Why is yellow light is flashing on my airport extreme

Why is the yellow light flashing on my airport extreme?  I can't get it to work.  I want to set up my printer to print wireless.

A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.

If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation.

You can find out by opening AirPort Utility on your Mac or PC and clicking Manual Setup
Click directly on the word "Status" *(2nd line on the summary page) and another window will open to explain why the light is flashing....and offer some suggestions to remedy things
If everything else seems to be operating correctly on your network, it might be a message that an upate is available for the AirPort Express

  • USB flash drive and Airport Extreme

I got an Airport Extreme, and one of the reasons why is so that I can have a drive attached to the router so that I don't have to leave on a computer for file sharing or go in and boot up the computer when I needed some files. I am using a 16GB USB flash drive at the moment formatted with FAT32 (no mac in the house). I tried to backup some stuff on it, a bunch of smaller files in a folder totalling about 4.3 GB. The base station keeps rebooting itself in the middle of the transfer.
I saw some threads on here that are hinting that Airport Extreme doesn't work well with any type of external storage, whether an actual HDD or a flash drive. Those were somewhat dated. Is there a way to fix this? I'm using the latest firmware.

OK, I feel silly on this one.
After looking for issues with the airport and not finding any and needing a file from my backup drive, I had to connect it up to my PC. That's when I found my solution.
The Drive I had connected had stopped responding. That's why the Airport was not showing it and not allowing connections. I had power cycled the drive a few times while testing, just not long enough. I unplugged the drive for 2 minutes, all cables, then reconnected. After about 5 minutes, the Airport was able to confirm the drive and turned the share back on.
    Hope that helps.

  • Rapid green flashing led on airport extreme

I have just plugged in my Airport Extreme after not using for a year and it has a rapid green flashing led status light, the Airport utility does not find it so I assume that there is a hardware problem? Does anyone know what a rapid (very) green flashing light means?

Unfortunately, a rapid green flashing light is usually a symptom of an internal power supply failure.  If you have an Apple Store in your area....suggest that you take it to them to let them have a look.
Otherwise, you can contact Apple Support directly at http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • WHY is my iMac so SLOW with my Airport Extreme?!?!?

I have an iMac G5 and an Airport  Extreme base station.  I just opened Safari on the iMac and in the time it took for it to open the Apple home page I was able to go to my backpack, dig out my HP Netbook, turn it on, log in to Windows, open Safari, and navigate all the way to this page and start typing... and my iMac is STILL trying to load the Apple home page... WHY, APPLE? WHY?? I love my iMac, why won't it work with my Airport Extreme? Everything else I have works fine, in the same locations, and the iMac worked fine when I had a Belkin router... ever since I got this Airport Extreme the iMac has turned into a big white web-surfing glacier.  ...Whats's the deal?

    Hi,
If you have three or four bars of signal in from the airport it is probably related to the internet cache and not your Airport. But, I also noticed you are using Leopard (the Vista of OSX). Install Onyx and run Automation. Make sure you selct the internet cache in the settings window.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard. It is 30 bucks well spent. Leopard is a monster! Also, as much as I am a macaholic, Google Chrome is a much better browser than Safari.

  • RANT: Why is there no power button on the Airport Extreme Base Station?

I know there is no solution to this until Apple updates the next generation of Airport Extrem Base Stations; hopefully they'll add a POWER BUTTON to it.
I like to turn off my base station when I'm not at home and the only choice I have is to pull the plug out of the back. Why? Two reasons: cut down on my energy bill and SECURITY.
Not that it really uses much energy, but I'm doing the environmental thing here. And my network is password protected, but I just feel more comfortable having it turned off when I'm not there.
So, does anybody feel the same as me about this?
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   My first Mac was a IIcx. Those were the days!

    Really an airport
being tunred off for the time you dont use it isnt
going to save the environment that much I am sure
there are plenty of environmental accidents that ruin
your hundreds of hours of energy use over the years
    in mere seconds.
I'm not just thinking of myself when I speak of the environment and energy use. If everyone that has an Airport Network at home turned it off when they were not at home, I think it would make a significant difference. People need to think nore of their impact on the world instead of viewing just their one little piece of it.
It's like the people who leave their desktop computers and monitors on all the time. Turn the friggin' things off if you're not there and if it's not performing any function. Those devices are just eating up energy.

  • After connecting Ooma phone service, my airport still works fine but yellow light constantly flashes. Should I be concerned?

After connecting Ooma phone service, my airport works fine, but it constantly blinks yellow. Should I be concerned?

You will get error messages in the airport utility..
Please go to the utility and click on the red circle on the airport. It should have a number in it.. which will be the number of issues you have.. eg double NAT.
If you previously had the Airport setup as main NAT in the network.. the ooma device just took over.. so you need to redo the setup of the airport to have a subsidiary role.
If you don't understand  the issues list them for us.. but certainly adding the ooma is not going to go without effect.

  • Why can't wireless devices connect to my airport extreme? i have 2 macbooks and an iTouch. only 1 macbook will connect. help!

i've had my airport extreme for over a year now. and it works perfectly with my original macbook. however, when other people visit, they can see my network but they can't connect. i also recently purchased a new macbook. and again, my new macbook will see my network but it won't connect. my iTouch has the same problem. help, please!

When only a single device can connect, that typically indicates that there may something not configured properly with the DHCP server service in the AirPort. Is your AirPort Extreme connected directly to a simple broadband modem or to another router upstream of it?
If it is a modem, please try a complete power recycle of all of your networking equipment.

  • TS1589 My amber light keeps blinking on my airport extreme

The utility tells me there is no internet connection but I know there is because my old router connects. What do I do next?

Sorry for your frustration but I bet we can get this to work.
    1.  You can't connect your computer to the Extreme using the USB port.  That is only intended for use with a printer, external hard drives, or powered USB hubs.   So just go ahead and unplug that for now.
    2.  We should be able to connect to the Extreme using WiFi.  On your Mac laptop choose the Extreme as your WiFi access point by clicking on your Wireless icon on the top right.  Once you are connected via wireless then run Airport Utility and you should then be able to setup the Extreme.  You could also connect to the Extreme temporarily by running a Ethernet cable to one of the Ethernet ports of the Extreme and then to your computer.
    3.  I'm going to cover the basics which usually fix this problem - just to make sure this is all done correctly.:
    1.  Make sure you have plugged the Ethernet cable from the Comcast modem to the WAN port of the Extreme.  The other 3 ports are switching ports and it won't work correctly if it is plugged into one of those ports.
    2.  After verifying the previous has been done correctly - power off both the modem and the Extreme,  Then, power on the modem and let it go through its startup till it is working correctly.  Then, power on the Extreme.  This may very well solve the blinking amber issue because what I have found is that cable modems are assigned their IP addresses by what equipment is connected to them - if your old Linksys router works fines when connected but the Extreme doesn't and the modem hasn't been reset then that should fix it.
Let me know what happens and if that doesn't work we can try something else.  If it doesn't work please post what error message Airport Utility is telling you - that will help as well.

  • Why cant my imac G5 connect to my Airport Extreme?

I have an "old" iMac G5 and an Airport Extreme base station from around about the same era (2005?) Anyway, Before I got the AX I had a Belkin router that supplied more then enough WiFi for my iMac, my Apple TV, iPhone and netbook all at the same time and I never had any connection issues, no skipping when streaming music or video, it all worked perfectly.  I Decided to go Apple all the way and "upgraded" to the Airport Extreme, but ever since then I haven't been able to maintain a good connection with the iMac... it slows way down, even loses connection altogether and then when I try to reconnect it struggles to even find the Airport signal, then when I tell it to connect I immediately get a "network timeout" error over and over again, and I can't connect.
I have inspected (and even replaced) the Airport card in the iMac, and it didn't help.  I've gone over my Airport Extreme settings and can't see the problem... Apple TV, iPhone, everything seems to be working just like before, except for the iMac...
    Any ideas??

The iMac G5 supports 802.11 g wifi, so it should work just fine with an airport extreme configured to support that mode. Have you moved any of the equipment around such that there is a larger distance between the iMac and the Extreme?  Is it possible to connect the iMac to the extreme via an ethernet cable?

  • Why?  xbox live doesn't connect to Airport Extreme wireless network

Xbox live wireless adapter is not connecting to my wireless network. xBox live support said to change to WEP security (does not support WPA security). Tried this but it doesn't work either. I can't find any information on Apple support or xBox live support that confirms whether or not the router is even compatible with xbox live. Does anyone know or have experience with this?

Go to your computer and run the Airport Utility. Click on the Manual Setup button. In the tabs you'll see Summary, Base Station, Wireless, etc. Select Wireless. Look about 1/2 way down and you'll see Wireless Security. Click on the popup button and select None. At the bottom of the window click on Update. You'll go offline momentarily as the base station is updated. Now go back to your XBox and connect. Now download all the updates you can.
Once this is finished, go back to the base station and repeat the steps except set the security to WPA and see if your XBox will connect. If not, set the airport for WEP and see if that works.

  • Why won't HP B209a-m connect wth Airport Extreme?

I have home network wth macbook pro running snow leopard and mac mini running lion.  Internet is cable modem into the macbook.  I have an Hp Photosmart B209a-m that was running wirelessly with a netgear router.  I just discarded the netgear and installed an Airport Extreme.  The HP will not connect to the new router. I reset the printer to factory configuration, shut the whole system down and restarted.  All my other equipment works with no problem with apple extreme.  Suggestions?

How did you reset the printer to factory condition. On the printer itself?
When you plug into the extreme for the first time, you need to go to system pref, and re-add your printer into that list, becuase the location has changed.

  • WHY DOESN'T MY HARD DRIVE SHOW? - AIRPORT EXTREME N WITH XP SP2

I have configured my Airport Extreme Base Station and also have it working with Airport Express, so that the base station now appears in iTunes (that only took 2 hours!). In the Airport Admin Utility my external hard disk also shows as connected, but my computer isn't recognizing it. Can someone tell me what I need to do for the external drive to be recognized so I can have the main functionality this device claims - connecting an external hard drive to the network! Thank you.

Did you install the Bonjour for Windows included on AirPort Extreme CD?

  • Why won't my Macbook Air connect to Airport Extreme?

I just bought my Macbook Air, May 2014, and it's not connecting to my triangular-shaped Airport Extreme which I've had for years. Airport Utility on my computer finds it, it just won't allow me to connect. Went online looking to see if there's something I should download, but I'm stuck.

  • HT1178 why is my airport time machine yellow light flashing?

My airport time machine yellow light is flashing ,why?

Find out by opening the status on the airport utility summary page when you highlight the TC. There is no way of figuring it out except via the utility. What does it list is the problem.
