Why is my laptop getting so hot.

What would suddenly make my macbookpro run really hard and get really hot after 3 years of never doing it?

In the 3 years that you've owned your MBP, you've updated your applications and installed some programs that uses more cpu processes.
Sometimes, updating a program makes your cpu run hotter because the updated software will use more cpu process.
Also, check your activity monitor under All Processes and see whats using most of your CPU's power that makes your MBP run hot.
Also, as OGELTHORPE has mentioned, dust and other particles can get trapped inside your MBP.
There are screws at the back of your MBP and slowly take them out and blow out the dust off the case and try to slowly clean out the fans.  Use a Q-Tip to clean them out if you wish.
If you're not techincally inclined, take it to any computer shop just for cleaning out the inside of your computer.  Shouldn't cost more than $50.

    Hi,
you may want to consider gettinig the heatsink cleaned if the unit heats up now and was working fine before.

also, you may need to consider using product on flat and hard surface only and within recommended ambient temprature. its recommended to use the product within 5~35 C only. please have a check on it.
    hope it helps.

  • Windows 8.1 HP AMD laptop gets very hot and brightness wont change from max

Hi i recently bought a laptop off my friend because my computer was very hard to read and i needed something smaller, it is only a year old and has a AMD A10 processor. Yesterday we recently tried to factory reset it and reinstall back to windows 8.1 to wipe data, we had a bit of a problem and it took a few hours due to the blue screen problem but i finally got it to boot, after installing windows i have noticed there was barely any programs on the computer except for internet explorer, i also noticed the brightness was on maximum and would not change from there i press the buttons adn the slider will go down but it wont actually change, this makes it very uncomfortable for eyes to read at night or in a dark room. i am also noticing that on the left hand side near the fan the laptop gets very very hot much hotter than my old intel i5 hp laptop, could you please help with these issues ASAP as it is driving me crazy and he wont even take the laptop back until i can fix the overheating and brightness issues. thanks very much

  • Why does my Mac get so hot after I installed Sims 3 on it?

Ever since I installed the Sims 3 on my mac book pro it has been getting really hot. Is the Sims to hard for it? What can I do to cool it down? Thanks. I resently updated it to OS X version 10.9 if that info will help.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Games make your computer work harder, generating more heat. You shouldn't be worried about this, because fans will turn on automatically when your Mac is hot. If you want to check the temperature of your computer, get Temperature Monitor

  • Laptop Gets Too Hot To Touch....

My four year old Power Book G-4 gets so hot on the bottom at the cover to the RAM compartment, that I can't keep my hand on the cover. This has gotten worse over the years, and I'm wondering if the cooling fan (is there one?) has gone bad, or is there another reason?
    Any ideas.....?

    Hi cartercal,
Boot up from your install DVD and select hardware test, it will rev up the fans, you should be able to hear them spinning as it goes through the test. This will also tell you if something is wrong.
If I remember correctly, hold down the option key as you boot with the DVD in the drive to use hardware test.
    Good luck!

  • Why my macbook pro getting so hot while using two or more simple application???

    Hi all,
for last 4 month i have been used macbook pro. at the begin i didn't face any trouble. recently i found that when i ran two or more application at a time my notebook began start hot. it's very scaring for me. what shall i do now.
one more thing, i need to use virtual machine here. is it create any problem for macbook pro ???

Notebook computer are designed to handle higher temps, so it's important to know the actual temps. I use the free utility Temperature Monitor:
    http://bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
because it does not invoke DashBoard, where all the widgets running can give a higher than realistic reading.
MBPs have thermal protection; if the temps approach those which could damage the computer, it shuts off. The safety shutdown point is, depending on the MBP variant, close to 100C/212F, a level that feels realy hot to the touch.
    Other things to consider:
Make sure that air can get around and under the computer. Setting the computer on your lap or a blanket can block part of the heat dissipation system.
Commercial anti-virus/internet security programs can run up the temps
Third-party backup software can also run up temps. On one of my computers, using Western Digital's backup software jumped the processor temp by over 10 percent.
Shut off DashBoard when not using it with this widget:  http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/dashquit_berenguierduncan.html
Can you elaborate of what you consider "simple Apps." A web browser is no longer simple if you are visiting sites that have a lot of Flash animation and/or video content. My MBP will jump 15-20F when viewing such sites with any browser.

  • Laptop gets extremely hot sometimes while in sleep mode.

The last couple days, when leaving work, I shut the cover to my macbook, and wait for the LED to start flashing indicating "sleep mode". So i load it in my bag, drive home, do my after work things. Come about 2-3 hours later, go to my bag and notice the bag is very warm. Upon getting the macbook out of the bag, the macbook is easily 4-5x hotter than normal, almost to the point of causing a burn. What's even more strange, when i open cover, nothing happens. So I turn the power on and its a fresh boot, even though the LED was still blinking on the outside.
Any idea as to whats going on with this? It doesnt do it all the time, but now being the 3rd time, I'm worried about potential fire, or frying the hardware.

It might not be happening on your MacBook, but it certainly is happening.
My MacBook is suffering from this problem, and there's an extremely long thread in the MacBook Pro forum about this.
I'm not sure, but I suspect there's some kind of software or firmware issue related to sleep. Several times I have been 100% certain my MacBook was asleep prior to placing it in my bag, and it ends up waking up and almost frying itself, and draining out the battery in transit.
A long call with Apple Support left me with an uncertain feeling. They walked me through a variety of resets, and then left me with the statement that they do not recommend that sleep be used when transporting a MacBook. They said that this is ALWAYS potentially unsafe and that the laptop should be shutdown before being placed in a confined bag. I commented that the problem is only happening sporadically, and that I have never before heard of this requirement for any manufacturer's notebooks.
This is my first Apple product, and I wasn't that impressed with the response I've received so far. I will continue to see how this works out.

  • My MacBook Pro (Early 2011) keeps freezing, the fan becomes extremely loud and the laptop gets very hot, what can I do?

    Hi there,
I would be grateful if any one could help me. I purchased my MacBook Pro  13 Inch in August 2011, it was the "Early 2011" version, which was shipped with Lion (I have now upgraded it to Mountain Lion last year).
Up until a few weeks ago, it was running fine. But recently my MacBook keeps freezing (A circular rainbow appears on the cursor), slowing down, the fan gets very loud and I often have to restart the whole machine. This usually happens when I'm running programs such as Safari, Preview or Microsoft Word
I only use my MacBook for university work so I only have Microsoft Office and iWork installed, nothing else. I've only used 19gb out of the 320gb available. I've also reseted my MacBook to its factory settings but that hasn't fixed the problem.
I've checked my AppleCare status and it says:
    Repairs and Service Coverage: Active
Your product is covered for eligible hardware repairs and service under a custom agreement.
For more information about your coverage, please contact us.
Estimated Expiration Date: 24 August 2014
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to how I can resolve these problems, as it is stopping me from doing my work?
    Many thanks.

Call Apple and make a appointment, backup your use data off the machine to a external drive.
Don't bother with TimeMachine if it asks, too long and likley be corrupted and unable to restore, just drag and drop your Users folder to the external drive.

  • Installed a new hard drive in my Macbook Pro Mid 2009. Now why is my CPU getting so hot?

So I've wanted more space on my computer for sometime now and I figured a 1TB drive would be a nice upgrade from the 320GB that came with my computer. Now the trouble is my CPU is running at high rate, 70 to 90%. Everything is over heating, even when no programs are running. It got to the point where I had to put the old drive back in. The hard drive that my computer came with is a Toshiba MK3265GSXF 320GB SATA/300 5400RPM 8MB 2.5" Hard Drive. The one I want to put into my computer is; Western Digital Blue 1 TB Mobile Hard Drive: 2.5 Inch, 5400 RPM, SATA II, 8 MB Cache - WD10JPVT. So as far as I can tell the only really big difference between the two is the storage.
Does anybody have any idea why it would over heat like this? Please help!

It means there is no bootable system on the drive. If you still have access to the old drive, then I suggest you boot from it then clone it to the new internal drive. Use OPTION boot to boot from the Recovery HD on the old drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external old drive. Destination means the new internal drive.

  • The bottom of my laptop gets too hot. the case come off

i have to take to apple store if my my edge of the cover is coming off? because of heat in hot weather. i did not realize? one of my screw came off. i can't find it. it become loose!!!

i will explain better. my case bottom become loosely because one of the screws became loosely. so i usually make it tighter all the time with my screwdriver. it happened since last year. now it become more loosely, and i didn't realize the screw came off and i couldn't find it because it was so tight. then the cover on the edge on the bottom on left become loosely a little. only the cover, not the case (aluminum). i don't know how it happened.

  • Why is my iMac getting so hot?

It seems like my iMac is getting hotter than usual. It is heating up at the top on the back, and heats up when ever it is not in sleep mode. I am worried that is might be bad for the computer, so for now I have placed a fan behind it whenever I am using it. But, in the long run, is there something that needs to be repaired? If so, what?

If you aren't seeing the machine shutting down on its own without Energy Saver prompting it to do so, then there is little to worry about.  If you see smoke, unplug immediately.
No software reliably measures the heat of internal components of the computer.  Apple's http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html lists the external environmental conditions expected for your machine:
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
    Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet
(Airplane cabin pressure is typically 9000 feet).
Installing third party RAM that is not to spec for the machine and vintage machine overheat the machine.
Installing anything the manual for the machine does not list as user installable you have to be very careful not
to miss factory instructions for applying cooling gel/pads for some machines in the proper dosage.   http://www.ifixit.com/ may have instructions for your machine.  If you had an authorized service technician install anything not factory installed, ask them to run a hardware test to ensure there isn't anything possibly wrong outside of the RAM.  Otherwise follow these directions if you suspect something is wrong.  Note, bad RAM may not show up in any test, but if it does, it is believable.

  • HT1529 why is mac mac book pro getting so hot?

why is my mac getting so hot?

The temperature usually is directly related to the load being placed on the system...what software are you running, multiple software?  Things like heavy duty games place a load by fully taxing he cpu and loading up the gpu to produce the display imaging.  Software that does very heavy graphics, things like ray tracing and rendering, put a full load on the cpu.
The cpu can run very hot, on the order of 100-110 deg, before thermal overload protection kicks in and runs bak the clock speed.  The system will start running up the fan speed to remove the excess heat.
So, how hot is the MBPr?  Warm to touch, hot to touch, uncomfortably hot to touch?
