Dadenie virtual machine based on Linux 5.7

Linux Operating System is installed on a virtual machine that is deployed on VSphere 4.0. On the virtual machine deployed database Oracle 11.2.0.1.
The other day there was the fall of the virtual machine with the database. First, the process was killed DBW0 respectively, and stopped the database.
After that, after some time the process has caused vmmemctl oom-killer, and the operating system to hang.
Tell me because of what might fall in a virtual machine and in what direction to dig. Download the database is minimal. In this night it did not loaded.

It looks like you are experiencing low memory exhaustion. The kernel uses low memory to track allocations of all memory. When low memory is exhausted, it doesn't matter how much high memory is available, the oom-killer will begin killing processes to keep the server alive.
I suggest you check your host and guest memory usage and allocation in VSphere, and make sure it supports your guest systems. Chances are probably that you do not have enough physical RAM to perform the tasks, or do not have enough memory allocated to your virtual machine, or have a process in your guest system that causes memory starvation because it is not configured correctly, e.g. Oracle SGA.

• Recognizing hardware from a Windows virtual machine hosted on Linux

Hi,
I would like to isntall windows in a virtual machine run from linux, and run my labview vi's and do aquisition from there. I tried once using a virtualized Windows XP 32-bit on ubuntu 64-bit, with Virtualbox, but the windows installation didn't recognize my PCI-MIO-16E-4 card. Maybe its because I didn't have the linux drivers installed.. I don't know. Soon I will begin using a the 7853R FPGA with the PXI-1036 Chassis, and would prefer if my virutalized Windows installation could see this hardware.
Has anyone gone through the steps of using NI hardware from a virtual Windows installation? Either Virtualbox, Xen, Vmware, or whatever..
Thanks,
-Sidney

Hi Sidney,
I see that this thread is a bit old, but I still have something to add. I know for a fact that VirtualBox, VMWare and VirtualPC won't let a guest OS see any real PCI card installed on the host computer. However, you might have better luck with Xen. There are options in Xen which allows you to pass PCI devices forward to guest OS's. People have gotten pretty far with using PCI forwarding that they have even managed to run Windows Vista with full hardware acceleration with Aero as a guest operating system. The only requirement is for your CPU to have virtualization support, i.e. the vmx or svm flag. The only catch is, Xen is significantly harder to set up.
I haven't tried this myself, and I am not from the LabVIEW group, and I am by no means authorative on this topic (don't let my signature fool you).
If you manage to get this to work, we would be interested to hear from you!

• VDI - RemoteApp does not start in "Virtual machine-based desktop deployment" environment

Hello dear community,
I would like to familiarize myself to the subject of desktop virtualization and have built up a test environment for this purpose. Most went smoothly, but now I'm trying for days to figure out, why the deployed RemoteApp programs in my test environment not
start. Unfortunately posts here and in other blogs were not helpful. I hope you can point me to the right direction. :)

Setting up the environment
The installation of the environment I made as mentioned in the following blog post. http://blog.itvce.com/?p=1569 But with only two physical servers.
What does work?
Prepared with SysPrep and "cloned" Windows 8.1 VMs created in the collections of virtual desktops are accessible via WebAccess (RDWeb) using IE, FF, Windows Start menu and also from the iPad as a complete desktop for authorized users/groups. The VMs
wake up in Hyper- V from the saved state and roll back to it after the user logs off. So far so good.
What does not work?
Now to what does not work. One collection of virtual desktops I have reserved for the publication of RemoteApp programs. So this new collection - like the above - was created. The VMs were built and successfully registered in AD. Then I used "publish RemoteApp
Programs" wizard in the collection. The available programs were successfully read from the VM. WordPad, Calc and Paint I used for the test. The programs/apps will then appear in RDWeb.
In RDWeb I now click on the Calculator, the warning described in many blogs appears that resources are passed through and then that the certificate could not be verified. Although I have already added the certificate to the trusted root CA in the user and the
computer area, I acknowledge that I would like to connect despite the certificate error with "Yes".
After about 20 seconds the "Connect to ..." window disappears and that it was. In Hyper-V Manager the corresponding VM does not move even if it's running. If the VM was not running and in saved state, it is at least started. But the Calculator will
still not start.
Can anyone give me a proper hint what to do, which Bing, Google and Technet did not have?
Thank you in advance!
Kay
PS: Since I am from Germany, I have asked the question first in the German forum. Unfortunately, without success.

Hi Kay,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft.
From your description, I learnt that the issue you are experiencing is that you want to eliminate the certificate warning when launching the Remote App applications. Please let me know if I misunderstand your purpose.
Firstly, please let me know what certificate you are using. Then please export and import the certificate on the RDSH server. We need to manage the certificates. Please refer to
the steps below.
1. Open the Collections which you want to manage, click
Edit Deployment Properties.
2. On the Certificates page, select
Select existing certificate.
3. When the
Select Existing Certificate page appear, please select Choose a different certificate, locate to the right exported certificate path, and type the correct password, and
select Allow the certificate to be added to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities certificate store on the destination computers.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to finish the certificate configuration, here we can use the same certificate.
If anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,

Hi
We are unable to identify objects inside the virtual machine. We want to perform some tasks inside the virtual machine. The virtual machine object is getting identified as image. So when we perform tasks like creating a folder or opening any application
inside that virtual machine, all actions are recorded as image.Need help on this ASAP.

Based on your issue, could you please tell me what operation you do and then get the error message?
Whether you record and run this coded UI test and then get the error message?
If possible, please tell me more detailed message about this issue.
Generally, I know that if you want to identify objects for coded UI test, I know that the
recorder needs to be present in the machine on which you are trying to record actions.
For more information, please refer the Vinoth's suggestion to check this issue.

• RMI server crashing the Virtual Machine

I am writing an enterprise RMI service at work and it has been crashing at seemingly random points and in-frequently. It is not actually crashing as such, because I have added a shutdown hook and that is getting called before it exits. I know for sure that it is not a system.exit() call because I have prevented all system.exit() calls in the security manager. I also have put in very tight memory management and an extended heap so I don't think its a memory issue either. Frequent calls to freeMemory() show that there is no memory leakage and that everything seems to be being cleaned up correctly.
I am using the IBM 1.3 virtual machine on a linux box for the server and thus the calls to the garbage collector are working nicely and when requested.
The crashing is happening at seemingly random points and I have covered all my public methods with try....catch blocks that catch Throwable, and it doesn't seem to be an exception. Code that 19 out of 20 times will run fine, crashes on the 20th run etc.
What I am wondering is - has anyone had similar problems and do you know how to fix it?
My other thought is that perhaps it is a problem with the IBM virtual machine, and I am thus going to try running things through the Sun 1.3 virtual machine to see if I get any different results.
Any insights or help from people developing similar services would be greatly appreciated (this is the first RMI service I have implemented).

YES!!! I finally solved it..........
I put the monitoring code into the startup script - incidentally, on linux the shell variable is $? as opposed to $status.
Then I let it run and this morning it exited again and the error code was 130 - or Control-C.... This made no sense to me as the service was running on a linux box which I was monitoring through a telnet window on my Windows PC. And I know for sure that I wasn't pressing Control-C.
After talking to someone else at work I found out that they had heaps of problems running a resin server in a similar way (through a telnet window), and in the end it came down to the telnet window was sending things it shouldn't to the resin server and causing all sorts of problems. As soon as they ran it in the background, the problems disappeared.
So I ran it in the background and the problem has disappeared. Instead, to monitor the service I just did a tail -f on the log file and every half hour or so the tail program running through the telnet window was just dying mysteriously...... ha ha ha ha
Thanks a lot for your help EJP, I wouldn't have been able to sort it out without your suggestions. And I have learnt a lot more about RMI in tracking this bug down. Only problem is that the clients were here for a demo last week and had it exit once while they were running the client app......arg!!!

• Jvm-java virtual machine

Hai iam new to this forum and as well i just started to learn java iwant to know in brief about JVM
i think it may be silly question but as i am bigginer to java kindly expect reply

georgemc wrote:
faustofrancis wrote:
A Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is a set of computer software programs and data structures which use a virtual machine model for the execution of other computer programs and scripts. The model used by a JVM accepts a form of computer intermediate language commonly referred to as Java bytecode. This language conceptually represents the instruction set of a stack-oriented, capability architecture.
Java Virtual Machines operate on Java bytecode, which is normally (but not necessarily) generated from Java source code; a JVM can also be used to implement programming languages other than Java. For example, Ada source code can be compiled to Java bytecode, which may then be executed by a JVM. JVMs can also be released by other companies besides Sun (the developer of Java) -- JVMs using the "Java" trademark may be developed by other companies as long as they adhere to the JVM specification published by Sun (and related contractual obligations).
The JVM is a crucial component of the Java Platform. Because JVMs are available for many hardware and software platforms, Java can be both middleware and a platform in its own right — hence the expression "write once, run anywhere." The use of the same bytecode for all platforms allows Java to be described as "compile once, run anywhere", as opposed to "write once, compile anywhere", which describes cross-platform compiled languages. The JVM also enables such unique features as Automated Exception Handling which provides 'root-cause' debugging information for every software error (exception) independent of the source code.
The JVM is distributed along with a set of standard class libraries which implement the Java API (Application Programming Interface). The virtual machine and API have to be consistent with each other[dubious – discuss] and are therefore bundled together as the Java Runtime Environment.
Execution environment
Programs intended to run on a JVM must be compiled into a standardized portable binary format, which typically comes in the form of .class files. A program may consist of many classes in different files. For easier distribution of large programs, multiple class files may be packaged together in a .jar file (short for Java archive).
The JVM runtime executes .class or .jar files, emulating the JVM instruction set by interpreting it, or using a just-in-time compiler (JIT) such as Sun's HotSpot. JIT compiling, not interpreting, is used in most JVMs today to achieve greater speed. Ahead-of-time compilers that enable the developer to precompile class files into native code for a particular platform also exist.
Like most virtual machines, the Java Virtual Machine has a stack-based architecture.
Although the JVM was primarily aimed at running compiled Java programs, other languages can now run on top of it[1], such as:
* Ruby, with JRuby
* JavaScript, with Rhino
* Python, with Jython
* Common Lisp, with Armed Bear Common Lisp
* Groovy
* Scala
[edit] Bytecode verifier
A basic philosophy of Java is that it is inherently "safe" from the standpoint that no user program can "crash" the host machine or otherwise interfere inappropriately with other operations on the host machine, and that it is possible to protect certain functions and data structures belonging to "trusted" code from access or corruption by "untrusted" code executing within the same JVM. Furthermore, common programmer errors that often lead to data corruption or unpredictable behavior such as accessing off the end of an array or using an uninitialized pointer are not allowed to occur. Several features of Java combine to provide this safety, including the class model, the garbage-collected heap, and the verifier.
The JVM verifies all bytecode before it is executed. This verification consists primarily of three types of checks:
* Branches are always to valid locations
* Data is always initialized and references are always type-safe
* Access to "private" or "package private" data and methods is rigidly controlled.
The first two of these checks take place primarily during the "verification" step which occurs when a class is loaded and made eligible for use. The third is primarily performed dynamically, when data items or methods of a class are first accessed by another class.
The verifier permits only some bytecode sequences in valid programs, e.g. a jump (branch) instruction can only target an instruction within the same function or method. Because of this, the fact that JVM is a stack architecture does not imply a speed penalty for emulation on register-based architectures when using a JIT compiler. In the face of the code-verified JVM architecture, it makes no difference to a JIT compiler whether it gets named imaginary registers or imaginary stack positions that need to be allocated to the target architecture's registers. In fact, code verification makes the JVM different from a classic stack architecture whose efficient emulation with a JIT compiler is more complicated and typically carried out by a slower interpreter.
Code verification also ensures that arbitrary bit patterns cannot get used as an address. Memory protection is achieved without the need for a MMU. Thus, JVM is an efficient way of getting memory protection on simple architectures that lack an MMU. This is analogous to managed code in Microsoft's .NET CLR, and conceptually similar to capability architectures such as the Plessey 250, and IBM System/38.
[edit] Bytecode instructions
Main article: Java bytecode
The JVM has instructions for the following groups of tasks:
* Load and store
* Arithmetic
* Type conversion
* Object creation and manipulation
* Operand stack management (push / pop)
* Control transfer (branching)
* Method invocation and return
* Throwing exceptions
* Monitor-based concurrency
The aim is binary compatibility. Each particular host operating system needs its own implementation of the JVM and runtime. These JVMs interpret the byte code semantically the same way, but the actual implementation may be different. More complicated than just the emulation of bytecode is compatible and efficient implementation of the Java core API which has to be mapped to each host operating system.
[edit] Secure execution of remote code
A virtual machine architecture allows very fine-grained control over the actions that code within the machine is permitted to take. This is designed to allow safe execution of untrusted code from remote sources, a model used by Java applets. Applets run within a VM incorporated into a user's browser, executing code downloaded from a remote HTTP server. The remote code runs in a restricted "sandbox", which is designed to protect the user from misbehaving or malicious code. Publishers can purchase a certificate with which to digitally sign applets as "safe", giving them permission to ask the user to break out of the sandbox and access the local file system and network...
[edit] C to bytecode compilers
From the point of view of a compiler Java bytecode is just another processor with an instruction set for which code can be generated. The JVM was originally designed to execute programs written in the Java language. However, the JVM provides an execution environment in the form of a bytecode instruction set and a runtime system that is general enough that it can be used as the target for compilers of other languages.
Because of its close association with Java the JVM performs the runtime checks mandated by the Java specification. This can make it technically difficult to translate C code (which is much more lax with regard to runtime checking) to the JVM and expect it to run without issuing any warnings.
Compilers targeting many different languages, including Ada and COBOL, have been written.
[edit] Licensing
Starting with J2SE 5.0, changes to the JVM specification have been developed under the Java Community Process as JSR 924[2]. As of 2006, changes to specification to support changes proposed to the class file format (JSR 202[3]) are being done as a maintenance release of JSR 924. The specification for the JVM is published in book form,[4] known as "blue book". The preface states:
We intend that this specification should sufficiently document the Java Virtual Machine to make possible compatible clean-room implementations. Sun provides tests which verify the proper operation of implementations of the Java Virtual Machine.
Sun's JVM is called HotSpot. Clean-room Java implementations include Kaffe and IBM J9. Sun retains control over the Java trademark, which it uses to certify implementation suites as fully compatible with Sun's specification.

• Can I install Linux and then use the original Windows 8 OEM product key for a virtual machine on the same computer?

I have ordered a new laptop and expect to receive it in 2-3 weeks. The laptop comes with an OEM version of Windows 8 installed. I wish
to install Linux as the host operating system and create a virtual machine running Windows 8. Can I legally use the product key from the OEM installation to activate a virtual machine that will only be used on the laptop that had the original OEM installation?
If so, what is the procedure to activate the copy installed on the virtual machine?
This question has been addressed for Windows 7, but my searches did not reveal this question posed for Windows 8.

Technically, no. The OEM is licensed only for the physical hardware on the system. It isn't licensed for virtual hardware.
You may find you're unable to activate your OEM license in the VM. A lot of OEM Windows look for specific hardware to verify they're being installed on the correct hardware.
Although here: http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/Pages/support-faq.aspx#fbid=Zh0SiBdas5I
Q. Can I install OEM on a virtual machine (VMware)?
A. You may install OEM in a virtual environment as long as you have a separate license for each instance of the software. It is fine to use the OEM version as long as it is properly licensed. To be clear, a separate version of software must be installed
for both the “standard” and “virtual” installations.
You still may not be able to activate if there is a hardware block.
The best place to ask this is to Microsoft licensing, any response you get here, including mine, won't hold up since it's not an official answer.

• Not able to connect Azure Linux Virtual Machine with Putty

Hi,
I am not bale to connect Azure Linux Virtual Machine with Putty... Error shows "Network error: connection timed out".
Please help.
Thanks,
Techsol
Thanks, Kk

Hi TechSol01,
Thanks for posting here.
I suggest you to try the below steps
On a computer running a Windows operating system, you might want to use an SSH client such as PuTTY. For more information, see the
PuTTY Download Page.
On a computer running a Linux operating system, you might want to use an SSH client such as OpenSSH. For more information, see
OpenSSH.
If it is the endpoint configuration, you can go to the portal and add port 22, (it should already be there by default).
Now if it is locked out of the VM because of the firewall on the VM, which is called iptables , You won't be able to connect to the VM,
If you haven’t configured the port 22. You may have to follow the below steps :
A = Original VM (Inaccessible VM)
B = New VM (New Temp VM)
1) Stop VM A via the Azure management portal
2) Delete VM A BUT select “keep the attached disks”
3) Once the lease is cleared, attach the Data Disk from A to VM B via the Azure Portal, Virtual Machines, Select “B”, Attach Disk
4) On VM “B” eventually the disk will attach and you can then mount it.
5) Locate the drive name to mount, on VM “B” look in relevant log file note each linux is slightly different.
grep SCSI /var/log/kern.log (ubuntu)
grep SCSI /var/log/messages (centos, suse, oracle)
6) Mount the attached disk onto mountpoint /tempmount
df -h
mkdir /tempmount
mount /dev/sdc1 /tempmount
df –h
7) Now you should be able to clear the rules set from the configuration file of the firewall, by accessing it
through /tempmount
Let me know if this works

• Installing Oracle Apps on Linux Virtual Machine, but need patch "6078836"

Hello Friend's,
Hope you are doing well...!
I start my EBS Training in a functional role in less than 10 day's.
My dilemma is that i am having a heck of a time installing Oracle Apps on my machine. As recommended in many blogs, i've installed a virtual machine environment and then installed Linux Version 5 Update 5. Before i begins installing Oracle apps, the last step is to go to my oracle support "mos" and install patch 6078836, which i can't access. It seems to me as if that one should either have a paid oracle support account or be a part of an organization/company that has one. I can't get past the sign in page to install this patch and no where in these blogs does it say this.
Does anyone have this patch or has access to it or any knowledge or idea as to where can i find this?
As a back up i've started downloading Oracle apps for a windows server machine as well, in case i am unable to download this patch at least i have a back up. And the bad thing about this is the fact that i am in India and the bandwidth here sucks even with a 2 MB plan. With these speeds this 50 GB download will take another 3 to 4 days. And time is of the utmost importance for me right now..
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated..
Thank you all in advance and hope that you have a great weekend..!

Does anyone have this patch or has access to it or any knowledge or idea as to where can i find this?Even though any of us has the patch we are not supposed to mail it as this violates Oracle support agreement policy.
There is no other source to get the patch and most Oracle patches (if not all) can be downloaded from MOS website.

• Oracle Linux 6 installation FAILURE on VMWare virtual machine

I just downloaded OEL 6.0 x64, created a new VMWare virtual machine (I have many VMWare VMs running various flavors of OEL 5) and did an installation. It all seemed to work fine. I was just testing, so I didn't do any customization. It finished, and looked good, just like all the other ones I've done. I clicked "reboot", and it did. Or it tried to.
It did boot from the disk, but after about 15 seconds, it said:
No root device found
Boot has failed, sleeping forever.
I retried the installation using a fresh VM, and even let the installer check the whole DVD first. Same result.
Anyone installed OEL 6 to a virtual machine on VMWare ESX?
Any idea what the heck could be wrong?

The problem is:
The Red Hat compatible kernel includes the vmw_pvscsi driver whereas Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel doesn’t. The kernel that the installer boots first does have the drivers, which is why everything is set up fine until UEK tries to find the root volume. It's an issue we plan to address in an updated kernel.
For now the workaround is:
When creating a new VM in VSphere, do not pick Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 x86-64 as the OS type but use Oracle Linux 5 x86-64 (or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5). ESX will then expose the LSI logic scsi controller to the OS and the 2.6.32-100.28.* kernel will work.

• Activation based license not recognized by Virtual Machine (Vivado 2014.4)

Hi,
I am using an VirtualBox to host a Ubuntu 64-bit Linux machine. And I have a Vivado node-locked license. In the first time, when I tried to generate license and used it with the machine, everything went well. But then I returned the license back to Xilinx, so that I can generate the license again for any other machine.
Then, the time comes to me that I need to use my Linux VM again. After generating the "Xilinx_license.xml" file via the Xilinx licensing website, the VLM refuses the license with the message:
Then I tried using command prompt to process the license, but I got the foolowing output:
di@di-VirtualBox:~$ xlicclientmgr -p ~/Downloads/Xilinx_License.xml
ERROR: API function 60009 failed, result 51308
Request generated on a different machine
Response processing failed.
The response is not valid for this machine.
Exit(4) error when processing response.
So I am now stuck in a state that I have a license generated, but I cannot use it, and I also cannot return it back to Xilinx. I need some help from Xilixn technical support.
A list of my questions:
- what did I do wrong so that such an error occurs? ( I was able to use my VM and Vivado without any problem for the first time)
- how to make VLM recognize this license again?
- is there anyway to get myself out of the stuck-with-the-license state?
Many thanks in advance.
Regards,
Di Cao

Hi ,
The Virtual Machine has never been removed or changed.
I merely returned the Xilinx license that was once assigned to this Virtual Machine some days ago, and today I tried to generate a license again for the same Virtual Machine.
Somehow the VLM does not recognize the license.xml at all, and I am now stuck with this license that can neither be recognized nor be returned.
Is it possible to un-do the current generated license and allow the Xilinx licensing site to generate a new license again?

• Networking arch linux virtual machine networking

For a project, I've got an arch linux virtual machine running on the school network. The image has SSH installed and that works just fine, the problem is that the network admin didn't give it access to the internet (so I can access it only over lan). What I would like to do is run updates on it and install several libraries that I need for deploying a web application (rails). The easy way to install them is obviously through pacman, which leads me to my question: Is there a way to make a network interface on the server that would use ssh to make a bridged connection to the internet?
Not super sure if I worded that correctly, but it seems that it ought to be possible to have a network interface on the vm that, when the vm opens an ssh connection to some ssh server (on the lan) allows the vm to use that connection for more than just ssh.
Thanks.

I was making this too complicated... I set up a squid proxy on a different machine and it all works well.

• Creating a Linux virtual machine on dynamic vhdx file creates huge file on formating

Hello,
we just created a virtual machine on Windows Server 2012 R2 on a dynamic vhdx file.
When the operating system (Redhat 5) formats the filesystem (100GB of size), then the vhdx file expands to 21 GB, although no data is written to the disk.
Did someone experience a similar issue? And how to avoid such space waste. If we write additional data in the virtual machine, then the vhdx expands again and gets even bigger then the 21 GB.
Thanks,

"So RedHat itself supports the virtual machine, but Microsoft not?"
Depends upon how you define the word 'support'. Microsoft has never supported any Linux operating system in the manner that it supports software it has written. In this case, support means providing fixes to the software code. That is pretty
standard across the board. RedHat does not support Microsoft applications or software, either.
However, if you mean the Microsoft supports the running of the RedHat operating system within Hyper-V, the answer is yes. In those cases where it is not obvious that a problem is occurring in Microsoft's integration components, it will work with RedHat
to determine where the error lies. If the cooperative effort between Microsoft and RedHat determines the problem is with Microsoft code, Microsoft will fix (support) it. If it is determined that the problem is not with Microsoft code, RedHat will
make the determination as to whether or not to fix (support) it.

How is the performance of Mac Pro if i use it as host for windows and linux virtual machines.
I am planning to buy a high performance PC to run my Windows and Linux servers as vitrual machines for my testing purposes.
Initially i planned to build my own computer with recommended configurations but considering space constaints and cooling factors i think Mac Pro can be a choice. But need some inputs if Mac pro (Intel Xeon E5, 12 GB RAM) is good for running virtual Machines.

You could even run Windows natively and still run your VM servers.
I have seen reports and such on MacRumors and elsewhere - run Windows natively as well as VMs (can also do testing and run Mavericks in a VM under Mavericks)
The fast internal PCIe-SSD, plus 6 or 8 cores, and 32-64GB RAM. Of course for $5,000 for 8-core, some Thunderbolt storage and 32GB/64GB RAM you can buy some serious hardware.
