What should I name my virtual machine?

I'm planning to build a virtual SQL Server in Azure.  Given that we'll likely want to build a new/replacement in 3-5 years (with whatever new OS and SQL Server version exist then), what should I name the server?
Before Azure, when we had everything internal at our company, we would name it, e.g. SRV001 and then create a DNS alias called whatever we liked, and then pointed it at SRV001.  And then, when we were ready to start building the replacement, we could
name the new one SRV002 and (when ready to make the switch) simply point the DNS at the new one.
But in Azure, I don't think I'll be using DNS.  Or will I?  If not, what do I do about the naming thing?  If I name this first one meaningful (and use the name in connection strings, etc), then I don't know what I'll do when ready to start
building the replacement down the road.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi,
In Azure, if you don't define a DNS server for a Virtual network, then the created VM would use the Azure public DNS server by defaut.
You can create a virtual network and then create a VM with a static internal IP address within that virtual network, then you can add the internal IP address of that VM as a DNS server for that virtual network. After that, you can add the DNS server
role on that VM and use it as a internal DNS server.
However, if you want to perform external DNS resolution, you also need to add an Azure public DNS server as a DNS server for the virtual network.
More information:

Configure a Static Internal IP Address for a VM

Susie

hi, my mac book pro, spotlight indexing process not compleate last 1 week. what should i do.. my machine speed are very poor. pls help

    System Preference/Spotlight/Privacy
drag your disk into the list, excluding it temproraily from the indexing procedure.
Restart your mac, and open the Privacy page again, click the disk and the minus button to re-incorporate it into the procedure and restart the indexing.
Or just try your luck in Disk Utility/First Aid/Repair Disk Permission first.

  • How to get Virtual Network name for Virtual Machine in Azure PowerShell?

I want to know what Virtual Network name is for specific Virtual Machine.
How can I get this through Azure PowerShell?

If this is SCVMM (since SCVMM has things called 'virtual networks') you would:
    $vm = Get-SCVirtualMachine -Name foo
$vm.virtualNetworkAdapters will display the VM network adapter objects.  Each VM Network Adapter object has a "VM Network"  and a "Logical Network" property.
So you can walk the chain of objects.

  • What should be excluded from Time machine backups?

I was looking at the Time Machine options and it is showing my external hard drive( Seagate) as being excluded from backups. Is that correct? If not, how do I correct. Seagate is grayed out & does not appear it can be changed. I recently added SuperDuper to my Mac, so not sure if that is the reason.
I appreciate any help to my question. Thanks!

    For some guidance see:

  • What Should I See Entering Time Machine?

I am using a Lacie 500 gig external drive to retain Time Machine backups. Everything appears to work properly. On entering Time Machine, I see only the contents of my 'Desktop' (except the Mac HD and Lacie HD) and nothing else.
Is this as it should be, or should I be able to access files/data not on my desktop?
In Time Machine settings, I have excluded backup of the Lacie drive itself, otherwise I have confirmed everything is actually backed up by examining the Lacie HD backup itself.
What if anything am I missing here?

With no open Finder windows and all other apps hidden, what I see when I click the TM icon in the dock is a column-view Finder window with Desktop selected in the sidebar, and receding windows backward in time. Is that what you see?
The if I click another sidebar item, such as my home (user) folder, or Documents, I see the contents of those directories, also with receding windows.
If you click the backward arrow in the Time Machine view TM will take you back to the last time there was a change in the selected directory, one change at a time, per click.

  • What should I name this???

Hi I came here to learn and pass forward what I have learned. I feel like I have learned a lot here. I have created several messages about my opinions. I have asked all members and advisors to comment. I have received no comments. I have read this members replies for a long time and to me he knows what's going on. I have exchanged PM's with him and I know that he is busy and can't be here on the forum as much as he would like to be. I'm probably totally out of line here, but I'm going to post this message any way and ask for comments one more time. Good or bad! Although these are not my replies, I believe them to be correct in every way. I have seen this message hundreds of times."I have a black screen. What Can I do??"
This is what you can do as stated by my friend cee_64, whom I hope will post here when he has time and correct me. Getting windows to boot may not be easy and might require some effort on your part. You can have software problems or hardware problems. The easiest way is to restore back to factory  to eliminate software, but if you have hardware problems, your not going to be able to do that. The biggest and most common problem for not being able to restore to factory settings is  the HD.  If it is bad, you will not go any where. Here are some things you can try. You can choose to believe cee_64; my friend, or the want to be engineer, who said the advisors here don't know any thing and to wrap your lap top in a blanket.
These are things that cee_64 recommends.
'This is a reply from one of our best advisors here on the Toshiba forum(cee_64)
Some computers will not be able to complete the POST with a bad hard drive. The symptoms of this happening is that you hear the computer powerup (fans spin) see some lights flash at the front of the laptop, but nothing shows up on screen. By taking the hard drive out it allows the BIOS to complete it's POST process. It doesn't always mean that the hard drive needs to be replaced (although it normally does), but it is an indication of where the trouble is. Removing the hard drive temporarily is just a diagnostic tool to help rule out other problems. Booting to a Linux LiveCD is another tool.  It allows one to determine components are working and which ones aren't. That's why it's suggested to try it. It's an easy test to do even for non-techies, especially for those who don't have other sophisticated test equipment.'
I may get in trouble quoting cee_64. He is my new hero.
The next step would be to remove the hard drive and try booting to a Live CD such as the first Restore Disk (that you hopefully made immediately after getting the laptop) or a Linux Live CD (I recommend either PCLinuxOS or Knoppix for this).  If one of those boots up correctly and you get an output to your screen then something is wrong with the hard drive.  Most likely either it died altogether or has become corrupted.
I welcome all comments.  When you have time cee-64 I would be proud to have your reply. I'm just Dokie being Dokie and trying to make a difference here I welcome all comments!

Hi! Bena! You have just made this old man's day. Thank you for your kind words. They make me want to keep helping Toshiba owners. There is seldom just one cure for a problem. It seems that each computer has a mind of it's own. Mine does crazy stuff all the time. Some times I think it has a mind of its own. I try to give advise that I think might work. My knowledge and advise changes dally as I'm always learning new things my self. Some times I seem grouchy, but I'm really just a old teddy bear. Welcome to Toshiba forum. There are some good people here.

  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager SC VMM 2012 SP1 Installation fails: Unable to assign the name NO_PARAM to this host because this name is already in use.

I'm trying to install VMM 2012 SP1 on a Windows Server 2012 machine and it fails with this error,
    the scenario is as follows,
Old database (from 2012 RTM) exists on remote SQL 2012 SP1 server
Server was 2008 R2 SP1 so I decided to make a fresh installation of 2012 with the same name
    installed ADK
specific error: 01:42:13:VMMPostinstallProcessor threw an exception: Threw Exception.Type: Microsoft.VirtualManager.Setup.Exceptions.BackEndErrorException, Exception.Message: Unable to assign the name NO_PARAM to this host because this name is already in
    use.
    please help

I had a similar problem today when upgrading from SCVMM 2012 RTM to SCVMM 2012 SP1 RTM. To re-create the issue you describe originally you can actually just uninstall SCVMM 2012 SP1 RTM with "retain data" option and re-install the software on the same
computer (with the same name of course), attaching it to the retained DB. If you change the SCVMM server name I believe it will make some things go wrong after your install, like missing VM template passwords for example as the data gets encrypted in
the DB. Maybe it didn't but I didn't risk it. I definitely know if you change service accounts on a scenario like this you will be without the encrypted DB data which isn't much fun. To avoid changing the computer name, if you look in the setup log
files in %systemdrive%\ProgramData\VMMLogs\, specifically the SetupWizard.log file. You will see details on it failing because the same computer name is in the DB table "dbo.tbl_ADHC_AgentServer" and until it is removed from that table I wasn't able to get
the install to complete at all. The error in my logs looked something like this "InnerException.Type: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException, InnerException.Message: Violation of UNIQUE KEY constraint 'unique_ADHC_AgentServer_ComputerName'. Cannot insert duplicate
key in object 'dbo.tbl_ADHC_AgentServer'. The duplicate key value is (computername.is.writtenhere). The statement has been terminated." In the row data in the DB it also seems to suggest that the computer name had "Virtual Machine Manager Library Files" on
it which is strange since I always remove the local SCVMM server as a library server after I install it and use an off box library server.

  • Deploying driver to a vmware virtual machine.

Iam trying to deploy a KMDF sample to a virtual machine using VS 2012. I followed the instructions in the msdn page for deploying drivers to virtual machine.
A named pipe was created in virtual machine settings. I added the host pc's name in Driver->Test->Configure properties and Project Properties>Driver Install->Deployment.
I am not able to connect after pressing 'F5' at the host computer. I get these messages.
1>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\V110\Platforms\Win32\ImportAfter\DriverDeployment8.0.targets(69,9): error : Kernel mode drivers cannot be deployed to the local machine

1>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\V110\Platforms\Win32\ImportAfter\DriverDeployment8.0.targets(69,9): error : Could not connect to the remote computer for deployment.
1>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft.Cpp\v4.0\V110\Platforms\Win32\ImportAfter\DriverDeployment8.0.targets(69,9): error : Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
One problem I could I see is that my host pc is on my company's domain and the virtual machine is on a workgroup that was created by default. Please let me know how to fix this issue.
Also should I add the virtual machine name or the host pc name at Driver->Test->Configure properties and Project Properties>Driver Install->Deployment.  I have added the host pc name.

Okay, got it. I think automatic deployment doesnt work when VM is the target.

  • Dadenie virtual machine based on Linux 5.7

Linux Operating System is installed on a virtual machine that is deployed on VSphere 4.0. On the virtual machine deployed database Oracle 11.2.0.1.
The other day there was the fall of the virtual machine with the database. First, the process was killed DBW0 respectively, and stopped the database.
After that, after some time the process has caused vmmemctl oom-killer, and the operating system to hang.
Tell me because of what might fall in a virtual machine and in what direction to dig. Download the database is minimal. In this night it did not loaded.

It looks like you are experiencing low memory exhaustion. The kernel uses low memory to track allocations of all memory. When low memory is exhausted, it doesn't matter how much high memory is available, the oom-killer will begin killing processes to keep the server alive.
I suggest you check your host and guest memory usage and allocation in VSphere, and make sure it supports your guest systems. Chances are probably that you do not have enough physical RAM to perform the tasks, or do not have enough memory allocated to your virtual machine, or have a process in your guest system that causes memory starvation because it is not configured correctly, e.g. Oracle SGA.

  • Virtual Machine Additions in Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.2

I'm also new to Virtual PC for Mac and will try some of the suggestions for speeding it up; it is painfully slow. However, I have another but related question.
I keep getting a prompt when I boot Windows XP Prof. and it opens Virtual. It tells me that after I see my Windows desktop, I should install and update Virtual Machine Additions from the PC Menu. My problem is, I can't figure out how to do that. When I'm in Windows, I've explored everything I can find......Menu...Control Panel...Applications, but I can't find anything that shows Virtual PC running so I can't get to the menu that should take me to updates. When I open just Virtual from my Mac desktop (w/o opening Windows) it checks for updates on Virtual PC for Mac but not Virtual Machine Updates. Neither can I find anything on Machine Updates when I search Apple or this support site. When I search Yahoo, it says I have to be running it to update....kind of full circle with it.
Can anyone help re: how to do Virtual Machine Addition Updates? Thanks.

Oops...tried it again..new problem. When I open Virtual, this is the message I get. When I boot from Windows it works........
    "OS not found
Install an OS on this hard drive
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device"
Think I'll uninstall and re-install e'thing from the Virtuall PC for Mac CD. Hate to do it.......just spent a long time y'day doing 17 security updates.
Maybe reinstalling I'll be able to do Machine updates.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell searching on hostname

    Dear,
I’m a starter with PowerShell scripting an I’m looking for a script to create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell. The idea behind the script is that when I run the script its first searching for the hostname. I’m migrating 24 locations and each
location have a different hostname like xxx-SRV001. The script needs to use the first 3 signs from the hostname in this case “xxx” and create 2 VM's with below info:
    Virtual Machine 1 2048MB
    Virtual Machine 2 4096MB
    Location D:\VM\
I can create VM's with Powershell into Hyper-V so only a script to first searching for the first 3 characters of the hostname is enough.
    Example:
It's the intention that when the script runs it's looking for the hostname. As example we have hostname 000-SRV001
If the script see the first 3 characters of the hostname, in this case 000 he need to create 2 VMs with name xxx-SRV002 and xxx-SRV004
I think it must be something with
    $hostname = "Get-WmiObject -computername $Machine Win32_Computersystem"
But then when i'm asking for $hostname he must give me back the hostname and if the hostname is 1 of the 24 locations then he need to create 2 vm's in Hyper-V with above info.
Can you help me or do you have a script for this?

    Juste use :
    $vram = 1GB*$vRam
    You not need the "
Do you have any error with the creation of the VM?

  • Custom Domain name for Azure virtual machine using azure websites

Hie, I am using a cloud service (e.g cloud1) and it has a hosted VM in it (Windows server 2012). It is having a URL cloud1.cloudapp.net. So I want to use the domain name (e.g azuresite1.azurewebsites.net)created from azure.
So how do I add the Cname record and everything in this setup .
      I already tried to use
    this but that didn't work
What additional steps are required to add custom domain name to an azure virtual machine and, the custom domain name is also an azure website

If you want to use azuresite1.zurewebsites.net then i think, you have to create a azurewebsite. If you have a custom domain then following should work.
You have findout the IP that is attached to the VM.
Point your domain name to that IP (using domain dashboard)
Now your domain points to whatever the site hosted on the VM (port 80)
If you have more sites then, you have specify HostName for the site which you want to use with domain name.
Try and let me know if this helped.

  • I have updated my iTunes to the newest version, 10-25 on a windows XP system. Now my java virtual machine is not working and I need it to run applet window. My Java is also newest version. What can I do to fix/repair my issue?

    Please help, Thanks

If your library was working on your computer and then popped up empty all of a sudden then this might be what you need...
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Installing Acrobat 9 Pro on a virtual machine on my Mac using Parallels.  Not an upgrade but being asked what I upgraded from.

I'm installing Acrobat 9 Pro for Windows on a virtual machine on my Mac (running Parallels).  I successfully installed the same program using the same discs on the same Mac previously, but that virtual machine became corrupt and can no longer be launched.  For this re-installation, the installation sequence is asking what version I upgraded from - but as this is not an upgrade, I get stuck at that step and am unable to complete the installation.  What should my next step be?

    Hi Akselowner,
This error usually comes up if the serial number you are using is an Upgrade serial number.
In such a case the installer will prompt to enter the previous qualifying version serial number.
Please send me a private message with the serial number and I will validate and confirm that for you.
If you do not have the previous qualifying version serial number then the current serial number needs to be unlocked.
Please contact our customer service so that they can do the needful for you. You can even reach our chat support at http://adobe.ly/yxj0t6
