Why not build a standalone JVM?

Hi gurus,
I've seen all kinds of JVM for different platforms (not yet for my HP Jornada 540 though :-/). But I never saw a standalone JVM, which doesn't need any OS, or I should say, itself is the OS. I believe it is now possible to do so, as the JVM is hardware dependent and supports numerous applications already. This is specially good for a PDA, which we don't use for heavy computations, and pretty much all applications on a PDA are actually "applets".
Probably the most challengeous part for a JVM to be an OS is the implementation of peripheral devices, but again PDAs are very much fixed, and not much new hardware for it.
Any comments? ytsau

There is one available for the Intel StrongARM processor (iPAQ) called SavaJe XE. I havn't tested it but it would be interesting to hear from people who has.

    I'd rather see tighter integration
    with the handheld operating
    systems that everyone uses: Palm OS, WinCE, Linux.
    For instance:
    1. For iPAQ's that come with WinCE
    a task switcher and a file explorer that can initiate
    native apps as well as Java apps.
    2. Access to Pocket PC's PIM databases.
    IMHO "Standalone" won't encourage people
    to adopt Personal Java for apps.

    why not build same function in Itunes as Spotify offers ..? I Would definitely buy me access on site.. :-)

    Spotify has a completely different legal and contractual structure, oriented towards subscription services. You never, ever, own the music you hear on Spotify, and both artists and labels are compensated at a minuscule fraction of the quantity they receive when you buy music from the iTunes store. It is not clear that the Spotify model will remain sustainable over time, as artists/labels have little incentive other than promotion to post their work there.
    Apple would have to determine that such an arrangement was worthwhile to them (and you, and all the other parties) before they went that route. Technically, it is not hard for them.

  • I shall wait until Kaspersky URL addon and virtual keyboard are available before upgrading. Why not let us see what addons/ extensions are available for each upgrade without having to download each and uninstall again?

    I have 3.6. It works fine for me. Kaspersky link filter and virtual keyboard are on the toolbar.
    I have upgraded twice now, but each time these and other extensions are not available for the version. So I uninstall and go back to 3.6.
    As you are having this spate of upgrades, it would be so much better if we could know what extensions are and are not available before we upgrade.
    Why not build the upgrades so that extensions work?

    Same problem here too. Curious to see what could be causing this. It has been happening for me for the last two years (South Park). Not too big a deal but it would be great for the auto download to work properly.

  • Why does Build Application vi work in development environment but not in executable; error 1025

    Hello,
    I have an application ("A") that I am trying to build using another application ("BuildA").
    I can create an application for A manually from its project using the Build Specification, and it works fine (A.exe).
    Also, when I run BuildA.vi in the development environment it calls the "Build.vi" correctly and again builds application A.exe just fine.
    Then, when I make BuildA an application (manually) and run BuildA.exe, I would expect it to also create A.exe just like BuildA.vi did in the development environment.
    However, it fails with the error:
    Code: 1025
    Open VI Reference in NI_App_Builder_API.lvlib:Build (path).vi->BuildA.vi<APPEND>
    VI Path: <b>C:\TEMP\AppBuild\BuildA\vi.lib\AppBuilder\BuildTarget.vi</b>
    I noticed this thread , which looks like a similar problem, but no conclusion was reached.
    Why does BuildA.vi work fine in the LabVIEW environment, but the application BuildA.exe does not work?  All paths are hard-coded, so it shouldn't be a path issue.
    Thanks,
    -john

    Interesting code.  I'm curious how you came to decide 324ms in your while loop, and 58 in the other, and then 5136ms at the end.  In any case I suspect this has to do with this line of text in the help of the Build.vi.
    If you plan to run a build specification on the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine, do not include the Build VI in any of the VIs for the build specification.
    I don't fully know what this means but it might be why it isn't working.
    The Build.vi opens all Context (application instances) and then looks for the one named "NI.LV.MxLvProvider".  This I assume is a application instance NI uses to build applications.  It then uses this and opens some other VIs in this instance for the building.  The error you are getting is "Application Reference is invalid" meaning it couldn't find the NI.LV.MxLvProvider instance it needs to build.  Again I believe this maybe because you are in a run-time environment and that instance doesn't exist there.
    At the end of the day I'm guessing since Application Builder is not free, NI probably doesn't include it in the Run-Time engine, which is free.  So you can't build the way you want.  You could have and EXE running in the run-time open an instance in the development, then run your VI from there if you must make this an EXE.  It maybe easier to just edit the BuildA.vi to have a "Run When Opened" so that you double click the VI and it runs which behaves like an EXE sorta.

    Why they do not build also I'macs with Retina display?.
    Is i't to expensive for Apple to do that?,or is i't at the moment impossible with the Technics in the Apple factory?.
    Mabye in the Future Apple can build Imac's with retina display and the newest chipset's build in.
    Dear greetings from a Dutch Apple user with pleasure.

    Maybe Apple has got that idea. However, note how difficult the design and how expensive an iMac with Retina display could be. Just imagine a 27-inch display with a 5120x2880 resolution ;-).
    Anyway, you can send the idea to Apple > http://www.apple.com/feedback

  • Why jvm maintains string pool only for string objects why not for other objects?

    why jvm maintains string pool only for string objects why not for other objects? why there is no pool for other objects? what is the specialty of string?

    rp0428 wrote:
    You might be aware of the fact that String is an immutable object, which means string object once created cannot be manipulated or modified. If we are going for such operation then we will be creating a new string out of that operation.
    It's a JVM design-time decision or rather better memory management. In programming it's quite a common case that we will define string with same values multiple times and having a pool to hold these data will be much efficient. Multiple references from program point/ refer to same object/ value.

    What is Java String Pool? | JournalDev
    Why String is Immutable in Java ? | Javalobby
    Sorry but you are spreading FALSE information. Also, that first article is WRONG - just as OP was wrong.
    This is NO SUCH THING as a 'string pool' in Java. There is a CONSTANT pool and that pool can include STRING CONSTANTS.
    It has NOTHING to do with immutability - it has to do with CONSTANTS.
    Just because a string is immutable does NOT mean it is a CONSTANT. And just because two strings have the exact same sequence of characters does NOT mean they use values from the constant pool.
    On the other hand class String offers the .intern() method to ensure that there is only one instance of class String for a certain sequence of characters, and the JVM calls it implicitly for literal strings and compile time string concatination results.
    Chapter 3. Lexical Structure
    In that sense the OPs question is valid, although the OP uses wrong wording.
    And the question is: what makes class Strings special so that it offers interning while other basic types don't.
    I don't know the answer.
    But in my opinion this is because of the hybrid nature of strings.
    In Java we have primitive types (int, float, double...) and Object types (Integer, Float, Double).
    The primitive types are consessons to C developers. Without primitive types you could not write simple equiations or comparisons (a = 2+3; if (a==5) ...). [autoboxing has not been there from the beginning...]
    The String class is different, almost something of both. You create String literals as you do with primitives (String a = "aString") and you can concatinate strings with the '+' operator. Nevertheless each string is an object.
    It should be common knowledge that strings should not be compared with '==' but because of the interning functionality this works surprisingly often.
    Since strings are so easy to create and each string is an object the lack ot the interning functionality would cause heavy memory consumption. Just look at your code how often you use the same string literal within your program.
    The memory problem is less important for other object types. Either because you create less equal objects of them or the benefit of pointing to the same object is less (eg. because the memory foot print of the individual objects is almost the same as the memory footpint of the references to it needed anyway).
    These are my personal thoughts.
    Hope this helps.
    bye

    With previous editions of iTunes for Windows, I could play a CD at the same time as it was being imported. That does not seem to work anymore. Why not, and is there a way to do both with the most current version? I am running a Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.1 and the most recent vesion of iTunes, which, in all other respects, works well. I just can't listen to an album for the 1/2 to 1 hour that it takes to import it into my library.

  • Problem Installing Adobe Flex Builder 3 (Standalone)

    I have attempted a few times today to install the Flex Builder 3 standalone file, but I am having issues. I am currently using Adobe CS4 Design Premium on my computer.
    I am new to this type of application development.  Currently, I mainly used flash to create my interactive applications, but I need to branch out to create more complex applications.  As I already know actionscript 3.0, I was interesting into getting into Flex.  I do not know Javascript, C++, etc.
    Once I download the standalone file to my desktop and run the installer, I do not choose to download Flash Player 9 because I already have nor do I choose do download the Coldfusion or JSEclipse Plug-in as I do not have Eclipse on my computer (it comes with the standalone as I have been led to believe).  After running the installer, it almost gets to the end and then I get the following error message:
    I click OK, it finishes the install and says

    Can anybody help me on this?  Is there something I missing prior to download?

    We're in the same boat here - the the behavour of xsd:all in
    BETA 3 renders our Flex app virtually useless because of
    communication issues with the backend webservice. We have studied
    the proposed workaround suggested, unfortunately we only control
    the FLEX app - we do not control the WS we have to integrate with.
    As a result we've gone back to BETA 2 to do some critical
    changes in the software but the "Beta expired." message we've been
    receiving is really not well received. As we have been very
    proactive in supporting development in the BETA phases including
    reporitng bugs, we think that Adobe shoudl also have some
    flexibility here and offer ways to extend the BETA 2. We're not
    asking for any type of support during that phase - purely the
    ability to compile our source until we can implement the full work
    around which will allow the software to run on BETA 3. The
    suggestion to change dates or go to previous restore points do not
    work well here with our numerous developers.

  • DDIC objects not existing in standalone WAS

    Hi all,
    Here is our pb :
    We started a bsp developpement on a R3 system with WAS6.20.
    We transported our code (only the code concerning bsp application) to a new standalone WAS 6.40. But on this new machine a lot of ddic elements were not available. Especially all BAPI structures (BAPIORDERS, BAPIITEM...).
    I don't undestand why these structures are not part of a basic standalone was. Is it a was installation issue ?
    Anyway is there a way to pick the ddic elements from was 6.20 to export them to was 6.40 ?
    Other solution would be to modify our code and create new data structures and elements but it seems quite a painful job to me !
    Thanks
    Sylvain V.

    That situation sounds fairly normal.  R/3 has extra components (APPL is one of them) installed on top of the standalone Netweaver system (basic Netweaver is just ABA, BASIS, and BW).  Obviously any data elements or structures that belong to packages (development classes) that are part of R/3 won't be there.
    I wouldn't necessarily suggest trying to transport them from an R/3 system. These objects are in SAP's name range and transport scheme. I think you would run into considerable problems trying to export/import them.
    You can recreate them by hand as new objects within your customer name range.  This is what I used to do quite often.  Another option would be to use the BAPI Browser to create local definitions for the structures.  I have also used XML and BAPI function module wrappers to avoid having to recreate structures. A final option would be to install your 640 system as a full R/3 (ERP2004) installation and not just a standalone Netweaver system.  This will make your system considerably larger however.

  • Why not support tree/shuttle layers for Structs/JSP in jheadstart 10.1.2.0.

    Why not support tree/shuttle layers for Structs/JSP in jheadstart 10.1.2.0.
    I want make tree style and shuttle style with Structs/JSP(jheadstart 10.1.2.0) in my project.
    Can you help me.
    Thanks for your help.

    UIX provides tree and shuttle components that generate all the complex javascript required for these UI component.
    We have no plans to create similar javascript ourselves so we can generate this with JSP. The future strategy for JHeadstart will be based on JSF / ADF Faces where we leverage UI components that have this functionality built-in, like UIX has today. With the JSF standard out there, we expect lots of sophisticated new UI components to come out, built by dhtml/javascript/ajax experts (which we are not).
    Our focus (and core competency) is on generating applications by wiring together these sophisticated UI components, and not so much on building new UI components.
    If you want to build this today using JSP I suggest you do some shopping on the internet, you wll probably find some sample code for trees and shuttles.

  • Why not unify all drivers?

    I know the question is stupid, but why don't unify all models of sound cards in a single package drivers ?
    I believe that would facilitate for the company and for users since we could only get a single model Drive and the installation recognize the type of card and install the necessary software while keeping the core drive updated.
    But why not?

    But drivers contains API dll`s for patented/licensed technologies, thus are subject for regulations. Software is restricted even more - my Titanium HD package (with noted on the box PowerDVD featured) had no disk with PowerDVD - i must install tons of bloatware from DVD, after this a special utility connects to Cyberlink site, verify my hardware and download a special build. Creative is really a minor partner for IP holders for many years, so holders can dictate whatever conditions they want.

  • Loading new class files when they are not available when the JVM starts

    Simple Question
    Is it possible to load class if it was not compiled when the original JVM was launched?
    More Detailed Question
    Our build system is getting a slight tweak with a new test runner. After our build system compiles the file, I would like to be able to load the files that have just been compiled.
    Our build system runs inside its own JVM and calls ant scripts to run the different processes(Separate JVM). The new test runner will also be called from the build system(Same JVM) but not as an ant target. Is it possible to call the newly compiled files from inside the build system JVM if they had not been created on the start of that JVM using reflection?
    Thanks in Advanced!

    public class t
        public static void main(String args[])
         throws Exception
         Writer out = new FileWriter("Foo.java");
         out.write("public class Foo implements Runnable {\n");
         out.write("    public void run() {\n");
         out.write("        System.out.println(\"run like the wind\");\n");
         out.write("    }\n");
         out.write("}\n");
         out.close();
         Runtime.getRuntime().exec("javac Foo.java").waitFor();
         ((Runnable) Class.forName("Foo").newInstance()).run();
    }
