WiFi solution using Telstra wireless USB modem

Having perused the many discussions concerning difficulties with wireless networking using OS X Lion, I now have little confidence as a new Mac owner in establishing such an internet connection unaided .
After much technical support, I come to realise that my current telstra USB modem (sierra wireless compass 885) being used with a pc laptop is not directly compatible with OS X 10.7.3.
My basic need is to have an internet connection on my Macbook and an ideal situation of being able to network with pc, Apple TV and possibly a backup device such as time capsule.
So, I figure my options are to either purchase a new compatible USB modem and router,  or purchase a wifi router that will allow me to connect my Mac to the internet wirelessly through the existing pc connection.
Please advise on the viability of these options, insofar as the likelihood of establishing and maintaining such a network without the need for a fixed line ethernet ADSL type connection. Further to this, I would appreciate any recommendations for suitable modems and routers.

Do you need a modem because you have a dial-up ISP? There are several USB modems that work with Macs listed on Amazon. Just search for USB modems and you'll be able to find customer comments suggesting ones that work with Macs. There is a US Robotics on Amazon with reviews that say that it works with Lion -
http://www.amazon.com/USRobotics-USR5637-FaxModem-Windows-Linux/dp/B0013FDLM0/re f=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335769698&sr=8-1
If you have a DSL or cable modem, I would suggest in investing in a good wireless router so that you could connect all your computers. For Time Machine, I don't use the wireless drives that Apple sells, I just use a G-Drive Firewire drive. There are a lot of good outers on the market - I have a LinkSys (Cisco) that I bought a couple of years ago that is a great little 4-port router. Try http://home.cisco.com/en-us/home for a selection of good routers (others here may have other brand preferences, but Cisco has always worked well for me with minimum set-up required).
More specifics would help - what Mac you have, if your ISP is dial-up, DSL or cable, etc.

  • Buffering video downlowds via Quicktime, when using a HSDPA USB modem.

    Hi,
Does any one else experience very poor streaming performance via Quicktime, when using a HSDPA USB modem. Every time, when using the Quicktime player and receiving data via a HSDPA USB modem, there seems to be minimal buffering of that data, so that the video quality is extremely pixelated and virtually unwatchable; are there settings that can be altered to correct this problem? This issue seems to be so petty, yet Apple is unable to offer a solution? That doesn't seem right?
    Regards,
    mike_biz

Is this a file that Quicktime PRO is not able to open?
Yes. Your camera's native video format is MPEG-4 and appears to possibly be "muxed" with MP3 audio.
If not, is there anyway that I can convert this file to one that I can use on my Mac?
Try installing the free Flip4Mac component. Then try playing the .asf file in the QT Player.
Is it possible to upload from my camcorder via the included USB cable and convert directly through Quicktime PRO?
If your file plays using the Flip4Mac player component, you may then wish to consider purchasing full conversion codec which will allow you to export your DXG-305V files to any frame-to-frame synchronized QT compatible format in QTPro.
ADDED: Sorry about the duplication, too slow with my response.

  • Wireless USB Modem connection problem on MacBook Pro

I am running os x 10.8.2 on my macbook pro and am trying to connect to the internet using an alltel Wireless USB Modem (manual found here: http://pcdphones-client.s3.amazonaws.com/files/709/Alltel_English_Manual.pdf) through verizon. The USB modem works on all my PC's at home and I recently switched to a mac.
I got the software installed when I plugged the USB modem in, but i cannot get it to connect to the internet. When I open the alltel program, I cannot click the connect button and it says "no wireless WWAN device connected" and "no wireless networks defined. To define a network, click on Networks in the Preferences". I've been in the networks tab, but don't really understand how to get it to connect.

When you contacted aaltel what did they have to say?

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.

Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

    Hello there,
my girl-friend used her C7-00 as a wifi-tethering device until recently when she got her new computer that came with  Windows 8.1.
Because 8.1 does not support WEP-Hotspot, I decided to hook up the phone using USB-cable and Nokia Suite.  The connection goes alright, and she can surf through her C7 for a while, but then after 2 minutes approximately Nokia Suite says the connection has been dropped. This happens every time.  Internet works perfectly on the phone.
Tried solutions: restarting phone, updating software, switching USB-modem mode, checking access-point configuration in Nokia Suite
Can anyone offer a suggestion on how to make this work ?  Otherwise we will have to buy a new smartphone :-(.

    Hi, sennerin.
Welcome to Nokia Support Discussions Forum!
Regarding your concern, Nokia Suite is not compatible with PC which runs Windows 8.1 OS. You can check the compatible Operating System of PC for Nokia Suite here: Nokia Suite. That is the reason why the connection is not that stable when using the phone as an internet modem.

oh i already did that. Im working on my imac and looking into this on my macbook. Was able to reproduce the issue again by trying to open TM. Locked out the finder again and had to restart. I checked the serial number and it was an early 2009 purchase with no coverage.
If you bought a Mac and got AppleCare with it, within 2 years of buying the TC, the TC is covered, too.
I have to admit that this $500 unit was the first to apparently junk out. The western digital that had my main data on that is my daily external that I store about 2TB of data on is still perfect and the new technology TM appears to already be cashed. Love the computers, not to big of a fan on the externals of the apple TV's. No life expectancy. Neither here nor there.
suggestions before I either get this looked at or scrap the HD on it and move forward.?
Reset the TC. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If all else fails, take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location, they may be able to determine whether the disk is dead.
If it is, they might replace the TC for you. If not, they won't repair it, but if the electronics are ok, you can replace the HD yourself, if you want to. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542983

  • Problems with Vodafone/Huawei E220 wireless usb Modem

    Hi there,
My faithful Powerbook is having issues with a company issued Vodafone Vodem (Huawei E220 wireless HSDPA 3G USB modem).
It worked well at first, but then after restarting, waking from sleep or rebooting from off, the Vodem would cease to connect to Vodafone, with the Vodafone Modem Software giving me a cryptic message "No modem or data card attached".
Yesterday, I tried reinstalling and uninstalling the software, and after several installation/uninstallations, it finally reconnected. It has since stopped working again since shutting down the Powerbook overnight. Reinstalling has not yet worked.
I read somewhere on the net that leaving the modem plugged in for a minute before attempting to connect might work - alas no such luck.
Has anyone else out there had problems with their Vodafone/Huawei E220 USB wireless modem, and how did you resolve the problem?
I have tried both the New Zealand 2.07 version, plus the European 2.08 version of the Vodafone connectivity software.
    I am running a Powerbook 15", 1.67ghz, MacOS 10.4.11, 512MB, no other peripherals connected.

No experience, but what happens if you log out then back in?
Does a New User have that problem?

  • How can I use 2 3g usb modems to increase internet speed (connection bonding)?

I live in Bolivia, which if you don't know has the worst internet on planet earth.. i.e. poorest reliability, availability, speed, most expensive, etc..
I currently have a couple of 4g usb modems (which have speeds way slower than 3g.. we're talking 1-200 kbs = ( )... I'm thinking I can probably bond them, or do somekind of proxy thing so that I can browse the web across both of the dongles.. I know that will not equal 2 times the speed.. but anything would help..
Hoping someone here has some ideas.
The modems are both HUWEI and I can connect them via the network preferences pane.
I know this is possible on ubuntu, but I don't really want to set up a linux server virtual or otherwise if I can avoid it.
    Many thanks,
    George

  • Can I share my internet connection via wifi AND use my wireless printer at the same time?

Not completely familiar with  wifi capabilities. I have this new setup in my office. I want to share my iMac internet connection via wifi so I can text and check emails using my iPhone (no cell service inside the building). Which works fine. However, I now cannot print wirelessly to my HP printer (LaserJet Pro 400 color). Once Internet sharing is off, I can print just fine. Any other wireless options, or just go get a long USB cable?

    Hi,
It is not a multitasking printer, other devices may keep it therefore the best option in this case: connect it to your wireless router and all devices which are conntected to this router can sahre the printer.
    Regards.

  • Does Time Capsule able to work with a Wireless USB Modem (3G-HSUPA/HSDPA...

Not everyone can enjoy an efficient Landline provider. Apple advertizes that the future is wireless but still, I can not find any Mac product which take the more and more growing wireless mobile web connection... still stick to Wi-Fi and bluetooth. It would be great if Time Capsule could have a USB port dedicated to USB wireless modem (3G -HSUPA, HSDPA...) for web connections instead of only DSL. Any idea if possible?

There are products which do work as 3G routers to which you could plug in the Time Capsule via ethernet.

  • Bigpond Wireless Broadband USB Modem not connecting in new Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I have recently bought one of the latest Macbook Pros and used Migration Assistant to transfer data from my older Macbook. On the older laptop I used a Tesltra Bigpond 7.2 Wireless USB Modem and it connected and worked fine (using default settings and the telstra connection software), however after plugging it into the newer laptop it has been behaving srangely.
Initially it worked fine for about a day, then kept stating that 'The PPP serever could not be found' - I changed the network settings a bit, uninstalled and redownloaded the software and registered the computer. It worked again for about a day then stopped connecting again. Again, the software manager was uninstalled and reinstalled and again it worked for about a day; however it has stopped working completely now and refuses to even be found by the computer. To make it more complicating, it isnt the modem because it works fine in the old computer still!
I have a feeling it may have sonething to do with the APN address but I'm not 100% sure.
Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated!! Thankyou in advance

Yes you are right it works fine outside your mac notebook. But it is incompatible once installed inside the system.
Simple do a google search for "WD blue series drives in mac notebooks" and see what comes up.
I am not lying to you about the problems. You have first hand knowledge that with some mac notebooks the WD blue drives don't work.

WD blue is compatible according to the manufacturer's specifications.

    Hi,
Listed below is the step by step intructions to configure the Nokia device as a modem to a mac.
    Steps:
Connecting your Mac to the internet is convenient and easy with your a compatible Nokia S60 device. You'll need a Nokia S60 device that supports a 2G or 3G data connection (such as GPRS or HSDPA), a compatible Mac (with the latest OS X), a USB cable for your Nokia device or a Bluetooth-enabled Mac, and a network subscription with your mobile service provider.
To set up your device you'll need to know your operator's Access Point Name (APN) and have the packet data service enabled. For help with this please contact your operator.
In Settings select and open Connection >Select and open Packet data > Select and open Access point >Type in your operator's Access Point Name
Exit Settings. Your device is now ready to be used as a modem for your Mac!
Bluetooth Connection: Pairing between Mac and Device using bluetooth, follow the instruction from here: http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-as-a-modem/connect-to-your...
Note: Preferred mode is USB as it much faster than Bluetooth.
Connect the device and then go to System preferences- >Network- >Select Device (Nokia XXX)
Click on Advanced Tab > Modem tab
    - Vendor : Nokia
    -Model:GPRS (GSM/3G)
-Telephone Number: *99***1# (contact your operator to get this settings)
-APN: airtelgprs.com (contact your operator to get this settings)
    CID: 1
Once connected it will be highlighted in green.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Cheers
    Sandy
