Wifi setup: wifi-menu fails but wpa_supplicant works

Guys,
I've installed archlinux for the first time, and I'm mighty pleased. I've been following the installation guides, and have run into a slightly annoying issue.
When I try to setup my wifi(WPA) with "wifi-menu", I end up with "CONNECTION FAILED" error message. The steps I'm following are.
# wifi-menu
     In ncurses
    1. choose the SSID
    2. Enter the password
    Result - CONNECTION FAILED
However, running wpa_supplicant command from commandline works well.
# wpa_supplicant -B -i wlp3s0 -c <(wpa_passphrase "ssid" "password")
.. works!
So, wifi drivers are properly loaded for sure. I believe that wifi-menu internally uses wpa_supplicant. Why would "wifi-menu" command fail? Ultimately I want to use netctl profiles to automatically enable the wifi rather than manually enabling wi-fi every time. Any ideas?

@luisgmarine, I have tried it with and without the single quotes -- no difference. Thanks for the idea though.
@progandy, Interesting. I'm not sure how to figure out if it's an issue with the router communication or not, though.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas and thoughts. I'll mark this as solved, because it is working; I was just curious to see if there was an apparent explanation.

I tried exporting the enviroment variables from /etc/makepkg.conf, to no avail. I also tried adding the girara include files to CFLAGS, but it throws the same kind of error about some gtk dependency.
I don't know if this is a general issue, but as I can compile it through makepkg I don't think this is due to zathura.
Does anyone have a clue on what could be wrong here?

In the PKGBUILD, they are cloning the repo by doing :
    _gitroot="git://pwmt.org/zathura.git"
    _gitname="zathura"
    git clone $_gitroot
    cd $_gitname && git checkout --track -b develop origin/develop
Are you doing the same ?

  • N73 firmware update failed but still working?

Few days ago I saw new firmware for N73 is out. Downloaded program, stared to update firmware.
After cca. 90% of progress bar I heard same sound you hear every time you plug in/out your phone over USB cable. My heart almost stopped since I heard stories you must not unplug phone during firmware update, that it will not work after that. Suprisingly software offered me to repeat update process!
I clicked OK and it started all over again.
Once again after reaching about 90% progress bar instalation stopped with same un plugg sound. This time there was no repeat update offer. I tryed everything but update din't work.
I plugged USB out of comp and phone and tryed to turn on phone. I wasn't able to turn in on! Then I took out battery, put it back in and turned on phone.
All worked, menu was in english, but I had option to change it back to croatian again. Installed old programs and they all worked. Voice dialing working, camera working... all working.
    What the hell happened?
Why installation stopped on 90% and my phone is working without problems on NEW firmware? Bug in Nokia Firmware update software?

I've understood it's quite normal that the update prosedure may seem to stop even for some minutes and then go on again. The connection between the phone and computer will also break and then reconnect couple of times...
Are you sure, you did wait long enough before unplugging your phone (at least some minutes)?
But if your phone has the new firmware now and everything is working fine so I hope there is no problem!

I am trying to reach a web site using Safari on my iPhone 3GS, but it fails to connect (although it worked a month or so ago). When I try to reach the same web site using the Opera app it successfully connects.

    try
    document.myform.myelement
forms[0] returns the first form on the html page.
so forms[0].myform is duplication - looking for the form twice.
When debugging javascript, I would suggest writing into the address bar like this:
    javascript:alert(document)
    javascript:alert(document.myform)
    javascript:alert(document.myform.myelement)
It executes the javascript directly from the address bar. Building up the javascript expression, you can see where you take a "wrong turn"

  • FMS4 Sample player RTMP fails but HTTP works

FMS4: localhost or localhost:8134 the same:
For the Stream Video (RTMP) I cannot connect; but using the PLAY VIDEO(HTTP) is fine.
RTMP show: "we are unable to connect to the content you've requested...."
Currently config enabled HTTP Proxy and allow all in/outbound connection in windows 7 firewall.
BTW, this is for the samples;  the "dynamic stream" and "interactive" are all fine.
    Any idea?
    Thanks!

I installed FMS4 on my Windows 7 machine. And for me everything is working fine. Is it like just after completing the installation, when it opens index.html then sample play for rtmp is not working?
Have you tried playing other videos using rtmp?

  • NETWORK marked [FAIL] but works...

    Hi everyone,
Recently, during boot, network is marked as failed but everyhting works properly... This only happens with wireless connection (ipw2100), ethernet is marked [DONE] and works too
Thanks in advance for any advice...
    Cheers

I'm not sure if I completely understand your post, but if you have multiple network interfaces and one fails, then network shows fail even if others were successful. There's a bug report filed about it, but it's been quite a while without being fixed...
And if that doesn't answer your question then ignore me.

i am setting u a new time capsule. i already have a wifi setup in my office. now i want to use this time capsule just as a wireless backup machine. do i still need to attached a DSL cable, or it can connect to my existing wifi and start working ?

You probably can, but this type of configuration is not recommended or supported by Apple.
Two cautions if you want to try this:
    1)  The Time Capsule has to be configured to "Join" your existing wireless network in this type of setup...and to do that, you must know the exact type of wireless security that your network is using.
    2)  Backups are likely going to take twice as long. The wireless signal must travel from your computer to the wireless router and then from the wireless router back to the Time Capsule.  Two "hops"......even if the computer is located close to the Time Capsule.
If you want to try this, we can tell you how....but with no guarantees on your results....since this is not officially supported.

  • OS X 10.8.4 wifi says "connection failed", but connects anyway; cannot save password

I am using OS X 10.8.4 that came with my MBP. When I connect to my home wifi that requires a WPA 2 password, it says "Connection Failed", but anyway connects to the internet. Also, my password is not being saved, and I need to enter it everytime.
After reading several forums, I have already tried the following:
    1. removing airport preference list from Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    2. Removing network password from the keychain
    3. Using Keychain first aid
    4. Using disk utility and doing repair disk.
    5. Doing DHCP release in Network Preferences.
    6. Removing my network from the preferred network list and connecting again.
I am using a D-link modem. It should not be a problem, because the same MBP could remember the password before. The problem happened when I tried to fix my wifi because it would take long to connect after waking from sleep, when I deleted the airport preferences list, and removed the keyring.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

What TC do you have? Model number direct from the base is a big help, it will be A1 followed by 3 numbers.. eg
A1409 Gen 4.. The new AC is A1470
    How is it setup?
I need the whole network setup. what modem/router, how is the TC connected etc??
I also need to know what IP the ipod gets, so I can see what mode the TC or network router is working in.

  • Perfect wifi reception, IP-parameters correct, but doesn't work

    Hi all,
In my house I have several computers connecting to the internet through a Belkin N1 wireless router. There usually are 2 macbooks and 1 mac mini (c2d 2.0GHz), all now running Snow Leopard. Since the mini doesn't support N-networking, I've disabled that in the router. The macbooks connect perfectly, no problem there. The mac mini is another story.
When I bought it it ran Leopard, and contrary to the Macbooks it usually connected with a measly 2 bars in the wifi-indicator. But it worked. Since I upgraded it to Snow Leopard, it has perfect 4 bar reception all of the time, but it doesn't actually work. 90% of the time it is totally isolated from the network, despite showing perfect reception and all tcp/ip parameters configured correctly. If I monitor the connection by pinging the router, I see it works for a few seconds, and then most of the ping packets fail with either a timeout or a 'host is down'. It's not just the router, the mac mini can't reach the macbooks either. It appears that switching airport off and on helps, but mostly just for a few seconds, if I'm lucky it'll work for roughly half an hour.
Changing from dhcp to manual configuration makes no difference. The connection always works long enough for dhcp to retrieve the network parameters.
I'm pretty experienced with network stuff, but a system that indicates that all is well while it doesn't actually work, doesn't really give me any starting leads. What can I do?

Well, iStumbler answered some questions and created some new ones: Wifi reception is not erratic at all, it's constantly terrible, a stable 20%. All that time the menubar indicator happily reports 4 bars. Still, while both indicators show no variation at all, the actual network functionality will always go from perfect to nothing at all, a few seconds after switching on airport. Switching airport off and on again consistently helps for getting a few seconds of connectivity.
One afternoon, the indicator in the menubar correctly indicated the poor reception. Can you guess what happened? Yep, the network functioned properly for hours.
So it seems I have two issues to deal with; one is the poor reception that only the mini seems to suffer from (now there are some net interference issues in that corner of the room too, so I have some leads to follow there), and a bug in the Snow Leopard airport driver that at least makes it indicate a totally wrong reception quality, but probably also messes up the actual communication (since it should work with the poor reception, and it did until I upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6). Come to think of it, when installing the Snow Leopard upgrade, I had no problems downloading the huge amounts of online updates. So it might actually be a bug recently introduced.
The search goes on.. unfortunately without having internet radio on the hifi system while searching

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:
