What's going on with my USB drive?

I have a WD MyBook 2tb drive, one of several on my Mac Mini running Mountain Lion, and a few days ago that drive started making scritchy-scratchy sounds like it was being worked really hard when nothing at all was accessing it. That the drive access light isn`t flashing while this is going on is all the more puzzling.
So it has to be the OS doing something on it I would think, and doing a lot of it for some reason or another, but I have no clue how to find out what, or why. Okay, so the disk could be failing, and I`ve got it all backed up so if it goes I just go buy another disk, but this disk is less than a year old, and I have a WD 500gb disk that`s nearly 7 years old and it`s still going strong. Then too, I`ve run Disk Utility on it several times and it give the drive a clean bill of health, so WHAT????
I`ve tried using Terminal to find out what`s going on with that disk, but being a total idiot when it comes to Unix I`ve little idea how to look at that particular disk, and try as I might I cannot find anything online anywhere that tells me how.
So far I`ve tried iosnoop, which gets me a lot of seemingly bad messages that scroll endlessly up the screen saying things like:
dtrace: error on enabled probe ID 4 (ID 1031: io:mach_kernel:buf_strategy:start): invalid user access in action #3 at DIF offset 0
and this launchd stuff:
launchd ??/<unknown (NULL v_parent)>/<unknown (NULL v_name)>
This stuff just goes on and on and on and on... forever and never stops.
What does it all mean???? Is the drive dying on me? What if I reformat it? Would this stuff stop?

Is this a one-time occurence, or is it continuous?
Does the drive have a separate power source or is it bus powered by the Mini?

  • What is going on with my CD drive?

My CD drive makes all sorts of weird noises when I insert a disc in it. Sometimes it sounds like it's loading then slows down, then speeds up, etc. Then there are times were it'd make some other random rhythemic noises. I don't know what's going on. It doesn't like to read everything. But putting in another DVD is fine and will play ONLY if I'm lucky. Other wise, it just tries to read it and ejects. And on bad days it won't eject the disc at all unless I turn it side ways.....
Anyone ever experience this? My warrenty expired. To be honest if it costs too much to take to the Apple store I'm just going to live without a CD drive.

I dont know whats going on with it, but instead of having to live without a superdrive, you could purchase an external one that plugs into one of the usb ports for BOUT $55 USD.  See Here: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/VLU2SD22XLS/

  • What is going on with the Hard drives?

I purchased my macbook in Feb 2007. I've had two 160GB macbook hard drives corrupted (beyond any data retrieval) since then (and in the last year). I lost a great deal of PhD Thesis the first time.
Both times i had the screen freeze (unrelated to power since both were fully charged) and when I rebooted the HD could not be accessed. Seems to be corrupting the category B-tree in the catalogue. I have no idea what this means except i have no love for the B-tree. Off to mac repairers. Apple will not replace your HD without the old one which does create dramas when your old one is at data recovery.
I've learnt my external hard drive lesson (but always remember to back up your iTunes and iPhotos) since then but what's a reasonable expectation for your macbook to corrupt it's hard drive? Each HD took exactly 8 months to corrupt. coincidence? unlikely.
I have extra applecare protection cover but apple seem to think it's reasonable to replace the hard drive again and won't replace the macbook. I'm don't think that living in fear for the next 8 months is an appropriate resolution?
Is there an issue with macbook hardware that explains the HD corruption epidemic?

There have been some reports of a couple of runs of bad drives from the drive manufacturers, most reports being of Seagate drives, but I've seen nothing confirmed by any of the manufacturers. But all laptop manufacturers get their drives from the same vendors, so any vendor is equally likely to have a problem in such a circumstance. It's possible that your replacement drive was of the same series and so had the same problem, if such a problem really does exists. But laptop drives, being of very tiny parts, are more susceptible to failure; they're just not as robust as desktop drives, and of course are subject to more shock from travel. In my experience, support hundreds of laptops from various vendors, MacBooks are no more prone to hard drive failure than are any other manufacturer's system. So it could well have just been bad luck (presuming that the problem was indeed a hardware failure).
As to replacement, it's quite reasonable for Apple to just replace the hard drive again in the case of another failure, as there is really nothing in such a circumstance that would make replacing the entire MacBook help the situation.
Sorry you've had bad luck. I hope that your system behaves well from now on.
    Regards.

  • What's going on with my hard drive now?

Brief history: Not quite 3-year-old PB had internal drive fail last February. I bought the warranty, so it was pretty much paid for. Had a Seagate 100GB 7200rpm drive put in.
Today: Started up ProTools to do some recording, and everything is s-l-o-w with constant pinwheeling. Restarted. No improvement. Disk utility could not repair permissions. I restarted with the option key down, and the only drive that came up was the internal drive, and NOT the bootable backup drive (via SuperDuper!). Restarted with DiskWarrior in the rom drive, and (A) couldn't build a graph or (B) rebuild the directory (it said its speed was hampered by "disk malfunction."
I (obviously) turned it back on to write this, and was able to save an 82-page working document that wasn't updated in the last week. I'll keep trying to apply DiskWarrior and MacJanitor and DiskUtility and whatever else, but does it sound like my hard drive is toast again??
    Any help is appreciated.

Have you tried the Apple hardware test? Insert the first OS X disk, and reboot holding the option key. Choose Apple hardware test. What's it tell you?
Can you boot from the OS X disk? Reboot holding the C key down. If the Apple hardware test tells you you have an unrepairable issue, you can try an erase and zero on the drive (you have to specifically tell it to write zero's to the drive). Then restore your backup. But, before you take this drastic step, reset your PRAM, from the Apple note at http://discussions.apple.com/post!reply.jspa?messageID=4060048:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
I might even reset the power management unit (PMU). Turn the system off, take out the battery, unhook the power adapter, press the power button and hold for 5 seconds and release, then hook up power, reinstall the battery, and proceed.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro suddenly says no space available on start-up disk (plenty available) and USB drawing too much power (only charging phone). What's going on with my computer? No longer able to charge my iPhone 5.

    Hi, all.
Two days ago I was using my computer, a 2011 Macbook Pro, and suddenly got the error message reading "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using. Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help."
I was only using Google Chrome, nothing was running in the background, and I have 443 of 449.25 GB available (this is after clean-up I conducted after receiving the error message, but probably cleaned up less than 25 GB), so there should be no shortage of space. However, the message kept popping up and I deleted a few files and eventually it went away and hasn't reappeared.
However, last night and then again this morning I have been getting the error message that my USB drive is pulling too much power and has been disable. All that was plugged in was my iPhone 5 on the charger and my computer is also on its charger, so I don't know why this would be an issue, either. I have always charged my phone this way and never had a problem until today.
I haven't been able to charge my phone since. What's going on with my computer?

Regarding the USB, see if zapping the PRAM helps.

  • I/O timeout all the time on console - what can I do with my hard drive? Macbook pro late 2011

My macbook has been extremely slow for a while and after looking on this site I discovered I should look at the console - and noticed I had I/O timeouts all the time which I gather are a problem.
What can I do with my hard drive? If I back it up using time machine and erase the disk with zeros will the problem continue if I simply restore from time machine?
Or should I invest in a new hard drive - but if I buy a new hard drive is there something on my computer that will wreck that one as well? i use final cut pro/studio a lot and it's got to the stage where I can barely use it - do I need a 7200rpm hard drive? My current one is a 500gb 5400rpm.
I have 16gb of RAM in but since upgrading this from 4GB it made a difference to the speed for all of two seconds then the computer returned to its normal slow speed.
Would appreciate any help on this issue as I'm not particularly technical.

I wouldn't worry too much about what the Console logs are showing... although I/O timeouts, if related to reading/writing to your disk may be a problem. I would have to see the whole Console message to know for certain...
Your hard drive is sure to be slowing you down with FCP. Your best bet would be to upgrade to an SSD, if you can afford it. It's the only way you're going to see a real speed increase in FCP as so many large temp/cache files are written to the drive.
If you can't afford a SSD, you may want to look at a 7200rpm SATA III drive (if your MBP supports SATA III - which model do you have? 2011 or later, I'm assuming, since you note that you've 16GB of RAM?).
You should also update your OS to 10.7.5 if your profile reading of 10.7.2 is correct. Won't help speed, but will be more reliable -> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1582.

  • What's going on with iCloud 3/11/15?

What's going on with iCloud on 3/11/15? I can't sign in & asked over & over to log in. I need to get into iCloud pages to create a document. Same issues with iTunes.

iCloud appears to be mostly up now, but there's still some issues as reported storage is wrong and attempting to change storage plans results in an error.  icloud.com is saying I have no documents or Photos stored, despite the fact there is stuff stored in iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos, both of which are currently working.
I tried calling support, but they couldn't help me without a PIN that you need to get from appleid.apple.com and trying to sign into that site results in an errors, so there are major problems today.

I've reset this thing like 3 times now what's going on with it? why won't it connect to my iTunes?

Beyond resetting what have you tried?
Common fixes can be to use a different USB port or different USB cable. You can also try updating iTunes, or uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes.
Does your computer see it at all? Is there a little chirp when you plug it in?

What is going on with the quick keys in CC? Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop? The delete key only works when it wants to as well? We (Co-Workers) all use our shortcut keys A LOT and these will sometimes work and sometimes don't work. It only started when we downloaded the new CC. What's going on??

The Arial Font works on the MacBook Pro, but it is not listed on the iMac.
By not listed, do you mean it doesn't show up in the font lists of apps you're using, or it literally isn't on the hard drive?
Look in the /Library/Fonts/ folder. That's the Library from the root of the drive, not in the System folder or your user account. Is Arial.ttf actually missing?

What is your year and specs of your Mac Pro?
    How much RAM installed?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X and have negative effects on system performance.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac?
These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary.
    They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac.
These apps potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software company's that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!

The single download means that you won't be able to redownload it from the store without paying, either on a computer's iTunes or an iOS device - it doesn't stop you from copying the audiobook to your other computers or syncing it to your iOS devices, you just can't redownload it. (I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them requiring the one-time download.)
You can download audiobooks on your computer's iTunes and sync them to iOS devices, you do not have to buy them directly on the device (if you do then you can copy them back to your computer's iTunes library by connecting the device and using the File > Devices > Transfer Purchases menu option on your computer's iTunes).
What you are doing to sync them should work i.e.
    - connecting the iPad to your Mac
    - selecting the iPad on your Mac's iTunes
    - selecting its Books tab and selecting the audiobooks that you want to sync to the iPad and syncing/applying that selection.
You should then get an audiobooks option in the Music app on your iPad. If they aren't appearing there  then do they show in Settings > General > Usage > Music on the device - if you have audiobooks on the iPad then they should be listed there under an 'audiobooks' heading.
By 'restart the iPad' do you mean a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
You could also try closing its Music app via the iPad's taskbar : Force an app to close in iOS.
And do a soft-reset and retry syncing.
I assume that music and other items sync ok ?

  • Why does apple make it so difficult to understand what is going on with my one to one?

Does anyone have any answers for this? I don't even know where to list it here as a question.
Just spent over 2 hours, off and on, trying to get someone at apple to help figure out what's going on with my one to one. They give a number for help but there's no one there - only more gibberish about go here go there go all over the place on their site.... So called 'customer service' doesn't understand my question? Another place it says call the store, well that was another waste of time....
If I get a message saying my one to one is expired and then I pay for it via paypal, wait for the activation email. I sure don't want to pay for something I already have - that was my grocery money for 2 weeks.
When I click on that link it says:

  • What's going on with U-Verse in South Miami

For the past two months, we have been getting dropped signals (bundled U-Verse and including landline, mobile phone, television and internet) sometimes three times a day. I have had phone calls drop while speaking to my boss, (I work from home) favourite shows will all of a sudden give us that no service screen, which means we lose portions of the dialogue, and the internet stops working. I have not dared to call ATT as frankly the only solution that Customer Service seems to know is "Oh it must be your RG that needs changing." Well that's a load of rubbish since if it's the RG then ATT have some serious problems as I have spoken to at least six people that I know that also have U-Verse and they are all having the same problem, but kept thinking it was just them.
The internet signal has also got painfully slow and since we pay a juicy bill of $315 dollars a month and subscribe to the best package that U-Verse has to offer, I do not expect to have these constant problems. Nobody is perfect, and a little issue once in a while is acceptable, but not two to three times day! In addition... we receive an electronic bill and this has been a very hectic month for me, so realising that today was the 12th and I know that the bill is usually due sometime around this time of the month, and not having received a bill, I went online to investigate. Sure enough - on login to the payment page, it said "past due!" Well send me a bill and I will pay it. I just don't know what is going on with U-Verse but it is very distressing. I believe the saying is that they have, "Gone to ** in a handbasket." On a positive note - we can now apparently fast forward and rewind On-Demand TV shows, and which made no sense before that this feature was unavailable. However... this does not make up for the recent poor service and non-arrival of my electronic monthly bill, ( will have to go back to paper - not cool) and then having the nerve to tell me "past due."
[Per Guidelines:  Keep it Relevant and Appropriate].

Chris, As explained, and to be honest I am usually very long-winded and detailed in my explanations because readers miss things, as you might have done in this case. It is not my problem alone. Whenever we have a problem with any utility or especially in the case of ATT services, I always check with anyone that I know that uses the service and over a broad area, not just in my street but anyone I know in an approximate 8 - 10 mile area, to see if our issues are isolated just to us. If they are, then I know that it is most likely a piece of equipment we are using. In this situation, as there have been in others, every single person that I spoke to is experiencing the same situation. And again - this is why I said that I have thrown up my hands in exasperation and usually get another family member to call customer service if there is a problem, as I know exactly what they are going to tell me. "Let us check your line - (you then spend 45 minutes on the phone with them) No... everything seems fine, it must be your RG, you need to buy a new one." Mea culpa - I have no patience or time for scripted c.s. reps.  Two years ago, we had a lightening strike that literally struck the ATT box next door. The wires in all the boxes on the street (including the ones in our yard) were fused and black when the box was opened. And yet... when one of my neighbours (who apparently did not connect the lightening strike with the loss of service - sigh... what can I say...) called ATT, they got the same response. "No, we don't see any problems here, it must be your RG." Com'n! It was a lightening strike!  And on an aside - the new cable is now still hanging from my backyard fence as they were supposed to come back to bury it. Two years ago... So the dear space-cadet neighbours, paid for a new RG, hooked it up to find there was no reception (ya think?) and to then find out that theirs was just fine, and now there was the hassle of having to package the new one and take it to the UPS store to ship it back, and which is another frustration, because it is not possible to return it to a local store or office. Unlike yours truly, they apparently did not do their research with other users, even though we had no service for over a week.  So - by a process of survey and elimination, it cannot be the RG, unless everyone I spoke with is using the same RG. But there have been quite a few changes that we have noticed recently, ranging from new look menus, to those very beautiful images when first turning on the TV. So is it not entirely possible that in all the changes and tweaking, something else has been affected? Look it happens - but I can never understand why they can't just say,"Sorry, we are working on "upgrades" so we apologise but you might experience these little set-backs for a while until we are through." Why always blame it on the RG? Another way to make more money?
