Why can't iOS Mail create POP account type?

I've created a new email address with my ISP.
I've created a new email account on my desktop Mac (Mail 8.2).
Now I tried to add the new email account in my iPad (iOS 8.1.3), but it doesn't give me the option to pick POP as account type. The credentials checks out and it becomes an IMAP email account! The Option modifier key doesn't seem to apply.
What am I missing?

No. It does not exist because "many people prefer it". It exists because email providers simply haven't killed off that service yet. POP3 is ancient. It was never designed to be used with multiple devices. You stand a higher chance of losing information when it doesn't play nice with the 'leave messages on server after download' request, which was tacked on to the standard as an afterthought, than you do using IMAP or Exchange protocols.
The only reason it still exists at all is because it doesn't cost the providers anything to leave it turned on. It's there. It "works", more or less... why bother disabling it?
1. That has more to do with how you manage your email than anything else. I'd much rather file it into a folder that makes sense than wade through hundreds of emails in my inbox trying to remember what I've already dealt with and what I haven't.
2. No, IMAP retrieval is not "glitchy". That's a problem with your email provider. Not IMAP.
3. False. Your perception of it may be different, but POP3 is not inherently "faster" than IMAP.
4. Or you could you know... just make backups on a regular basis.
I use multiple gmail accounts (IMAP), and multiple Exchange accounts. Having to manually manage those on multiple devices would be a nightmare. I don't want to have to delete or file something more than once. Life's too short to waste time like that.

  • Why can't Mail create POP account type?

Version 8.2 seems to allow only IMAP.
But I want POP for my new email address.
    What am I missing?

    In mail:
    Mail -> Add Account...
Select "Add Other Mail Account..." and click "Continue".
Fill in the account details in the next dialog. When you've done that, hold down the Option/Alt key. The "Create" button will change to "Next". While still holding Option, click "Next".
In the next dialog you will be able to select either IMAP or POP for the incoming mail server. Don't you just love Apple's way of making things "simple" sometimes?
As Kirk says, though, if your email provider doesn't offer a POP server you will be stuck with IMAP.

  • Why can't IOS users create PDF files anymore?

WHy can I no longer create PDF documents from my IPad?  I used to be able to use this feature, now it is gone!  Why can't IOS users access this feature?

    Hi Timo,
The Create PDF feature is part of Adobe PDF Pack (the paid subscription service) and is used to convert a non-PDF file format to PDF.
I see that the "Getting Started" PDF document is opened in the screenshot above.  You cannot convert a PDF document to a PDF document.
The error message is trying to tell you that you need to open the "supported format" (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, RTF) then tap Create PDF to convert it to a PDF document.
Please take a look at the following document about Adobe PDF Pack (which also includes Export PDF).

Do you actually want to covert a document to PDF using Create PDF?   If not, please let us know what you are trying to do so that we can assist you.  Thank you.

  • Can't send mail to POP Account which has attachment or signature

Since installing the Update 10.4.6, I have been unable to send email to my pop account which has either a signature or an attachment (when there is no attachment or signature it works fine). I have cleared the caches using tiger cache cleaner. I have tried adding a new user account to mail. It doesn't work in Entourage either. I've reinstalled Mail. What else do you recommend?
Prior to installing the update, mail worked great for over a year!
    Additional Information:
Whenever I press the send icon, the mail message disappears, then in the activity viewer it gives the message “Delivering message / Sending data (28% done) and hangs there for a long time and finally gives the following message:
Cannot send message using the server XXX
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
Whenever I send an email with text and a signature, the activity viewer it gives the message “Delivering message / Sending data (100% done) and hangs there for an extremely long time and finally gives the same message.

For sending mail the POP server is not important what you need to check are the settings of the SMTP server. Verify the settings of the SMTP server again and compare it to your settings on your iMac.
Checked SMTP settings and they are identical to the working iMac. I had not changed any settings on my MBP when it stopped sending, plus it did work briefly last night with those settings, so I don't see how it could have anything to do with my settings being incorrect.
The only thing even remotely different that I did prior to this happening was to use it away from home. I was out of town and used someone else's wifi to send some emails, but can't see how that should matter. It was the same ISP that I use at home, so I never even had to change settings for remote access. I never touched a thing, but when I got home I could no longer send emails.

  • Z10 Can Receive E-mails from POP Account But Cannot Send/Reply

I am getting seriously frustrated with the inability to send e-mail from this Z10 (bought on 3/28) through my POP account!
I have been able to set up and successfully send through a personal Gmail account but not my "work" POP account.  Everything I have read in forums and discussed with my IP and Verizon Wireless points to a bug in the BB10 software.  In BB7, even a POP account could be set up very simply and reliably.  That was the beauty of BB - simple and reliable e-mail.
I am getting nowhere trying to find a fix or workaround.  I reeeeeally wanted to believe that BB was back and that this would be a good phone for me, a BB fan (my third BB btw), but am just a day or two away from giving up and returning the thing.  What good is a BlackBerry if you can't send e-mails????  Please help!

I have a similar problem. I have three email accounts and two work perfectly (a hosted server and a comcast). However, my Optonline email will not send out attachments or HTML when hitting Reply or Forward. The receiver sees the basic text response and the following (below). Optonline uses port 587 and i think POP, no SSL Optonline, BB and ATT are all looking at it, but no solution yet.

  • Help please: can't receive mail on POP account.

Can someone help me? I can't receive emails on my POP account. I am using 10.6.8 os and apple mail 4.6. I'm able to send messages using port 587. Trying to get ready for business launch on Wednesday. Thanks for your help!

Just curious - were you ever able to receive mail or did you recently set this account up and encounter the problem?
As a paying Dreamhost customer, you should have access to their 24/7 tech support. The basic Apple mac.app account set-up is very straight-forward (at least with web mail).
If this is a new account with no received messages, simply deleting it and going through the set-up again is no big deal. Remember, use IMAP instead of POP3 to receive messages. POP3 pulls the only copy of the message off the server and delivers it to your mail client/computer. Since there is no back-up copy of the data on the server, this is bad news if anything happens to it locally.
Here's a basic tutorial on adding/deleting accounts (just in case):
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84cYMuVsLp0
Check out this thread as well - appears that even after deleting an account the name of the old account might remain:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4094214?start=0&tstart=0
To summarize, I would try the following:
1.) Contact Dreamhost and explain your issue - it could be a problem on their end. Don't be shy about using their tech support; you pay for it!
2.) If Dreamhost finds nothing amiss on their end, you could delete and re-enable your account via mail.app (keeping in mind the caveats about backing-up all received POP3 messages and the potential sender account bug from the thread). Use IMAP if possible.
3.) If that does not work for you, try another Mail client. I recommend Thunderbird, but there are other free options:
    http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/communication-roundup/8-awesome-alternatives-to -mail-app-on-your-mac/
I doubt that this is causing the problem, but you could also disable your firewall (System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall) and see if that changes anything.
Hope one of these works for you.

  • Mail creates POP account automatically

I'm trying to add a Comcast account to my Mail.  Comcast has both POP3 and IMAP accounts and I want the IMAP; I have all the settings info. But when I add an account in Mail, it asks me for the username/password/email address, and then automatically proceeds to create a POP3 account! There seems to be no place to choose IMAP specifically or enter the server info manually - it just goes right for the POP3 based on my comcast email address. How to overcome this?

Yep, but that wasn't my problem. I've got the IMAP settings and been through the Comcast approval etc.  My problem is (was) that the Apple Mail automatically configured the account as POP3 and didn't give me an opportunity to say that it was IMAP, as soon as it saw the comcast.net email address.  I have now solved it, by putting in a fake email address, and when Mail can't find it to autoconfigure, it lets you set the account type manually.

  • Mail - Create POP Account

When I try to create a POP account in Mail I am presented with the “Add Account” series of windows. However, it seems to start with the assumption that
I wish to create an IMAP account and automatically enters the appropriate data for doing so. How do I get it to recognise that I want to set up a POP account or, alternatively, how do I bypass the automated set-up process and do it manually? I am using Mail 5.1.

Click [+], enter your Name/Email/Password, then hold down the 'Option(Alt)' key, click Continue, and you will be able to select IMAP or POP

  • Can't create POP account

It happens that I can't create POP accounts, while I do easily with Entourage.
The same data in Entourage work while in Mail don't.
I can't understand why. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?
    Thanks

    Hector,
A subtle difference between Mail and Entourage, is in the use of Username. In Mail, what you enter in the Username box of Mail Preferences must be exactly what is required by the provider of the POP server -- this will either be the true username, which is the portion of the email address in front of the "@", which is how it is done for a .mac, or for some providers it must be the entire email address, repeated as the Username entry (this is how it must be for Gmail). You must test with each, or find a support document that provides the format you must enter as the Username.
I think Entourage, at least sometimes, is able to derive the Username from the email address, and negotiate through this choice.
Let me know if changing the form of the Username entry will resolve this.

  • How can I configure Mail for pop servers when it wants to make it an IMAP account?

When starting Mail for the first time, I enter my account credentials and Mail sets it up as an IMAP account.  For the past several years, I've needed to configure the pop server settings for this account on different devices.  The IMAP configuration Mail came up with won't work.  How can

  • Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options

Why can't I set up POP/IMAP emails for my Muse website in Business Catalyst? I don't have the option 'use this service for email as well as hosting the website' under Advanced options.
Is this due to my Hosting Plan? Appreciate any answers.

Your site is a CCM site which is on a WebBasics plan (This plan does not provide hosted emails on Business Catalyst).
If you want to create email addresses on this site, you would need to setup your email server elsewhere and configure the MX records on your site to point to that external mail server.
If you want to use Business Catalyst's hosted email services you would need to use a WebBasics+ or higher siteplan. To upgrade your CCM free site, Access your site's admin area  -> Site Management -> Upgrade Now -> choose the desired site plan and billing frequency -> Add personal and credit card details -> Submit.
Please refer this article about setting up email accounts on your BC site: http://docs.businesscatalyst.com/user-manual#!/site-settings/email-users

  • Can you move mail from one account to another?

I Use Bellsouth as my ISP. As other Posters have noted they are one of the ISPs that won't accept outgoing mail when you are on the Edge Network (even more frustrating since they are owned by AT&T!). When I go out, I have to change my outgoing mail server to cwmx.com which allows me to send messages and reply to e-mails over the Edge network or random Wi-Fis I pick up.
However, cwmx.com doesn't work over my home network...I have to reinsert mail.bellsouth.net:25 in the outgoing server. It is a real pain.
So, I also have a G-mail account. I thought if while I was out, and I went to iPhone/settings/mail/default account, I could select G-mail as the default and I could respond to e-mails that came in on my Bellsouth account via G-mail. Not so fast, Kemosabe!
So, does anyone know a way to move an incoming message from one email account to another on the iPhone so you can reply using a different account?
Just as an anecdotal observation, seems like Apple's iPhone partner, AT&T and all of it's children could give less than two hoots about Apple, Safari, etc. They seem pretty stuck in the PC world.

Formally I always used my ISP's email account as my primary account and when moving or if deciding to change ISPs (I moved twice within a two year period of time), this required changing my email address so I switched my primary email account to a .Mac account so my ISP doesn't matter. It has an authenticated SMTP server so I can send messages with my account regardless which ISP I'm using for my internet access.
A Gmail account would provide the same for you, is free and can be accessed as a POP account or IMAP account with any email client on your computer and with the iPhone's email client. An IMAP account would also provide for keeping all server stored mailboxes synchronized between both email clients used and the ability to save Sent messages on the server with both so sending a message with the iPhone's email client will be available in the account's Sent mailbox with the email client used on your computer automatically and vice-versa. You can also create additional server stored mailboxes with the email client used on your computer for storing received or sent messages by by category and these additional server stored mailboxes will be available with the iPhone's email client automatically.
This is not possible with a POP account and BellSouth provides POP account access only.
I understand it is a pain to change your email address but with the combined benefits of a Gmail account which is free and has a good spam filter on the server, I think you should give this some serious consideration.

  • Folders in Mail with POP Account

    Hi!
I would create folders in Mail with POP account. It is possible? Why not?
    Thanks!

As James has explained - you need an IMAP email account in order to create additional mailboxes or folders on the iPad. Even though you may be able to create a folder on your computer - which is simply a locally stored folder - or on the POP account server, those will not sync to the iPad POP email account.
