Why did Apple drop iDVD?

It appears that Apple has dropped iDVD reasoning that "most" people share movies via the web.  This is not correct.  Anyone with a robust home movie library, developed over the years (such as with children), can tell you there is no way any web service such as YouTube and others can house such a library of this size.  The web is fleeting.  Home movies (on DVD) are meant to be permanent. This is a terrible decision on the part of Apple.
Is anyone aware of any negative feedback Apple has received or any Apple considerations for brining the product back?
The ability to use "chapter markers" in iMovie for easy forwarding by chapter in iDVD was a really nice feature.  The loss of connectivity between iMovie and iDVD results in a loss of this important feature, even if you do determine a way to import a current iMovie file into an older version if iDVD.

It appears that Apple has dropped iDVD reasoning that "most" people share movies via the web.  This is not correct.
That is not why Apple is moving away from optical media.   Apple is the largest media company in the world. They sell nothing on disk.  It is to their financial advantage to have the physical possession of movies go away.  ( but I fail to see how it benefits the consumer. )
Apple wants users to buy the Apple TV stuff and online content. Apple and other media companies, want to get rid of the physical media so they can promote the online streaming business even more.  The game and movie industry is huge.  Without a physical media, you won't be able to buy used CDs, Movies, or games anymore.  The DVD and CD era is not over.
Another factor that is often overlooked is people's innate desire to hold something tangible in their hands; to build a library of films.   There's definitely a psychological component to the accumulation of material goods, and I always get more of a rush from receiving a Blu-ray in the post than I do from streaming or downloading a film.
I have Netflix, and it is great for TV shows but I love owning a library of films on my shelves.
I strongly recommend that you leave feedback for Apple on the link provided above (be nice).   Moreover, iDVD works perfectly with all of Apple's latest hardware and software.  iDVD is tested with the latest hardware and software.  Continue to use iDVD.

  • When and Why Did Apple Drop The 160GB Classic Ipod

    Hi
I was going to go and finally buy a 160GB Ipod tomrrow.I see they don't even list it anymore on Apples site and Future-shop doesn't even list it on the site.
They only make a 120GB Now
When Did they Drop this and why???
Also Do any stores still have them in Stock???
I won't be spending the money on only a 120GB if thats all they make now
I've had my Ipod Mini 4GB since 2005 and thought it was time for a upgrade.
Please do tell me if Apple still makes the 160GB Ipod
    thanks

Apple has discontinued the 160GB. You can buy one online still, but not from Apple. Or buy a used one off Craig's List.
P.S. Actually Apple is still selling refurbished 160GB on it's site, if you want to go that route. I also found some new ones on Amazon. Buy.com may have some too.

  • Why did apple drop NBC?

NBC has so many great shows. Now you can only get NBC shows from Amazon.com, who doesn't support the mac or the ipod. Itunes would be so much better with every TV show. *I want NBC content back!!!*

To add on To Deb, NBC was also reportedly interested in getting a percentage in iPod sales - another thing that Apple would not be happy with.
Anyway, NBC opened HULU after dropping Apple. Not compatible with the iPod and requires internet connection which made me say no.

  • Why did Apple drop support on Windows XP 64-bit, but not on 32-bit?

I have Windows XP 64-bit and do not feel the need to get a new computer or upgrade the operating system.  What I wonder is why Apple still makes iTunes for 32-bit XP and not 64-bit XP?

Not sure why you would expect anyone here to know the exact answer to your question considering none of us work for Apple, but it's probably because 1.  XP64 is horrible.  2.  It's user base is and always has been low.  3.  XP64 was no doubt geard toward corporations, while XP32 and iTunes are consumer oriented versions.

  • Lanyard headphones: why did apple discontinue them for ipod nano?

i'd love to purchase the new generation of ipod nano (i need more HD space on my 2nd gen ipod nano), but i have a basic need for the lanyard style headphones. i can't bring myself to wear the old style headphones (i have many bad memories of dropping the lanyard-less ipods).
i have never had a problem with the lanyard design in the 4+ years that i've used them. why did apple stop production?
and, more importantly, does apple have any plans to bring back lanyard headphones in the future?
    thank you.

Since we are all end users like you, nobody here would have the answers to such questions.  Only apple knows.  Either way, I suggest you leave feedback to Apple through one of their feedback channels.

  • Why did Apple get rid of the DVD slot in the MacBook Pro

Why did Apple get rid of the DVD slot in the MacBook Pro?

Because relatively few people used it and Apple wanted to decrease the size/price of the computers.

  • Why did Apple raise its prices overnight by $200 on the iMac, including refurbished models.

Other than greed and trying to narrow the spread between the price of the old iMacs and the just-announced new iMac, why did Apple raise its prices overnight by $200 on the iMac, including refurbished models? Their existing product component costs didn't increase overnight.

why did apple mail get much worse with lion osx?  I can't add recipients without copy and paste?

I went through updates on my three newest Macs this week.  As I stated I'm talking about iTunes 10.5.1 (42).  I am checking for updates now and I see 10.5.2 is now available.  I'll know in about 15 minutes if this issue is fixed or not.
    15 minutes later:
I must have updated this PPC G5 a day or two before iTunes 10.5.2 came out.  I was able to update to 10.5.2 (11) and this copy/paste bug is fixed.  I'm happy again.

  • Why did Apple remove many of my songs from the cloud?

Why did Apple remove many of my songs from the cloud?

Maybe they don't have the same taste in music as you
Apple don't make or 'own' songs - other companies allow Apple to sell them. Sometimes these rights owners remove the songs from the store. Apple can't do much about that. You should make backups of any purchases, since Apple cannot guarantee they will be available in future.

  • Why did Apple take MIDI support out of QuickTime 10?

MIDI may not be a prevalent standard, but there's still quite a lot of music written in it.  Why would Apple drop it?  It seems like a giant departure away from Apple's usual philosophy of "everything just works." If I wanted to use an OS where I had to download an entire application every time I needed a new CODEC, I'd still be using Windows!  This was just a bad idea.

Understood, but that seems kludgy and seems to fly in the face of the entire Apple "simplify" philosophy.  There's no reason for Apple to drop a standard that encompasses billions of existing files.  The whole point of MacOS and iOS is that they just work.

  • Why did Apple discontinue iPhoto for iOS?

Why did Apple discontinue iPhoto for iOS?
This app offered great features such as the ability to format your pictures and journal and, add comments and context.
It's disappointing to be forced to migrate away especially when this is a paid app ($4.99). Many other companies may stop supporting paid apps, but at least you can still use the apps.

Apple did not say why, so we can only speculate.
But have a look at what has changed in iOS 8. http://www.apple.com/ios/developer/
The basic frameworks, that support image editing apps and any graphics apps have been completely replaced by newer frameworks, for example PhotoKit. Also, the Photos.app and its library are very different, with the Camera Roll being replaced by the "Recent Activity" album.
iPhoto used "Photos" to access all photos on the device and did not them separately. The code would have needed to be completely rewritten. Probably, Apple did not want to develop iPhoto a second time, in addition to the new "Photos", but is relying on the third party developers to supplement Photos with extensions:
    PhotoKit
Developers can enable their photo apps to edit photos directly in the Camera Roll without having to import them first.
    Photo Editing
Developers can embed their filters and editing tools directly into the Photos app. So you could apply third‑party effects to images without leaving the app where you view your photos.

  • HT1771 why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies

why did apple erase ichat? its so much better than messages and now I cant video chat with my ichat buddies!!!

    HI,
    Apple did not erase iChat.
Messages in Mountain Lion is iChat +
The plus bit is the fact you can iMessage iOS devices.
All the other features that were in iChat are still there.
If you upgraded Lion to get to Mountain Lion then in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars you probably list all the iChat Accounts (Screen Names and IDs).
You may need to enable them for Messages.
They should also show up in Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
Once those accounts (AIM and Jabber) are Enabled they can be viewed in a Combined Buddy List
Windows Menu > Buddies (Or using CMD + 1 Keystrokes)
In the General Section of the Preferences you can Unlink these Buddy lists.
The Green icons or highlight a Buddy and then using the Buddies Menu or the icons at the Bottom of the Buddy list can be used the same way to start Video or Audio Only chats.
The iMessage "Account" is only for texting iOS devices or other people using their Apple ID on a Mac in Messages.
It is an account "in addition to" rather than "taking over from" the services that iChat can join.

  • Why did Apple ruin iWork? How do I downgrade back to 09'?

Why did Apple ruin iWork? How do I downgrade back to 09'?
The new iWork is a major major major major dissappointment. I'm so let down by Apple. Perhaps it was their goal to bolster 3rd parties like MS Office, cause that's what I was just forced to use again . . . .

Now Apple really gave me another good definition of "There is no such a free lunch."
This new "free" iWork really cost me a terrible headache, huge time lost, and horrible frustration. No time to give Apple feedback because I am busy fixing all my iWork's files.
Upgrade should be adding new better features to what already exist.

  • Why did Apple omit the Panorama feature in Camera on the Ipad, when they did the IOS6 update?

Why did Apple omit the Panorama feature in Camera on the Ipad, when they did the IOS 6 Update? They included this feature on the iPod touch (5th gen) so why not on the iPad?

I was on vacation in a national park and saw people using their iPads as a video camera...one of them standing in the  middle of a 'river' (read really large stream) at the time.
I'm going to also go with the supposition of it being a different camera and probably different video handling processor. The iPhone is quite far ahead of the iPad camera wise, so probably has better protocols in place to handle images, especially something as complex as the 'live photo stitch' of the panorama.
many existing cameras take what the panorama was, a 'photo stitch' where mulitple side by side photos are stitched together into one large panorama. This just appears to do it 'live' instead of individual shots that need to be processed on a comptuer to make the panorama.
