Why is XCode so unstable?

After hearing about XCode's long and illustrious history, I would have expected a very stable product, yet mine is crashing all the time. Always something to do with the editor. Code formatting, undo manager, and simple typing all seem to regularly cause XCode to display error dialogs and then fail to work properly until a restart.
Am I the only person having problems with this?
XCode version: 3.2.1

Resurfacing this again.
I've now cleared xcode completely off my system, cleared all xcode settings from both the system Library and personal Library directories, and then installed the latest 3.2.1 release.
The problems still persist.
Problem one: Garbled editors. Will be editing for a while just fine, then for reason as yet unknown, editor display will suddenly (and I mean as a result of a single keystroke or something) garble all the text from the cursor position to the end of the display. Colour coding is also corrupted. The editor is still maintaining the text correctly behinds the scenes and any further typing is stored in the correct place in the buffer. Only known fix is to refresh the editor window by switching to and from the header file. Xcode will then resume with no problems for a while before something again causes a display corruption.
Problem two: Xcode hides all text. Probably part of problem #1. Similar situation except that in this case, 95% of the text disappears leaving a blank editor with the odd letter scattered around it. Again the editing buffer is unaffected and switching to and from the header fixes it.
Problem 3: Array index out of bounds. Just had this one, it appears to be new. Suddenly started getting popup error dialogs saying that something in xcode was trying to address an array index which was out of bounds. Can't remember exactly what it was, but appeared to be something to do with the storage behind the editor. Had to restart to fix this.

  • Why is Logic so Unstable?

    After working on a track for the best part of the morning, Logic decided to crash on me again...
    I had saved my work, but there are a few things I have lost.
    My question is this.. Why is logic so unstable? I have used logic since 1999 and never have I experienced it to be this bad.
    I get random crashes with Logic Pro but with no other Apple app.. Final Cut and others work like a dream on my machines.
    Logic can crash at any point it wants and I can never replicate the crash or figure out why.. I always keep my system tidy, repairing permissions on installs, Onyx, Disk warrior all the time. I have completely erased and installed my Mac HD writing Zeros to it and still get these problems.
    I have third party plugs like RMX, Ivory, IK Philharmonik, and others, but all with reputable companys who have all released regular updates that work with all versions of the present Tiger OS. I have also tried running Logic with no third Party plugs, and still get random crashes.. but who would want to as the factory sounds are not as good as my third part plugs.
    Many people say it is third party plugs that cause instabillity, which if it is the case, is even worse on Apple's part as no other DAW I use (with all same plugs) crashes like this....period.
    DP, Pro tools, they all work great.. Trouble is I know logic to well to switch to another DAW mid project.. Besides, why shouldnt we be able to use third party software with Logic if other apps handle them perfectly??
    Does anbody else have similar experiences or find that Logic Pro seems to be overlooked and way under-developed in terms of its basic stability?
    I know that WWDC is coming up, but to me, even if they do release something that will be the killer app, I feel that the way they have treated their Pro customers in not developing Logic Pro sooner and quicker is a swift reminder that Apple is far more concerned with other things and not its professional and loyal music making customers? (Garage band users not included!!haha)
    I had to vent this somewhere..hope you all understand where I am coming from!
    thanks..
    Two G5 Dual 2.5Ghz, 2.5GB Ram, Logic Pro 7.2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Just to stay with the subject for a second (myself included...)

    OK, I see you've given her the ol' "this is going to feel cold and intrusive". Do I take it to mean that you re-installed the OS from the factory disks as well?
    Also, might be time for a firmware refresh.
    Regarding doing Onyx/Disk Warrior "all the time"? I'd suggest that you don't make this a regular practice (I know some people will have my head for saying that). But the reason I say this is that I actually find that Logic feels particularly unwieldy after doing a full Onyx run-through. It takes a couple of Logic crashes before it all sorts itself back out.

  • Why does Xcode crash after it finds a device for development and I press "ignore"?

    When I try to program with java, inevitably, Xcode detects an iOS device and asks me if I want to use it for development, even with bluetooth disabled. When I press either button, it crashes. How do I stop this?

    It's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. Do this before the warranty expires.
    There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

  • Why is Clock Set unstable?

    In my practice i realized that setting clocks always change to "a dead old time of 1993 i think this was the factory default" whenever i restart the router, even though the new "clock set" is saved to "startup"
    Can anyone please help as to why this is happining and how to come about resolving it?
    The command used was "clock set hh:min:sec MONTH DATE YY"
    Thanks

    Olu, the seting time/date unfortunately is not saved in configuration , in most cases this is normally resolved by configuring network time protocol also known as NTP , in the event that you do not have an internal server that provides NTP information there are numerus public NTP server out in the internet where you can pooint your local NTP servers to sync up with public NTP servers, do a search on google for public NTP once you get some of this information then you don't have to use anymore clock set but point your device to NTP servers to pool time date information onto your router or switch.

  • HT5937 why does xcode give me an error than says "exited unexpectedly lost connection" when i put in a cin input in c++

    .

    First have you tried the program from the terminal? It works there correct?
    What kind of keyboard do you have, a wireless or a full keyboard with numeric keypad?  After doing a search I hove found that the problem seems to be with using the Enter key in Xcode rater then the Return key.
    The full keyboard with the numeric keypad has both an Enter and Return key. The Enter key is part of the Numeric keypad the Return key is part of the alpha kneeboard. Try using the Return key.
    On the wireless keyboard (which I have)  normal function of the key is Return but if you hold the function it sends Enter. If I run this code in Xcode and press the function to send a Enter I get the error.
    In the terminal either key works fine so it is some weirdness in Xcode. Just use the Return key and you should be ok.

  • Why my XCode always compiles so slowly?

    I am using a latest version of MacBook Pro with 2Ghz 4core + 4G memory. But the XCode is really unbareablely slow in building my project (with 10k+ files in 100+ projects). Sometimes, I can see it compiles very fast as the number of files get compiled in the status bar increases very fast. But sometimes, it keeps no change for more than 10 minutes like "Compiling 10 of 38 source files...".
    By running command "top", I find that process cclobjplus is working with low CPU usage, and number of FAULTS is increasing fast.
    And sometimes, XCode will quit abnormally during compiling and then all files need be recompiled again.
    Any tips on resolving my problem with XCode?
    I really feel angry with XCode!
    BTW:
    I am using XCode 3.2.6 on Mac OS 10.6.8.
    I am not the only one who is complaining about this, but I can't find a solution via google.

    Yes, you are.
    You could try updating to some recent version of Xcode that comes with a new, super-fast compiler called clang.

  • Why is Pages so unstable?  Too many photos

    I'm doing a 75 page book with up to 15 images on a page per client requirement. After about 7 pages the app crashes. Bought a new Mac Pro with 5.5 ram and ample hd space with fresh installs and still crashes. What is going on. Tried with more fresh installs on other new drives with the absolutely virgin Leopard that has been fully upgraded...more crashes.

    I have similar problems. Pages crashes frequently with a large project (90 pages with about 500 photos). This occurs on my PowerMac G5 (4.5GB ram) and also on a MacPro at the local Apple store. This is really disappointing -- I have many hours of work about to be lost. The crashes are random, with the crash report indicating a memory/kernel protection problem. This is clearly a serious bug, and Apple needs to fix it. Based on my experience, its not a user problem or corrupt file.
    BTW, you can look at the contents of your pages project with the Finder "Show Package Contents" option (control or right click on the pages document). In my case it contains image files (jpg) that originated in Aperture as previews, I believe. It also contains an XML file with the guts of the document and finally some other files. The point is that Pages (and Keynote too) have a fairly simply file structure under the hood.
    There was some mention about corrupt photos. I don't think this is the case. However, I often get messages from Pages complaining that an image I attempted to drop from Aperture to Pages is corrupt. It is clearly not corrupt -- this message must be due to some other error that caused a failure. I have seen this enough to know that I don't have corrupt images -- and doubt that other users have corrupt images.
    It is noteworthy that my 90 page document consumes 3GB real memory and even more virtual. This is absurd for a document whose file is only 100 MB. This points to some naive programming and quality testing. Apple needs to test this software on real documents, not just toy problems designed by programmers for programmers.

  • Why is XCode suddenly paid?

    I mean, I have no problem paying for it (I still won't update, though). But I think many people who would want to try it, will not because of the price tag.
    Think about it, there are no paid IDE's, they're all free.
    No, I think it will result in less people programming for OS-X, thus less programs and so less people buying OS-X. Bad call, Apple.
    If you want to make OS-X just as closed as iOS, please warn me beforehand, so I can sell my Mac before nobody will want them anymore.

    You are right, it is cheap, but it used to be free and that was an excellent plus point when it was introduced and Windows developers were forking out huge sums of money for MS development tools. I accept that other development tools have now come down in price and become more competitive but you have to ask yourself what the point is in charging such a small sum for such a brilliant product. In the UK its £2.99 which is certainly nowhere near the amount you would expect for such a vast and complex product. It does feel like a cheap money grabbing trick now they have the App Store, which is the perfect vehicle for making small sums transactions a lot easier (be honest, when its 0.59p and you click the button it doesn't feel like money!). Would they be charging this tiny amount if you had to go through a laborious process of entering payment details and going through card security??
    I don't think so. This is an easy way for Apple to increase their profit margins a bit because, lets face it, anyone who wants to develop for Mac will not mind shelling out such a small amount. On the one hand it irritates and takes some of the wind out of my sail when I am waxing lyrical to my friends about how much better Apple are in comparison to Microsoft; but lets get to the bottom line here, Apple are a business and need to make as much profit as they possibly can so its hardly surprising as this is a good business decision, albeit one that slightly damages their reputation as a forward thinking company that is able to spot the next trend (how many other company's now allow you download the SDK/Tools for free!). Being an optimist I would like to think that this money is being channelled back into making the awesome products and tools that we can all agree Apple churn out on a regular basis.
    Happy coding!
    Milly.

  • Why unstable when 200 FSB ?

    when I set FSB value to 200, My CPU performance is very unstable.
    The CPU score from sandra marks 5600~6500
    Due to this, the FPS (frame per sec) in the game also unstable.
    But when I seto FSB to 201, CPU performance is stable. CPU score from sandra is 10300~10400, and FPS in the game is very stable as well.
    I find out that some of FSB value has an effect on the performance of CPU. like 200, 203,.....
    I've no idea why 200FSB is unstable.  I know that in the Bios 2.0, when I set the FSB to 200, the real operation FSB is 203Mhz. so I set the FSB to 201.
    But in the Bios 2.2 this is fixed. 200 FSB in the BIOS is real 200Mhz. so I think I don't need to set the FSB 201 anymore.
    Why 200 FSB is unstable? 200 FSB is recommanded FSB of my CPU spec.

    It's most probably due to Spread Spectrum being enabled by default that'll prevent spikes by doing very minor % +/- in FSB... and when you set your own FSB, SS is being disabled so you'll get the standard settings being defined manually.
    Click on the Good Aritcles link under my Signature and read through the Spread Spectrum Guide . You'll most probably understand how SS works since the guide is so crisp and clear in the explanination done by one of our great member .

  • Cannot import java.util.concurrent.locks ... WHY?

    Why is Xcode unable to find the java.util.concurrent.locks package. The class browser knows it exists. For example the entry for the ReentrantLock class looks like this in the browser class window:
    ReentrantLock (java.util.concurrent.locks)
    Xcode knows about other java.util packages such as java.util.ResourceBundle which I have been accessed successfully in other parts of my projecgt.
    Here is a source file and the resulting compiler error:
    The source file:
    // Foo.java
    import java.util.ResourceBundle;
    import java.util.concurrent.locks;
    public class Foo { }
    The compiler error:
    compile:
    Compiling 2 source files to /Users/Terry/Desktop/JAVA/PROJECTS/Logic/bin
    /Users/Terry/Desktop/JAVA/PROJECTS/Logic/src/Foo.java:3: cannot find symbol
    symbol : class locks
    location: package java.util.concurrent
    import java.util.concurrent.locks;
    ^
    1 error
    BUILD FAILED
    Help or hints would be greatly appreciated!

    Well the reason to your problem is very simple... java.util.concurrent.locks is a package... Not a class.
    if you want to import a specific class, the class should be written at the end like you did for import java.util.ResourceBundle; but if you want to import a whole package you need to add the little star at the end :
    import java.util.concurrent.locks.*;
    Or else, you only import the class you need :
    import java.util.concurrent.locks.ReentrantLock;

  • Bridge is garbage-Why does it keep crashing?

    Hello, i know someone with a mac who has adobe creative suite cs3. They have bridge, which is always crashing and i'm supposed to fix it.
    Anyway, does anyone want to give me a clue as to why bridge seems so unstable? Has a recent update caused problems? Or does bridge just plain suck? Please, do not direct me to the usual article about setting preferences or clearing the cache. It doesn't work. I have tried that first.

    Look, here's what you get if you type "adobe bridge sucks" into google:
    Noscope | Journal | Does It Exist: Adobe Bridge Without The Suckage?
    Is CS2 (& Bridge) unstable or is it just me? - Photo.net Digital ...
    Adobe Bridge crashes all the time - PhotoCamel
    Great product idea, but why do they bother releasing products that don't work? Even with the recent update, Bridge is just a full blown POS (piece of sh...)
    End of day, Adobe Bridge sucks ***.
    Adobe Bridge sucks ***. Understatement. For some reason I tried to use it again earlier today.
    That's just the first page!!! So surely the consensus is that it sucks?

  • XCode 5 and InDesign CC 2014

    Something in the CC 2014 SDK looks strange to me. In the porting guide, The mentionned version of XCode is 5.0.2. This version of XCode supports Mac OS SDK 10.8 and higher. But in InDesign CC 2014 requirements, Mac OS 10.7 is supported. So why using XCode 5.0.2 which does not support this version of Mac OS?
    Furthermore, I have been able to compile a plugin with XCode 4.5.2, as needed for InDesign CC (9.x) version.
    Is this a mistake in the documentation, or did I miss something enormous?

    But if you have Xcode 4 installed you can setup path to SDK 10.7 in Xcode 5
    SDKROOT = {path_to_xcode4_SDKs}/MacOSX10.7.sdk
    MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET = 10.7
    MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET_i386 = 10.7
    MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET_x86_64  = 10.7
    MACOSX_SDKVERSION = 1070
    I'm not sure if you will need to change compiler. But you can check that comparing SDK CC and CC 2014

  • Xcode building to both architectures when I only want one?

    I have a fairly simple (one source file) command line application in C which was written for Linux but ought to run in OSX as long as I can provide its dependencies (some GNU libraries). I compiled/installed the GNU libraries it needed using Fink. Fink only builds Intel binaries, since I am using an Intel Mac. Because of this, I need Xcode to only try to compile my little application as an Intel (i386) binary, and not try to make a PPC binary or a Universal binary.
    I opened "Project" -> "Edit Project Settings..." -> clicked on the "Build" tab and went to the "Architectures" setting. I made sure it said only "i386" and did a Clean and then another Build. However I can clearly see in the build log that Xcode is invoking the compiler and linker twice each -- once for each CPU architecture. After compiling the PPC version of my code it will fail to link, because there are no PPC versions of its dependencies (the GNU libraries).
    Why is Xcode doing this, and is there a second setting that I haven't found, to make it ONLY build an Intel binary?

    I tried your experiment and saw a similar problem... I'm on a PPC Mac though. Initially the standard tool was building a Universal Binary even though the Project Info -> Build -> Architectures was just set to "ppc".
    So first I tried going to the "General" pane of the Project Info window and switching the pop-up at "Cross-Develop Using Target SDK:" from "Mac OS X 10.4 (Universal)" to "Current Mac OS"... That still tried to build a universal binary only this time I got several errors on the Intel link phase because the "Current OS" SDK contained no Intel libraries.
    However there appears to be a different Architectures setting on a per Target basis.
    In your "Groups & Files" pane expand the "Targets" group and select your target. Then click the "Info" button in the toolbar (or select "File -> Get Info") to get to the Target Info window. Select the "Build" pane... On my machine the "Architectures" setting here was set to both "ppc" and "i386". Turning off the "i386" here fixed my problem and allowed it to build only for ppc.
    I'm not sure how these Target settings roll up into what you see in the Project settings. But it does seem kind of odd.

  • How do i get delta updates for xcode

    Why are xcode updates so big are there no delta updates like osx

    The downloads used be much larger. People complained.
    Now, you can choose to download components and documents after the install, which will at least spread things out over time.
    Remember that Xcode is an IDE - one that is tightly controlled across many levels, requiring consolidation to work properly.
