Why should I use Web Services?

I am managing an Internet project for my company. We exhaustively use IIS, ASP and SQL 2000 Server and until today we feel very comfortable with those tools. We successfully developed some COMs also to make additional work. As a personal interest in my free time I am learning Java. I began two months ago and using certain APIs downloaded from the net I could develope applications and applets for an SMS messaging system interacting with a real cellular phone provider. I also had to learn about RMI and implement it in this project. That system now is working nice. So I was encouraged to learn more about Java and I found the Web Services world. Everybody is talking about it(and .NET of course), in the net, in magazines etc.. So, I decided to learn about Web Services.
I read these paragraphs at the beginning of the Web Services Tutorial:
"In a typical Web services scenario, a business application sends a request to a service at a given URL using the SOAP protocol over HTTP. The service receives the request, processes it, and returns a response. An often-cited example of a Web service is that of a stock quote service, in which the request asks for the current price of a specified stock, and the response gives the stock price. This is one of the simplest forms of a Web service in that the request is filled almost immediately, with the request and response being parts of the same method call."
Maybe I am not able to understand the concept but this is more or less what I get using for example an ASP or an RMI or a Servlet, don't I?. Ok, there is no SOAP involved in those methods mentioned but still I have a request, and response and so on. So, what is the advantage I will get working with a Web Service?. Can anybody explain me?

I think you stil not so clear about the web services. Web services is a services that provided at Internet. It can advertise their services and allow the other people to invoke it. The advantages is the customer no need the fully code their application and they only can use the metod that provided on the Internet. Besides that, the the application customer and application business can straight away communicated. It allow the diffrent application which write in diffrent language the communicated each other. If the website, they only can communicated with the server only, not the application of the other side.

My name is Gandharv Sirohi. I am a student, and new to EJB. I want to know why should I use EJB, before I can start learning it if every thing can be done using Java Servlets and JSP.

It's true there are a lot of services available to both the web tier and the EJB tier. One of the
real strengths of EJB is support for transactional business logic. Web components can
explicitly demarcate transactions via UserTransaction, but container-managed transaction
support in EJB components at the business method level offers a much simpler approach
for developing and maintaining such applications. An example of some EJB services not available
in the web tier are : method-level security, RMI-IIOP access, message-driven beans,
transactional/persistent timer service, stateful components, extended container-managed
persistence contexts, guaranteed single-threaded execution, and interceptors.
Of course there are many services available to the web tier that are not in EJB. It's not
about picking one of the two that should always be used. Like any tool/technology, each has its strengths, weaknesses, and design center.

Why should i use Apple 'Mail' if i use others like G-Mail?

Simply: Can or should i just remove 'A-Mail' so it's icon stops jumping & bothering me to sign up?

BACKGROUND, if necessary:
•For years I've used only the Mail service of my ISP, Dslextreme ('DSLX').
I've never used Apple 'Mail' , & never set it up to service mail from any of the mail services that i do use.
I never activated 'A-Mail' and i don't think there is mail in it. Nor have i deactivated 'A-Mail', and it's still on my screen in the 'Dock'.
•But from time to time, and inexplicably to me, the 'A-Mail' icon seems prompted to start 'jumping' and wanting me to use it somehow, like sign up for it. This was a minor annoyance so i just clicked to close it and so ignored it and moved on.

Apple mail is simply the default email application in OS X. It is not an email service/email address.
Using an email application, you can read all your email in the same place and store them on your local drive.
To answer your question, "Why should i use Apple 'Mail' if i use others like G-Mail?"
You use a mail application for the same reason you use the internet when you could simply drive to the store to buy things or go get a newspaper or go to the library or go to the movie theater, etc.

Sounds like you simply use a web browser to view all your email.
If you want to send an email from a web page, you need to copy an email address, open your email account in your web browser, create a new email and paste the address.

Why should we use WSDL for developing webservices

i seriously doubt you want to use wsdl4j unless you are doing really advanced webservice work. assuming you are developing this webservice from scratch, you basically want to use JAXWS: define an appropriate interface and your value classes, and let JAXWS do the rest. metro is the JAXWS implementation included in the oracle jdk and it has great tutorials and reference documentation online. i'd suggest you start here: http://metro.java.net/getting-started/

Workflow : User Decision on Email using Web Services

I have the requirement of sending User Decision on Email Using Web Services.
Eg : I have created one ECR Using T-Code "CC31" and on status change "CC32" of this ECR, My workflow triggers. Now what i want is to send the User Decision on maintain User Email ID as URL link. This link will contain the ECR Nos. There will be "N" nos of Links send on email depending on Requirement. By clicking on that Particular Link , Action taken should be updated in sap.
URL Link is just like confirmation link send on our email id during user Registration on some Website or when we create our Gmail / Yahoo Account.

Why not use the extended notifications? - it has an option to send links to approve/reject or any other option in the decision task and use a standard web service. See the document attached to note 1646056 - Workflow Quick Start Guide to Extended Notifications.

How to get the list of values for a dynamic parameter using Web Services SDK?

I am struggling to get the list of values for a dynamic parameter of a report.I am using Java Web Services SDK ... I tried to use PromptInfo.getLOV().getValues() method but it does not work.First of all ... is this possible (to get the list of values for a dynamic param) using Web Services?Second of all, if this is possible, how should I do it ... it seems it works fine when running the report from CMC. It asks for DB logon info and after that it provides a list of values.Thx 

Your assumption is correct. We are trying to get the LOVs from the Crystal Report. I was not aware that this is not supported by Web Services SDK.We used Web Services SDK to integrated the Crystal Reports in our web application. We implemented some basic actions for reports: schedule, view instances, run ad-hoc reports.We encountered this problem when trying to run/schedule reports with dynamic parameters (a list of values from DB). We were unable to get the LOVs.Please let me know if you can think of an alternative to look at.Thanks a lot,Catalin

Invoking a scenario using web service

Hi Experts,
Could anyone pls suggest how to pass variables from SOAP to ODI 11g(11.1.1.6.3)
Here we are using wsdl utility to invoke a scenario using web service and trying to pass a variable like the below
The scenario is triggered successfully without passing a parameter.
But when i try to pass a variable like the below,am getting error
Variables name='PROJECT_CODE'
Variables value='JI-2015'
In ODI 11g, i have generated a scenario with a variable PROJECT_CODE as a declare variable and tried triggering from both the environments
From ODI 11g:
When I try to trigger the scenario from wsdl, in that variable step(in operator), I got error as ODI-17546: Specified variable not found in the Repository
But in the work repository SNP_VAR table I could still see the variable name under VAR_NAME column.
From ODI 10g:
When i try to do the same from odi 10g, the scenario execution is success.
But the variable had taken only NULL value instead of taking the value which i passed from wsdl.
Could you pls advise where am going wrong

OutofMemory Error while sending file to database using Web services

I have a file of 30MB to be written to the MySQL database. I am doing this in Axis web services and it gives me the following error:
(I am using Tomcat as the application server and Apache as the web server, Axis 1.3 and MySQL standard 5.0.21 version. I have set the minimum and maximum heap size and it works well without using the web service (just uploading and downloading from the database using a simple java program). Another thing to notice is that I can send a file of almost 10MB size to the database using web service without any problem. But it doesn't work with the 30 MB .)

Sorry for the delayed response here, forget to add it to my watchlist. I didn't catch if you were using Java 1.5 or not. Prior to 1.5 the default maximum heap space was 64MB which with the overhead of the appserver might be your problem.
Take a look at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/vm/gc-ergonomics.html and the java -Xmx <size> command line option to change the default (I believe the size argument is in bytes, but don't hold me to that). I think you can pass that as a command line option to the startup script, but you should check the doco to see if it needs to be wrapped in some other arg etc.,
I seem to recall running into this same problem a few years back when I had a servlet doing some intense graphics processing on the fly and setting this option fixed the problem.

Report that uses web services as data source, prompts for database logon

I have a crystal report that uses web services as a data source. When I deploy the report to Infoview it prompts me for a database username and password. Since I am not using a database it should not prompt me for these. I tried various options in the CMC->database settings for this report but it still prompts me for the database logon info or tells me that the database logon information is incorrect.
The report work fine in the Crystal Reports Designer.
Does anyone know how I can prevent this report from prompting me for the database logon info ?

How to use web services in JSF app

I am unsure if this is the right forum for this question. Let me know if it is not - and where I should go.
Anyways, I'm building a JSF web app, in which there is a datatable page displaying some business data. The app is going to be deployed and run in the customer's web server, but the data to be displayed is from the business solution provider's database. Currently the provider supplies web services to retrieve the data. So, my task is to call these web services from my JSF page, get and display the data.
I've never used web services before. Can someone give me a quick start, as what I need to know to use these web services, and how to use them in coding terms. I googled the web quite a bit and finally decided to turn to SDN forum.

How to create a Sales Lead and Sales Lead Contact using Web Services

I have a setup of oracle9ias release 2 on solaris machine. I have made a web-service which is deployed on nt machine on weblogic server. I have made a call from my form (forms9i) to this web-service. When i try to use that web-service after deploying my form on solaris, it initializes the web-service and performs the action successfully. Now the problem is that my form also makes a call to report server to generate a report. The problem is when i initialize the web-service and uses its function it works but after that making a call to report server will fail. Also if i make a call to report server first, it generates the report and then i make call to the web-service, then that web-service fails to run. And in both cases, the forms application stops saying session has aborted.
Why cant i make call to both the things in one session of application? What could be the reason for that? Need help urgently.

can any one provide an example ABAP source code to connect to third party systems using web service calls? The base system is CRM.

Do you want to call a web service in a remote system, or do you want to provide a web service?
If you want to call a web service you should create a proxy object via SE80. Open your development package, right click on the tree entry and choose: Create -> Enterprise Service / Web Service -> Proxy Object and provide the needed information (including the WSDL description file). You may then use the proxy object to call the web service (if the connection and everything else works right).
