When try to upgrade to os 5.1 it downloads to itunes,but then i get a message "firmware file not compatable"????

Are you attempting to upgrade to the current version of iOS (5.1.1) or to 5.1? If you're not trying to update to the current version, it won't work. 5.1 is no longer signed.

And I assume you have already checked to see if your iTunes purchases are authorized by choosing Store -> Authorize This Computer?

You might want to try it again. It started working for me about 10 minutes ago (~8pm CST).

iTunes has various components bundled with it that it requires for general usage. I advise that we completely remove iTunes and all of these related components, verify that they have been removed, then reinstall. To do so, please follow the steps in this article:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

Note: it is important to remove the 7 components in order. Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
If the above does not resolve your issue, I recommend we reset the SC Info folder:

I have OS X 10.5.8. I was finally able to locate iTunes 10.6.3 (not easy with 10.7 being the latest and greatest), so I have updated that. My phone syncs again! But I went ahead and ordered Snow Leopard to upgrade my OS. Wont' be too long before every update will require that.
