Will a dual 867mhz cpu from a MDD fit in a QS or DA?

Hello all,
Noticing that the dual 867mhz cpu from a Mirror Drive Door Mac runs at 133mhz (rather than 167mhz) prompts me to wonder if it would work in a Quicksilver or Digital Audio Mac? The MDD takes different memory; is that a problem? It looks different; would it even fit?
TIA ..... Jon

No, physically and electrically ( power and data ) incompatible.

    MDD Dual 867MHz CPU Overheating
I have noted the large number of problems with this particular model and heat issues, but I just received this stripped MDD to do an upgrade on the cheap for my B&W G3 server. In hindsight this might not have been the best unit to upgrade with, but for $72 on ebay (seller was unsure it was dual processor--which may have helped lack of bidding), I figured it was worth it.
After putting RAM to 2GB, putting in an ATI 9200 PCI graphics card, and inserting my HDs from the B&W with updated Tiger installed, everything booted fine with no problems. Dual processors checked out, RAM was fine, and all drives loaded without glitch.
Next go round, after 20-30 minutes it does the sleep/freeze thing everyone has mentioned here and elsewhere. All fans work and have tested with door open and high speed fan directly over heat sink and it still shuts down. Temperature Monitor has it rising above 80c and climbing, which I no longer let go until "closing" to avoid any more damage.
The weird thing about this is that during all of this, the aluminum heat sink remains relatively cool, as if it is not making any contact.
Is it possible it just needs a pad or compound to make contact and dissipate the heat through the sink etc., or does this sound like either a faulty sensor or failing CPU? The compound would be an easy fix (and it sounds logical), but I may just be missing the obvious here. My hope is that the prior owner just did not bother to find out why it did this and cannibalized the unit.
I could take out all the drives, etc. to reduce the heat build up, but I want this to function as a feasible house server that can be left on most of the time + because of the cool heat sink the behavior does not seem to relate to the heat in the housing.
Any and all help will be most welcome.

I think you've nailed it there. Definitely sounds like a poor contact between the CPU and the heat sink.
The sinks do get quite warm, and the CPU seems to low about 52 C, average 59.5 C when busy and top out at 62 C.
It's a great machine, so if you can lay your hands on some thermite glue and effect the repair, you'll be on to a winner. $72, you lucky so-and-so.

  • Will a dual core cpu fit im my Satellite 2410-504

HI Im thinking of upgrading my cpu to dual core I have a Satellite S2410-504 socket 478 mPGA , im want to put a Intel core duo sl9bn inside. Will this work?
    any help please

A Core Duo would be a bit faster but wont make a huge difference.
I had a look at the online brochures, it looks like you can install a 2.2GHz Pentium 4 in that model, which should make a noticeable difference in speed.
There is no way a Core Duo will work with the Chipset in the 2410. There is too much of a generation gap. The Pentium M came out after the P4, which I doubt would work either.
When a new CPU comes out, it is released alongside a new Chipset chip. The new Chipset supports new features of the CPU, along with power management changes, and the update to DDR2.
Basically, if you want to use a Core Duo CPU, you need a mainboard with something like an i965 chipset (Northbridge) that has support for the Core Duo architecture. You cannot upgrade the chipset on a mainboard.

  • Will a 400 MHz CPU from a E250 run in a E450

    Hello all
    Will a 501-5445 400MHz UltraSparc II from a E250 run in a E450? The 400Mhz UltraSparc II Module for the E450 has a differend Part number 501-5446.
The 250MHz and 300MHz modules are interchangeble between the E250 and the E450.
    Thanks

the two cpus are different enough to not be
interchangeable... is your E450 motherboard able to
handle 450mhz ? it depends of the mohterboard.
you can try it, I have, and it doesn't work.
    haroldkarlHello all
Please help me here why dit you aks if the motherboard is abel to handle 450MHz? To the best of my knowleg the E450 suports 250 300 400 and 480MHz.

  • Selling dual 867 CPU- what's a fair price?

    Hey everyone,
I'm looking to put my dual 867 CPU w/heatsink for sale on eBay- what do you think is a fair price? I've had NO issues with it. I just upgraded to a dual 1.6 that's why I'm selling it. Thanks!

A recent G4 Dual 867MHz CPU Board sold for $71.00 plus $13.05 shipping. Another one sold for $76.00 plus $13.05, and another sold for $69.99 plus $14.00 shipping. But one dual 867MHz G4 was listed for $89.99 plus $14.00 did not get any bids. But next week these could sell for higher or less. eBay is kinda tough to pin down values but If it were mine I would put a $75 reserve on it at least.

  • Will a Built-in Modem pulled from a Dual 867mhz work in my DP 500 Mhz  Mac

Will a Built-in Modem pulled from a Dual 867mhz work in my DP 500 Mhz (Gigabyte Etherent) Mac?
The info on the modem is:
    UO1MO85.00
The connectors are compatible, but I wasn't sure if the modem itself was.
I'm looking to start faxing with my computer which is why I need a modem.
    thanks,
    Hairfarmer

    Hi
Unfortunately I think they may be right. For my internal modem the Apple System Profiler lists a number of regions including the UK. This seems to imply they're region specific and a modem from the US is unlikely to work. I expect the actual hardware is the same, but the firmware contained in the ROM on the modem card is different.
Apple sell an external USB modem for around £35 on the UK on-line Apple Store. It's primarily intended for Mac Minis which no longer ship with an internal modem, although it may work on other computers with the appropriate OS version number.

  • Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver: Near Perfect Installation

I installed the family pack on both my desktop G4 towers (Dual 867mhz MDD G4 & Dual 1Ghz G4 Quicksilver) and had almost ZERO problems.
I opted to upgrade my OS X 10.4.10 systems.
Both installations (upgrades) were without a problem, except for one minor keychain glitch:
MDD Dual 867mhz G4: After installation and restart, the keychain seemed to have forgotten my passwords for my POP email and my iChat (AIM) accounts. I simply cleared the keychain (as prompted) and re-entered the passwords (opted to save them) and all is well.
Quicksilver Dual 1ghz G4: No keychain issue. Passwords were retained just fine.
Every piece of email, settings, music, files, folders, apps, etc were all retained just fine on both computers.
All my Adobe CS2 suite apps, MS Apps are just fine.....as does my Final Cut Pro software.
The only software that "broke" was GOOGLE EARTH. I simply just downloaded the latest version and all is well again.
    Approx. Install time: 1hr.
Note: If your computer stalls on a blue screen (my computers did this on TIGER install), let them go. More than likely it's "finishing" the installation and probably cataloging the hard drive for Spotlight.
This Leopard OS Rocks! I can't wait til they fine tune it with a 10.5.1 update release

    I put Leopard on a Dual 800 and a Dual 400.
Leopard pushes the limits of the 400. The 800 runs pretty well.
I mean it is slower in some places, but I assume that will be fixed in updates.
(for instance... my cursor is sticking to links in firefox and it kills my CPU usage)
    Everything else works great.

  • Dual 867MHz Is now Dual 800MHz After Motherboard Replacement?

so i replaced the motherboard on my dual 867MHz G4.
the computer turns on now, and i did a fresh 10.4.11 install...but i noticed that it says "Dual 800" instead of "Dual 867" in my "About This Mac" now. i typed "sysctl hw.cpufrequency" in the terminal and discovered that it is actually running at 800MHz, and not 867MHz.
so why did i lose 67MHz with a new motherboard? it was the correct motherboard...any ideas?

G4 MDD Processor and bus speeds
There are two classes of Processors for the Mirrored Drive Doors G4 Macs, and they do not follow the main distinction between the products -- Firewire 400 Vs. Firewire 800.
In the Mirrored Drive Doors models, processor speed is determined by a combination of the jumpers on the processor modules and the Bus Speed of the system into which the processor is installed.
    • Install a processor intended for a faster Bus speed into a system with a slower Bus speed, and it will be clocked slower and run slower than expected. 133/167 slower.
    • Install a processor intended for a slower bus speed into a system with a faster Bus speed, and it will be clocked faster -- in most cases so fast that it will immediately crash.
    133 MHz Bus speed:
867 MHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.0 GHz single w 1 MB cache from Fw 800 model
    167 MHz Bus speed:
1.0 GHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.25 GHz dual w 2 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 400 model
1.25 GHz dual w 1 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 800 model
1.42 GHz dual w 2 MB cache (each processor) from Fw 800 model
1.25 GHz single w 1 MB cache from "education only" 2003 model

  • Dual boot Windows from Toshiba Recovery CD

Is it possible to dual boot Windows from a Toshiba Recovery CD?
I have a Satellite A45-S120 with a Toshiba Windows XP Recovery CD.
I have XP installed on one partition.  I partitioned the hard drive using GParted, and installed Linux on several partitions.  I want to install XP on a 2nd partition, so I can dual boot 2 versions of Windows from the same hard drive.
When I go to install Windows, the Toshiba Recovery CD says the entire hard drive will be deleted.  Is this the case, or will it only reformat a partition?  I went into GParted and was able to change the first Windows XP ntfs partition to hidden, and now successfully can not boot Windows from the Grub Boot Manager.  However, I worry that if GParted can see the partition, then the Toshiba Recovery CD might be able to.  In addition, the Linux ext partitions could not be set to hidden.  Will the Toshiba Recovery CD overwrite all the partitions, or can it maybe only install itself on the one ntfs partition available?
I read at http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/193560-install-xp-toshiba-recovery-disk-d.html that there may be a way possible, any advice?
    Specs are:
    1.26 Ghz Celeron
    1.256 GB Ram
    40 GB HD

    Satellite A45-S120
I want to install XP on a 2nd partition,
So far as I know, that recovery disc will install nothing. It will restore the entire hard drive (master boot record and all) by writing all the bytes that were on the original drive (byte-by-byte).

  • Installing Dual 500mhz Processor from G4

I have a B&W G3 that currently has a 400mhz processor. I just salvaged a Dual 500mhz processor from a dying Powermac G4. How can I replace the processor? Will it work? thanks.

That dual G4 processor uses the 300-pin rectangular connector. The processor board is much larger, and is installed with three or four screws over as many posts on the motherboard.
The Blue & White G3 processors, like the beige G3 before them, and the very first "PCI-graphics" G4, use a 305-pin nearly square pin grid array inserted into a ZIF socket.
They are not compatible, and the signals have been changed -- there are no adapters.

  • Remove CPU  from a RAC Server

    Hi,
Can any one please confirm, Does any impact on when we remove a CPU from a rac database server.
    Does it affect Database ?

    No hardware platform
    No operating system
    No version number
No indication of the number of servers or their configuration
My temptation is to say I won't answer until you provide even the most modest amount of real information
So, in this specific case, I will say that I have done it without consequence but strongly advise you to post sufficient relevant information that you can get a more specific answer.
As to whether it has an impact on the database the answer is clearly no. As to whether it will have an impact on the instance, and your users, depends upon your current CPU utilization something else you didn't think important enough to mention.

  • Possible to put g5 or dual g4 processor in my MDD?

Hey, I have a bunch of G4 MDD powermacs that I got, all with dead powersupplies. I have gotten them running with modified ATX power supplies, but things seem a little sluggish. Each of these macs have the single 1.0 GHz processor, and I was wondering if it is possible swap out the processor for a better one, such as a dual processor G4, or even a G5 processor.
    Is it doable?

Processors from faster MDDs would also work.
The faster MDDs have a higher bus speed, so the jumpers on the transplanted CPUs would need to be changed. Instructions are here.
If the jumpers are not changed, the CPUs would run at about 4/5 of their rated speed.

  • What's the best way to transfer files from dead MDD G4 PowerMac to new iMac desktop?

My Mirrored Drive Door 1 ghz G4 Power Mac recently stopped powering on. I have just purchased a new iMac with 2.5 ghz intel core i5. What is the best way for me to transfer the files to the new machine?
Someone on another thread recommended buying a converter cable like this one: http://www.newertech.com/products/usb2_adaptv2.php
Will I need to use transfer software too? I'd like to bring my playlists along to the new machine but don't need any of the software.
    Thanks!

That will work. You could also remove the hard drive from the MDD and put it in an external enclosure so you would have it for backup.
You can use the utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, to transfer files - MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.

  • ENVY 15t-1100 CTO (NX346AV) Dual core CPU upgrade?

    Hello Experts,
I have the Laptop noted above (15t-1100 CTO) and I would like to replace the quad core i7-i820QM CPU (its a Clarksfield variant of Nehalem - Socket G1) with a faster (more power efficient) Dual Core CPU.  I purchased a i7 620M (more power efficient dual core also on Socket G1) and when installed in the laptop, it POSTS, but Windows will always crash 1/2 way through the boot, reguardless if I'm on the original install of the Windows 7 OS, or trying to boot a Windows 7/8 Install CD (via USB).  I feel that the board lacks support for this CPU (any of the dual core CPUs really), but I cannot find confirmation anywhere.  Also note, I had to remove 2 of the 4 ram sticks to even get this far (leaving a single ram stick on each channel.. I'm assuming partly due to the dual core supporting only 2 memory chanels.
