Window in a window

how do get a window in a window? an example of what i'm talking about:
if you type sysedit in RUN you'll see one window appear and within it are several
cascaded windows. I'm wondering how (codewise) you can go about doing that.

JFrame jf[] = new JFrame[5];
for (int x = 0; x < 5; x++) {
     jf[x] = new JFrame("Frame "+x);
     jf[x].setSize(500, 300);
     jf[x].setLocation(50*x, 50*x);
     jf[x].show();

  • Windows Contacts and Windows 8?

    This is a question for people on the operating system team: What is the role of the Contacts Folder in Windows 8?  Do the Contacts sync with the metro People app, Windows Live Mail, or Windows Messenger?  If not, is it pretty much an abandoned
    feature?

    Hi,
    In Windows Live Mail, it will sync Windows Live Messenger contact and Windows Contacts. Regarding People app, it just sync Windows Live Messenger contacts default, it won't sync Windows Contacts on local computer.
    The role of the Contacts folder is same in Windows 7

  • Windows Vista and Windows 8

    I have a Windows Vista Full Installer disc and a Windows 7 Upgrade Disc. I am currently running a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro 13" with Mountain Lion, Boot Camp Version 5.
    Can I install Windows Vista through Boot Camp, then upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8 when it's released?
    Thanks.

    Vista is not supported with Mountain Lion. You could try installing Windows 7 over itself. Some have reported success doing this.

  • Windows 7 and windows 8 desktop wired and 7510e printer connected to win 7 wireless

    I have a windows 7 64 bit HPavilion Elite 150f desktop set up wired with a 7510e photosmart printer connected to it wireless, now I  have purchased a windows 8 desktop HP envy 700-019 desktop.
    When I set up my new windows 8 desktop I  just plugged it into my wireless router/modem combo and it found my printer and I could just print from it, I did not download any software or drivers for my printer or set up a home group as I was not sure how to set it up but last night I tried to set up a homegroup,
    I used my wireless network key and entered it and pressed connect, then I entered the Homegroup password that was downloaded for me from Microsoft, but my windows 7 says homegroup and my windows 8 shows private network so I am not sure what I have done wrong, I chose to only share music and printers, can anyone tell me how to do this correctly as I am not sure that I have done it properly.
    On my windows 8 I can go to my printers web site by entering the static IP address that cloud support set up for me and it shows as connected but I do not want to enter any printer code as that is already set up on my windows 7, I can also scan to email on my windows 8 but I am not sure what if any security I have on my windows 8. The last time I had a homegroup set up I payed someone to do it for me so I did it by guess work more than anything, if someone can lead me through it step by step I would appreciate it.

    Hi @emma22
    I would like to do my best to help, but please bear in mind the issue you are expressing is an inquiry for Microsoft not HP. I did find something I think will be most helpful, and I hope it resolves the issue, but if the issue persists, or you have additional questions, it might be best to reach out to the Microsoft community.
    Here is what I found; HomeGroup from start to finish.
    In the top right hand corner of the article, you can change it from WIndows 7 to Windows 8. I hope this helps.

  • Windows 7 and Windows 8 in the same computer

    I have HP Pavilion HDX9300 with two hard discs. I have installed Windows 7 in och of them and Windows 8 in the other. Both W7 and W8 works when the disc is placed in one of the discplaces but not in the other.
    If I want to change from W7 to W8 I thus have to change place for the hard disc. My desire is to change from W7 to W8 without changing places for the harddiscs. Is it possible? If so, how do I do?

    I believe the second hard drive bay in the HDX9300 is not bootable. You need to load Windows 8 on the same hard drive as Windows 7 as a dual boot.
    http://www.extremetech.com/computing/143380-how-to-dual-boot-windows-8-and-windows-7
    You could then use the second drive as storage accessible to both operating systems.

  • How to downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7

    I recently purchased a T430 with Windows 8 loaded. After I played with Windows 8 for a few days, I regretted that I had not ordered the Win7 version. I have a Windows 7 Proression edition CD, so without too much research, I thought I could just easily install the Windows 7 over Windows 8 and be done. What a fool I was! And let me share my failure experience so no same mistake would be made by others who wanted to do the same:
    First, I tried to put in a Windows 7 CD and run installation from the CD; sure, it failed quickly.
    So, I went into the BIOS and changed the Startup setting "UEFI boot" only to "Legacy boot" so it will force the machine to boot from my Windows 7 CD. That little bit of advanced setting was taking me to death row a bit faster, as matter of fact. Read on...
    Restarted the machine and now I was able to launch the Windows 7 installation screen. I was too excited and moved along to the point it asked if I wanted to delete the partition. In the past, when I reinstalled OS, I always said yes to delete the old partition and created a new partition. But man, I was so ignorant of new technology! Windows 8 is no longer NTFS. It is on GPT (Guid Partition Table) format now. But somehow, it did allow me to delete the main partition where Windows 8 was installed. No error message or warning message that seemed critical popup, the partition just went into a limbo.
    All hell broke loose from then on. Windows 7 could not install on GPT partition and I could not go back to Windows 8 now that its home base (GPT partition ) was damaged by Windows 7.
    After some Google search and serious read, I found postings suggesting downloading a GPARTED iso image, burned that to CD and run it from CD drive to re-partition the damaged GPT on my machine. I did all that, had the CD created, put it in the drive and waited for the magic....but No way, it did not work - it simply sit there and NOT bootable. I could go into to command line and tried to run every possible .exe or .bat file in the disk, but no thing worked.
    So the miser goes on. I had tried to call Lenovo tech support at 1-800-426-7378 and guess what I ended up? - a series of busy dial-tones...
    Community forum, my last resort! Hereos please come forward and help!!! Just don't tell me to download the GPARTED, burn it to CD or USB and boot from there....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Bill, I really appreciated that you pointed me to the DiskPart utility that is part of DOS. With that, I have successfully overcome the biggest hurdle - re-partition my disk to NTFS format. Here I recorded the steps I went through:
    Powered up T430 and let the Diagnostic tool run "Preparing Automatic Repair"
    On screen showing "Diagnose your PC" then "Attempt to repair your PC"
    Automatic Repair failed, then two options button showed "Shutdown" and "Advanced options"; selected the "Advanced options" button
    Selected "Troubleshoot", then "Advanced Options"
    Clicked on "Command Prompt" on Advanced Options screen
    Now we are in command prompt: c:\>; typed "diskpart /?" to list a possible commands
    Followed the instruction on http://www.computerhope.com/diskpart.htm to get the proper command switch
    At C:\> typed "diskpart" to enter DISKPART command mode; then type ? to list all the switches, such as GPT, Help, etc
    Diskpart>format fs=NTFS Label="86DB-AC90"
    Did not format; message returned
    There is no volume selected.
    Please select a volume and try again
    As matter of fact, the problem was that I had not selected a disk; after reading this post at http://www.jwgoerlich.us/blogengine/post/2009/11/05/Use- Diskpart-to-Create-and-Format-Partitions.aspx, I did a "list disk" command at DISKPART>, and that got me a list of disk online.
    Then I did a select disk command: DISKPART>select Disk 0; it returned message "Disk 0 is now the selected disk"
    I ran "clean" command again; this time, message returned, "DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk"
    Diskpart>format fs=NTFS quick; still got the "There is no volume selected"
    Tried DISKPART>convert mbr
    DiskPart successfully converted the selected disk to MBR format
    DISKPART>create partition primary
    output: DiskPart succeeded in creating the specific partition
    DISKPART>select part 1
    output: Partition 1 is now the selected partition
    DISKPART>format fs=NTFS label=YangT430 quick
    Put in Windows 7 32-bit CD and installation now just sailed through.

  • Problem dual booting Windows 8 and windows 7 G480

    I bought new laptop g480 and it comes with windows 8  single language and I want to dual boot it with windows 7 Ultimate. So I create one partition 50 Gig using Minitool Partition Wizard, after that I boot into USB device ( I've bootable Windows 7 USB and already disable secure boot in BIOS). The process went fine until it ask me where to install the windows, so I choose the partition 50 Gig I created before but I get this message "Windows cannot be installed to this disk of the GPT partition style". Help me guys how to solve this problem, I've searched solution for this but non of them seems working for me. Step by step will be good for me.  I hope to get quick reply for this because I've this problem since 2 days ago and never get solution .
    Thank you.
    Solved!

    Hi @CharlyAR
    I tried your solution before I posted the message here but it didn't work but then I give it try again and I manage to install the Windows 7 ultimate. Now my pc dual boot with windows 7 and windows 8 (windows 8 is the main OS).
    p.s. This is important guys, if u want to make windows 7 bootable USB by following the tutorial on youtube it wont work if you pc/laptops is pure GPT (UEFI) because most of them  using MBR to make the tutorial thats why it look easy and works for them, it's almost same but there's "add-on" with GPT mode. You have to make the windows 7 bootable USB in GPT (UEFI) mode or it wont let you install. I couldn't find tutorial for this GPT mode on youtube.
    All I do is search my old DVD-RW and erase it and  I follow the tutorial here, same what @CharlyAR told me

  • How Do I Share a Photosmart Plus B209a Between Windows 7 and Windows 8 Computers?

    I have a Photosmart Plus B209a I have been using with a pair of Windows 7 laptops. I use the HP Solution Center (blue icon) to interface with it.
    I recently bought an HP Windows 8.1 laptop. The Solution Center doesn't work on it. The HP printer support site says I need to uninstall the Windows 7 Solution Center (blue icon) and replace it with the Windows 8 (gray icon) version.
    Will this make my printer only work with the Windows 8.1 machine? I want to print and scan from all of my computers without having to uninstall/reinstall version 7/version 8.1 Support Centers.
    This is a joint Windows 7 / Windows 8.1 question. I can't see a way to select two operating systems.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
    You don't need to reinstall any software on the existing machine(s). You only need to install software and drivers for NEW machine(s) or any old machine after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 for THAT machine.
    Regards.

  • Windows 8.1 - Windows Couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service

    I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers. Standard users are not able to log into the computer on the first try consistently. They receive the error message: Group Policy client service failed the sign-in access is
    denied. They are stuck at the logon screen.
    If an administrator logs in (local or domain), they can log in but get a black desktop with two error messages. The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. The second error message is a popup
    balloon. It states "Failed to Connect to a Windows service. Windows couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service."
    When a standard user attempts to log in, event viewer records three warnings. They are listed in order from oldest to newest
    The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a critical notification event. -Logged 9:14:44
    The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> failed a critical notification event. - Logged 9:14:44
    The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a notification event. - Logged 9:14:49
    After a reboot, users still have the issue. I noticed that the user profile services and system event notification service are not running though their startup type is automatic. They start after a minute or two.

    Hi Joseph__Moody,
    Based on your description ,I assume it is a domain environment .First of all ,I would suggest you to try to update all the machine .
    "I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers"
    Do you mean all the Windows 8.1 machine share the same symptom or just a specific one ?Did the machine work correctly before ?When did the issue start to occur ?Have you installed any third party software before ?Can we operate the machine when we login with
    an administrator account ?
    If the issue occurred with the specific machine :
    "The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable."
    Please try the following suggestions if we can operate the machine when we login with the administrator account :
    Open Windows Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile and verify if it has the Desktop folder there.If the folder doesn`t exit, we can copy from C:\users\Default\Desktop location(This folder is hidden by default).
    We also can try the following suggestions to have a troubleshoot :
    1.Run "sfc /scannow"or "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" to check the health of the system files.
    2.Perform a full scan with an antivirus software.
    3."They start after a minute or two."
    I suspect there is a third party service confilct here. Please perform a clean boot to verify whether there is a third party conflict here .
    How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
    If the issue occurred with multiple machines in the domian ,I would suggest you to check whether you have configured any logon scripts and logon group policy .We can remove the machine from the domain to have  a troubleshoot .
    If the issue occurred recently ,we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point.
    Best regards

    ****Disclaimer*****
    HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 on a consumer computer shipped with Windows 8, nor will it support the installation of Windows 7. HP may not provide Windows 7 drivers and suitable drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Also, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features designed for the computer.
    Make sure you create your HP Recovery Discs or USB Flash Recovery media before modifying or changing ANYTHING.
    You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "BIOS Secure Boot cofiguration" on the settings page shown below, before you can attempt to install Windows 7;
    Additionally, as the hard drive is most likely partitioned as GPT, you will have to boot the computer using the "UEFI - CD/DVD drive" or "UEFI - USB Flash drive" options in the "F9" boot menu. If "UEFI - CD/DVD drive",  "UEFI - USB Flash drive" or something to that effect doesn't exist in the boot menu, please post a screen shot and/or descibe the listed boot options.
    I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best intallation experience. If you need Windows SP1, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download and create your own Windows 7 SP1 disc. If the DVD refuses to boot as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (may require DISABLING "Fast Boot" in the BIOS) as the installation media. Please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash drive. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid UEFI enabled USB Flash drive if it is formated as NTFS and may require a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, as it has options for "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" and "FAT32".
    If you still have missing or unknown devices after installing the drivers, please post the Windows Device Manager's "Hardware Ids" (just the string of text will do) for those devices as shown in the example below;

  • Windows Vista to Windows 8?

    Hello,
    2 questions....
    Firstly... I am currently running a Windows Vista PC.
    I have purchased and went to install Microsoft Office 2013 however I was advised that I needed Windows 8 on my laptop to run this program. Therefore i purchased Windows 8 however my laptop is running Windows Vista.
    I have googled and ran a Windows Easy Transfer however now I am at a loss as what to do.
    Secondly....
    I have a update in my update centre and am unable to update due to error 80070643. I have googled and attempted to fix via the microsoft help but I have no idea what I am doing wrong and feel that both problems could be related.
    Can someone please help?
    (I am not very computer savy)
    Thanks and it is very much appreciated...

    1. Check first if your computer can run Windows 8. I am afraid that Windows 8, you have bought is not correctly licenced. Perhaps you have 8.1.
    2. Office 2013 requires Windows 7 and up, perhaps Windows 7 will be better if you have older computer (Perhaps you can downgrade yo Windows 7 from Windows 8.x)

This happens because display adapters dont have the proper drivers (amd mobility radeon hd 5000 series and intel hd graphics) where i can find proper drivers? i tried amds drivers and instalation failed. Hi @BillyDim ,
    Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP G62-a80SV Notebook PC and issues with the Graphics. I would uninstall both graphic drivers that you see listed in the device manager and restart the Notebook.
    Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system that might need updating.
    Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.

  • After updating to Windows 8.1, Windows Explorer crashes.

    Hello, I have recently updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. When it finished the install and reboot, it went to my desktop where my background image was gone, Kaspersky Pure 3.0 was gone, and Windows Explorer crashes every time it is opened. The other
    two problems are not as big of a problem right now so I searched around for a fix on this issue. I found that some applications, specifically Autodesk, were causing conflicts. I don't have Autodesk but I decided to update everything anyways. I reinstalled
    Kaspersky, fully updated it and ran a scan to see if it was a virus, which it is not. I updated AVG 2014 free, Malwarebytes free, and many others. I also ran Windows Update. I ran CCleaner to see if it would fix the problem and it didn't either. I looked at
    the error report and saw that it was caused by StackHash_35ff, which through further investigation turned out to be a fancy term for nothing. What is my problem? I really don't want to restore to an older version because I've spent the better part of the day
    allowing Windows 8.1 to bother me. Please help because I'm out of ideas and nothing from other responses seemed to be the solution.

    Okay, so the above worked. I ended the Com Surrogate task, the went into cmd and typed in these two commands;
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    Everything seems to be back in order. I hope this helps anyone who has the same problem, seeing as no one else came up with this solution.

    1.The "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" checkbox has been disabled in the IPv4 properties of the computer being joined.
    Doesnt's work.
    2.Connectivity over UDP port 137 is blocked between client and the helper DC servicing the join operation in the target domain.
    On my DC, I run netstat -an, reslut as below:
     UDP    192.168.20.3:137       *:*
    3.The TCP/IPv4 protocol has been disabled so that the client being joined or the DC in the destination domain targeted by the LDAP BIND is running TCP/IPv6 only.
    We are not using IPV6.
    This server recently updated from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Before upgrade, when Win7 and Win2008 join this domain, also have the same error message.
    Please help to check this issue.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Guo Ying,
    I have faced this critical error which makes over-writes the host names in the domain when you join.
    For example: Already you had a host name called as PC.domain.com in the domain.com Domain.
    When you try to add the another host name called as PC in the domain.com Domain, it doesn't give you the duplicate name error on the network it does over-write the existing host name called as PC.domain.com & it will add the new host name into the domain.
    Host name which got over-written will get removed from the domain. I faced this issue in my project. My DPM host name got removed from the Domain & new host name got joined into the domain which halted my backups for one day.
    Final Resolution is as follows:
    You need to start the dns console on the DC & drop down the domain name.
    Select the _msdcs when you click on _msdcs it will show the Name Server's list on the right hand side.
    You need to add the Domain Naming Master under the _msdcs or add all the domain controllers which you had.
    After you add the Name server's try joining the PC OR Laptop to the domain which is successfully joins it.
