Hello everyone,
What's the easiest way to make a password system in java?
I'd like to be able to:
    1) store passwords for about 6 people.
    2) have the people only interact with my program using my Eclipse console with no GUIs, pop-ups or Swing code.
    3) let the people have the ability to create/delete their own passwords and logins. (ideally)
Having searched around the Internet, it seems that the options are to:
    A) have code that allows users create files, write to files, read from files.
    B) have code that serializes objects - this seems pretty difficult.
    C) have code that has a hash table of some kind - although I don't really know hash tables very well and am not sure if they can store data over time unless the program is always running (which is an option).
    D) use some sort of javadoc like PassWordCallback - this one looks the easiest as the code already seems to be there but I'm not really sure how to include this type of stuff in my code.
    E) have code that allows users to input their password, which I've given them on a piece of paper, and then allow the code to match it to a file - this wouldn't let the users create their own passwords though.
    Anyway, hope you can help!
I have a 'Head First Java' book and a 'Java for Dummies' book if you know of anything directly useful in these books.

Using GUIs and Swing is really easy, I have only been using Java for a week now and I have already made a simple application with events. First of all Swing is a package and you need to import it (as described in the documentation).
When you click on the Swing package in the documentation to the second frame you'll see JFrame when you scroll down. JFrame's are the main windows on your screen. JFrame is a class therefore it needs to be instantiated (making an instance of that class so we can use it). After all, everything is based around classes.
    JFrame frame = new JFrame("Title here");
Note: The "JFrame" before the frame vaiable name is the "data type" of the variable, really we're making an object type (I think its called) just like we'd do String frame if we wanted to make a frame variable that is of type String.
As explained in the [JFrame section of the documentation|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/swing/JFrame.html] in the "Constructor Summary" section is the different types of Construtors that are made available to us when we instantiate the JFrame class. One of the construtors available are:
    JFrame(String title)
... which is exactly what I did above in the brackets/parentheses (its telling us we can add a String title).
Remember constructors do not have any return type or anything and is not a method, because it is the same name as the class and when we instantiate we call the constructor. And so the JFrame class has many constructors, one is for making a title for our JFrame and another is just instantiating without a title. If there wasn't the JFrame(String title) and just JFrame() constructor, we wouldn't be able to add a title as we made an instance of JFrame.
So once we've made an instance of JFrame we have all the methods available (and all of the methods are shown in the API documentation).
Hope you understand now :).Wow. Thanks a lot bastones_. I think Swing is just a bit beyond me at the moment and will require quite a bit of time for me to master. Is there not an easier way of making a password system? I think that A (see above) seems the easiest for me at the moment and D (see above) would be nice if I could just figure out how to use the javadoc.

Yes, there's been no updates to 10.5.8 for quite awhile, next is paid Upgrades.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • What is the easiest way to assemble forms in Swing ?

    Dear friends,
Im doing a nice job with GridBagLayout, and my forms are well designed as well.....
but now I have to share my tasks with some other guys without swing experience... and Im afraid to teach GridBagLayout will cause more problems than productivity....
I have decided to use some framework or another layout manager,....
can you tell me what is the easiest way to construct forms in Swing ??
    best regards,
    Felipe Gacho

First off, make them learn GridBagLayout as well as the other layout managers (like BorderLayout). Have them play around with JBuilder's visual editor, making note of what changes visually do to the underlying code, etc. It will serve them well.
I have yet to find an "easier" layout manager that doesn't at some point tie your hands and end up making life more difficult. With GridBagLayout, BorderLayout and use of subcontainers, you can do anything you might need. :-)
    I wouldn't say absolute positioning is anti-Java.
It's certainly more work to deal with in most cases.
. You can always get the screen resolution and
adjust your sizes accordingly. It's still 100% pure
Java code. It is anti in that it doesn't follow the general spirit of Java. Yes it will be 100% Java code, but it will be at least 90% crap as well. :-) You then can't easily do localization, changes in the look & feel mess up your app, your components won't resize properly, any change to a label's text causes you to have to tweak everything, etc. Ghastly stuff. It is the lazy way to get the GUI to look like someones mock up, but that is all it's good for.
If you run across a GUI done with absolute positioning, you have my permission to give the responsible developer an atomic wedgie.

  • What's the easiest way to make a SOAP client request in java?

I need to make a request to a website that provides tv listings. Basically I just need to make a simple SOAP request for the listings and the site provides them in XML format.
What's the easiest way to do this? Do I need to download a package like Axis2 or JAX-WS? These seem kind of overkill for what I want to do, since I don't need to run a server. Is there something in the Java standard libraries that will do this? Is it difficult to just write the code for this my self?

I've been trying to do it with HTTP POST commands. Here is the sample SOAP envelope that the site gives:
    <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:SOAP-ENC="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/encoding/" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">

</SOAP-ENV:Envelope>I can post this to the URL and it gives me back a generic xml file as a reply with no listings. The problem is that the site requires credentials, so I assume I have to login somehow first. Can anyone tell me how I would do this?

    What do you not understand?
You can duplicate the iPhoto library (command - D ) and delete everything except the project and its photos from the copy and move that
    Or
However the calendar takes very little space - it is simpy database entries - it is the photos in the calendar that take space - and for most people you would wnat to keep those photos in your library
you can use a photo in 50 calendars and it still is only one photo in your library - as I explained calenders do not exist as such - they are simply database entries telling iPhotop how to display the calendar - they take almost no space at all

  • What is the easiest way to create and manage very big forms?

I need to create a form that will contain few hundred questions. Could you please give me some advise on what is the easiest way to do that? I mean for example is it easier to create everything in Word (since it is easier to manage) and than create a form based on that?
My concern is that when I will have a very big form, containing different kinds of questions and with many scripts, managing it during work will be slow and difficult, for example adding a question in the middle of the form which would require moving half of the questions down which could smash the layout etc.
What is the best practise for that?
    Thanks in advance

Try using Table and Rows for this kind of forms. These forms will have the same look throught with a question and and answer section..
In the future if you want to add a new section, you can simply add rows in between..
    Thanks
