Why my Macbook Pro won't latch shut
I don't recall dropping my MBP, but suddenly the screen refused to stay latched at all and would easily fall open inside my bag (and wake up the mac) if nothing was pushing against it. I decided to find out why.
I found that the hooks in the top part of the case would come down normally, but even then they would not latch. I opened the case, and found that parts of the latching magnet that the hooks hook on to had broken off, on both sides too:
(image) http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6349/latchui4.jpg
The mechanism is part of the lower case. To find the model number of your case, look here on the bottom of it:
(image) http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/9913/modelnomu4.jpg
As you can see, in my case (MBP 15" Santa Rosa 2.4Ghz) it's A1226 and these can be found on eBay starting at US$50 or even less. Because the CD slot in my case is also bent such that a CD won't come out anymore I'm considering replacing it (and while I'm at it, i'll probably get a big harddrive and a $55 RAM upgrade to 4GB too. And maybe a new logic board as my graphics chip is unreliable.)
Just thought I'd share in case anyone is experiencing similar problems

Any idea why my macbook pro won't allow me to save anything?
I have plenty of free space- when I click 'Save As' in Illustrator the save window pops up but then disappears again in a second before I am able to save it. The same thing is also happening in Safari browser. Very odd as it has only just started doing it after having this mac for 3 years!
Start with these and see if it helps:
SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow directions for a battery you should not remove yourself
pram reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Try a safe boot, some times this can fix some glitches, power off, power back on holding the shift key till you see the progress indicator (note this will take longer than normal) login, logout. Boot normally.

MacBook Pro won't Sleep or Shut Down
My MacBook Pro won't go to sleep or shut down.
Sleep
The behaviour is the same whether I press the power button and choose 'Sleep' or whether I choose 'Sleep' from the Apple menu. The computer stays awake, but it loses the ability to respond to Keyboard Shortcuts, such as those used for Expose, and can get stuck in some Apps. If I close the lid the computer stays awake but the screen blacks out. Re-openning the lid does not re-illuminate the screen so I have to force shut down and re-boot.
*Shut Down*
The behaviour is erratic. Sometimes the computer simply ignores me (although it does close the 'Are you sure you want to Shut Down now?' window), and sometimes it goes to the blue screen with the progress circle and hangs.
*What I've tried already*
- Resetting the SMC
- Checked the Firmware versions are the latestSorry for the repost. New to this forum and I hadn't seen the answers to the last time I brought up this topic here:

Start up Disk full and MacBook Pro won't reboot. Only white screen but can sleep, restart, shut down.
Reboot into Safe Mode (hold the shift key down at the sound of the chime, release when the progress bar appears) Safe Mode will take longer to boot than normal.

My 17" Macbook Pro won't start at all. I shut it down last night at 80% and today I get only a black screen with no sound, no light, nothing. The power cord light does show orange when plugged in. I don't know exactly which OS it is. It's model # A1286. I've tried all the tips about holding down different keys to no avail. Anyother ideas? (The serial # is w8******agu if that helps.) Many thanks.
<Edited By Host>I had the exact same issue... Macbook Pro late 2008 with Core2Duo. Went to all the steps suggested in the knowledge base, tried to reset the SMC, but to no avail. Took it to the Macstore in Mexico, the wanted to replace logic board for $800.... Finally, I sent it to a logic board repair service, where they "fixed" the logic board for $200. It worked perfectly for 4 months, then happened again
Any ideas?? I would appreciate any help!!!!! -
why my macbook pro making lot of noise inside. Is it something to do my shutting down. I usually shut down my system in every week.
Can anybody provide any solution on this. What kind of noise and when? There are fans inside that run at various noise levels keeping things at the right temperature. There is a hard drive, unless you have SSD, that can make noise when the stepping motor moves the track arm. There is an optical drive that makes noise at startup.
There are noises when you move the MBP and the motion sensor engages. -

MacBook pro won't boot up Keeps turning off
MacBook pro won't boot up. When power button pressed the white screen w apple comes on w progress bar but shuts off before bar completed. If I move cursor or hit buttons it boots but will turn off if cursor stops Moving or stop pushing buttons. Just started happening. Ran hardware test and all shows ok. Any ideas??
Thanks for all the help; however, I still continue to have problems booting off of any other media.
I've tried the Apple CD w/ no success - I made an image of the apple cd and restored it to a USB drive, and it won't boot. I've tested both methods on another mac, and both options boot fine.
I'm going with my last restort here and am going to install OSX on a portable USB HD, and try to boot off of that (no clue if it will work given the outcomes of the other things I have tried). From there I'm going to backup the HD, and try DW as suggested.
Any thoughts as to why the mac refuses to boot off of any other media? It always boots halfway and then tells me I need to shutdown my mac.
Thanks again, -
Attn: macbook pro won't start up past grey screen NO MATTER WHAT
my macbook pro won't start up past the grey screen, NO MATTER WHAT I DO. i've searched all the discussions on this, and NOTHING WORKS. nothing caused this either - i was just browing the internet and using ichat, and my computer shut down, and that is when this started.
I am EXTREMELY disappointed with this bullstein. My computer works great, etc., and I support mac and apple to the nth degree, but then some stupid crap like this happens and I can't use my computer at all. I have to use my sister's **** ibook g3 to even do this.
PLEASE HELP. do NOT post what you have already posted in the other discussions, and i've already been welcomed to the boards. I can't go to an apple store because i'm on vacation in new mexico for the summer, and there no stores anywhere near here. is there any real advice around here? I need to use my computer. That is why I spent close to $4,000 for it with upgrades and software.where can i get an install disc for the macbook pro?
You really need to use the one that came with your MBP. If you don't have it, a retail Tiger OS X disc should work.
also, could an archive/install potentially free up some harddrive space on my computer?
No, it will actually use more space, so you will need at least 6G of free space. To clean your hard drive, use WhatSize.

My new Macbook Pro won't start.
Hello. So today i got my new MacBook Pro 13''. I started to use it and competely emptied battery. Now i can't turn it on, it don't charge and my MagSafe charge don't blink. What do i do? It's my first Mac and first problem in first day, it makes me mad.
I'm having a similar problem and I'm ready to explode. I have a huge work deadline tomorrow and can't get the work done. My 4 month old macbook pro won't charge anymore. I'm now on an old pc desperately searching for help.
I switched to my first mac because everyone said how great they were. Since when does a nearly new laptop stop charging? apparently this is a common problem and my sales person did not inform me when I asked specifically about potential bugs. I am furious, frustrated and very unhappy with this. Apple, you suck tonight.
Here's the problem: The light on the magsafe adapter did not work this evening when I tried to charge it. I did nothing out of the ordinary. It was on the desk and I plugged it in as usual. I spent an hour on the phone and online trying to get apple support to no avail. Apparently their 24/7 line is not 24/7 in Canada?
I cannot remove the battery as the site says, so I'm completely screwed at the mercy of this bullcrap brand. I did everything advised on the site, including checking the SMC and the cord itself. With only 20 minutes left and the battery ticking, I tried to email myself all the files I need, but they're huge and just when it was near finishing, the battery went from 10 to 21 minutes and it shut down.
Now it won't turn on, of course. The little button on the side has only one green light flashing. The adapter does nothing. NO red or green like before.
I am at my cottage and do not have an apple dealer nearby. Who can I scream at for this? All my previous computers could be easliy fixed when things go wrong. Remind me what is so great about this overpriced mean little machine!%^%!^*%&!(
WHY does a NEW laptop that costs a premium have such a fragile adapter / battery? Is there another adapter I can use to charge it? I'm at my wit's end. -
I was messing around with .kext files in the MacintoshHD and moved the system.kext and two others to my desktop and deleted the originals and now the MacBook Pro won't start up. All I get at start up is the apple icon then a bunch of text shows up part of which says Mac OS version: not yet set. then the apple icon turns into the power icon and tells me to turn off the computer. I've tried reinstalling from the install DVD by holding down option when powering on and selecting the install DVD and it just goes to a white screen with the apple icon and stays like that. I didn't have the disk utility on my Mac before this happened because I deleted it to make room on my computer a while ago so I'm not sure if that's why it won't load the install DVD but anyone who knows the solution to this with out going to get it repaired would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Never mind my dad just found the original install DVD and that worked. Before I was using an install disc that Apple sent me for another issue I was having, but thanks for replying so quickly and trying to help on this Thanksgiving day!!!

MacBook Pro won't reboot. Get spinning circle even after hard drive replaced at Apple Store
MacBook Pro won't reboot. Have to reinstall OSX each time I shut down in order to get it to start up. What could be wrong? I had the hard drive replaced already.
You shouldn't be using the disc at all. I thought I had made that clear. Boot from your recovery partition and run Disc Utility. If you get the same result -- the internal drive can't be repaired -- then you should consider replacing it. No storage device can be trusted, in my opinion, after throwing an error like that. But whether you choose to replace it or erase it, you have to get the data out first.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode

Then after a normal start I did the disk utility thing, I could only verify and not repair since it seems to be ok? :
Then I tried the SMC reset according to the link you sent me, not sure if I did it right cause step 4 and 5 under
Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own
were somehow the same, after I released everything I didnt have to press power button separately (step5), the mac started already (after step4)
@Lex: I'm really wondering about those two old applications
1) I didn't find anything useful about camerawindow or canon tools, except that it helps connecting my canon powershot G15 camera with a smartphone... don't even says if it works with my camera model nor if it works with mavericks...
2) ...Silverlight/OutOfBrowser/SLLauncher.app: Is it needed for what? After looking up it just said useful for webbrowsers, maybe better video quality etc. isn't that something good? if I delete it from my library will there e noteable differences when I use the internet?
besides that i deleted and update like u suggested and did a check again:

MacBook Pro won't recognize 1TB external drive
Hey team,
My mid-2010 MacBook Pro won't recognize my WD My Passport 1TB drive. I was copying files from the drive to my computer when my computer went to sleep (didn't run out of power, just went to standby mode). Turned computer back on and now it won't recognize the drive.
It is a USB 3.0 cord (computer is only USB 2.0 and the cord works with other drives) and when plugged in, the light turns on and the disk spins but isn't recognized my this or other computers (also not in Disk Utility).
Tried a handful of disk recovery programs but nothing wants to 'see' the disk plugged in.
Thanks for any and all suggestions.yes yes yes, I warn people about WD drives on this link:
Your dead external hard drive is likely fine! Great hope for your 'faulty' external HD

What now?
Only option is to buy the SAME exact HD and swap controller boards, or pay someone a LOT more $$$ to do the same thing.
its not soldered there, its just a controller/ SATA "one piece"
They do that to save 50 cents in mfg. costs.
I mention your "issue" in that link. Which is why you do NOT buy WD ext. HD.
they make the controller board and SATA card one piece.
CURRENT MFG. THAT HAVE controller board and SATA cards as one piece are : WD USB drives, and Toshiba USB Canvio
However Toshiba didnt USED to do that, but they started doing it at the end of 2013.
avoid those 2.
To avoid that nonsense, buy Hitachi drives in USB.
Or, the best option:
Save money and invest in a bare hard drive backup and redundancy plan
Its cheaper
less fuss
more reiable, removes the nasty failure point of SATA card interfaces.
takes up lot less space.
Bare hard drives and docks. The most reliable and cheapest method of hard drive data storage, archives, and redundancies
The best method for your data archives and redundancies, which is also the least expensive, the most reliable, and the most compact option is the purchase of naked hard drives and at least one USB 3.0 HD dock ($40 roughly).
While regarding Time Machine and your Macbook or desktop, your primary backup is best saved to a conventional USB (or Firewire / thunderbolt) hard drive inside an enclosure, the most important part of your data protection begins after your 1st / primary Time Machine / backup; and these are your secondary (most important) data storage devices, archives and their redundancies.
However bare hard drives and docks (below) also work perfectly as a Time Machine backup, this is for home use, since the docking station is certainly not very portable as a notebook Time Machine backup device should be; nor should bare HD be packed around with a notebook, rather remain at home or office.
Six terabytes of 2.5" HD pictured below in a very compact space.
Bare hard drives and docks have the lowest cost, the highest reliability, and take up the smallest storage space
Drawbacks:
1. Care and knowledge in general handling of naked hard drives (how not to shock a bare HD, and how to hold them properly). Not a genuine drawback.
Advantages:
1. By far the least expensive method of mass HD storage on a personal basis. Highest quality naked HD can be purchased in bulk very cheap.
2. Eliminates the horrible failure point of SATA bridges and interfaces between external drives and the computer.
3. Per square foot you can store more terabytes of data this way than any other.
4. Fast, easy, no fuss and most simplex method of data storage on hard drives.
