What's in a Captivate 3 Template?

Our team created a template in Captivate 3. Our intention was
that Helvetica would be the default font for recording. When some
of my colleagues opened the template Helvetica is the default font,
when I open and record Arial is the default font even though I have
Helvetica properly installed in my fonts folder.
I tried an experiment. My intent was to transfer my knowledge
from my experiment to the problem at hand. So bear with me. This
approach to problem solving is a bit convoluted.
I set Arial Baltic as my default font in Captivate
Preferences. I then attempted to record. Bizarrely Arial not Arial
Baltic was resulting font. When I clicked on the font to look at it
after recording Arial Baltic wasn’t there, no indeed it was
Arial – just plain Arial. Now mind you I had gone into
Preferences and set Arial Baltic as the recording font for the
project. And I went back into Captivate Preferences Recording and
looked there it was staring me in the face - Arial Baltic –
the default font.
I performed this little experiment because I wondered about
font substitution and what might be happening with that. I
suspected that Captivate 3 performs font substitution when it
cannot find a matching font. But then I wondered why Arial Baltic
was available at all if Captivate if one could not record using
Arial Baltic. I thought the same logic would transfer to my
Helvetica problem.
I went into Preferences Recording Default and changed all the
fonts to Helvetica. Magically the Captivate template would record
in Helvetica. But then I wondered why have a template at all if you
couldn’t make the fonts specific to your project by using the
template. What I found astounding is that if you go into the
Recording preferences the Preferences actually appear to be
non-specific to the template – they appear in fact to be
Adobe Captivate 3’s preferences, not preferences specific to
the project – even thought “Project” is the
section of the preferences you are taken to and fill in.
What gives? Any ideas?:frown;

Hi there
I'm going to answer for Captivate 3 here. Captivate 4 brings new functionality with Templates.
Basically any project may become a template. You simply click File > Save As and save the project as a template. The primary objective of using a template is consistency. For example, let's say you wish to record a series of Captivate videos showing the user how to do different things using Windows Notepad. Beforehand, you know you are going to create several movies. You also know that you would like to have a standard look and feel to them. Perhaps you always start off with a specific title slide to announce what the movie is about. Perhaps you also always have a second slide that presents navigation instructions. And, of course you always want a conclusion and closing slide. Maybe you have a specific Skin that uses a specific playback control. You also don't wish to use a Preloader and you want to change how the movie starts and ends.
All of this may be configured in a Template. You then use the Template when you create new projects. The dimensions are pre-determined by the template. You record your actions and just sort of "fill in" the middle of the Template.
Note that one of the issues cited in the original post (OP) was a certain expectation that by setting the Caption styles and fonts in the template, you are setting them for the recording process. But if you read it carefully, the OP reveals that this isn't the case. During the recording process what ends up in the project is the choice made for your individual installation of Captivate.
As many folks seem to expect the Template to also govern the captions used when recording a Demonstration, it would make sense to see that built into the product. So please take a moment to suggest it to the Development Team using the Wish Form. (Link is in my sig line)

  • What do you use to edit templates?

I am new to HTML DB and I was wondering what you use to edit the templates to make the site look as you wish. I find the textboxes in HTML DB very annoying, especially since the page can scroll but the boxes too.
And there doesn't seem to be an easy way to preview what you made, so I was wondering if you use different tools to create and edit the templates.

    Hello,
Any texteditor can be used to edit HTML DB templates. Editors I know people are using range fro vi to Dreamweaver. If your a little lite on HTML or CSS knowledge a visual editor like Dreamweaver would probably give you a good start. You can play with your look and feel with static pages then cut up the resulting code to make your templates.
I personally use htmlkit http://www.chami.com/html-kit/ . It's not a visual editor but it's free and it has a bunch of features for coding html , css and js and even plsql.
as for your scrolling issue try adding this into the textarea's "HTML Form Element Attributes"
    style="overflow:hidden;overflow-x : hidden;overflow-y : hidden;overflow : -moz-scrollbars-none;" wrap="soft"
That suppress the scrollbars in some cases (works much better in IE than Firefox) but a textarea will inherently put scrollbars in when you add more text in than it can hold horizontally or vertically.

  • How to edit Captivate Handout template

I'd like Captivate 6 handouts to publish in a table that is left justified with the slide notes in the left column and background image in the right column.  I don't want any labels like "Slide 1 - Slide 1" or "Slide Notes."
    Header 1
    Header 2
Slide notes here without label...blah, blah, blah
Image from slide here at same size as in Storyboard publish
I've searched the internet for over 4 hours today and cannot figure out how to do this, including the Adobe discussion lists.  I found a link to a document on Creating Wordoutput Templates.  It has lots of tags, but no instructions.  I'm not a programmer, and the document was incomprehensible to me.
I found and opened each of the Captivate print templates.  The three that show coding are Word docs and none of them have a tag for slide notes.  I tried altering one of them and got an error when I tried to publish.  The template used for handouts has no coding that I can find or change.  When you use the table feature, the images are tiny and it creates multiple tables within the document instead of just one.  And, of course, it has the labels for slide notes and slide numbers.
Can anyone send me instructions or a Word template that can be used to do this?
    Thanks!

  • What is the difference between VI Template and vi that is reenterant?

What is the difference between VI Template and vi that is reenterant?
From what little info I can find about them, they seem to basically do the same thing....
    What are the difference?
What are the pros and cons of each?
    Thanks alot for the help.....

    Thanks,
OK, here's what happens when you call a VI Template using Call by Reference or using Invoke and Property Nodes.
Since the VI you are calling is a template, LabVIEW creates a new instance of that VI by creating a copy of it and giving a new name. Notice in the title bar of the instantiated VI the VI name is the same as the template VI plus a number. This is the same thing you see when you open a template from the "New..." menu. So if you call the template VI 3 times, you'd end up with 5 newly instantiated VIs named, "VI Name 1.vi", "VI Name 2.vi" and "VI Name 3.vi". This is how you end up with multiple instances.
Reentrancy only works on subVIs when they are used as a normal subVI in a top level application. Using Call by Reference or Invoke and Property Nodes to open and run a reentrant VI results in the VI only being opened once because LabVIEW will not automatically give it a new name. The new name is only generated when calling templates. Since LabVIEW can only a have a single instance of VI name in memory at a time, you'll not end up with multiple instances.
Not sure if I can help with the know issue on OSX. If it's specific to using the Call by Reference function, you could try calling the templates using Invoke and Property nodes.

  • Captivate 4 Templates

I'm creating a Project Template in Captivate 4 but my preferences don't save. For example I set my text captions to Dislplay for Rest of Slide and No transition. When I create a project from Template those settings don't apply. Does anyone else have this problem?

    nycbull2 wrote:
Yes this is happening to me as well...my preferences arent saved...wht the heck is it called a template for?
my custome toolbars and preloaders dont carry over either...
Adobe please respond and tell us what to do to fix this.
    thanks.
    Hi there
I tend to think about it like this. And it's quite literal.
Have you ever used a physical template? Stencils perhaps? Flowcharting Template?
Using these physical devices, did they provide everything you need? No they didn't. For example, you have to supply the paper the template is used upon. You also have to provide the pencil or pen. And the knowledge of how to construct the characters or insert the symbols.
I'm comparing the Captivate preferences to my paper color, size and weight choices and the pencil or pen choices.
This doesn't mean it will always be that way. If Adobe hears from enough folks about the issue of Captivate preferences not being tied to the template, they will do something about it. But that's entirely dependent upon how many folks submit the Wish Form and ask for it.

  • Captivate 3 Template Caption Cache Issue - Fixed in 4?

Well the title pretty much sums it up. We have learned that regardless of the caption preferences set and saved in a Captivate 3 project template, caption setting are overridden by the last set of caption preferences that were used. For example, I set the correct caption to be adobe green in my template, then saved and closed my template. Next I open a completely new project, use adobe blue for my correct answer caption, save and close that project as a seperate file. From here, if I open up my template and either work straight from it or import any other slides (tried it both ways), the correct answer caption will be adobe blue.
So here is the question, is this fixed in Captivate 4?
    Thanks

    Hi again
I believe in this case you are simply having a misunderstanding of how templates are intended to work.
What you want may be achieved by using a new feature in Captivate 4 called a Design Template. The fact we see Adobe added Design Templates probably attests to the fact that some users such as yourself found and expressed a desire as you have here. To easily influence content after it has been created.
I'd suggest downloading an evaluation version of Captivate 4 and testing to see if it meets your needs. If so, Bob's your uncle!

  • What is the max Captivate 5 project size?

What is the max allowed power point presentation size (including audio files and animations), if one wants to import it into captivate 5 and then published seamlessly?

    Hi Rick
Thanks for the info, and this is a big problem especially when you import from power point (the one I have is 160 slides complete with 450 MB worth of audio flies!!).
I also noticed that captivate uses a lot of RAM during import (at least 2-3 Gigs).
Any suggestions on how to publish this project or if you know anyone who could help me with this? the alternative is to return Captivate and get my $900 back

  • What is the workflow for creating templates in full FrameMaker and pushing them to XML Author?

    Hi All,
I'm working for a large organization (3000+) that is subdivided into 60+ business units.  I'm trying to figure out the workflow for using full FrameMaker to create a template that I can provide my business units to fill in via XML Author, send back to me, and then I can publish into a number of products using the Tech. Comm. Suite.  I am somewhat new to XML so I am not sure how to get my structure and format to translate.
Can anybody clarify what the general workflow would be for this process?  All I have been able to find is the flowchart showing full FM to XML to XML Author and back to full FM.  From my test driving of the Tech Comm Suite though it has not appeared that easy.
    ---Corey---

    Hi Corey...
Here's a rough outline of what is needed.
    1) First, you'll need to define the data model that your documents are using. This could be some existing model like DITA or a new custom model. Depending on the complexity of your document's needs, this may drive that decision.
    2) Once you've got a model, you'll need to create a structure application (in full FM). This structure application defines the model and appearance of documents. This will provide the fundamental structure of the "template" as well as placeholder text for the elements where you want people to provide information.
    3) Then you have to install the structure application on each of the XML Author installations. This involves copying the structure application definitions file (structapps.fm) onto the client systems as well as the structure application files (into the proper location as indicated in the structure application definition). The structure application definition may reference these files at a network location, which might simplify the deployment, but would require that each person is connected to that network in order to create the files (pros/cons with this approach).
Once that's set up, your XML Author users should (in theory) be able to create a new document using the new structure application, then send you the resulting files. Lots of hand waving here .. but that's the general idea.

I would always consider it worth logging the bugs.  They'll get routed through to someone.  But I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for someone to acknowledge the bug or give you a trouble ticket telling you when it will be resolved.  That doesn't happen very often on these forums.
Just log the bug and carry on.

  • What LapTop Spec for Captivate v5.5

    Captivate v5.5
Can I call on the collective knowledge of the technical brains reading this.
The laptop I currently use to run Captivate v5.5 is due to be replaced soon.
I know the Adobe gives details of the min PC requirements to run Captivate - but based real hands on working experience, what hardware and specs of hardware etc should I ensure my new PC has to ensure I get the very best from Captivate and dont run into any "resource" issues a little further down the road?
As I have an opportunity to tell my IT people what I need, I want to take the opportunity to get the PC set up "to the max" !
    Noel

    Hello,
Has anyone else (aside from me) encountered any problem using Captivate 5.5 in a Windows 7 64-bit machine?
I am using a  i5 laptop with 4GB RAM. Its just barely a week ago since I migrated from WinXP to Win 7 on the same unit.
I've seen a little difference upon viewing Captivate 5.5 ouputs generated from a Win7 (64-bit) and  a WinXP, specially with regards to the closed captions. As I dug around looking for possible reasons, I came across this item posted here:
"Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (Service Pack 3 recommended); Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1; or Windows 7 (certified for 32-Bit editions)"
May I just clarify what would this line mean - "Windows 7 (certified for 32-Bit editions"?
Does this mean Captivate 5.5 may not successfully work with Win 7 64-bit edition?
Thank you very much in advance.
    Best regards,

  • Setting up captions for a Captivate 4 template

I am trying to set up a new template based on a previously used file. I want to change the style of the caption. When i go in to the properties of a caption in my file and select Custom from the list, and then select the More folder, i select one of the YellowOne1 bitmap files. this is one of the standard ones that came with Captivate.
However, i would like the caption properties box to show all variations of this yellow color (e.g., with pointer facing up, down, left side, etc.). However, it shows only the individual caption type that i selected.
Is there a way to have all associated captions show up in the main captions properties window?

    Hi there
You can make this happen by opening Windows Explorer. Locate the More folder and copy all the associated files for that caption type from the More folder to the main Captions folder.
You will likely need to restart Captivate afterwards in order to see the variations.

  • What's New in Captivate 3?

    Hi folks,
Has anybody seen a new feature list for Captivate 3? I
checked Adobe's product page for Captivate. I saw a link there for
Features but I saw no list of new features. I also searched this
forum but my search terms (new, different, features) found no
    list.

That's almost a loaded question here after a few of the
threads floating around. You can read about the new features in
    Captivate there
    here.
You can also see a comparison of Captivate 3 vs. Captivate 2
    here.
Most people just recommend downloading the trial version of
Captivate 3 and trying it out for themselves.
You should also be able to do a search on these forums for
"Captivate 3" - there are several relatively long threads that you
    can read through. (
    Here
    are results for all forums).
    Good luck,
