Why do I have to have my iTunes account open on my laptop in order to watch a digital copy of a movie on my iPad?

I've downloaded a couple digital copies of movies to my iTunes account. However, the only way I'm able to watch them on my iPad is if I open iTunes on my laptop first. If I close iTunes on my laptop, the movies go away on my iPad. Any suggestions?

To purchase from iTunes you are required to fill in an address section under the billing info. You don't have to put in a credit card, just a name and address, so that iTunes can send you receipts later.
I had to do this when I first started buying things from iTunes, you just go to Account>Billing Address> Edit

Yes. I would clarify your statement about the "shared" iTunes Library though. If you want each iOS device to have its own music library, you should create separate user accounts for them. Read:

My understanding is that the home sharing is based off of being on the same Wifi. So if someone brings their laptop to your house and connects to your Wifi and they have home sharing on they can connect so you can see his/her iTunes library on your iTunes.

You can't currently transfer content from one account to another account. As long as the tracks are on the computer's iTunes that they use/sync to, and your account is authorised on that iTunes, then they should be able to continue to use them.

iTunes account is what you use to make iTunes purcahses.
iTunes library is what is on your computer.

No, it tells you it can only be sync'd with one iTunes library.
Simplest way is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder (thisis the iTunes library) from old computer to new computer.
