Why do I have a rate-independent delay in my PID Loop?

I am preparing to use an ETS Realtime target to do some fast PID loops. I have a 3 GHz P4 machine with a PCI-6259 DAQ card, ruuning LabVIEW 7.1RT with NI-DAQ 7.3 for the PCI-6259 board. For starters I decided to just do some speed tests, with the AO putting out exactly the value measured by the AI, with no PID calculations. I would expect the output to be an exact duplicate of the input, but jagged and with a small delay of approximately 1 loop time. What I see on the scope is that there is a fixed 0.1 msec delay between the input and output that is independent of the loop rate. I can run the loop up to 100 kHz rate. With this fast loop rate the output is a faithful replication of the input, but shifted by 0.1 msec. This delay will cause big problems in a real PID loop, since this is several sample periods. At first I thought that there was a buffer that was delaying the samples, but if that were the case the delay would be proportional to the sampling time and not independent of it. The delay is not in the loop itself, which can operate up to 10 times faster than the observed delay. I have attached the vi and configuration sub-vis. Please tell me what I am overlooking here.
Thanks,
Rich

I am looking to run a very similar application with the same card, a similar computer, and do PID control. I'm amazed you were able to get a loop rate of 100 kHz even if it wasn't doing anything real! NI quotes 1 kHz max loop rates in most of its documentation, though I suspect most of it is quite old. I'm interested in what rate you were finally able to achieve with the PID control. I would also be interested in seeing the PID/DAQ communication part of your could if you are able/willing to share it. I was hoping to get 4-5 kHz with at least one channel and hopefully more.
Thanks,
Aaron

  • How can I keep every single photo from saving to "collections""my photo stream""camera role" and just use one folder? And why do I have to delete the same pictures 4 times? In "collections""myphotostream"camera role""deleted photos" I need ONE FOLDER

im sick of deleting the same picture 4 separate times, I want to limit everything to one folder and only have to delete one time, how? Why does this have to be so complicated

Photos you take on your camera are in the Camera Roll and are like the film in a camera.
Photo Stream is an independent stream of photos from all devices that are logged onto the same iCloud account and that have Photo Stream turned on. Photo Stream photos are kept in the cloud for 30 days or up to 1000 photos, whichever comes first, so unless you have a particular photo you just don't want to stay out there for 30 days, you don't really need to delete Photo Stream Photos. They are temporary. Your device will continue to keep your Photo Stream photos from prior to the 30 day limit, but if you switch Photo Stream off in iCloud and then right back on, the only photos that will re-display in Photo Stream on that device are the ones that remain within the 30 Day/1000 photo parameter.
Collections is simply a single place which shows all of the photos that you have on your device. You do not need to delete photos from Collections. It is just a single place where you can see the contents of all of your albums.
Photos in albums that you have created on the device itself are tied to the photos in your Camera Roll, so if you delete them from the Camera Roll, it will tell you that it will also be deleted from an album.
Albums that you have sync'd from your computer should be removed the same way you got them there - by hooking the device up to a the computer you did the sync with, and un-selecting the album from the Photo profile screen.
So, really, there are only two places that you need to delete photos - Camera Roll and Photo Stream.

  • Why do I have to conform?

I hope someone here can shed some light on my problem. I'm putting together an assemble edit for CG short that I'm help out on. We're in the process of locking each shot down to the exact frame count - which is where my problem comes in.
The animatics that i'm being given are at 60fps encoded in Cinepak. The final delivery of the project is going to be 720p at 30fps. Whilst we edit the shots I've been putting the 60fps animatics straight into a 30fps sequence and all was going swimmingly until we came to lock down the frame count for each shot.
When I import these animatics in my Bin in Final Cut Pro (I'm using 4.5), FCP seems to think these animatics are at 59.94fps. This is obviously an issue when doing a frame count.
I have one clip that is eactly 66 frames long (I've counted them in QuickTime just to check) but when I bring them on to a sequence at 60fps in FCP, I seem to loose 2 frames as it's only 64 frames long. I tried converting the movie to 30fps and putting it into a 30fps sequence, but when I import that movie FCP seems to think it's at 30.97fps and instead of it being 33 frames long it's 31 frames long.
The only way I can get FCP to recognise the animatic at a correct frame rate is to convert it to 30fps and then use Cinema Tools to conform the frame to 30fps. Then when I import it into my FCP project, it's correctly detected as 30fps and the frames are there.
If I overlay a conformed and unconformed version of this movie in FCP the action doesn't seem to move, I just loose the frames from the end of the shot.
So the questions I have are this...
Why do I have to conform a clip to 30fps when it already is at 30fps for FCP to correctly recognise it's frame rate when QuickTime and Compressor seem to recognise the unconformed version as 30fps just fine?
If I wanted to do a 60fps version how to I conform the framerate when Cinema Tools only can conform upto 30fps?
And finally, why can't FCP just recognise the framerate of a QuickTime movie?
I'm doing this all on a PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7Ghz with 2GB or RAM running Mac OS X 10.4.6.
    thanks in advance
    Andrew

    Hey David,
Thanks for your response, I know the workflow is a little unusual but so is the project.
The reason the animatics are at 60fps is that they are motion captured and that was done at 60fps as they will be later used in a video game. The CG short is essentially a movie using the game assets and as it's 720p, it's 30fps.
I would have probably gone for image sequences too, but I was working with different shots coming from multiple artists and they are using Maya on Windows which doesn't give you much choice output for the PlayBlasts (Animatics), it seem to like AVIs the best.
Being that there was multiple revisions of each shot a day, to keep the files manageable we choose to do the PlayBlasts as Cinepak AVIs.
The edit I was putting together was only ever going to be an assemble edit, so the final frame count for each shot could be determined and then the Maya scenes would be sent to a post house for rendering. The final short would be all the shots in order back to back.
Hopefully that explains the strange workflow, if you have any tips on improving it if I have to do it again - please let me know.
I guess the framerate quirks will really be one of those mysteries!

  • Why do I have to guess how much data I might use in a month when I select a plan?

When I sign up for water service, I don't guess that I might use 1,000 gallons a month, and then pay three times the going rate for water if I take a few extra showers. I get charged for how much water I use that month.
When I sign up for electricity service, I don't guess that I might use some set number of kilowatt hours, and then pay three times the going rate if we have a heat wave and I run my air conditioner for a few extra hours.
Why do I have to guess how much data I might use, and then spend three times the going rate if I stay up watching youtube videos for a few extra nights?
It is stressful to have to constantly monitor usage, and figure out ratios of how much I've used compared to how much time is left in the billing cycle to see if I need to curb my usage. It is not a good customer experience. I would prefer that data be charged a flat rate based on actual usage, perhaps with an option to throttle speeds at certain levels to prevent cases where a minor lapse in judgment could ruin my monthly budget, like forgetting to check data usage religiously on a device meant to simplify my life.
    Thank you for your consideration.

Simple answer is Verizon is offering a block of data for usage.
Where I live the water bill states my wife and I are being charged for 30,000 gallons per quarter/half and the price is say $60 however we never use any where near that amount. I send the meter reading in and it shows the amount we use. But the hamlet we are in has a set amount of gallons. Not fair but we live with it.
For your data outside of the unlimited which is not available any more to new customers you may be a light user and never go over the 2GB for $30 dollars a month. If you do you will pay through the nose for data. If you pay for more data say 4GB and I don't have the price for it so lets say its $70 then you don't have to watch as much for overage fees. But you are paying for the data in advance so as not go over and get hit with whopping fees.
It is just the way it is.

  • Why do I have to buy Transformers II ?

    ... and other movies
I've never liked that online video rentals are 24 hours when the old brick-n-mortar gave me a week or two. I would rent more if I was given even a few days — like through the weekend, 'ya know?
The price of renting online bugs too. Why should it be more than it was at a brick-n-mortar?
But OK. I adapted. Grouchy but adapted.
Now here's all the videos I want to rent that can only be purchased. ... Why can't I filter on that? Why do I have to wait until I (using that lovely keyboard that comes with AppleTV, ugh) left, left, down. left, ok, up, up, right, right, right. ... etc. ... then finally get to the video description to find it's not even for rent!? Why? I thought things were supposed to be simple.
And finally. Why do I have to purchase the videos anyway? What happened to renting?
(I'm now watching an old free movie on another streaming service instead of making a purchase or rent from Apple. Happens more and more frequently. Sorry folks.)

    Thanks vazandrew,
Beyond their control? It's an agreement. It's a choice. Least they could do is let us filter searches so we don't get led into impulse-buy situations. But maybe our impulses are more to their advantange than our satisfaction. (cough cough) Nearly every movie my kids want to watch ends up in this same bucket. Transformers II actually is much less $$ than most. But I don't want to own it.
Thanks for the pointer to the remote app though! :-)
I've always liked the AppleTV screensaver showing all my photos. There was a time I'd pay $100 for a photo-frame, so it's still a good thing. ... Just never expected a screensaver to be a killer app.
More seriously, I really think Apple, and the studios, would make more money from me if they let me rent digitally at a reasonable rate and for a few days at a stretch. Apple movies were getting more $$ from me before the purchase-only ones started showing up. I don't plan to adapt to purchasing like I did to 24 hour rentals.
Of course. I'm not just complaining about Apple here. In fact, I've been a fan of Apple for decades.

  • Verizon's failure, why do I have to pay?

As a long-time - and still current - customer of Verizon, I'm shocked at how poorly I am being treated. I cancelled my phone in December because my company gave me a phone (also Verizon). At that time I gave Verizon my new mailing address, email, and phone number- which they did not update in their system. So they continued to mail my final bill to my old address, which never made it to me, until now.
They did not email, they did not call; they instead sent the bill to collections. I called Verizon and paid the outstanding bill, come to find out after the fact that I am also required to pay the fee for collections. They, however, did not tell me this at the time I made my payment (another mistake by Verizon), I was informed by the collection agency that I am required to pay them or my credit report will be negatively affected. Verizon dropped the ball. They did not send the bill to the right address, they did not call, they did not email. The sent it to collections.
Of course no one at Verizon will work with me, a good customer. I'm waiting for someone's supervisor to call, yet I have little faith that they will give a crap about little ol' me. I just want Verizon to take some accountability for their shortcomings in this situation. Why do I have to pay for their mistake? What more should I have done? This is unfair.

I verified my information over the phone with a customer service representative when I called to cancel my account. I'm not sure how I could have verified that they properly put this into the system, other than getting verbal confirmation - which I did. They got the new email address correct, I know this because when I called this week to settle my bill, I received a confirmation to the correct email address. However, the mailing address apparently was not updated properly - as per my request - in the system. If you go into MyVerizon under Account Profile, your billing address is listed along with the option to change it. By making changes to your account, you have real time confirmation of the changes. - So you're saying not to trust the customer service representatives? I'm required to make sure they do simple tasks properly? Besides, I was canceling my account - why would I then go online to change my account that I just cancelled - especially since I just verbally gave my new information? Again, the root of this issue that you are not responding to goes back to the fact that the customer service representative did not do as I requested and update my address - which is why I never received notification. Had this been done properly, none of this would have happened.
I just received a pile of mail from the post office of mail that did not get transferred to my new address - of which included the bill from Verizon and the notification from collections. I had assumed that the lack of correspondence - via mail, email and phone - from Verizon meant that my account was settled. Personally, I don't make it a habit of calling businesses and asking them if I owe them money. I expect them to contact me. Unless you sign up for email notifications from Verizon for you bill, they will not send it via that method. It appears that they DID try to contact you when they sent the bill to your old address. It also appears that you failed to use a FREE service from the US Postal Service which forwards your mail to a new address for up to a year. I have done this in the past, it works and only delays mail for a few days. Plenty of time to get your final bill in time for payment without being overdue. I can understand not contacting businesses to see if you owe them money, but you cancelled service. If I were to cancel service, I would assume that I either owed money or due a refund and would make sure which it was. - I was set up to receive email notifications from Verizon - a service I used for that account for years.  I did have my mail forwarded through the post office, but some was still delivered to the old address anyway and it just made it's way to me now. Verizon's lack of contact with me lead me to believe that either 1)the account was settled, or 2)any remaining balance was transferred to my new account - which I do not see the bill for as my company pays for it.
Why would Verizon not try to contact me via email or phone? Sending an overdue bill to collections is a big deal - it affects my credit report. Does Verizon care so little about it's customers that they wouldn't even try to contact by email before making such a drastic move?Even if simply to verify the mailing address? This seems to be as much your failing(if not more) as it is Verizon's failing. As you say, it is YOUR credit report, not Verizon's. You have more of a stake in this than they do, why wouldn't you follow up in this matter? Even if simply to verify the mailing address? - Again, going back to the root of this issue - CUSTOMER SERVICE. I should be able to expect that if I tell someone my new address, it will be reflected in the system. I should be able to assume that I would be notified by email for a matter like this, especially since they have my email and have permission to use it and had been using it for years to notify me of bills, why stop now? Why is the buck passed to me to pay this new fee for a mistake that originated with Verizon? Why can't Verizon admit any wrong doing at the root of this issue - where they dropped the ball?

  • Why does it have to be tethered???

Hi, So I'm just about ready to buy the ipad. But I am having a big problem understanding WHY this thing cannot be used in my household, because my 2 apples run Tiger. If its a matter of an occasional update, I could take it to work to do that. I phoned the apple store, the rep said It can't work or sync without Leopard within my home wireless network. I also have within my wireless network 2.5 terabit of hard-drive and the rep was unsure if the ipad could see that either...
Both of my computers are pre Intel processor, so I read that leopard & snow leopard are out of the question on my computers.
If this is suppose the be the next big thing, Why does it have to be tethered to ANY computer. This IS sold as a wireless device, NOT an extension to another computer. Am I getting bad info or what.
    Please advise.

    Hi,
All is not lost, I think. It's true that you'll need either Leopard or a Windows machine with the latest iTunes in order to get the iPad going. But you're right, you can just do that at work. The iPad will work perfectly after that without ever synching it again. You can do everything from the iTunes store from the iPad itself.
However, if you want to synch your music not bought at iTunes, as well as iPhone apps and contacts then you're going to have to find a compatible computer to do it on. It needs the latest iTunes which doesn't run on Tiger. But once you've synched you don't really need to do it again unless you want to add a lot of music from another source than iTunes. Of course, synching also backs up the iPad, don't forget.
As far as the gigundo drive, if the iPad doesn't recognize it, all you have to do is copy what you want synched to a smaller drive (or even a DVD) and use that instead.
Hope that helps. The iPad is most definitely an independent device but it does need a compatible computer if you want to synch stuff to it from elsewhere.

  • Why does Java have such a large footprint?

I've been curious about this topic for a while, but I haven't ever looked into this to any depth. I also posted this to stackoverflow but haven't gotten any solid responses so far:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1107991/why-does-java-have-such-a-large-footprint
Java - or at least Sun's Hotspot JVM - has long had a reputation for having a very large memory footprint. What exactly is it about the JVM that gives it this reputation? I'd be interested in a detailed breakdown: how much memory goes to the runtime? (The JIT? The GC/memory management? The classloader?) Anything related to "auxiliary" APIs like JNI/JVMTI? The standard libraries? (Which parts get how much?) Any other major components?
I realize that this may not be straightforward to answer without a concrete application plus VM configuration, so just to narrow things down at least somewhat: I'm primarily interested in default/typical VM configurations, and in a baseline console "Hello world" app as well as any real-world desktop or server app. (I'm suspecting that a substantial part of the JVM's footprint is largely independent of the app itself, and it is in this part that I'd like to zoom in, ideally.)
I have a couple of other closely related questions:
Other similar technology, such as .NET/mono, don't exhibit nearly the same footprint. Why is this the case?
I've read somewhere on the intarwebs that a large portion of the footprint is due simply to the size of the standard libraries. If this is the case, then why is so much of the standard libraries being loaded up front?
Are there any efforts (JSRs, whatever) to tame the memory footprint? The closest thing I've come across is a project to reduce the on-disk footprint of the JVM [1] and to modularize the standard library [2].
I'm sure that the footprint has varied over the past decade or so with every new version of Java. Are there any specific numbers/charts chronicling precisely how the JVM's footprint has changed?

Presumably versus some other VM. I would suppose the fact that much of the VM is written in java has something to do with it.

Not sure I agree with that. What size do you see with a .Net app that uses 3.0/3.5?
I've read somewhere on the intarwebs that a large portion of the footprint is due simply to the size of the standard libraries. If this is the case, then why is so much of the standard libraries being loaded up front?
Good question. There is a feature that allows multiple VMs to use the same memory footprint version of the loaded libraries. That is a new feature and it isn't clear to me if it covers the entire API. I do not know if that is dynamically built.

  • Why do I get data rate too high error after capture and save? (using AJA Kona)

I record(capture) about an 70 min program with Adobe premiere CS5 once a week. About a year ago I got the error *data rate too high" when stopping "capture" when saving program to Video HD(2TB). The video recorded was OK but after about 15 min the audio was out of sync and garbled. I thought I had found the problem by defragging the video drive. I have not had any problems for about 50 weeks.. until this week-it happened again. I know the video drive(2TB) was defragged and only half full. I was able to recover the program since I back up the program on a DVD but had to go through a lot of problems massaging it since I send the program to a local ABC broadcast station in 16/9 SD and the DVD is rescored in 4/3 .
I have the CS5 program on a separate 2.5 GB drive. I am running Win7pro and have a RAID series of Intel Xeon ES410 processors.
Any help as to why I get this "Data Rate too High" when saving program would be appreciated.
    Thanks much!

I have three Mitsubishi broadcast quality cameras (two HD -waiting on money for switcher and 3rd HDcamera). They feed to their camera control untints and then to a switcher and then into video computer and the C5S. I probably am not answering your question. I can access the computers from my home(I also have a CG computer). Is there some way I can tell you from the C5S program which the info you need? I have it ready to record for next week.
I know how to manipulate various functions but I do not know all the ins and outs of the Premiere settings-an IT man set those up for me two years and he is no longer available.

  • Why does AVCHD have to be converted to AIC 1st?

    Couple of questions...
Why does AVCHD have to be converted to AIC 1st? Is it because the hardware isn't up to AVCHD or something? I only have a Core 2 Duo 2GHz 4Gb RAM so is this enough?
Won't converting from AVCHD to AIC and then to an output format (which would be best for quality once editing is complete?) decrease overall quality?
On a side note, currently my Panasonic TZ7 does AVCHD lite 720P. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Panasonic TZ20 with AVCHD full HD 1080i. However I've heard that although 1080i is full HD its not as good as 1080p progressive. Now I'm wondering if I should buy the Sony Hx9v which has 1080p or wait till next year for a newer TZ camera which has 1080p. Is there a massive difference between 1080i and 1080p, and for that matter over my current 720p?
Reason I'm thinking of upgrading is I'm off to Disney Florida this year for 1st time and want best I can, so was wondering if my current TZ7 would be enough or to upgrade to a TZ20 for the video
    Cheers

Why does AVCHD have to be converted to AIC 1st?
Basically AVCHD doesn't record all the frames of a video as full frames (i-frames), it records a full frame every so often and the frames in between are made of information about the areas of the frame that have changed and a calculation so that a full frame can be recreated by comparing it with the previous frame (p-frames), this gets a little more complicated as they can also be compared with next frame too (b-frames).
Since the in between frames aren't full frames they can't be edited, which is where AIC comes in. When the file is converted to AIC all the frames are recreated (as full frames) from the various types of frames in the AVCHD file, they can then be edited.
Won't converting from AVCHD to AIC and then to an output format (which would be best for quality once editing is complete?) decrease overall quality?
Yes and no, think of the conversion more of an expansion whereby all of the quality of the original file is maintained, hence no loss of quality. This isn't entirely true since AIC does contain compression, but the files are already large enough as AIC files to expand them to an uncompressed format would be rather ridiculous for amateur video, and the loss of quality is probably immeasurable in most cases.
Is there a massive difference between 1080i and 1080p, and for that matter over my current 720p?
That very much depends on what you are going to do with it, the difference between these resolutions can be noticeable if the videos are encoded at appropriate data rates, but if you are going to use a similar data rate to compress a 1080p file that you use for a 720p file then you won't achieve any additional quality, indeed you may actually lose some.

  • Why do I have extra songs in my iPhone playlist that are not on my iTunes library?

After doing the iOS7 update (and iOS7.0.2) I decided to add my music to my phone (I never had music on it before).
I discovered that there were 20 very random and obscure broadway songs that were on my iPhone in addition to the 60 songs I just synced. They had the iCloud icon by them, unlike the songs I had just added.
After doing research I found that the broadway songs were technically "purchased" on iTunes although they are not songs I would have ever purchased- in fact I have never once purchased anything on iTunes.  This isn't my worry though, I am assuming it must have been some random free download I did at some point?
I went to settings > music > and turned show all music off.  This did NOT work for all of them and only solved the problem 80%.  There are still 4 of the random song on my iPhone. They DO NOT show up in my iTunes library on my computer and don't even exist on my computer.
With the other songs I can left swip and delete but these 4 songs won't!  Why won't these four songs left swipe?
I am going crazy and have tried restarting my phone, restarting iTunes, re-syncing, turning off the iCloud.  NOTHING WORKS.
Please help.  I am a normally a very smart and tech-savvy person and I cannot for the life of me figure this out.  I don't want to wipe everything- which as a solution is a pretty weak solution.
Why won't certain songs left swipe to delete off my phone when I am in the music app?
Why do I have extra songs on my phone that don't appear on iTunes on my computer?
Where did these songs come from and how do I get rid of them?
    Much thanks!

I had the exact same issue!! Seriously p*ssed me off when I checked out my ITunes purchased items (via my computer) and noticed that most of the additional tracks listed on my IPhone playlist was listed there too. However, I never authorized any purchases!!  (I have actually written Apple Support asking for a full refund of all tracks listed on my purchased list)
Be careful when you swipe your finger to the left/right on those "additional" tracks on your IPhone playlist... I'm pretty sure that the cloud symbol is an option to download or automatically buy those tracks.
    Solution for the problem:
1 - go to your IPhone settings
    2 - choose "iTunes & App Store"
3 - go to "Show All" & "Music"
4 - turn off "Music" by moving the bar to the left (it should be a white color once you turn it off)
    Should solve your problem :~)
