Window 8.1 Merging Files with from Folders With Same Name Together

I notice folders with the same exact name in the same location will merge together all the files into one folder without any notice to change the name. Is there some way to change this setting?

If set to show folder-merge conflicts, you should get a conflict-warning dialog.
Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab
Clear the check box below.

Files removed from folders, added into a "new folder with items"

Just found files missing from document folders in multiple places, all appear to have been moved to a single folder called "new folder with items" under my user folder. Folder structure all in tact - just files all (or rather nearly all) moved.
I'm restoring from back up now but ***?! had this mac for a year with no issues until now. No major tinkering done on the mac to have caused such a dramatic issue.

If the directory name were random (most likely not even readable), that would mean the file system is corrupted and in need to be repaired ASAP, but as the name is in plain english it seems it was assigned programmatically.
As most Unix derivatives, Mac OS X has a program called fsck.
Each time a disk is "mounted" fsck checks if the file system is in a consistent state. If "dangling" files are found, they are collected in a special directory called "lost+found".
Apple could have changed fsck to create a directory "new folder with items" instead of "lost+found", but I think this is unlikely.
Perhaps someone more familiar with fsck could confirm, but in the meantime I would not rule out other theories.
P.S.
The files could still have been selected from the "All my files" category on the sidebar which looks like "flat" directory as far as the finder is concerned.

I would just save a copy of the local site folder and the .ste on a thumb drive and copy them over to the new machine.
You don't have to export it directly onto the thumb/flash drive or anything. Actually, you don't "need" the .ste at all.
The only reason to make the .ste file is to transfer over your site-specific settings (like FTP credentials) without having to re-type/re-select everything, it doesn't copy any actual site files over.
Once the site files are copied over, you can just go to Site > New to set up the new site. Rather than going to a new blank folder, you would set the Local Root Directory to the newly copied site folder.

HELP..accidently replaced full file with old one of same name.

I think i really screwed up!
Last night I was organizing my computer files and folders for work. I transferred many files over from my old powerbook and had many duplicate files. I was moving pretty fast dragging and dropping, cut and pasting, creating new folders.
Then I moved a file over to another one that had the same name. The box came up asking if "I would like to replace the contents... I said yes!
Then in horror I realized the new folder had nothing in it and I had replaced it for the old file which was full of design ads, quotes, logos, menus, wine lists, ETC all for work.
Where did all the contents of the old file go? I can not find it anywhere. Did it seriously delete the entire contents and not even put it in the trash?
PLEASE HELP> I am in big trouble here.

Short answer: it sounds like the file is gone for good.
Unless... do you have Time Machine enabled (or some other backup)?

LabVIEW 2010 App Builder: Registry editor has issue with keys of the same name at the same level in registry tree

This is a bug report for an NI application engineer. Please file a CAR.
In a LabVIEW 2010 project, create a new installer build and go to the Registry editor.
Enter some keys like the following
Click OK to close the installer wizard.
Now reopen the build specification and go to the Registry editor. The registry editor comes up blank and non functional.
I believe the registry entries are still written when the installer executes, but you cannot edit the registry any further in LabVIEW 2010. This was not an issue in LV 2009. The issue seems to stem from having two keys with the same name at the same level in the registry tree (in this case, the two "Test" keys).

IPod app -- shuffle puts songs with same name together . . .

I created a playlist today for my whole library on my iPhone 4 with the iPod app, and it put all the songs that are the same together. For example, I have some concerts live in Paris, and other concerts live in San Francisco, and the regular albumn that was recorded in a studio -- all the songs have the same name, but each version is a little different. I dont' want them back-to back -- that is why I tried to "shuffle". How do I avoid this from happening so that I don't have to keep skipping the songs I don't want to hear again?

Where are you seeing them as being grouped together ? If I do a search for 'Starseed' here in the UK iTunes store then I find three different groups listed on the right-hand side of the search results screen - the groups being classified as 'rock', 'new age', 'electronic'. I can then click on one of them to see that group's releases.

Why jpeg file exported from Aperture with 300 dpi's it opens with 72 dpi's on PS ( image size)? I've tried several combinations and all give different results. And I am confused on what is the best workflow for me.

My workflow is
RAW > Aperture Library > export jpeg high resolution 300 dpi's > one file on PS > edit > Save us jpeg. The I realised that files from PS were being save in a smaller size from the ones exported form Aperture. That is when I went o see <image size> on PS and files were with 72.
Since ten I've trying different things
1. Aperture > export as PSD > open on PS > edit > Save us jpeg = small file (around 15 MB)
2. Aperture > export as jpeg high resolution 300 dpi's > open on PS > CHANGE dpi's to 300 on <image size> edit > Save us jpeg = big file (Huge, actually)
What am I doing wrong? Would someone give me guidance and tell me what is the best workflow, considering I edit photos to deliver to my clients and I shall give them 300 dpi's.

Which product do I purchase???? - Creating a merged PDF report from excel with cover page

Hi Guys,
I work in the BI field and have created a pdf document using PDFCreator and another third part scripting tool called jpdfbookmarks.
We have delivered something to the client but the quality of the output ( not the best) and the time it takes to cycle through each page ( when being viewed) within the merged
pdf document takes a little time...
So my boss as asked me to explore something within the Adobe suite of products BUT.... i have no idea which one i should choose.
My requirements are as follows:
To deliever this report to the client the program needs to be able to do the following:
1) convert excel files to pdf
2) take these individually created converted excel to pdf converted files and and merge them into 1 document
3) within this merged document have the abilty to be able to bookmark each page
4) have a cover page with hyperlinks
5) and finally but most important of all to be able perform steps 1 to 4 above programatically through scripting language vb script / vba
nice to haves:
6) abilty to email each merged doc to list of email address
7) abilty to edit document to add in hyperlinks etc
Need to get an understanding of costs ie
1) how much per licence
2) what product with have all the features above and how much
Can anyone please be kind enough to point me in the right direction as to what product would be best suited?? Being able
to scipt a solution together is key.

You can do everything except the cover page with Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Pro). There are demos on our website that you can install and try out. You will need the SDK documentation and sample code to learn how to automate/program.

Help needed in file tx from MBP with blacked out screen to ext. HDD

just got off the phone with Apple .... seems like I might have a cursed NVIDIA graphics card in my Macbook Pro 2007 model (2.4GHz core2duo)
had basically kept my MBP ('07 model) in sleep mode when I went to office. When i came back, the white light in the front wasn't pulsing anymore and it was replaced by a bright constant white light - proceeded to open the lid... and the screen was totally dark ... tried a few key combinations in random to get it up and running but to no avail .. then checked a few forums on this issue... seems like lots of ppl have the issue but a lot of them also managed to get the screen back on by resetting the SMC and PRAM (which I proceeded to try) ... unfortunately hasn't worked for me despite multipe resets of the SMC and PRAM. Gave Apple a call and all things point to the graphics card having conked out ... this ***** big time!! ...
The worst thing is that after switching on my machine, I can still load software by doing the keyboard shortcut for spotlight and typing the application ... e.g. itunes is working and I'm still managing to play songs through myh machine.. only issue is that the display is totally dark...
Now.. my big issue before I send it across to the service centre is backing up my "Downloads" folder....
Can someone help me with how I can go about doing this through terminal ? I think I just might be able to pull it off with the keyboard if I get sufficient and specific help!!!!
basically I'm looking for transfer of all contents from "Downloads" folder to an external hard disk with the name "Active" ...
help would be greatly appreciated!
Any suggestions on methods of backing up my data would be great!!...
Also, are there any precautions I should be taking/ things I ought to be wary of when sending my machine in to an authorized service centre?

Does your hard drive spin up? And do you have access to another MAC?
If so, you could see if you could mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop using FireWire Target Disk mode:

Also mount an external drive equal or larger than your internal drive on the host Mac. Then use a cloning utility like Super Duper on the host Mac to clone your internal drive onto the external drive. This will give you a backup of everything that is on your internal drive--it will be an exact copy. This would take some time, but would likely be the best way to back up everything on your drive.

It is especially important to back up everything on your drive, because when your Mac goes in for repair, sometimes the drive is erased and the OS reinstalled in the process of troubleshooting. Also, they will likely elect to thoroughly test the machine and do any repairs that are necessary, which could possibly include replacing the hard drive. If you have any sensitive data on the drive, you may even want to erase it before sending it in just on general principles.

HT3209 First movie that I've had an issue with from ITunes with HDCP!

Downloaded the new OS and now my movies seem to be unplayable??? Don't think its just me based on the HDCP is @%*& threads lol But I just downloaded the new Skyfall HD movie and can't get it to play on my AMD HD6770 HDCP capable HDMI cabled video card!

How to display the variable screen with report in the same page together

our customers want to design a web application use BEx
they want the variable screen can be displayed with the report result in the same web page together
so they can modify the variable filters any time and refresh the report with new variable filter
i have tried the navigation area,but it seems only use new filter to the data athough get,we can't change the filter we input in the variable screen.
is there any way to display these together?
even I can use BSP.

I think to display var screen with the report is not possible.(At least it will not be static). You need to refresh the report and choose the varibale at that time.
Other option could be to bring all the possible value in the report and provide your user with the filter value. But this will make your report slow as you may have to bring more data in the filter.

Is there a way to create a file merge that updates from the original source file if changes are made?

I have thousands of PDF documents that are merged with other files. I'll give an example so it's easier to understand.
File #1 may be merged (or in a portfolio) with Files #2 and #3 but also in another merge (or portfolio) with Files #3 and #4.
If I update File #1, is there a way for it to automatically update both of the merge or portfolio files with the updated File #1? (File#1 would be replaced, same name and location).

You would need to add favorites to the WebHelp output prior to creating a CHM. You would need something along the lines of: http://www.wvanweelden.eu/product/favorites-widget-webhelp
But since it's in a CHM, I'm not sure whether you will be able to save anything from the webhelp output between sessions.

How to get the long file name from an 8.3 name in Windows.

Because of a legacy string limitation, I have a list of files in 8.3 format. The actual files are saved with long names. How can I get the long name from the short name?
In JavaScript, I would get a file system object and get the file object from there with the short name. Then it's no problem to get the full name. But I don't see anything in Java that matches that. ???

Here is what I did.
String displayName = "somefi~1.txt";
File fO = new File("c:\\"); // I have a more involved path but that's not important here.
String stPath = fO.getPath() + displayName;
File fD = new File(stPath); // get the file using the short name.
File fDc = new File(fD.getCanonicalPath()); // get another file using the cononical name
String FulldisplayName = fDc.getName(); // get the long name from there.
It's roundabout but it works. Since getName() on the file read with the short name only returns the name used to get the file, I open it twice. The alternative is to parse the cononical name for the file name but that's clumbsy too.

With older BW versions it was possible to fill a variable with lists.

Ever since the last update I can't seem to open up the list of ''Recently Closed Windows'', is there anybody that can help me with that?

Yesterday my Firefox browser was updated without me even noticing it. I closed the only 2 windows that were open, both having a bunch of tabs, because I turned off my PC. Today I opened up Firefox, clicked ''Restore previous session'' which opened up one of these 2 windows. But when I wanted to access the list of ''Recently Closed Windows'' it didn't open. It only shows a small square as if it's there, but it doesn't show anything. I can open up ''Recently Closed Tabs'' but that doesn't help me. I now only have 1 window, but the other one had some important tabs opened in it as well, so I could really use some help.

Sorry to hear about this problem and for the delay in getting back to you.
Firefox stores your open windows and tabs in a file named sessionstore.js in your currently active settings folder. Could you check that folder and back up all of the sessionstore files as the first step.
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
If you find a file named sessionstore but not sessionstore.js, Windows may be hiding file extensions from you. To work with files as accurately as possible, I suggest unhiding them. This Microsoft support article has the steps: [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/865219].
