What to tell some consultants

Recently my employer hired some consultants to do a salary survey. A rep from the firm interviewed me about my job. He was very clueless -- I practically had to explain what a computer program is. I was not happy with this, so I went and talked to the person in our HR department who is managing the consultants and the survey. She seemed willing to do something to improve matters, and she said that I should make a list of companies that employ people to do what I do. That way, the consultants can include those companies in their survey.
The thing is, I don't know of any companies to give them. Although what I do is not particularly esoteric (develop J2EE-based Web applications on Linux using a MySQL database), this is the only place where I've worked doing that. I learned the basics of Java and Linux while at this job. Does anyone know of any companies I could mention? (Preferably in the SF Bay Area, but not necessarily.)
Don't worry, I'm not trolling for job leads or anything; I just need some information. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
There's another issue with this survey. I'm supposed to suggest an appropriate job title for myself. I know this sounds ridiculous, but as I said, I'm new to this. What am I? Java programmer? Web Application Developer? UI Designer? Could I work the word "Architect" in there somehow? I'm the only developer here and I do the applications in their entirety from SQL code to JSPs.

I think that part of a consultant's duty is to have knowledge pertaining to what he's "consulting". It isn't your job to tell him what people in your field do, I wouldn't think. However, though I don't know any specifics, almost every large company has an IT department and software companies would surely be able to offer lots of helpful information.
As far as your job title, my suggestion would be something like "Senior Applications Developer" or "Senior Architect Designer and Applications Developer" (of course, the later is awfully long).
"Senior Applications Developer" implies (in most cases) an all-encompassing skillset. You're in charge of steps A-Z (regardless of whether or not you have a team with you) and responsible for them as well.

CharSequence class not found - what to tell the customer?

Hi all,
I delivered a jar file to a customer. This jar file works well on my machine and some others I tried, but on the machine of the customer, it always says "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: java/lang/CharSequence "
I googled around and found that the CharSequence class is only in Java since version 1.4. The customer tells me that he has only installed Java 1.5, the latest release. As he is some hundred kilometers away, I have some difficulties in knowing if what he tells me is right or not...
So, in the moment I see two possible reasons for the error:
1. There is an older version around which is used unintentionally - he could check it with java -version and uninstall the old one if it is there
2. The java installation is somehow crappy and has not installed everything (can this happen???)
Is there another possibility? I don't want to make him uninstall and reinstall everything if there might be another reason for the error.

Your customer probably installed his/her new 1.5 version over a 1.3 (or earlier) and didn't set the classpath to 1.5.

DPS: pinch and zoom function not working on all pages within folio (v30 tools using the pdf setting). What would cause some pages to pinch and zoom fluidly, while other pages appear a bit sticky? Could it be a button on the wrong layer?

A 2003 iMac cannot support Snow Leopard 10.6; you'd need an Intel processor and that cannot be retrofitted to your Mac. What does "About this Mac" in your Apple menu say for your processor speed? What does it say about how much RAM you have?
If the processor is 1ghz or faster, you can run OS 10.5; otherwise, you are maxed out at 10.4.11.
Also, are you running any commercial ("pay for") anti-virus or security software? They are notorious for slowing most Macs to a fraction of their speed potential.
A too-full hard drive can drag down performance, especially if you don't have a lot of physical RAM installed. If you single-click your hard drive icon and then do command i, you'll see the disk usage. Looks like this:
The value for "Used" should be no more than about 90 percent of "Capacity." In the example image, that drive has about 34 percent of its space used and 66 percent free--more than enough. Please post what you see for your Capacity and Used numbers
There are a few more things we might check but this is a good start.

Well,good. I missed a lot of protocol moving out of 3.1 & 95 up to newer stuff. Would not have known that a non bill gates program would use their procedures but does make sense. What event tells me when any data changes in a mx:datagrid?

I have a mx:datagrid that I need to have an event tell me when anything at all changes in the datagrid. The datagrid can be empty and as such may not have a dataprovider (=null) some of the time. I have looked at a variety of events but none seem to do what i want - can anyone suggest what event i should be listening for please?

We have not formalized the concept of nested collections in Flex. However,
let me amend my recommendation a bit.
Typically in a nested collection, the objects in the top-level collection
are not just collections but an object with some other reference data and
then a collection like:
    public class FamilyTreeItem
        public var name:String;
        public var children:ArrayCollection;
The top-level collection is listening for propertyChange events. Typically,
as a data item gets modified, a propertyChange event is dispatched. If the
data items do not dispatch propertyChange events, then the itemUpdated()
method is used. Either way, the result is a COLLECTION_CHANGE event from
the top-level collection.
When you have a nested ArrayCollection, while that sub-ArrayCollection is
dispatching COLLECTION_CHANGE, nobody is listening for it at the top-level.
You can dispatch it yourself, or you can call itemUpdated() on the top-level
or dispatch a propertyChange.
The latter will be the most work, but most general. Code in FamilyTreeItem
would attach a listener to the collection for COLLECTION_CHANGE and then
dispatch a propertyChange as appropriate.

Ff decides for itself not to store history longer than 7 days no matter what i tell it

i used firefox for quite some time, years actually, and history always worked without problems. i can't tell exactly when it began, but suddenly it stopped. i tried ticking each of those boxes that are mentioned in help/troubleshoot and also with just selecting remember history without any boxes ticked, it does exactly not that ... well, it does, but it's kinda useless and even more pointless when your history is only stored for the last seven days. is the month ending and turning to the first day of the next, it says today, last seven days, [name of last month] ... i'm happy, thinking, yay it works again ... only to get it deleted after the first seven days of the new month - gone. as if never existed.
i can't bookmark each page i visit just to have some kind of history, that's kinda pointless and ludicros and defeats the whole prupose of storing a history for maybe later reference of wot i did some time ago.

[on another note, but not related to the above question although it annoys me since even a longer time ... what is it with those memory and cpu spikes to 90% out of nothing ff does, no difference if there are 20 tabs open or just one blank tab?]

Installation with LVM and gpg-encrypted key, what to tell Grub

after years of using Gentoo Linux I grew tired of the compilation effort, so I decided to give Arch Linux a shot. I like the idea of a basic system which I can fit to my needs instead of a bloated distribution.
I want to encrypt my disk and did this with the following tutorials:
Official Arch Linux Install Guide
DM Crypt with LUKS
Basic Cryptsetup
Gentoo DM-Crypt with LUKS
So far, the installation worked well, but I'm stuck with this problem:
I have a gpg encrypted key stored on a SD-Card.
My mkinitcpio.conf has the hook line:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata mmc usbinput fsck keymap encrypt lvm2 filesystems
/etc/default/grub contains:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/sda6:vg root=/dev-mapper/vg-root ro cryptkey=/dev/mmcblk0p1:jfs:/Key.gpg"
However, if I am booting, there are the following outputs:
No key available with this passphrase.
Invalid keyfile. Reverting to passphrase.
A password is required to access the vg volume:
Enter passphrase for /dev/sda6:
So, obviously, he isn't able to gpg-decrypt the key, or am I missing something?
I do really need some help at this point.

On my gentoo installation, I had to tell cryptsetup to use the decrypted key as password for the new key. In fact
gpg -q -d <GPG-Keyfile> | cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/<encryptedPartition> <cryptContainer>
did exactly what I wanted.
I wanted to have my system highly secured, so a password-protected keyfile on an extern medium was the best choice.
Edit: There has been another tutorial: System encryption with gpg encrypted keys, but it's out of date.

What a differnce some ram makes.......

ok. i had my new macbook for a week now, and i was not so convinced, but i only had the 512 mb ram in it. i oderd them seperatly since its much cheaper.
i just installed the 2 gigabyte, and oh boy, what a difference! now its runs like its suposed to run. no delays no spinning wheel no nothing. i pend some of the bigger progams and it was fast. now my smile comes back. i think its fraud that apple even sells these machines with only 512. they don´t´work proper at all. but they did this with the ibooks to. i just tell you, if you want fun get at least 1 gig. the installation was easy. but then i am pretty handy with small screws. the more delicate part was the padding on the lshape cover. you have to get it back into the ramslides wich is a little tricky. but a sall screwdriver (not a phillips) is a big help.....

I've asked this question before...and from what I've been told, the video memory is an OS dependent thing. And if it's an OS dependent thing, it means that you "should" and "might" be able to with future OS updates. That I'm hoping.
There should be a disclaimer though if Apple does decide to do that...to have a minimal requirement of 1G or more in order to change the video memory. 512MB right now is dragging the MacBook a little. What would happen if people changed the memory from 64MB to 128MB? It will only tax the MacBook more.
But...I'm only guessing and I'm not saying that Apple should let us change the video memory allocation. Just saying that it would be nice if they would implement it in their next OS update(s).
I'm sure there are more technical people on this forum that would know more about his issue. From what I've been told, the chipset would allow up to 226MB of video memory...or something like that.

What happened to some of my images? Lightroom/Photoshop won't read them.

Hello,
I only shoot Nikon Raw, Using Lightroom to make adjustments and exports. I am using Windows 7.
I use an external card reader and always copy everything directly to my computer first, then Import to Lightroom. I then reformat the memory card, so I can use it again.
I have never seen this before in my images.
After Importing Into Lightroom, on some of my images, (a few scattered instances) I'm seeing something that looks like this , an exclamation mark in a black circle that says;
Under Library Tab: "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo", "You will not be able to make adjustments to the photo"
Under Develop Tab: " An unexpected end-of-file occurred"
Any Image, that has that icon on them, In Lightroom, I cannot make ANY edits or exports.
The file size looks right, I can see what the image looks like. I tried opening the image in Photoshop, but I get the same error message; " An unexpected end-of-file occurred"
Why can't these images be accessed by my photo editing programs?
Is the file corrupted ?
Did it happen in file transfer, or by a faulty memory card?
Can I save the images?
What can I do to prevent this from ever happening again?

I do put myself at blame. I did not make sure that all the images were successfully imported. I just copied everything and away I went.
This is a first for me. I did not think that such a thing could happen, I thought for sure that if anything like this were to happen, that an error message would pop up saying something like "some of your images did not copy properly".
Knowing all of this, am I doomed? Is there nothing I can do? Perhaps there's some debugging tool?
There's gotta be something, it cant be a total right off, can it? Is there some method of recovery?

Normally when i click on a link in the thunderbird messege there opened a new tab in firefox, but now firefox starts again.
Is there someone who can tell me how to change this.

Thunderbird did it's part. it handed the URL to Firefox.
You control how Firefox behaves in the options of Firefox.

What happened to the iTunes movie libarary in OS X 10.8 and what happened to some of my movies during upgrade to 10.8?

Does anyone know what happened to the movies that were in itunes in OS X 10.5 when I upgraded to 10.8 itunes no longer has a movie page. Some of my movies I purchased from itunes are now gone too. I see the itunes movie library when I look using my finder window.

I couldn't agree more! I have used many printers at work and assigned many as well. I typically use laser printers for the obvious reasons. I purchased the epson WF-3540 for the H.R. dept due to certain demands (needed fax mach, needed auto duplex print and scan capabilities, needed e-print, needed to print on envelopes and needed to print in color) Speed was a factor as was ink usage and cost. This printer claimed to meet all those needs while using little ink. I was shocked at how fast this thing was.It scans like a dream. Needless to say this is basically the only printer I purchase now and everyone I got it for LOVES it. Great job Epson
