Which http server shall I use, 9i database or 9ias

Shall I keep the apache http which followed the database, or should I delete it and install the one that comes with 9ias. The only thing i know is that i cant have both.....
please help !!!!
Sindre

I you have 9ias up and running I should suggest that you use the Apache of 9ias because then you could also use the other products of 9ias like forms&reports listener, discoverer, wireless, J2EE, ...
You don't have to deinstall the Apache of the database, just set the service on "manual".

  • How to detect which http server is used ?

    Hello
I need a simple method to determine which http server is used on an existing APEX installation, amongst the 3 possible methods.
    Thanx

In most cases its the URL that hints at what is behind the scenes.
If you /pls/apex in all probability its Oracle HTTP Server with ModPLSQL
If you see <hist>:8080 then chances are its EPG or OC4J
If you see someother port, but not /pls/apex then chances are its ApexListener.
A more accurate way is to run the command below from within Apex , either an application or SQLWorkshop
select owa_util.GET_CGI_ENV('SERVER_SOFTWARE') from dualEPG Return Oracle Embedded PL/SQL Gateway/10.2.0.1.0 on XE
    Apex-Listener returns Mod-Apex

Hello, we are unable to use JDev 9.0.3.1035.
We installed your distribution and set it up as follows:
    1. Linked to CVS and checked out our project which works just fine under JDev 9.0.2
    2. Added libraries for Jakarta ECS and MS SQL Server JDBC drivers.

This is happening since we switched from JDEV 9.0.2 which always started up cleanly. It appears that the port is not being released on OC4J server termination. We are not running any other web servers and verified all open ports with netstat -a.

  • Error starting HTTP-Server: Address in use: JVM_Bind

I installed J2ee version of Oracle9iAS R2 for windows. When I start my application server, I always get the error "Error starting HTTP-Server: Address in use: JVM_Bind". In the previous version, if I met this message, I can change the port number in "http-web-site.xml", but now, no matter what port number I changed, I always get this error message.
Could anybody please help me with this issue?
Can Oracle provides a tool that can automatically free the port?
    Thanks, Jessie

If you are getting this error while starting the Oracle9iAS by using the NT services or using command line (dcmctl) then there is a port conflict for the HTTP Server. You can go the EM Website and select HTTP Server ->Server properties and select the port# for the HTTP Server.
OC4J is configured to listen for AJP requests only and the ports are dynamically assigned. The port ranges can be specified : OC4J Instance -> Server Properties

  • Which Application Server should I Use

    Hi All,
I am learning the EJBs for the first time. I tried to search for tutorials and found a few tutorials in SUN website. For some they asked me to install weblogic server. Then in another link they are showing sun application server.
Please advise which application server is better or more widely used. I am learning EJB's to improve my job prospects.
    Thanks

You can use the Sun application server. Please checkout the following links:

  • Upgrading to APEX 3.2 in XE, which web server am I using?

New user, so much to learn, begin with the idiot stuff.
I have a new install of XE under Windows and was not asked about PL/SQL gateway or Apache. I want to upgrade APEX and may as well stick with I am already using, so ...
How do I tell whether I am using PL/SQL gateway or Apache? The XE install guide didn't help, I am guessing that I am not using Apache because there was no configuration step for it in the install.
Are there comparisons of PL/SQL gateway and Apache showing pros and cons which would let me make a sensible choice?
Are there any gotchas in the seemingly newly introduced disconnect between APEX accounts and database accounts?
    Thanks,
    Ed

    Ed,
If you just installed XE, you are using the Embedded PL/SQL Gateway. About the pros and cons of EPG vs. Apache, our friend Tyler made some points here: Re: APEX3.2 with emp can not running on oracle database10g? .
Are there any gotchas in the seemingly newly introduced disconnect between APEX accounts and database accounts?I think you may have misinterpreted something you read. There are no newly introduced changes having to do with XE+Application Express (which has been out there for years now) or with the relationship of database accounts to Application Express user accounts.

  • Which J2EE server for commercial use ?

I'm a bit new to all of this so please be gentle...
I'm currently learning all about J2EE by going through the tutorials provided by Sun (the bookstore, the bank etc). At the moment, I use the j2ee.exe program that comes with the SDK as my server.
My question is : when it comes to actually setting up a J2EE server for real-world use, would I still be using the same j2ee.exe or is this merely for test purposes and cannot take the strain of serious use.
If it is merely for testing and development, which j2ee servers are used out there in the big wide world ? I hear a lot spoken about Tomcat but don't know what it is.
I'd appreciate any comments about this. Although I can find lots of detailed knowledge about j2ee and server-side java in general, there seems to be very little information giving a general overview.
    Thanks - Steve.

Funny cos' I was nearly gonna ask the same question myself but...One thing I know is that Tomcat is only the servlet implementation of J2EE and cannot run EJB's...this I know for sure... On the other hand, Application servers like IBM's Websphere or BEA's Weblogic can handle both Servlets and EJB's...but are quite costly....there exists an open source version called JBOSS (jboss.org) that is free and seems to be quite worth checking out...as far as j2ee.exe goes, I think it just supports basic EJB implementation on it's own and does not take care of security, transactions, persistence etc... like the expensive ones do..
    did that help?

  • Help: which LDAP server should I use with weblogic 5.1

    Hi:
I try to use LDAP for user profile management. I am free to use any LDAP
server as long as it is easy to work with weblogic 5.1 or 6.0.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you.
    li

This is what I did for my DS settings
    1. select Oracle JDBC Driver
    2. set Classes12.jar in Websphre classpath - (Oracle thin driver)
    3. create DS with option User defined JDBC provider
means I have added Thin driver provided by Oracle , instead of deprecated Thin driver from IBM.

Which OEM Grid version we can install on Oralce 11gR1 (11.1.0.6 ) with Windows 2008 - 64 bit OS.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the Metalink Note..
But my 11gR1 (11.1.0.6) is on 64-bit Windows 2008 and the OEM suggested by Fran is for Windows 32-Bit.

  • Which JetDirect Printer Server shall I choose for my LaserJet M1319f?

    Hi,
I own a LaserJet M1319f MFP and would need to make it "network aware" as we have Mac, Win and iOs devices and all want to print :-)
For a start I would be OK with just printing capabilities, I don't need it to scan or fax with the computer(s).
The basic question is: Which Printer Server shall I choose? I don't want to run a PC as Server so I'd need "something", in earlier days I used a Jetdirect device but which one would be compatible with the M1319?
    Any hints welcome,
    Many thanks,
    Peter

While your Laserjet appears to be a consumer model, the Jetdirect print servers are commerical products.
You would be best to post this question in the commercial support forums.

  • Apex Newbie question !!!!!  HTTP server ????

I am newbie at APEX. I have a DBA background, but no experience with Oracle applications.
I DO respect your time, and have tried to find this info on teh docs, but, honestly, can not find it. And I looked over everywhere, metalink, otn, gogling. I thought that I would find it on these forums under some form of FAQs, but have not found the answer :-(
I have installed oracle database 11g for windows on my laptop, and when installing APEX 3.2, it asks me to stop the http server and ..... :-)
Now, I have a question regarding the Oracle HTTP server, which is supposed to be isntalled with the 11g, instead of the Companion CD, which no longers exist.
First question. We have a http server that is used by oracle EM database control, correct ? I do not see a service for it on the Services list. Teh apex application install asks for stopping/starting the http server. How do we do that ? AND, where the the http server binaries located ? I did a search for apache, and found it under C:\app\oracle\product\11.1.0\db_1\perl\site\5.8.3\lib\Apache, but no binaries there, or under ORACLE_BASE\bin either.
What do I setup for ORACLE_HTTPSERVER windows environment on a brand new 11g database install ?
Now, I see that we can get HTTP server from BEA install. I was trying to keep APEX from using a web server tier here. To me, the beauty of APEX is to not have to manage BEA, or any other tier. Keep it simple, at least for development, and keep everything on the DB, and simply use the native HTTP server.
So, this is a VERY basic question, but how do I do that ? I will worry about what I can and can not do with the native HTTP server or BEA later. I just want to get this up and running so that I can start playing with it.
    Thanks,
    Henrique

Here is my latest update before I go to bed :-(
I was able to install the HTTP server, but had some issues later down on the apex install.
    C:\app\oracle\product\10g-iAS-http-server\opmn\bin>opmnctl status
    Processes in Instance: IAS-1
    --------------------------------------------------------------+---------
    ias-component | process-type | pid | status
    --------------------------------------------------------------+---------
    HTTP_Server | HTTP_Server | 5204 | Alive
I am able to see the welcome page for the web server here
    http://localhost:7777/
I am able to reset the admin password, ( by the way, I did setup the gateway as well :-) ). I am not sure what happens when you have both the gateway and the web server setup. Now, when try to login to the apex admin account using either
    http://localhost:7777/apex/apex_admin or
    http://localhost:7777/pls/apex/apex_admin, nothing happens besides a HTTP-404 error.
Now, when I had the port set to 8080, via the commands
    SQL> EXEC DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT(8080);
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    SQL> SELECT DBMS_XDB.GETHTTPPORT FROM DUAL;
    GETHTTPPORT
    8080
and try to login again here
    http://localhost:7777/pls/apex/apex_admin
I do get a prompt, but when i enter admin, and the password I have setup, it does not allow me to get in :-(
Now, I need some explanation of this DAD file, as I am not sure if I need it to simply login during install. Here is the man page from the install doc :
    3.4.11.1 Creating a Workspace Manually
To create an Oracle Application Express workspace manually:
Log in to Oracle Application Express Administration Services. Oracle Application Express Administration Services is a separate application for managing an entire Oracle Application Express instance. You log in using the ADMIN account and password created or reset during the installation process.
In a Web browser, navigate to the Oracle Application Express Administration Services application.
If your setup uses Apache and mod_plsql, go to:
    http://hostname:port/pls/apex/apex_admin
    Where:
hostname is the name of the system where Oracle HTTP Server is installed.
port is the port number assigned to Oracle HTTP Server. In a default installation, this number is 7777.
pls is the indicator to use the mod_plsql cartridge.
***apex is the database access descriptor (DAD) defined in the mod_plsql configuration file.***
Here it mentions this DAD file, and I am not sure if I need it now, and even, how to reference it. My database name is called apex, but I do not have anything on my dads.conf file. Should I have something there ? I see a sample such as this from the README.DADs file :
    <Location /plsqlapp>
    SetHandler pls_handler
    Order deny,allow
    Allow from all
    AllowOverride None
    PlsqlDatabaseUsername scott
    PlsqlDatabasePassword tiger
    PlsqlDatabaseConnectString orcl
    PlsqlAuthenticationMode Basic
    PlsqlDefaultPage scott.home
    PlsqlDocumentTablename scott.wwdoc_document
    PlsqlDocumentPath docs
    PlsqlDocumentProcedure scott.wwdoc_process.process_download
    </Location>
It is a bit late tonite. Tomorrow I will get back at it.
Thanks for any help, but I must be doing something really obvious to you guys here, and I can't see it :-(
    Cheers,
    Henrique

  • Oracle XDB HTTP Server?

    Hi,
    Version: 11.1.0.6 - Linux
I have configured the Apex installation to use the Oracle XML DB HTTP Server and everything is working fine.
I also understand that this XML DB HTTP server is running in the database.
Just wanted to know if I could find the path of this HTTP server and where it is running in the linux box on which this DB is installed.
Could somebody please help me with this information.
    Regards,
    Jitesh

    Hi Prabodh,
The path is the http://host_name:port/apex is the url to access the apex application.
Ex: If I am using an Apache server, then I would have a path for this Apache server on my linux machine.
Since, my current scenario deals with a XDB HTTP server inside the DB, just wanted to know that does this HTTP server have a path where I could access it on the linux machine as well.

  • HTTP Server: Stand-alone install

Is it possible to have the HTTP server that comes on the companion CD installed on a separate machine from the database (and APEX). I know this is possible with the application server but I cannot find in the doco whether the HTTP Server can stand on its own. A link to the appropriate docs would help. Thanks.

    "j_70",
Yes - this is possible and supported. It is how apex.oracle.com is configured.
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32472_01/doc/install.300/b32468/post_inst.htm#BHAFJJDA
It's really just a matter of copying the images directory to the filesystem for use by Oracle HTTP Server, and then configuring a Database Access Descriptor. The PlsqlDatabaseConnectString lets you specify the host, which could be remote.

Is there any issue with the set or definition that I get the above error?

What is the version of the Oracle database in which you have specified/and use the database link?
If it is for example 10.2.0.3.0 you need to apply the mandatory patch for RDBMS bug 5965763 first before being able to use an 11g gateway. Have a look at MetaLink note 457808.1 for details about this patch.
