What to do about iTunes files constantly disappearing?

Often, and more and more recently, when I go to my iTunes folders to burn a CD one of more
selections in the playlist are suddently "lost" (I'm a performer and a composer, and I often make CDs of my own works for demo). These are from Sibelius files, that I have to convert into AIFC format with a program named WireTap Pro, because Sibelius files are not properly formatted to convert directly into iTunes. (Does anyone know of a better way to do this than WireTap Pro?) Today I want to burn a couple of CDs and the first playlist contains 4 of 17 numbers that are somehow "lost" in the program. The only way to get them back in is to convert the Sibelius files once again to AIFC and then drop that icon into iTunes. This has often happened and now more and more.
Perhaps related: when the WireTap file is created, Quicktime opens although I DO NOT WANT THAT
TO HAPPEN! I think I've done everything in Quicktime preferences to prevent the program from
opening when I insert a CD, for instance, but these files are created within my G4, so the goddam
Quicktime keeps opening. As well, these AIFC files take up LOTS of space, so when I have dropped
them into iTunes I take the desktop icons to the trash.
SHOULD I NAME THESE FILES SOMETHING OTHER THAN .aifc WHEN THEY APPEAR ON THE DESKTOP?

Are the files truly lost or just that iTunes has lost track of them? I occasionally find iTunes has lost track of a file but I can use Spotlight to find it again (if it isn't in some logical location since I don't have iTunes automatically consolidate my music). If the tracks are misplaced you can re-associate them when iTunes asks you if you wish to do this when trying to play a track. If files are randomly disappearing from your computer you have bigger issues than iTunes not finding something!

By being gone do you mean the library is not in your Pictures folder or when you open the library you don't see any photos or thumbnails? If it's the latter apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

What to do about disconnected files?

I have used Photoshop Elements 9. A few months ago, many of my pictures became disconnected (11,2261 of them). Around that time we had severe thunderstorms -- I wonder if I lost the pictures as a result?
Their thumbnails still appear in my organizer but with a yellow question mark in the upper left hand corner.
I have always preserved the photo files on back up disks as I went along.
I recently bought PSE 11; the program instructions say that I should convert my catalog from PSE 9 .
I am unsure how to proceed --what I should do to preserve the information about these pictures?
What is the best way to proceed without messing up the new program?

It's important to understand that you get missing files when you move, rename or delete pictures outside of the organizer. You can't reconnect deleted pictures, for renamed ones, you would have to reconnect each file individually... So the reconnect feature is mainly useful for moved pictures, particularly when a whole folder has been moved, either voluntarily or by accident. An extreme case is when you have restored a full backup made on an external software on a new drive or master folder (changing OS for instance).
If you have to restore a number of files by searching in a your computer with tens of thousands of pictures in thousands of folders, your first task should be to able to specify the 'exact folder you want to check', otherwise the automatic global search may take many days...
So the advice is to look in the organizer at the location where the catalogs expect the files to be, and to search via the explorer/finder where the real pictures are in the computer. Then you can tell the reconnect dialog where to begin the search. In that case, the reconnection is very quick.

Alright. Here's my sad story. When I go to turn on my iPOD, I get the little apple icon. It then goes to a "File Error" screen (the little folder with an exclamation point). I've tried to fix it, I went through all the little things that apple says to do. But, better yet, MY COMPUTER ISN'T WORKING! So, naturally, my iTUNES isn't working. I cannot get iTUNES to read my iPOD, and I cannot get my sisters computer to read my iPOD. What can I do?

Take it to the nearest Apple Store and let the staff there format the iPod on one of their Macs. Take it home and re-format it for Windows by downloading the latest iPod updater and run RESTORE.

About iTunes File Size

In the finder my iTunes folder is just under 20 gigs, but according to iTunes I have about 13 gigs of music with only a few small videos, etc. Where is this 7 gigs going?

Possibly to the application itself and any artwork you've added?

Were the cards bought in the same country that your iTunes account is based ? Have you contacted iTunes support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ ? These are user-to-user to forums, so if you have only posted here then Apple won't be aware.

Does anyone know what to do about pixelated files (jpeg & raw) in Bridge CS6?

The problem cropped up last week when some images seem to never fully resolate on the screen (viewing in Bridge), like they were corrupted though they seem fine when opened in photoshop. The pixelation was at random in a batch of about 600 photos. Today it happened again in a group of photos I was putting together for a year-end review. Some are fine, while others are un-viewable.

Actually, I just purged my cache and it seems to have fixed the problem!

What is it about RAW files that make them difficult to interpret?

Are they not simply non-compressed, higher bit depth, bitmap files?
And if they are, then perhaps the issue with respect to poor "conversions" in Aperture has to do with lack of auto processing. When you open a RAW file in ACR it automatically makes adjustments. This doesn't happen in Aperture.

And RAW files are mostly shot using Bayer sensors - instead of each pixel sensing RGB, each pixel only senses one colour, with there being twice as many green sensors as red or blue.

Look at the grid diagram at the bottom of the page. This colour mosaic has to be translated into regular RGB bitmap data.
To make it even more complex, some manufacturers encrypt some of the data, such as white balance info for the Nikon D2X. The RAW format is not just different from manufacturer to manufacturer but from model to model - a .CR2 from a Canon 20D is different from the .CR2 from a Canon 350D, even though they are the same generation and resolution.

Where can I find the critical iTunes files/settings -- transferring data to new HD

Hi -- I recently installed a new internal Seagate 1TB SSHD drive into my MBP 15" Late 2011 to replace the OEM 500GB internal HD. Did a clean install with OS X Recovery. So far so good. But I didn't transfer over the iTunes settings + whatever files are the formats of the music I've imported into iTunes. (due to previous space constraints I took the actual mp3 files and put those on an external previously and just left the iTunes version of the files).
I should have all the relevant iTunes files on on backup drive -- that is I transferred all the system files to the external drive.
Would someone please let me know the names of the critical files for iTunes -- I'd hate to have to start over and import the music and the cover art and all the rest of it!
Also if you could tell me where these files actually reside (i.e. what folders, etc). Thanks!

A question about iTunes library access.

I just got a MacBook Air, having used iTunes for years on iPods, iPhones and an Ipod but originally on my WIndows PC which I still use as my main machine. inlcuding putting CDs onto iTunes. I have around 300 albums on there.
I cannot view my iTunes library on my Macbook although I have authorised it. I have unauthorised all 5 devices and authorised each one again, but still on my Macbook my iTunes library is empty apart from 4 tracks I bought directly on iTunes.
Suggestions gratefully received!

The .exe files are the application files. your Mac will have hte mac version.

Copy the whole folder, complete, to the equivalent location on the Mac (as also indicated in the article). iTunes will then start up with your old library.

You need give the exact error message.
If you get a locked disk message when you try to open iTunes, there are a number of possible causes.
Here are some things to try:
Check the permissions on you iTunes folder in music, your account and SYSTEM should have full control.

Where is your library file? If it is on a network share rather than a local disk that can cause a big slowdown.
Every change in the library requires that all smart playlists are reevaluated and the library is rewritten to disc. As your library grows the time taken to perform these actions will grow exponentially rather than linearly.

What version did you have?
Books do nor exist except in the iPhoto database so you can not "find" a book vista TM. You restore a previous library (be sure NOT to overwrite your current library) and switch to it

Does anyone know if Apple has even acknowledged the problems with itunes 7.7? I have searched the site and found nothing official from Apple — very frustrating. I know they are dealing with the mobileme debacle but it been two weeks already.
When can we expect a fix for itunes 7.7?
since updating to iTunes7.7 I get the spinning beach ball each time I connect my ipod.
I have been an loyal apple user since 1993 and I don't ever remember a time when apple dropped the ball like this. I hope this is not a sign of things to come as perhaps apple is becoming a victim of their own success.

This is a user to user forum, so it's not likely that anyone on here has the answer that you want, and if they do, they probably can't or won't post it. Apple has never been very public about what it's working on. I don't think they are ignoring the feedback coming from their users, I just don't think they are announcing what's going on every step of the way. iTunes v7.7.1 was released today, and some users are reporting that it's fixed issues they've been seeing. Prior to this update, some people reported getting the issue of iTunes hanging when mounting an iPod resolved by recreating their library file:

It sounds like your iTunes Library file has been somehow changed, or recreated. This would prompt that warning to appear, preventing the iPhone from automatically syncing to potentially foreign content, and replacing what's currently on the iPhone.
You can try to import iTunes Music Library.xml into iTunes:
File > Import
This file is located in ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
BTW, Apps purchased from the iTunes store can be downloaded again for free should you lose the original file. Act as though you're going to purchase the app again and you'll receive a message stating you've already purchased the item, with an offer to download again for free.

If both of your Macs are affected by this issue it sounds as though your network may have a firewall issue, especially if your router has a built in firewall with settings that may not be readily accessible.
