Which is better as a production web server: JWSDP or Tomcat 4.0?

Also, do I need to run the Apache HTTP Server in a high-volume production website?
Thanks.

The arguement has always been that Tomcat was used for dynamic content and Apache HTTP for static content.
For a production site using Apache solutions, your best bet is to use Apache HTTP and Tomcat in an integrated manner.
You can setup HTTP and Tomcat to act as one via the use of mod_webapp so they appear as one server.
However (and I'm sensing the flames as I type this), if you are running a seriously high volume server, you may be better off researching alternatives such as the iPlanet range. While I'm not saying they are better, they do seem to have a large market share which MAY indicate they are worth while.
For my part I run HTTP and Tomcat on my domain as they are free and my site is extremely low volume.
Chris.

    Which is better for music production: macbook air or pro?

    The MacBook Pro has higher specifications, depending
    on the model, and then CTO additional upgrades.
    The Air does not have a Retina display, but has lesser
    specs, so that may make a difference. They still offer a
    low-end MB/Pro w/ optical drive, w/o Retina; specs vary;
    it may work in your instance. You'd have 14 days to take
    a new Apple computer back, so keep that in mind.
    Good luck!

    how to change web server from inbuilt Tomcat to IIS in already configured Cold Fusion 10

    You just need to run the Web Server Configuration Tool to connect ColdFusion to IIS.  It can be found in the ColdFusion program group off of the Start menu.  Be sure to run it "As Administrator".

  • How to integrate Apache Web Server and Apache Tomcat 4.0 ?

    <pre>
    Hi All,
    Can anyone give me a detailed description(or url that tells so) of how to install the Apache Web Server, Apache Tomcat Server4.0 and Integrate both of them.
    Still now I am using Apache Tomcat 4.0 as a standalone application and now I want to learn how to install,use Apache Web Server and integrate this with Apache Tomcat.
    Please point me to exact location,url to download the recent Apache Web Server and,
    Can I use my existing Standalone Apache Tomcat 4.0 to integrate this with Apache Web Server that I am going to download.
    A detailed explanation of how to integrate both is very helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    <pre>

    The way to integrate Apache Web Server & Apache is very easy. The first step is download the library to connect both servers. This library can be download from http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat-4.0/release/v4.0/bin/webapp-module-1.0-tc40-windows.zip.
    Copy the files to APACHE_HOME\modules and open httpd.conf to change any lines:
    You find the section "LoadModule" and you add the next lines:
    LoadModule webapp_module modules/mod_webapp.so
    AddModule mod_webapp.c
    And the end of the file you must add these lines:
    WebAppConnection conexion warp localhost:8008
    WebAppDeploy examples conexion /examples
    The first parameter -2nd line- (examples) is the URL name application, the second is the connection's name and the last parameter is the application's name. This name is the same which in servlet.xml.
    At last you can add one more lines to check the module's configuration:
    WebAppInfo /webapp-info
    If you visit http://<yoor_host>/webapp-info you can see the configuration.

  • AMD vs Core I7 - which performs better for Adobe Products?

    I'm currently running an AMD System (Phenom 2 x4 3.2Ghz, 8GB DDR3 PC10666, ATI 3870 512MB, Windows Ultimate 64bit, WD 120GB 10k RPM)
    and I'm wondering if it's worth purchasing and building a new, intel Core i7-920 system. I know the higher end, 970 would be better, but I don't feel like dropping $1k on a processor - so 920 is what I'm looking at.
    I would like to know (from users who have used, or are familiar with both platforms) which system performs better with the Adobe production suite and if it's worth the investment to switch from AMD to Intel. Does Hyper Threading affect the way AE / Premiere render? Will I notice a difference in speed from 8GB to 12/24GB for memory (for AE / Pr)?
    I would also like any suggestions on graphics cards (FireGL vs Quadro or GTX vs Radeon) to boost performance. I'm not much of a gamer and I would like to concentrate more of power on production. Right now I'm using a gaming card (an older one at that) and I would like to know if buying a newer one will boost performance for AE / Pr.
    Any help, tips, or suggestions would be great!
    Thanks,
    Drew

    I would recommend Intel processors over AMD for Adobe products.
    Does Hyper Threading affect the way AE / Premiere render?
    I can't talk for Premiere. For AE, it's perhaps marginal compared to the number of physical cores. And could be in some cases counter-productive if it tricks AE's multiprocessing system into believing there are twice as many cores, because of the way AE assigns RAM to the rendering instances it launches for each core (when "Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously" is enabled in Preferences).
    Will I notice a difference in speed from 8GB to 12/24GB for memory (for AE / Pr)?
    Yes, 8 GB is actually the absolute minimum you want for a quad core system (2 GB per core).
    After that, it depends on the content. For HD sized Comps, large source files and/or 32 bpc processing, having more RAM would lead to better performance and reliability.
    I would also like any suggestions on graphics cards (FireGL vs Quadro
    or GTX vs Radeon) to boost performance. I'm not much of a gamer and I
    would like to concentrate more of power on production.
    In AE, OpenGL previews are meant to provide a smoother/more responsive experience when interacting with the application. It won't help with render times in most cases. A medium to high end consumer level card should be fine. No need to sell the house for one of the pro level models. Keep an eye to the list of officially supported card/driver combinations.

  • Why should we use iPlanet Web Server compared to TomCat?

    i seriously doubt you want to use wsdl4j unless you are doing really advanced webservice work. assuming you are developing this webservice from scratch, you basically want to use JAXWS: define an appropriate interface and your value classes, and let JAXWS do the rest. metro is the JAXWS implementation included in the oracle jdk and it has great tutorials and reference documentation online. i'd suggest you start here: http://metro.java.net/getting-started/

  • Error on live web server - Retrieving the COM class factory for component

    I've had a good read of this forum and can't find the answer to this particular issue. Everything works fine until I upload my vb.net/crystal reports solution to my live production web server. The error I get when I try to open a Crystal Report from the web is:
    Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {059AC10F-0010-4C43-8876-1FC7BEAF218B} failed due to the following error: 80070005.
    It is the following line of my VB.net source code that causes the error.
    Dim oRpt As New CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument
    I've installed CRRuntime_12_0_mlb.msi to my Windows 2008 / IIS7 web server (This is a 64bit server).
    The website works fine on a 32 bit system but on this new server I keep getting the above errors.
    I've tried resinstalling the crystal reports numerous times and restarting. I've also tried installing the SP2 version of the CRRuntime and still get the same errors.
    I've added read/write permissions to Windows/Temp directory for Network Service.
    I've tried to manually register sacommlayer.dll which registers correctly.
    The website is not compiled into a binary, the aspx.vb files are simply uploaded to the webserver and compiled on the fly by the server.
    I've tried to add <identity impersonate="true" userName="MACHINENAME\administrator" password="PASSWORD" /> into the web.config file to see if this gets any further.
    It does however then errors on the following VB Line.
    oRpt.SetDataSource(dsSWMP)
    with the error
    Failed to load database information.Error in File crSitewasteManagementPlan {BEC6811A-D612-4ED6-9AF7-B0C9BED7A966}.rpt:
    Failed to load database information
    I've also tried opening up the C: / D: drives to the NETWORK SERVICE account with full control (temporarily) to see if I can get past the errors, however this has not worked for me.
    Any other ideas to why this might not be working? Ideally I would not like to be using the identity impersonation at all.
    Kind Regards
    James

    Dear Ludek,
    I have tried manually registering the sacommlayer.dll already however this didn't make a difference.
    I have checked versions of this DLL between the 2 servers and they are the same. (v12.0.0.683)
    Find below the logs from process monitor for the 64 bit server.
    It definitely shows where it is failing.. any suggestions to fix it?
    I can email more detailed logs if you supply me with your email address.

  • Web server requirement

    Using DW I created a simple flash slideshow.  It works fine in test but when I move the page, photos and file to the production server, it does not show.  The first time I tested it on the test server, a message came up and said it was installing something.  I think the web server must also need this installed but I don't know what it was that DW installed.  Can anyone tell me if there is a requirement I need to install on the production web server?

    You'll probably get better results if you post this in the Dreamweaver forum:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/dreamweaver/dreamweaver_general
    That said, you don't need to install anything on the web server to run a Flash slideshow. The browser needs Flash Player, but most browsers already have it installed. If it works in your test environment and not in your production environment, I'd make sure you uploaded all your files to the correct locations on the web server.

    I know it may be hard to throw away all this code, but consider using the jakarta fileupload component.
    I think it would simplify your code down to
    // Create a factory for disk-based file items
    FileItemFactory factory = new DiskFileItemFactory();
    // Create a new file upload handler
    ServletFileUpload upload = new ServletFileUpload(factory);
    // Parse the request
    List /* FileItem */ items = upload.parseRequest(request);
    // Process the uploaded items
    Iterator iter = items.iterator();
    while (iter.hasNext()) {
        FileItem item = (FileItem) iter.next();
        if (item.isFormField()) {
            processFormField(item);
        } else {
            // item is a file.  write it
            File saveFolder = application.getRealPath("/file");
            File uploadedFile = new File(saveFolder, item.getName());
            item.write(uploadedFile);
    }Most of this code was hijacked from http://jakarta.apache.org/commons/fileupload/using.html
    Check it out. It will solve your memory problem by writing the file to disk temporarily if necessary.

  • InBuilt Apache Web Server v2.0.58 on Solaris 10

    Hi,
    We are working on a custom application which works with the inbuilt Apache Web Server on the Sun Solaris platform. Here are the details of the versions of the various components involved:
    Apache Web Server: Version 2.0.58
    Platform: SunOS 5.10 Generic_127111-03
    Our application is in the form of a shared library(.so binary) which is loaded into the Apache Web Server by mentioning the following directive in the Apache Web Server's configuration file (httpd.conf):
    LoadModule at_module "/var/apache2/logs/sample/sample.so"
    Where, sample.so is our application's binary
    And at_module is the name of the module.
    Problem details:
    For each request to the Apache Web server, the server maintains a table of type "apr_table_t" which contains the header environment from the request. There is a structure "request_rec" maintained in the httpd.h file:
    /** A structure that represents the current request */
    struct request_rec {
    /** The pool associated with the request */
    apr_pool_t *pool;
    /** Request method (e.g. GET, HEAD, POST, etc.) */
    const char *method;
    /** MIME header environment from the request */
    apr_table_t *headers_in;
    In our case, when we try to retrieve the address of "headers_in", we get a NULL Value. Please refer to the code for "sample-apache.cpp" program. Here it goes:
    ** Sample Program acting as a loadable Apache module.
    ** Overview:
    ** This sample program contains the necessary methods to make the program act as a module which can be loaded into the Apache ** Web Server. This program contains skeleton code which is necessary for any module which needs to be loaded into the Apache ** Web Server.
    ** Usage:
    ** 1) Compile and link this program to create a shared library.
    ** Compilation step:
    ** /opt/SUNWspro/bin/CC -c -o sample.o -I<Path to your include directory for Apache API's> sample-apache.cpp
    ** Link step:
    ** /opt/SUNWspro/bin/CC -G -compat=5 -mt -M map.SunOS -o sample.so sample.o -lsocket -lnsl -lpthread -ldl -lposix4 -lCstd ** -lCrun -lm -lw -lthread -lcx -lc
    ** 2) The sample program creates a module named "at_module" which can then be loaded in the Apache Web Server's configuration ** file, httpd.conf in the form of a configuration directive as shown below:
    ** LoadModule at_module "<Location of the shared library created from this sample program>"

    In this program, inside the access_checker() method, we try to retrieve the address of "headers_in" and get that as NULL:
    extern "C" int access_checker(request_rec *r)
    FILE * fp;
    fp = fopen("/var/apache2/logs/sample.txt", "a");
    fprintf(fp, "\n r->headers_in = %u, r->method = %s", r->headers_in, r->method);
    fclose(fp);
    return OK;
    Here is the output of the sample program after accessing the main page of the Web server:
    r->headers_in = 0, r->method = GET
    r->headers_in = 0, r->method = GET
    r->headers_in = 0, r->method = GET
    Though we are able to retrieve one member of the structure request_rec (method), we are not able to retrieve the address of the other member (headers_in).
    Observation:
    We made an interesting observation that when we used the same sample program with the inbuilt Apache 2.0.52 Web Server on Solaris, we were able to successfully retrieve the address of headers_in. Here are the details of the set-up which is working fine:
    Apache Web Server: Version 2.0.52
    Platform : SunOS 5.10 Generic_118822-30
    Thus, there is something different which has happened between the Sun's Solaris Apache Web Server's versions 2.0.52 and 2.0.58 which is making it unable to retrieve the address of the request headers (headers_in) in version 2.0.58.
    Can sombody please help me find out the reson for this difference and let me know if we need to change the way of retrieving the request headers for Solaris Apache 2.0.58.
    Thanks

    Ok, found the problem:
    Do not use this "SSL_RENEGOTIATE_NEVER" as a value for the environment variable:
    NSS_SSL_ENABLE_RENEGOTIATION=SSL_RENEGOTIATE_NEVER;export NSS_SSL_ENABLE_RENEGOTIATION
    instead, use "0":
    NSS_SSL_ENABLE_RENEGOTIATION=0;export NSS_SSL_ENABLE_RENEGOTIATION
    Add that line to your startserv script and it should disable ssl renegotiation permanently.

  • Problem with inbuilt Solaris Apache Web Server v 2.0.58

    Hi,
    Set-up:
    We are working on a custom application which works with the inbuilt Apache Web Server on the Sun Solaris platform. Here are the details of the versions of the various components involved:
    Apache Web Server: Version 2.0.58
    Platform: SunOS 5.10 Generic_127111-03
    Our application is in the form of a shared library(.so binary) which is loaded into the Apache Web Server by mentioning the following directive in the Apache Web Server's configuration file (httpd.conf).
    LoadModule at_module "/var/apache2/logs/sample/sample.so"
    where, sample.so is our application's binary
    and at_module is the name of the module.
    httpd.conf file has been attached for your reference.
    Attachments:
    httpd.conf - Apache Web Server's configuration file.
    sample-apache.cpp - Sample program which is showing the problem.
    httpd.h - Apache Software Foundation's file which contains the structure "request_rec" that represents the current request.
    Problem summary:
    For each request to the Apache Web server, the server maintains a table of type "apr_table_t" which contains the header environment from the request. There is a structure "request_rec" maintained in the httpd.h file:
    /** A structure that represents the current request */

    /** Request method (eg. GET, HEAD, POST, etc.) */

    /** MIME header environment from the request */
    apr_table_t *headers_in;
    In our case, when we try to retrieve the address of "headers_in", we get a NULL Value. Please refer to the attached "sample-apache.cpp" program. In this program, inside the access_checker() method, we try to retrieve the address of "headers_in" and get that as NULL:

         fclose(fp);
         return OK;

    r->headers_in = 0, r->method = GET
    r->headers_in = 0, r->method = GET
    r->headers_in = 0, r->method = GET
    Though we are able to retrieve one member of the structure request_rec (method), we are not able to retrieve the address of the other member (headers_in).

    I am requesting someone to kindly shed light on this difference and let us know if we need to change the way of retrieving the request headers for Solaris Apache 2.0.58.
    Thanks,
    Atul.

    The only way you can achieve it is by running the web server to listen on port 80
    Please change the port in your httpd.conf file for the webserver and restart it.
    If any other processes are running/using on port 80 on that machine, then please stop them, otherwise you will not be able to achieve your requirement.

  • Where does WebLogic fit with/beside our custom web-server?

    Hi,
    I'm just getting started with the WebLogic Application Server and wondering
    what it can do for our setup, which looks like the following:
    Our web server has a plug-in which parses each html file requested, and
    if it contains any of our "custom" tags, passes it on to another "engine".
    This "engine" uses our own database, and object server to make queries,
    and turn the custom tags into standard HTML. Some custom-tags include
    custom links to other "extended" pages, which the "web server extension"
    converts to normal HTML links to the custom pages, which will of course
    be caught in turn by the intermediary parser when navigated to.
    There are probably ways we can stream-line and minimize the steps required
    to assemble the standard HTML. However, if anyone has some ideas,
    I'm basically just wondering how WebLogic can help improve our architechture
    and the performance, with minimal changes at first. Since we do so much
    page assembly by parsing the custom tags, I have difficulty seeing how
    WebLogic could do caching. The HTML that a custom tag "expands" to
    may be state dependent on the underlying database/object server!
    Any comments/ideas much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andy

    If you need an extra "ZAP" to get people to return,
    your site is probably lacking good content. People
    won't go to your site just for your fancy applets and
    flash animations, you need to have content. Why do so
    many people use Google instead of Yahoo? Because
    Google's homepage loads faster without all the ads and
    other crap that you get on other search sites. Also,
    because google performs searches faster than any other
    site. Basically you need good content and good
    service without distractions.I get the 'content is king' bit although I tend to disagree with the effect that multimedia has on users. I have a MSc by research which looked at the effects of animation on users of e-commerce sites. It does have a positive effect (it did with my results anyway) - hence I would like to build more multimedia into the web site (under construction).
    A combination of fast download, intuitive navigation and clear layout can improve usability.
    I disagree with the Jakob Nielsen school of thought i.e. text-only web sites with no graphics are the ultimate. He is a usability expert but usability per se does not improve web site stickiness. I digress.
    I want to do the server side stuff mentioned above - it is not a question of just pointing at files on the server...if it were that easy, I would not be posting and would hook all my pages to a tight back-end. The much higher wages of web developers compared with web designers should highlight this skill difference.
    Also, not many web sites generate dynamic web pages completely differently to each individual user. Broadband (DSL) will bury the text-only 14.4 kbs modem type site (a disgusting remnant of 1995 which was severly restricted due to low modem speeds).

  • "Error creating JVM" in iPlanet Web Server 4.1SP7 when configured with JDK

    I need to configure iPlanet Web Server 4.1SP7 to execute JSP/Servlets on itself and lookup EJBs kept on IBM Websphere Application Server 4.0.1, both running on different servers with Sun Solaris.
    Whenever, I try to configure iPlanet Web Server 4.1 SP7 to use IBM's JDK 1.3.0 (provided with WAS 4.0) to lookup an EJB, iPlanet server stops as soon as it starts, giving:
    [07/Feb/2003:11:52:38] info ( 2788): Internal error: unable to create JVM acquire failed1:52:38] info ( 2788): NSServletSession::(late)init - JVMControl:: [07/Feb/2003:11:52:38] failure ( 2788): Failure to load JVM (check your JRE) on(late) NSServletLateInit: unknown error): conf_init: Error running init function
    Evenif, I configure it using Sun's JDK 1.4.0.03, iPlanet wS keeps on giving "Exiting JVM" in the error log..
    Now, I want to know, which JVMs are supported by iPlanet Web Server 4.1 SP7, that can be used to lookup deployed components (EJBs/Datasource) on Websphere Application Server 4.0.1?
