Widescreen Format custom preset in Compressor 4?

I used to do HD (16X9) format only, but ever since I saw other views, especially really cool looking cinematic music videos carrying the widescreen format I've been wanting to apply that to my videos. Currently my only known solution to this is simply making an image that fits exactly on my frame with two black bars to letter box my 16X9 videos in FCPX. I tried making a custom preset in Compressor 4 with the dimension of the video set to 1920X800 which is exactly 2.40X1 in aspect ratio. I also turned the pixel aspect ratio to sqauare but the results still looked weird. The video was simply squished down with a large black bar at the top and the dimension of the video was still 1920*1080.
Enough with the rubbish (I'm not good at explaining things). Does anyone know how to formuate a custom preset in Compressor 4 so that when I export from FCPX using Compressor presets the file would be natively 1920*800 and that the excess pixels are trimmed away automatically? Or is there an option in FCPX itself that allows me to set the aspect ratio of my video to widescreen in the first place?
Thanks for the help in advance!

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried to export a clip with a black JPEG file from MPEG Steamclip at 1920*800 24fp, but when I put it in my timeline in FCPX the video option window droped down saying that the format is not recognised and forced me to use the presets the came with it. Any other solution?
Thanks
Damon

  • Moving/Copying Compressor 3.5 Custom Presets to Compressor 4

Very easy, very quick, here's the info:
    http://www.fcproxuniversity.com/downloads/tutorials/Compressor3.5_To_4_CustomPre sets.pdf
I'm still working on a way to move the Apple presets from 3.5 to 4, but will post if it's possible.

Thanks Russ for the suggestions and the recommendation for FCS Remover. I will certainly take that approach.
I can't see any reason I would go back to FCP7 since all my cameras are AVCHD and it just didn't work for me in FCP7.  Most of my videos are longer than 5 mins and/or are multicam where FCP7 was always getting the video and audio out of sync when the multicam was about 12 mins or longer and when the single clips were over 15 mins.  I tried converting the clips before hand, stream clip, transcoding in fcp7, etc and nothing worked.  That's how the "rough road" began to Premiere Pro then finally to FCPX.
Also, Compressor was never a real friendly app in my opinion, i never once used motion, and other than DVD Studio Pro which I really really liked, I have no reason for the product.  A few DV/HDV projects that I have possible, I'll just recapture via FCPX or have a friend capture in fcp7 and shoot me the HDD.
And for DVD studio pro (now end of life) I can just use Toast Titanium 12 that is finally pretty easy to menu and set up.  I would still like to see a NEWER more friendly DVD Studio Pro and if I could get it stand alone or something close to it then for sure FCS2 and FCS3 upgrade (full set) would be "outta there"  :-)

  • Where Are The Custom Preset Files Stored?

I deleted FCS 2 before installing FCS 3 and unfortunately all of my custom presets in Compressor were lost.
I have got Time Machine with the old Compressor but I don't know where the old preset files are stored.
Ideally I would like to copy them to the new version as re-writing them will be a pain, assuming I can still remember what they were!

    Ian,
Now aren't you glad you went to the trouble of setting up Time Machine?

  • Export Quicktime Custom Preset

Sorry you can thrash me if you like, but Ive searched, rtfm and still confused. I have to export quicktimes all the time, not that it's important but our smokes across the hall only take quicktime at the moment. So I go export quicktime and scroll down the mile long list of codecs and pick custom and then pick animation. How can I get my custom preset which is just Animation codec to show up on that long list so I don't have to go to custom clear at the bottom and then pick animation. I thought I saved it as a custom but it doesn't show up. Basically, I want Export-export quicktime-settings-animation. Not Export-export quicktime-settings-scroll-custom setting-animation. And last thing, why when I do a batch export can I not choose the animation codec in the list
    thanks

I think you better build a custom preset in Compressor and use it. You can export batchs of files/sequences that way too.
    Hope that helps !

  • Presets from Compressor 3 Missing after Install.

Anyone noticed and resolved the issue of missing presets after upgrading to Cmopressor 4.  I haven't looked at all of them, but I don't have the DVD presets I had before.  This goes right in line with Apple's DVD drive removal from new machines, but I still need some.  I just want all the presets I had in version 3 to version 4.

You can move your Custom Presets from Compressor 3.5 to 4 easily.
The Apple presets aren't so easy, I've been working on this awhile.
My suggestion is to go into Compressor 3.5, save those presets as Custom presets, and follow the instructions for moving Customs to Compressor 4.

  • Compressor Custom Presets Missing ...

I have upgraded to Compressor 4. And now all of my custom presets are missing. Is there any way to get them back?

Thanks for posting your solution.  I've dug around and found where the presets reside (user:  library:  application support:  compressor), and sent them to clients, etc.  Never occured to me to just drag them from the settings window.

If your on windows, perhaps this script will suffice:

It may work in pse 6-pse 9 as well.

  • What is the best setting for export movie in widescreen format?

Please tell me what is the best setting for exporting movie in Widescreen format?

Like in After effect we use "NTSC D1 Widescreen Square Pixel".,
Carefully examine the codec and pixel dimensions of that output file. That's certainly easy for an experienced VFX person like yourself.
Then carefully look over the presets in FCP to find the same attibutes. You can also use the online help system for FCP and search for "D1"
However, your question remains unanswerable because we don't know how you're getting to the monitor. What are you playing back you AE sequences on that displays them on your LCD? You're assuming we know what you're doing and, I assure you, we do not.

  • Question on Premiere Elements 8 Custom Presets

I have Premiere Elements 8. When starting a new project and going through the presets, none match what my camera is recording. Is there a way to create a custom preset? I tried starting a new project and going to "edit>preferences>general" but it won't let me change any of the fields. I did find an old thread where someone had something you could download to add more presets, but it was a bad link.
The video I am wanting to edit is 1280x720, 59.4 fps, mpeg. But the camera(gopro HD) also has other resoloution/framerate options. I also have a Nikon D3s slr, not sure if there is a preset for that as I haven't gotten that far yet. It will open and let me edit in the other presets but I want it right.
Hopefully someone can help me out!

I understand how you feel. PrE is a great program, however with the number of formats/CODEC's and their often tweaked specs., I feel that the lack of a custom Preset is a drawback, and have filed a Feature Request with every version I have used. As I also have PrPro, this is less an issue for me, but feel that it could be so useful to other users. So far - nothing. I realize that Adobe has a balancing act with PrE and PrPro, in that one should expect something extra for an additional US $600 +/-, but I would think that extracting and re-working the existing code from PrPro here, would not be THAT big a deal. Still, I am not a coder, so perhaps it would be much more difficult, than I imagine. Maybe PrE 10? Unless you do have a screaming deal on PrPro CS 5.5, I think that I wouuld hold off until ~ Sept., as that is traditionaly when PrE's newest version is introduced - just in time to stock the shelves in time for Holiday sales. If more flexibility in Project settings are not included in PrE 10, then PrPro would be a viable option. As the general mechanics of the two programs is very similar, all one has to do is learn where things are located in PrPro, and get used to doing more things manually (with added control). Personally, I like working that way better, than having less control and simple buttons to push, but that is just me. Many decry having to do things with less automation, or having to use a separate bundled program, Encore, for all DVD/BD authoring, where PrE has that capability built in. All that said, I probably recommend PrE 10x more often, than I do PrPro.
Also, and especially with consumer material, PrE usually gets those in Presets, before they show up in PrPro. AVCHD and Import of VOB's are but two such examples. Still, with the Desktop/Custom Preset in PrPro, having the Presets is less of a big deal, but pure, true native support for a format/CODEC certainly is.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - though too late for PrE 10, do file the Feature Request. The more requests, the more likely that the feature will make its way into PrE.

  • Custom Presets Don't Work

I can save a custom preset, but when I load it, it has no effect on the sound. I have to load default effects and tweak them every time. Is there a way to troubleshoot this and get it working properly?
    Audition CC
    Mac OS 10.8.2

I tried to recreate your problem rendering Quicktimes to Animation + Alpha, ProRes 4444 + Alpha, and just plain H.264 and I didn't experience any darkening in all three renders.
The Quicktime animation codec is pretty ancient and hasn't been updated since Quicktime Pro 7.  ProRes 4444 (AKA 4x4) is also as good as Lossless and has Alpha with a Depth option of Trillions of Colors +.  I would suggest using that.  In the Output Module box where it says Video Output choose Channels: RGB + Alpha, Depth: Trillions of Colors+, Color: Premultiplied (Matted) with Format Options set to ProPres 4x4.

  • Locking the 16:9 Widescreen format?

If I had a 16:9 Widescreen video placed into iDVD properly, with a widescreen menu too, is there a way to "lock" the widescreen format so if a person watched my dvd on a 4:3 tv (standard tv), they would see it with a letterbox, no matter if the dvd player was set on PS (Pan and Scan) or Letterbox? In other words, can iDVD preserve the widescreen format so that it CANNOT be cropped on a dvd player? When I used iDVD 06, I created multiple widescreen dvds which I gave to friends, however, they complained that the video seemed cropped and the text was sometimes cut off. I assume they had their dvd player set to PS (Pan and Scan), which crops a 16:9 video and makes it 4:3, thus cutting off the sides. I like the multiformat of iDVD, especially when my widescreen dvd's actually play correctly on a widescreen tv, however, is their a way to lock it widescreen for a 4:3 tv, and keep it widescreen for a 16:9 tv??? Thanks, gategoer

The usual drill is to set the project preset to match the properties of your source media so that the program is directed to set up the right space in the Edit area monitor for editing purposes. So, if you have 4:3 format, then your project preset would probably be NTSC DV Standard or it PAL counterpart.
But, under the circumstances, look at this idea....
Open your Premiere Elements 12 project to the Expert workspace and make sure that the project preset is the default 1080i30
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    Full HD1080i30
    or its PAL counterpart
Import your 4:3 video into the project with Add Media/Files and Folders/Project Assets from where you drag your video to the Expert workspace Timeline.
Click on the screen so that you see a bounding box around the image there and drag on the bounding box handles to scale the image just to display in the screen with no black borders.
    Publish+Share/Social Websites/YouTube with preset = High Definition Video for YouTube 1920 x 1080.
What does that look like once it is uploaded to YouTube 16:9?
The idea goes against the grain if you are starting with 720 x 480 (or PAL counterpart 720 x 576) and taking it to 1920 x 1080. But see if you can get away with it.
In your scheme of things, are black borders acceptable. What I am asking you to try ends up with 16:9 with no black borders. But I am not too comfortable with the SD to HD.
Please review and then let us know the outcome.
In questions such as these, please give properties of the source media.

  • Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio, but when i capture it turns to widescreen format

I shot my footage in standard 4:3 aspect ratio, and when i import it the clip looks fine, but when i drag it to the timeline it goes into widescreen format, and i can't figure out why it is doing this. If i select the clip from my browser window and play it in my viewer window it plays fine in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but when i drag it to the timeline it goes to wide screen and it stays that way. Please help

Sounds like your sequence settings are off. If you hit command>0 (zero) you should be able to change them. One way to know they are off for sure is if when you drag your clip to the timeline you get the red line above it meaning it needs rendering. You should never have to render if your sequence settings are right.
In sequence settings make sure all your settings match the format of you clip. Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio, Editing Timebase, and compressor. That should do it.
You could also just use the Easy Setup to change the whole project to match DV.

I'm trying to make a custom h.264 preset. I select multi-pass and CD/DVD delivery. But when I save the preset, it reverts back to single-pass / Download.
    Is this a bug?

    Hey !
I'm having the same problem. I just exported a bunch of reference movies out of FCP because I wanted to compress them to H.264 overnight. When I try to make a preset in Compressor with Multi-Pass, I get the same problem.
(No problem in setting Multi-Pass from QT Conversion in FCP...)
    What's up with this?
I'm running Compressor 2.0.1 with QT 7.1.1 and OS 10.4.7
