When will App Tabs glow?

I checked the "What are App Tabs?" and read the following descriptions:
App Tabs notify you with a blue highlight when they '''change'''.
* If you have Gmail set as an App Tab, for example, and you are using a different tab when a new email is received, your Gmail tab will glow.
I'm wondering the exact meaning of "change" because after I pinned Weibo.com(biggest twitter-like website in China) as an App Tab, new messages won't make the tab look different. So I want to know if there is an API to do the job or it's just the customized feature for only limited websites by Firefox itself. Thanks!

Quite simply, the blue highlight is caused by a change in title.
It was a fix implemented in response to the bug [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=577096 "App Tabs should indicate change of state in <title>"].
For proof of the above, enter the JavaScript code from [http://pastebin.com/pDj6Ruyc here] in the address bar and press enter.
The App Tab will then turn blue every time it loses focus, until it is next refreshed.
Brief explaination:
The code adds an event listener to change the title to a random number every time the tab is changed (ie. a blur event is fired). The containing void sets the return value to undefined, so the document content is not changed (which it would be otherwise).
JavaScript is a client-side (user-end) scripting language that can modify HTML (website) content throughout the duration of a single page (ie. until a new page is loaded/the same page is reloaded), and is built into all popular browsers, along with the ability to access it through the "javascript:" address protocol.
For the case of weibo.com, you would be well advised to have a look at the greasemonkey add-on for firefox, and either create your own script or persuade a friendly JavaScript coder to make one for you, that changes the title whenever a new message is received.

This is John from the iTunes store. I'm sorry to hear that you are unable to select the Apps tab when you connect your iPhone 4. I know how important it can be to manage your apps, and I'm here to help.
To resolve this, I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. Before beginning, please back up your iTunes library as explained here:
How to back up your media in iTunes

To uninstall iTunes, please follow the steps in this article:
Removing iTunes for Mac OS X

After you've uninstalled iTunes and removed the related files, you will need to reinstall it. You can download the latest version free of charge from the iTunes website:

After you've reinstalled iTunes, please ensure you have the latest version of QuickTime installed. You can find the latest version here:

I didn't try it... if you do, let me know the outcome.
    Good luck.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.6.4)   iPhone 4, iPad
    After following this same procedure.
Well i know this was very frustrating for me as I still had this issue, but didn't give up?
_*In short my problem existed from a restore from backup, probably corrupted or missing somehow. So I had the fun task of setting up as new the only hard part was the contacts argghh.*_
Read on if you wish of my dilemma.
*I followed all of the usual procedures from the basic rebooting the iPhone, to fully wiping itunes off my mac three times, to no avail, as well as restoring my iPhone twice.*
What I then realised is, it was working properly without crashing after a restore, but when I restored from a back up I noticed it would crash.
So what I did was made sure all my purchases where transferred to my mac.
+_*Connecting iphone>>right clicking on my device>>selecting and clicking on "Transfer Purchases"*_+
Proceeded to transfer purchases that way, I already had music backed up on my mac, as for contacts I wrote them all down (arggh).
*_Then i proceeded to restore iphone, NOT FROM BACK UP!!, then once restored clicked on setup as new_*
Clicked on apps tab, "YAY" works "YAY", like ok!! lets disconnect a few times and reconnect, turn off computer, restart, reboot phone, and still worked fine.
But when I tried restoring from back up it crashed.
_*No I wasn't Jail Broken, just updated to iOS 4.1.*_
Hope this helps for some, and sorry for the long comment.

  • App tabs are not saving nor highlighting when I get updates

When I restart Firefox, my app tabs sometimes saves, and sometimes they do not. Also I open a new window in a current session, my app tabs do not save between windows. I would expect them to be on every window I opened; otherwise, they'd really be no different from normal tabs.
Also, Firefox says that when an app tab updates, it will highlight. However, my hotmail app tab and my facebook app tab will not highlight no matter how many emails or facebook notifications I receive.
    Edit:
Is there a way to have the app tab save the page you pinned. For example, have it save my facebook wall and have it open my facebook wall when I restart firefox instead of having it load a friend's profile page?

The app tabs feature is still in a relatively early stage of development. The option to remember app tabs independently of sessions has not yet been implemented, but it will be part of the release version of Firefox 4.

  • App tabs and Prism

Will App Tabs replace webapp shortcuts or Prism?
I like App Tabs but Prism had other advantages. How about some kind of option so I can open webapps without starting Firefox fully (and restoring my tabs). And similarly ability to close the regular Firefox windows (like a File->Exit) yet keep webapps running. Somewhat similar to how Chrome does, but I'd like that in Firefox - the most secure and customizable browser!
Keep up the good work! Thanks!

  • All of the App Tabs you have set when you close Firefox will open as App Tabs when you start Firefox again. This is not working, windows XP system. Bug or fix?

Just installed v5 of Firefox over v4.1 to XP system, 2Gb memory. Reinstalled 2Java updates, Silverlight and adobe reader as recommended in post firefox installation window. Rebooted and tried to make the new AppTabs work to no avail.
I"m not sure what else you need. The new AppTabs are not working. When Firefox is closed, AppTabs do not reappear when it is reopened later. They were installed by right-click on open tab as instructed on your upgrade website. Tabs were for yMail, gMail, and iGoogle. I have not tried to pin any other apps or sites. Is there anything I can do to make this work, or is this a bug? Thanks for the assist. mikeS

  • I opened Google Chat in a tab and pinned it as an App Tab, but the App Tab does not "glow" when new message arrives in Google Chat.

    I am running Firefox 4.0.
I opened this page for Google Talk (http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/client), signed in, and initiated a chat with one of my contacts.
Then, I pinned the tab (containing the above chat page) as an App Tab.
According to the documentation for Firefox 4, when the contents of an App Tab's page is changed, the corresponding tab is highlighted.
However, when a new chat message arrives in the Google Talk page (that corresponds to the pinned App Tab), the tab is not highlighted.
App Tab highlighting works for Gmail, and other web pages (i.e., when other web pages are pinned as App Tabs the corresponding tab is highlighted when the contents of the page changes), but App Tab highlighting does not work for the Google Talk page. Is this a bug in Firefox 4?

    Thanks for the quick replies.
@cor-el: I think you are correct ... App Tabs do not glow when the content of the page changes (which would result in the tab "glowing" when a new Google Talk message arrived) ... but App Tabs only glow when the tab title changes.
I thought about writing a java script (to be used with greasemonkey) to change the tab title when a new message arrives in the Google Talk page .... but the Google Talk page looks like it's Adobe Flash.
I know that there is a "beep" when a chat message arrives, but I wanted some kind of visual notification (like the glowing App Tab) when a message arrives (because my computer is playing music and I don't hear the "beep" when a message arrives).
Any suggestions for getting a visual notification when new Google Talk chat message arrives?

  • I copied this from your 5.0 download information: "All of the App Tabs you have set when you close Firefox will open as App Tabs when you start Firefox again." When I opened my computer today all my apptabs from yesterday had disappeared. Why?

Your download page for 5.0 stated: All of the App Tabs you have set when you close Firefox will open as App Tabs when you start Firefox again.
I liked the convenience of using App Tabs and was disappointed to find that the ones I had set up yesterday were gone today. Am I doing something wrong?

Works fine for me, I can simulate your problem by improperly closing Firefox.
The correct way would be to close the windows you don't want and then to exit Firefox through the File ("'''Alt+F'''") menu then use '''Exit''' or '''Qui'''t depending on your system.
But '''I can simulate your problem''' by closing the good window with "X" in the upper right-corner first (the one with the app-tabs) and then close the other window by any means.
You restart Firefox and open a window, since you closed without app-tabs there are none so you just see a window with your home page.
Firefox has some things added to Firefox 4 and therefore in Firefox 5.
    # "'''Alt+S'''" (Hi'''s'''tory menu)
    # "'''Restore Previous Session'''" (that's the window without the app-tabs, but you have to this first)
    # "'''Restore Recently Closed Windows'''" -- can choose which window to reopen based on name and the mouse-over tells how many tabs. or you just use "'''Restore All Windows'''" without the guessing.
''I know you are on a Mac, and this affects Windows user more than anybody else, but it does affect other systems besides Windows, occasionally, perhaps more often now with the plugins container.''
The following may not completely eliminate having to terminate Firefox through the Windows Control Panel but it will come very close.
'''Plug-in and tasks started by Firefox may continue after attempting
to close Firefox''' The "X" in the upper right-hand corner closes the
Window (same as Ctrl+Shift+W) but even if it is the last Firefox window,
it does not necessarily close Firefox .
The only '''proper way to exit Firefox''' is to use '''Exit''' through the
File menu, not the "X" in the upper right corner of last Firefox window.
In the Firefox 4 and 5 that would be Alt+F then X
    * '''Firefox hangs''' | Troubleshooting | Firefox Support <br>http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20hangs#w_hang-at-exit
Use the '''Windows Task Manger''' to remove all running firefox.exe in the "'''Processes'''" tab of the Windows Task Manager, then restart Firefox.
If Firefox will still not start, remove the parent.lock file from the profile which is created each time Firefox is started to prevent other Firefox tasks from running, see<br>
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use#Remove_the_profile_lock_file
'''Avoiding Problems with close/restart''' ''choose either extension''
:Use to close and restart Firefox after enabling or disabling an extension, switching to a new theme, or modifying configuration files, then you don't have to worry about delay or have to look in the Task Manager to see if Firefox is closed yet.
Both extensions use the same keyboard shortcut "'''Ctrl+Alt+R'''" or a file menu option.

  • My Gmail app tab is not glowing when I receive new email

On Firefox 4, when I received new email my Gmail app tab would glow. Now when I have Firefox 5, it no longer works. Is it a setting issue or a version issue?

    HI,
I have found this to be somewhat intermittent.
I often miss the first "new Message" that is sent, no matter which service it is with.
However after I have replied at least once I can bring other apps to the front and then I hear the Sound and the Notification appears.
As of yet I have not discovered though, a way to make it work first time every time like it should.

  • App tabs will not save. when close then open ff, the app tabs are gone. how do I save them?

Every time i set up some app tabs, they disappear when I close ff. So upon reopen, have to set them up again, just to disappear again when i close ff. I thought once setup, they stay until deleted. Am I wrong on this? If they are supposed to show up after closing, it is not working on my pc. Running windows xp service pack 3.

The add-on "app-tab initializer" 0.2 fixed it for me. You define your preferred app tabs and it opens them each time firefox is launched.
