Why do I have a blank category in my Spotlight preferences?

Hello all!  Long time listener, first time poster...
I was looking through my Spotlight Preference Pane and noticed at the bottom of the list there was a blank #16 category.  I tried deleting the Spotlight preferences but that didn't make it go away.  Is that a problem?  Anyone know what this 16th category is and/or why it's there?
Thanks for your help!
--Jeffrey

I also had this problem with a blank #16th category on my Macbook Pro.
I noticed it after I had uninstalled Xcode. Deleting the Spotlight p.list or editing it made no difference.
On my iMac (on which I had never installed Xcode, and with 15 categories in Spotlight preferences, also running Lion) i noticed under Macintosh HD there were 5 folders: Applications, Library, System, Users, Downloads; and 1 alias: User Guides and Information.
On my MBP there was an additional folder: Developer.
Not sure if this is because of an uninstall issue from Xcode, but I deleted the Developer folder and Spotlight is back to 15 categories under Spotlight preferences.
Obviously dont do this if you are still using Xcode or any other Apps dependent on the Developer folder!
Hope that helps.

  • I upgraded to lion and Spotlight has stopped working.  I have added and removed volumes in Spotlight Preferences, but still no joy.

I belive I stopped the index at the initial launch after install.  I can't find a way to restart the indexing.
Below is an example of what happens when I search using Spotlight.
    Any help appreciated.

I have Harman Kardon Soundsticks but they are connected via USB. They are recognised without any drivers - I have connected them to three Macs and they never needed drivers.
If you connect via minijack, I don't see how the Mac can recongise them other than compensate according to the impedence, but I may be wrong.
Do you get output from them when you select Line Out or Headphones from Audio System Preferences?

  • Why SXMSPMAST and SXMSPMAST2 have diferent size category

In PI 7.0 size category of tables SXMSPMAST and SXMSPMAST2 was 4 (200.000). After installing SP 18 I found that category increase till 6(830.000). But it increase only for SXMSPMAST2.
Why they have diferent size category?

You can use TA: SE11 => "Database table: SXMSPMAST" => "Technical settings" => change size category to "6". Then activate your changes!
A transport will be generated for this change which has to go from DEV => QA => Prod system!

  • My  Macbook Air wakes up with a blank screen. Why do I have to shut down and start up to wake it up?

I use Mountain Lion on a macbook Air. When it goes to sleep  it wakes up with a blank screen, I have to shut down and start up again to wake it up. Can anyone help?

I had a similar thing on an old MacBook Pro where if I closed the lid, then reopened it before the sleep cycle took over, it would have a blank screen. I had to close the lid until the power light pulsed, then it would wake normally.
    Any similarities?

  • Why do I have to set the PrincipalName property on my discovered ApplicationComponent instances?

In the simple example below I define three classes:
    MyComputerRoleClass (with base Microsoft.Windows.ComputerRole)
    MyLocalApplicationClass (with base Microsoft.Windows.LocalApplication)
    MyApplicationComponentClass (with base Microsoft.Windows.ApplicationComponent)
As well as a hosting relationship
    MyLocalApplicationClassHostsMyApplicationComponentClass
    that let's MyLocalApplicationClass host MyApplicationComponentClasses.
In a timed PowerShell discovery targeting the RootManagementServer (Root Management Server Emulator) I create
    1 MyComputerRoleClass instance
    1 MyLocalApplicationClass instance and
2 MyApplicationComponentClass instances hosted on the instance of MyLocalApplicationClass
By setting the PrincipalName property for the instances of MyComputerRoleClass
and MyLocalApplicationClass I implicitly create hosting relationship instances of
    Microsoft.Windows.ComputerHostsComputerRole and Microsoft.Windows.ComputerHostsLocalApplication
    respectively.
But why do I have to set PrincipalName on instances of MyApplicationComponentClass as well? If I don't I'll get this error:

  • Why is my itunes a blank screen?

Why is my itunes a blank screen when i press the itunes app

    Hi Mikhailwong,
When troubleshooting iTunes Store connection issues, the following articles provide the best information:
First, try signing out of your account in Settings > iTunes & App Store. Once signed out, go ahead and sign back in.
iOS: Changing the signed-in iTunes Store Apple ID account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1311
If the above did not resolve your issue, refer to the following:
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368
If you haven't been able to connect to the iTunes Store:
    - Make sure that your iOS software is up to date by connecting your iOS device to iTunes and clicking on Check for Update in your device's Summary page in iTunes.
    - Check and verify that you are in range of a Wi-Fi router or base station. If you are on a 3G capable device, make sure that cellular data is turned on from Settings > General > Cellular.
    - Check to make sure you have an active internet connection. You can check the User Guide for your device for help with connecting to the internet.
    - Check to make sure other devices (portable computers, for example) are able to connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the internet.
    - Try resetting (turning off and then on again) your Wi-Fi router
    - If the issue still persists see, iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connectionsor iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Making a book, this time cannot put photos on page 2, why do I have to waste this page now?

I have made a number of books, this time am using the large book format (2nd time I have) Cannot put photos on page 2, it remains blank and lay out doesn't offer an option. I seriously do not want to start book with page 3, page 1 being script. Cannot over-ride current option. When and why was it changed? Is there any way to overcome this?

What theme are you using?  In the themes that I've tested the first page, 1, is the page right after the blank inside cover.

I'm using iPhoto 8.1.2.  If you're not getting this try the following; make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete  the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot and the option to rebuild the small thumbnails.
See if the book numbering changes.

  • Why doesn't right-click work in Bookmarks menu anymore? Why do I have to open some Bookmark manager to edit/delete Bookmarks?!

Until this 29 update, I was able to simply right-click in the Bookmarks menu on any Bookmark and do whatever I wanted like open it's properties to edit it or simply delete it straight from that menu. Now, suddenly, that right-click menu is all blanked out. It's only usable when you go to the Bookmark manager. Why was it necessary to forbid people from deleting and editing Bookmarks from the Bookmark menu?! Why do I have to now go through some extra steps of opening the Bookmark manager then finding the Bookmark to edit or delete it when I could have done all that straight from the menu?!

  • Why do I have 310MB of "other data" after restoring as new?

I just restored my device as new in an attempt to get rid of all the "other" data that was on my phone. After doing so, there is still 310MB on my phone. What is this and why do I have it? I used iExplorer and even a data recovery software that lets you preview data and neither showed any data. Any help?

OmniDiskSweeper and Grand perspective do not delete files.  They simply are tools to show what you have on your MBA and you have to take action if you want to delete data or transfer the data to an external HDD.
The title OTHER is not very descriptive and some people get nervous as a result.  One should not focus on the title of the category, but the actual files that may be included by the OSX in that category.  Based on your last post, the game that you deleted was vied by the OSX as an OTHER file.
    Ciao.

  • Why should I have Flash?

I'm using a not long acquired laptop while I either sort out a problem on a tower or put another one in instead. I get quite a few blank spaces on webpages that ask me to install a plugin. I assume these are either for Java or Flash. I've not had a problem with this as I block adverts and most of these blanks don't seem to affect my use of the pages. Apart from looking at flashing and moving adverts and the unnecessary showing off of web designers, is there any any good reason why I should have Flash? There is a Microsoft version present in a folder but it doesn't seem to do anything - may not be installed. (Java is desperately trying to get me to update, but I'm not going to until I find out why I should need that too.) I am a long time computer user (Mac and PC) going back to MS-DOS 3.0 and the first Macs and writing COBOL on 8088s even. I just get fed up with frippery. (Adverts are blocked because I've never found one selling anything I want. I realise they pay the bills, but I'm not going to click on them so why display them?) I do realise that asking this here is not going to do much for my popularity...

Your popularity is not in jeopardy.  There's no need to change your ways.  Since creating advertisements is a minimscule part of what Flash is used for, you may end up missing quite a bit of useful web content, but you won't miss what you don't know exists.  It's really entirely up to you.  You can always try it for awhile and if you find your browsing habits don't have need for it, then just get rid of it.
As far as the java bit goes,  my other machine is constantly reminding me that there is a new update available.  Since I can't get rid of the notice, I'm stuck with that, but I otherwise have no problem with what's installed so I don't plan to process the upgrade anytime soon.

Impossible, there are zero, as in none, zip, nadda viruses for OS X. If you have viruses on it they are for MS Windows and will not affect OS X. I suspect the hard disk has crashed, if you have backup then it's not a big deal to have it changed, just take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for service. If you have not been backing it up you may be in for a painful lesson on why backup is critical.

  • Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?

After doing the iOS7 update (and iOS7.0.2) I decided to add my music to my phone (I never had music on it before).
I discovered that there were 20 very random and obscure broadway songs that were on my iPhone in addition to the 60 songs I just synced. They had the iCloud icon by them, unlike the songs I had just added.
After doing research I found that the broadway songs were technically "purchased" on iTunes although they are not songs I would have ever purchased- in fact I have never once purchased anything on iTunes.  This isn't my worry though, I am assuming it must have been some random free download I did at some point?
I went to settings > music > and turned show all music off.  This did NOT work for all of them and only solved the problem 80%.  There are still 4 of the random song on my iPhone. They DO NOT show up in my iTunes library on my computer and don't even exist on my computer.
With the other songs I can left swip and delete but these 4 songs won't!  Why won't these four songs left swipe?
I am going crazy and have tried restarting my phone, restarting iTunes, re-syncing, turning off the iCloud.  NOTHING WORKS.
Please help.  I am a normally a very smart and tech-savvy person and I cannot for the life of me figure this out.  I don't want to wipe everything- which as a solution is a pretty weak solution.
Why won't certain songs left swipe to delete off my phone when I am in the music app?
Why do I have extra songs on my phone that don't appear on iTunes on my computer?
Where did these songs come from and how do I get rid of them?
    Much thanks!

I had the exact same issue!! Seriously p*ssed me off when I checked out my ITunes purchased items (via my computer) and noticed that most of the additional tracks listed on my IPhone playlist was listed there too. However, I never authorized any purchases!!  (I have actually written Apple Support asking for a full refund of all tracks listed on my purchased list)
Be careful when you swipe your finger to the left/right on those "additional" tracks on your IPhone playlist... I'm pretty sure that the cloud symbol is an option to download or automatically buy those tracks.
    Solution for the problem:
1 - go to your IPhone settings
    2 - choose "iTunes & App Store"
3 - go to "Show All" & "Music"
4 - turn off "Music" by moving the bar to the left (it should be a white color once you turn it off)
    Should solve your problem :~)
